    Leaving job is gut wrenching

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 05:57 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Yours truly has opened his partnership firm, has a business idea and rough plan on which I am working to clarify better in next 2 weeks.

Everything including my saved money for initial funding is ready. I am now only considering leaving my job as it is not possible to work this job while doing the business. I probably also need a small vacation ryt now.

My question is that has anyone else experienced deep gut wrenching uncomfortableness at the thought of leaving the job. That sweet security of monthly money hitting the bank used to support yourself and the family. How do I deal with it?

I hope this is a valid question. I just joined here.

    Starting a Barbershop

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 02:28 AM PDT

Follow up. I just found a shop thats being sold for cheap. Its competitor 30 seconds away has 100 reviews 5 stars whereas the one im buying has only 2. The seller is an old man who doesn't seem all that competent at barbering and customer service.

The operational costs are actually quite low compared to other places ive seen: business rates £0, rent £650, + utilities. After some negotiating we met at £11,000 for the whole shop (which is a bargain tbh).

Now here's the thing, im 22 and itll be my first ever business. Im wondering if i should increase prices if i get the place. The competitor charges £15 standard haircut, £18 skin fade, + £10 beard whereas the one ill be buying charges £11 standard hair cut and £13 for skin fade, + £8 beard.

Im worried if i increase prices itll scare away the existing customers who come here for the prices (maybe?)

I was thinking increasing prices enough but keeping them lower than competitor; £13 standard, £16 skin fade, +10 beard

    Suggestions?

What are the struggles of starting a new business for a student? Should I even try?!

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 06:25 AM PDT

I'm currently a student at university, studying Electrical engineering, couple of years back I used to create business ideas, write detailed business plans for them (like 150-200 pages or so), and sell them to the highest bidder, I still have those ideas and can easily develop and create one in simply any field, but I don't want to be selling them, because I feel like I'm selling my kid( not the best example but pardon my English, it's not my first language), and I have never tried to start a business myself, I know how to do it and all as I write these down for people, but I don't know if I'll be able to deal with the struggles of it as I'm also a student (I need to keep pga about 17(out of 20)).

Any advice would be greatly helpful.

What would you do? Package lost, replace product for customer?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Long story short, a package intended for a customer was lost by the shipping carrier and attempts to recover have come up unsuccessful. I have filed a claim with insurance to partially cover the cost of the lost merchandise, however it is not clear if this will be paid out. It is a high cost product that was lost due to the carriers mishandling, so I am posing the question to ask what you would do? Would you replace the product for the customer if you didn't get the insurance payout? The insurance does not even cover my cost and we are talking many thousands of dollars.

I intend to replace the product when I get the insurance pay out and eat the cost difference I am losing (a couple thousand), but I am struggling to figure out what my responsibility is if the insurance rejects the claim.

    Weekend struggle no more

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 12:04 PM PDT

What if i told you guys i am working on an app that makes weekend plans the easiest thing possible. Making plans is simple as a 123 step process? Does it sound like something people would invest in? The one thing i always find difficult is each weekend is wasted because we can never find anything to do. You sit there for hours planning and then you cancel because you couldn't come up with anything. The app will consist of help from business not only bringing business to them but more opportunities for them to test out new things. I am here so we can discuss this and potentially a partnership

Anyone know where I can find wholesale led plant lights/grow lights?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 02:15 PM PDT

I'm building indoor growing racks for nursery or indoor gardens. I need to find wholesale LED grow lights but this has been a challenge. The only thing I can find is on Alibaba, and I would like to avoid that if possible. I live in Pennsylvania, USA and I would be open to driving 100 miles to pick up if necessary. Does anyone know where I can find something like this or know what resources I can utilize find what I'm looking for? Search engines have not been very helpful for this, as most of what I find is either unreliable and directly from China or resale / retail. Thanks

Building a Plant Watering / Selling Business

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 06:17 AM PDT

Not sure if this is necessarily the best sub, but I thought it might be helpful to put for anyone interested in this field

Background, I am 31, have around 8 years experience in corporate finance and analytics. I started my career in accounting with the big 4, and did a lot of different functions for different corporations in finance / CE / analytics roles. Alas, When COVID popped off last April I was laid off from my corporate role and I never really loved working for a corporation so I thought it would be a good time to make a pivot.

Since COVID was emptying offices faster than my bowels after an Indian buffet I thought why not target the plants that remain behind. This started as part hobby (I love gardening), and part how can I make money off of this hobby while I was meandering around doing no much with my severance package?

To start I targeted my old office actually, by directly messaging the office manager. They knew me as someone with a green thumb, someone who could be relied upon, and they agreed that they needed to find some solution for the existing plants within the office after COVID popped off. After some negotiating back and forth we set up a proper invoice for me to maintain 30 existing plants. I was spitballing the number originally, but as you can imagine it was based on my own personal assessment of "how much care do these plants require"? I've seen the offices a million times, I had a pretty decent idea.

Once I had a single client I started calling upon lots of different offices in the area that were presented with this same problem. I also partnered with a landscaper (my cousin who mows lawns), as a secondary person to help me fan out and hit different office complexs. Once we had a picture of some of our original offices, there is not as much difficulty attempting to sell "interior design consultation" as well, although that is a rare sell. About 50% of our accounts at this point have come from referrals (either from existing watering clients, or my cousins lawncare clients), 50% from me cold calling. My cold calling method went from befriending a lot of office managers and maintenance managers in my area asking them about their plans for their plants during covid, since I have a pretty active and professional looking linkedin.

One gem of the pandemic that will not last is I offered a rock bottom fee of $80 for "disposal" of plants, for people that I called offering the service too and they didn't want it, but they needed to get rid of their plants due to no new clients. I don't make any money on the disposal really, what I make money on is the steady supply of plants that most of the time haven't died. I have a greenhouse in my backyard that I pack up with a steady supply of plants from disposals and I can flip them, more often than not selling through craigslist and FB marketplace (selling plants is equally as lucrative, some months it's as high as 40% of our business because we make a lot of effort towards this goal. Some peoples experience varies with facebook marketplace and CL, but I basically list my greenhouse and current stock and say "roll on up between these hours", because I don't want to juggle different messages.

The business has so far been a really big success in the first year, we have made enough to generate revenue around 160,000, and pay ourselves around 38,000 (each) which seems extraordinarily high from my perspective. Additionally there is some money saved for taxes, some money saved for expenses, and money saved for reinvestment into the business.

Our goal for next year is to hire 2 employees, both for existing routes and therefore I will have time to occupy the greenhouse more often, and build up a third route. By the end of 2022 we would like to have our business containing 4 routes (3 fulltime, 1 parttime), and a rapid expansion of revenue (shooting for 160,000 to 400,000). This goal I feel is entirely reachable if plant trends stay the same, if indoor plant trends decline it will be a bit of a struggle. One passion project of mine and my brothers currently for 2022 is to build out my shop in my home (my garage), and get it up to spec to build customizable wooden fixtures / cabinets. My brother is a cabinet maker by trade, and is toying with the idea of building customizable cabinets for us so we can penetrate more of the "design consultation / implementation" trade in these offices, rather than just upkeep services. If we can penetrate more of the design space we can really set a lot better prices that fit our drive for profitability a lot better.

Biggest challenges for 2022: * I am worried if indoor plant trends continue * I am worried if office space declines and watering services decline * I am worried that I am eating too much into my personal stock of indoor plants and my propagation rate will need keep up with demand since propagation + growth cycle takes up much more time and in order to fully keep up with demand would probably require that I expand my greenhouse into something bigger * I am worried about who I am going to find for my employees (right now I am approaching it with a strategy of attempting to find two people for $25 an hour that I absolutely trust, quality over quantity).

So yea thats the gist of it, happy to answer any questions for anyone curious in this fie

    Automatic Payments

So I run some online games and have for a long time, I currently use paypal to take payments as once the payment is completed they send a callback to my server that adds the virtual currency to the player. I am seeing more and more people lately get their paypal accounts locked so I would really like an alternative to paypal that accepts payments and sends server callbacks, does anyone know the best options available these days?

Hey guys I've been using some POD services for a bit and I've had a lot of customers. I think the price of my product is hampering sales a bit sometimes, but I can't find any POD services that don't offer posters for less than £14.

I see posters going for £9.95 on other sites and I'm wondering how they manage to get that low? Any help would be madly appreciated.

Struggling to find clients who need a website

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 06:52 AM PDT

I have recently begun working as a web developer, recently I got a gig from a friend to be a personal assistant to a real estate agent. One of the things I did was create a website for them, and word went around and some other real estate agents wanted me to create a website for them as well which I did. But now that I realized I really enjoy it I want to do it full time but I am finding it really hard to find clients outside of my small bubble.

I have reached out to 10+ local businesses whose websites are lacking, to say the least, but never heard anything back. I also started using Upwork and have sent out 12 proposals to clients looking for a web developer but didn't receive the job for any of them.

I feel in a catch-22 I want to buy more plugins like elementor Pro and Ithemes that I know would make my personal website look a lot nicer, but I don't want to buy them if I am not getting clients.

What should I do, I have been in this grey zone for about a month and a half and am still very motivated to do this full time but am at my wit's end with ideas.

Looking for feedback on a tool that prioritizes feature ideas by surveying customers and prospects

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 10:10 AM PDT

    Hi r/Entrepreneur

I've been making software products for several years. Over the years I've seen the same failures repeated in planning and building products, across different sized companies — my teams spent a long time debating over pain points and feature ideas, without enough customer validation, which often led to disappointing outcomes. After speaking to several friends in the industry I realized they were having the same issues.

In response to this, I'm working on a way to gather feature ideas, then survey users, customers and prospects using best-practise prioritization questions.

I've put together a landing page. I'd appreciate feedback, thoughts, or your current solutions to these problems that you'd like to share.

    How to get media kits?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 02:14 PM PDT

As a small business owner and marketer, I'm wondering if there's a better way to get media kits for sites. Like right now, I'll google "dog blogs", find a bunch, try to get each media kit, and then reach out if it makes sense.

Is there a better way to search through lots of media kits at the same time?

Anyone have any experience with growing a Patreon?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 09:05 AM PDT

I have a youtube channel with around 7500+ Subs Tiktok with 43K followers and just made a patreon that in two weeks got 86 subscribers

does anyone have an idea of how to grow a Patreon organically or possibly even through ads?

I would like to test a facebook ad to see what ROI is but tbh idk if it would even be worth it

I design and code custom indicators for the website Trading View, and generally my golden indicator has a really good ROI

but would this be the portion that i would market on an ad?

does someone here have any experience growing their patreon or would this be something that i just let grow organically over time?

    thank you all

I am so stuck. I don’t know what to do.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 12:35 PM PDT

I'm struggling a lot guys but I do not want to vomit my entire problems onto you because that isn't fair; you're not paid to be my therapist so I will keep this short and concise.

I don't know how to launch my business or even start it. I thought I knew, but no, I don't have a fucking clue.

My idea is to create a booking app. I will build it using ReactJS and Google Firebase. However, I don't know whether to build the bookings app first or to create the landing page and validate the idea first.

I am aware that I need to design the MVP, and so, I start by coding only the basics using ReactJS and Firebase, but I end up questioning if I am making the right decision and then I pause and switch to designing the landing page; but then I question if I am doing the right thing building it from scratch rather than using Wordpress or some website-builder.

I have already spoken to my target customers about the idea and they said it sounds good. I have already calculated my revenue and looked at implementing Stripe as my payment processor. I have found my niche target audience and I also know of which competitors that I will have to account for.

I am so stuck on this. I am losing sleep and it's ruining my health. I am 19 and I am in the UK and due to go university in the next couple of weeks for context. I am looking at paying for a mentor but I do not know if I should hire a business consultant off Fiverr or a business IT consultant. I just have no idea.

But I won't give up, I cannot give up. If I do not make this into a real idea, I will genuinely end my life, I have prepared for it. I have nothing going for me other than this idea that I have. I don't want to hear "no, don't kill yourself" because I've fully accepted this and planned for it.

All I need is an action plan and answers to the questions above or somebody to tell me what I'm doing wrong or somebody to slap some reality into me, I am sorry for sound if that sounds commanding and rude.

If I’m making a candy, can I incorporate pop rocks into it?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 12:05 PM PDT

I have a potential product but it would involve pop rocks or pop rock like "technology" (lol) in the product. Would I be able to use pop rocks brand candy and put it in? Or do I need to find a food scientist to create the compound in house. I ask because he's buying bulk pop rocks would be expensive compared to sourcing ourselves but I have very little knowledge in the procurement of food compounds like that.
