18 now, would like to start a small business by 20. What steps should I take to accomplish this?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:57 PM PDT

Title says main question, here are the details: I'm 18 and about to go into county college in NJ, and I did have to take out student loans, although at the time of typing the semester was only around 2.2k. in loans. I work 2 part time jobs and will be working them 4 days a week during the semester, and I currently make between $10-$12 an hour, being scheduled ~40 hours a week, though this may dip some amount during the semester. I only have about 2k to my name as it stands. My question is: what should I be doing (as in saving / investing or finding another / other jobs if this is the best option) to have a good chunk of capital to open a small cafe in north jersey by age 20? I'd like to get the most advice I can now while I'm still not locked into anything that would prevent me from investing where I should or doing anything else that would need prior planning. Thanks in advance.

    Touchless carwash ?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:43 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a good full time job, but was thinking of starting (or buying) a small drive thru conveyer carwash. I live in California and it's expensive here.

Is it better to start one up from scratch or buy one?

Does anybody here have experience with this?

    Is it profitable?

    Thx

Bike / tent rentals space. Dead fall / spring season

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 02:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am currently running a tiny bike / tent rentals business. Have about 15 bikes and 20 tents (+ some other stuff).

As this business is extremely seasonal I can't rent the room year round. So every year I have to find another place and confuse the customers with all the "ah sorry we moved to a different place this year".

So I want to find a place that I can rent year round, add some winter stuff like tubings, ski, snowboards etc. - what else would people need?

The problem is however the inability to find a good room. I used to rent rooms in basements, cheap malls etc. but it really annoys me that people have to either climb with heavy bikes up top or I have to help them. This is not the way it should be.

So what I desire is a first floor room with wide doors, located on the "red line" in a dense neighborhood.

And there are so few of them! And if there's anything - it's either taken by someone or extremely expensive. So expensive that it can exceed my monthly income. And if it rains often (like it did in July) my income goes waaaay down.

So here's the question: how much you (imagining you're a customer) care about the room in which the rentals is? 99% of my customers are locals.

Would you mind getting your bike up from or down to the basement? How important is the look of it? Should it be right up front or you don't mind back doors?

And please give me a few ideas of what can be done to have at least some income in the fall and spring when people don't really want to go anywhere (=no rentals). Maybe there's something people need in these seasons? And what do actually bike shops and other seasonal businesses so off season?

    Thanks.

How to get financing to buy additional ownership shares

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:07 PM PDT

I'm currently a minority partner in a small business, we have an estimated valuation of $1 million. This is the valuation we have agreed on as a group and with that understanding one of my majority partners would like to sell off portions of his ownership shares. I would like to purchase 10 shares valued at $100,000.

How do I find financing for this? Cash is not an option and I don't have a large amount of equity on my home to draw from as we purchased our home at the start of this year. My partner is also not interested in carrying the loan.

    • Can I get an SBA Loan for myself, even though my partners will not be interested in co-signing and do not want to be "attached" to the loan?

    • Do banks traditionally do large sum loans like that?

I'm rather young (26) and don't have much experience with this sort of thing, I'm hoping to gather as much information here and online before I go to the banks in person. I don't really have any options/know someone for "angel investors", although I'll probably ask my financial adviser for tips too.

I've already done a few bank personal balance sheets and am mostly debt free, I have a small car payment and mortgage. My current "net worth" is about $130,000 and my credit score is high 740+. My main issue is simply cash on hand. I have about $10k in emergency funds and $20k in retirement investments I've been building for the past few years. I'd like to avoid cashing out my retirement funds but will probably discuss that with my adviser just in case. Either way I'm pretty sure I could come up with a down payment of around 20% but its the actual process of securing the financing that's super intimidating. Where do I start?

    Realized Losses from Downtime?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:13 PM PDT

Hello r/smallbusiness, I have an odd question about downtime as it applies to a small seed-stage venture fund I work with.

As with most funds of its type, it doesn't "actively" earn revenue unless an investment is made or one of its portfolio companies gets bought out or makes its IPO, which is not an everyday occurrence.

Its employees are all overtime-exempt salaried professionals. Sometimes they have more time than work, and other times they have more work than time and stay late at the office as necessary. Effectively, everything that needs to get accomplished is accomplished without payroll fluctuations.

Now, let's suppose that this venture fund incurs 10 hours of downtime in a month (for whatever reason). Since the fund isn't actively generating revenue, and increased hourage for its employees comes at no additional cost to the business... is there actually any cost associated with the downtime, besides the cost of third party remediation when necessary? Is there some sort of less tangible value-add that could be happening but isn't?

I really can't figure out if there's something I'm missing here, or if there's simply no cost for downtime that doesn't directly cut into revenue generation. Any thoughts or opinions on the subject would be much appreciated! Thanks very much in advance!

    Should I license my business?

How would I go about conducting market research?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:25 PM PDT

Hello all, just found out about this sub and I'm assuming this is the right place to ask this question.

I plan on starting a pet sitting/dog walking business but I'm a little confused when it comes to "market research". What I have done so far is a lot of googling for local pet sitting businesses (there's quite a few of them in my area that are large as hell which is a tad bit discouraging to be honest).

I'm almost certain there's more I should be doing but not really sure what, any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wanting to start a business - Aus

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:19 PM PDT

Hi guys, long time lurker. First time poster.

I am wanting to open a business for Graphic design/Merch and apparel print business.

This is my thoughts. 1. Find clients that need what I am providing (graphic design services, or merch)

    1. Meet with clients, go through the design process such as updating logos, creating business cards etc etc. if they need apparel I can produce the mockups, and confirm designs (prime example if they needed uniforms)

    2. Find myself few good screenprint/merch businesses that can get the stock my client needs and print.

    3. I'll provide my client with the products they need. Essentially I'll be the primary provider of the design, but the secondary or "middle man" of the merch aspect.

What do you guys think? I am not new to the GD business and have merch experience as well ( previous role)

What also do I need to set up my business besides an ABN. Do I need a business bank account? Any advice appreciate and happy to add/speak to people.

    Much appreciated

HELP Lack of qualified applicants advise please

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:33 PM PDT

    Greetings,

Over the past 6 months I have seen unprecedented growth in my business beyond what I had anticipated. We started out doing a few jobs a month for a total average revenue of 10k avg. (Fence installation and repair)

I started a new marketing and advertising effort late May which lead me to our current predicament.

As an owner and operator I am still in the field working with my sole employee and we are beyond our maximum capacity for workload since mid June. As of last month we finished out at 32k revenue, and are currently booked out solid for the next 5 weeks.

This past Friday Aug 31 2018, I had 5 more estimate requests and I signed 4 of 5 with the 5th pending a closing date. (Verbal commitment) I also have another 3 estimates scheduled for this Tuesday after the labor day weekend.

I have had ads running in my market on indeed for a crew lead, laborer, and also a subcontractor. I am in dire need of a skilled fence installer and or crew and it would seem as now its a unicorn. I cannot find one. If anyone has relevant experience in this industry or can offer insight as to how you have solved this issue I would be more than happy to further discuss this in detail. Please advise or if anyone knows a qualified fence installer/crew in the Greensboro / Triad area of NC I would be appreciative.

    Please advise

Not yet profitable LLC and taxes

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 01:40 PM PDT

Hi guys! I am meeting with a CPA soon but he's rather busy and was hoping I could get some answers/insight in the meantime!

I graduated massage therapy school in June and in preparation to start practicing, I filed an LLC and rented an office space to work out of. Unfortunately, the licensing board lost some of my paperwork so I haven't been able to practice yet and therefore haven't made any money. So my main questions are: Am I supposed to be filing anything tax-wise yet? I'm unclear on exactly when to file quarterly. Also, would I just do an owner's draw to get paid? Would I cut myself a check from the profits?

Like I said, I'll be going over this with my accountant and I swear I've done some research but there's so much out there that I'm hazy on a few of the particulars. Thanks!

How do you deal with cash-only competitors that you suspect engage in tax evasion?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:06 PM PDT

These competitors offer similar services at a much cheaper price, but only take cash and do not provide any invoices or any official documentation.

Because of this, there is a reason to believe they could be pocketing the money and not paying taxes. There is no way to know for sure of course, so what's one to do to make sure the competition is legal and fair?

Looking for honest and critical feedback on my website

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:23 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm looking for honest and critical feedback on my website that I'm opening for a limited beta release and start spending on advertising. Before this, looking for feedback on design and copy to see if messaging is clear, and what I can explain and improve on.

It's an analytics platform for small to medium businesses that does all the analysis for them using their data, and the results are insights and recommendations. I short, an automated 24/7 analyst for businesses to give you unbiased advice on what your marketing team or agency is doing for you.

Paying myself as a LLC with S-Election (W-2 vs 1099)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:50 AM PDT

Happy long weekend folks -- Question for the community since I'm getting conflicting answers from my CPA:

I'm currently employed full time with company A on a W-2. I landed a new job with company B who will be paying me as a contractor/1099. Thus, I'll obviously have to front the full bill for medical insurance and any retirement accounts, etc.

So from my research here, I set up a LLC with S-Election and most people are posting that they set up a 1 person payroll. I ran the payroll setup by my CPA and he says that is unnecessary because I can issue myself a 1099 at the end of the year from the LLC. I asked again about the payroll and he says it's an unneeded expense and to just issue a 1099 to myself for a reasonable compensation.

I really want to believe him but my gut is telling me to get a second opinion. Is he right that I can go down the path of a second 1099 to myself and it will almost the same, tax liability/expense wise, as setting up a payroll on Gusto and incurring the costs?

Are there cons/pros to either approach? TIA!

Any program developers that can help me?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:15 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the best place to ask. I run a screen printing company and currently use a few excel spreadsheets with macros for quoting and organizing customer info.

I was curious to see if it's possible to create a program for Mac/windows that does the same thing so I can let other employees use it and it's easier for them to use. Thanks!

Reinvest in my business or move out of the house

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:43 PM PDT

    Little background here:

I'm 23. My business is finally doing good revenue, and i net profit(before taxes) ~$5/month. I've lived with my mom in a suburb right outside nyc all my life, and I've always wanted to move out.

Figure i can pay myself $3k/month and split a 2 bedroom in NYC and pay $1.8k in rent, using the rest on daily expenses. This would improve quality of life and save me 2 hrs a day on commute

I could also keep living at home, and reinvest into the business (i was thinking marketing. Im in digital marketing so i would know how to manage the $ properly)

    What do you guys think?

Advice from those who have seem success.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:43 PM PDT

I "work" alongside a friend who has had more success than she expected to from a small business start up they started almost 6 years ago. It's in the art industry and she ended up seeing a large profit margin before the end of year 3 as well as social media success that I don't believe they had banked on. As a matter of fact I am pretty sure social media is a huge part of their success. Now this person is in their mid 50's and I am in my early 30's. This is one of my good friends and while i will always be there help and listen and guide them (personally and professionally) I refuse to actually become a part of the buisiness.

I do help out when I can like on business trips or watching over things while they are away or friendly "consulting" when they need ideas, help pushing through a dry spell etc, but I would never take compensation for any of these things we do together nor expect recognition or tell people im a part of their business. Here are the reasons, I do not do the things this person does. This is not my area of expertise. They work in the art industry and I am a scientist. This is not something I can contribute much to except for being there for a very important person in my life. I also don't believe in mixing business with "family". I have already seen it go awry with my friend and won't let that type of thing happen between us over something like "work". Now, here is where I need some advice.

As she has seen a quick rush of success, she has had a sudden boom of negativity from a few people come her way. Think negative feedback on google, lashing out on social media by people who can't seem to distinguish business from personal dealings. Others who "copy" original ideas from my friends company that can't be copyrighted or they may "tweak" just enough to copy etc etc etc and my friend takes these things very personally. It puts her in a slump and makes it hard for her to do her work for a few days. She has become upset a couple times that she has encountered people who have turned on her (especially in social media) or have complained about her company to her. She takes these instances as personal attacks and they truly seem to hurt her feelings. Every day that I browse over her website or just watch some of live feeds or help pack orders because I want to visit with her it's very obvious that she is only going grow. I've done a couple of trips with her to correlate with her company because my schedule allows it and it's only obvious that she is going to continue to rise.

Now most of us understand that this is just an issue that she is going to have to deal with as she expands but I don't think she really believes it's going to get worse as she gets bigger. Also She is one of the strongest women I have ever known so i was really shocked the first time I saw her upset that someone had "turned" on her. When in reality, I am sure it's just a part of success. I am curious to know how many of you dealt with situations like this and what type of advice or strategies helped you. Do you have any recommendations to help keep her grounded and focused on what shes doing and not what everyone else is doing?

Anything anyone would like to throw my way would be great! TIA!

Setting up s-Corp benefits (heath care, 401k etc)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:13 PM PDT

I've been an s Corp for 2.5 years and I had a bad accountant- I never saw the benefit to being an s Corp. My previous view was I would make all this money and issue myself the same crappy salary.

My new accountant just informed me I can set up "employee benefits" and the company would then cover my health insurance, 401k, etc.

How do I go about setting this stuff up? Are there any other benefits I didn't know about?

Backstory, I'm 26, super major debt due to life, work in car sales, and now I've started my own business. (www.lovetoysus.com) I've become a sex toy & lingerie retailer. Besides the obvious not fully developed website, is there any sort of advice or information someone call shoot my way. I've been a seller through different platforms for the past 6 years from amazon to ebay and all the apps. So shipping and logistics is pretty easy for me at this point but actual business development in terms of marketing strategies and sales. Any advice?

    1. Hi, Nice and best post I have seen so far. As an experience Email Marketer from one of the best lead generation services, I believe fresh content works always well. Because in this busy world people used to read the new things or new content. Writing a content in such a way (increasing the excitement of people to go through the entire article) may help in increasing the chance of a lead generation.
