Newbie Investor 40k check - invest?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 03:12 PM PDT

Hey y'all! My husband is about to receive a decent insurance check and I want to make it last as long as possible. Combined we make way under 100k/yr. We shouldn't need to touch for the foreseeable future. We are both in our late 20s. He's on medical retirement in the states, I have a full time job, and hopefully this money can make up for the loss wages we would see throughout our life with his medical retirement. Is it stupid to invest the 30-40k in something like QQQ? If so, where should I put it? I could put it in a HYS account, but obviously there are stocks that are much more attractive than the savings interest percentage.

    ASO Analysis from Reddit

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 04:59 PM PDT

I scraped data from Reddit every day for the past week to understand which one might have the potential to be THE NEXT one. What surprised me from the data I have is ASO. There were increasing discussions on it for the past week.

I collect all the posts and analysis from Reddit day by day:

    On Monday:

Earning release, and it's "$1.09 vs the expected $0.56"

It pretty much doubles its expected earnings.

And remember -- it is one of the most shorted stock, and we are going to see a very interesting move today probably.

    $ASO DD Criminally Undervalued

$ASO is about to blow like $RKT did

The ONLY DD You Need on ACADEMY SPORTS + OUTDOORS $ASO - The 4th Most Shorted Stock With 91% institutional Ownership 🚀

    On Wednesday:

As I mentioned 2 days ago, ASO got a lot of attention when it beat its earnings. People are excited today because they expect there might be a squeeze for this heavily shorted stock.

Academy Sports quick update - $ASO

ASO - Set to Short Squeeze 🚀🚀🚀

Watch out for possible moves before April 16h.

    On Friday:

Guess what? People are getting more interested in discussing ASO because it beats the earning, has tons of cash, and is heavily shorted. People on Reddit believe there could be a great upside because "Short interest is at 39%, public float is 31M and market cap is 2B, 9.1 days to cover". There could be a major break before Friday next week. And here is a potential for a gamma squeeze. People approve of this, and they are in.

    TLDR: Watch out for ASO.

Why are so many younger people investing?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:02 PM PDT

For myself being 23 and of course looking a house purchase over the next 2 to 3 years (as is a fairly standard goal), I am told not to invest money that you'll need in the near future, because if a market downturn happens you could very well delay your house downpayment a few years.

Is there a real reason that so many younger people with this huge purchase looming are investing/risking so much?

I found myself coming to the realization during this downturn that it is quite important for those of us that are younger or in a house buying situation to only invest a smaller amount that wouldn't be devastating to lose, so I ended up trimming down a large percentage of my portfolio to sit on the sidelines. I.E I had up to 50% of my cash worth in my investing account, and trimmed that to about 25%

I understand that "Not all young people need to buy a house" but what is your goal otherwise

When Are Taxes Due? Everything You Need to Know About the New IRS Filing Deadline

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:28 PM PDT

Tax filing and payment deadline for individuals has been pushed to May 17 from April 15 for 2020 tax returns.

Do I have an extra month to pay my taxes?

Yes. The May 17 deadline is for both payments and filing returns.

Who does the delay apply to?

The delay applies to individuals filing Forms 1040 and 1040-SR. It doesn't affect deadlines for corporate, partnership or nonprofit tax returns.

What about first-quarter estimated tax payments?

The postponement doesn't apply to first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021. The deadline for them remains April 15. On March 29, the IRS reaffirmed the April 15 deadline.

Do I need to take any action for the delay to apply to me?

No. The extension is automatic for individual taxpayers. The agency says there is no need to call the IRS or file a form to qualify for this extension.

Does the May 17 deadline apply to contributions for 2020 traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs and HSAs?

Yes, it does. This issue had been unclear, but on March 29 the IRS issued Notice 2021-21, which postpones to May 17 the April 15 deadline for 2020 contributions to these accounts.

    What about state tax deadlines?

"We expect most states to conform their deadlines with the new federal deadlines," says Mary Peterson, executive director of the Federation of Tax Administrators, a state-tax group.

    Long term gains Sale

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:56 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm trying to sell my Delta shares in order to fund my new investment, Delta was a huge win for me, buying in last year however now I have a different stock in mind that I think will perform better than Delta from current position, not that anyone asked but it's Icahn Enterprises, however I want to make sure that every stock I sell will fall under long term gains for me.

So I have been buying Delta since March 2020, By April 4th, 2020, I've had 25 shares, so it has been a year since I have held them. I kept on buying until September 2020, 450 shares total, except for one occasion where I sold 40 shares on May 18th.

So to keep long story short, if I were to sell let's say 25 Delta shares tomorrow, will they be taxed as long term gains for me since by this point last year I already had 25 shares, or would the fact that I sold 40 shares in May 2020 would have already sold those oldest owned shares I've had, and I'd have to wait for the next date when I've had more that 40 shares last year?

I am using Robinhood by the way if this differs between brokers.

This was in back of my mind for a while now, since I knew soon would be a year since many of my purchases occurred, so would be grateful for the insight.

    Thank You!

    LEAPS

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 02:34 PM PDT

Hi All, looking for some advice on buy LEAP Calls. Ive read a bit and I am currently trying out some paper trading. There was only one strategy that I have found thats simple and seems to be effective.
    1. Buy high delta (0.8 or more) 2. Buy far in the money. If you think the stock will go up long term you profit, if not the most you can loose is the premium. Ive looked at the options charts so I know what the P and L looks like for this. I checked earnings dates to try to avoid IV crush near earnings and expiration. Is there anything else I should be considering? Or other strategies to think about. Looking for something simple at the moment as I learn more about this.

How to pick stocks for swing trading?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:52 AM PDT

I am wanting to swing trade, possibly day trade once I've done more research. I dabbled with Robinhood last year and made $200ish (mostly on Moderna). I've watched several swing trade strategy videos and done some reading, and am slowly figuring out a strategy for myself. I have a decent understanding of technical analysis, but I need help actually picking stocks to analyze. So far I am using a screener (on tradingview) and am looking at low P/E ratios, dividends, debt and low/highs (1 month and 1 year). I then pick out stocks that have a pretty big gap between their lowest and highest prices, and examine their chart and do some google searches to see if there is any relevant news.

Is this a good start to a strategy, or am I completely off? I know there is a lot more to learn, and I will be practicing with paper trading for a while until I feel comfortable to invest real money.

IBKR, DeGiro, Saxo Bank or other for next broker

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 10:50 AM PDT

    Hey StockMarket members!

I'm currently living in the Netherlands and soon my account will be switched to Saxo bank, they have quite a high service (custody) fee of 0,12%-0,25% of your holdings per year and minimum of 15 dollars per US trade when you don't have an active profile (6 dollar with active)

Interactive Brokers is available to me in my country and was wondering if it's a good broker. Safety and security of the funds is important to me. Would you guys recommend IBKR or Saxo Bank? I invest in US and sometimes European stocks.

Do you think Interactive Brokers is a quality and safe Broker? Saxo bank is regulated by the Danish government, IBKR has their European license via the Irish government.

Also there is De Giro and some other brokers available.

Hope to hear from you and happy Easter!

Strong DD on Fisker , what do you think ??

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 02:47 PM PDT

New to trading and I need help!

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 02:32 PM PDT

I never thought about buying stocks until very recently. Swept up by the hype of friends posting on social media. I watched the stocks they were talking about for several days and one of them started gaining like crazy all of a sudden. I downloaded a trading app and bought a meager $150 worth of that stock. SNDL (a cannabis company if anyone doesn't know of it). I bought it at $3.95..lol.

It crashed right back down to about 2/3 of that the next day and to about half of that the day after (something like that). Since then I've been trying to buy shares at the lowest price I can to bring down my average cost. My current position is 550 shares at ave. $1.29

I recently read a post by someone in a similar position. He recommended selling calls at $1.50 to make some money back. I have several questions. Would it be better to try to sell at a higher price? ($1.75 for example)? Would this be a wise move at all selling calls?

Thank you anyone who could help this complete newbie recover a few dollars back. 🙏🏼
