Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

401k focused and 72 (t) SEPP, the best choice for FIRE?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 11:20 AM PDT

    From this article: https://www.madfientist.com/how-to-access-retirement-funds-early/

So, for those who don't know, if your try to take money out of your 401k before the age of 59 1/2 you will get hit with a 10% fee. Because of this, a lot of people tend to focus on paying into their roth ira or other taxable accounts to avoid the fee due to early retirement. According to the article mentioned, the optimal solution would to focus on maximizing on the 401K first before investing in other accounts because the 72 (t) SEPP allows for higher gains over time. You can do the rollover too, but without worrying about the 5 year stipulation.

Is this right? Any flaws with the authors reasoning? Could there be other scenarios where this wouldn't work?

Two Jobs Retirement Comparison Calculator (Pension Specific)

    Posted: 14 Sep 2021 02:24 PM PDT

I made a retirement calculator that allows me to compare two separate jobs, and thought I'd share. It began as a project to see what it would take to replace a pension (federal worker here) and speed up my retirement.

Retirement Comparison Calculator (You won't be able to edit, just save a copy)

Sheets 1 and 2 work together to create a retirement involving a pension, sheet 3 will allow you to see what it will take to make up the difference. In the case that you don't have a pension, this calculator will still work to simply compare two jobs, just edit it a bit to not worry about whatever total is coming out of the pension sheet (sheet1).

Credit to my base calculator: I edited the calculator found here
