    Care to share?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:23 AM PDT

A 6 figure earner claims he doesn't know what to do with his boatload of money anymore, made me curious what it's like to exceed your "income goal".

Apparently, someone who earns more than his dream income now said life becomes boring once you hit your desired salary.

Another one said "it's lonely at the top" referring to being a highly-paid coach.

Makes me wonder, wealthy Redditors, is it true?

How can I increase revenue for my spreadsheet services business?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:07 PM PDT

I currently offer spreadsheet services(repairs, make templates, dashboards, calculators, etc) to individuals and small businesses through a freelancing website.

I've been doing it for a year now and make between $1,500 and $2,000 per month. I started taking small jobs, anything and everything and got a lot of crappy quality customers that were hard to please. About 6 months ago, I realized if I take bigger customers with larger budgets, I increase revenue and end up serving higher quality customers that often become repeat buyers. This has helped increase my revenue and free up more time. I am now looking to take it to another level.

Just last week, I started offering a maintenance subscription service to keep charging these customers on a monthly basis for a monthly subscription fee of $40/month. I was having to do repairs and tweaks occasionally anyways and figured I might as well get paid for it. I booked 3 subscriptions last week.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep climbing with my revenue? I've been consistent over the past year which has been a good sign but I want to kick it up a notch.

Outsourcing is not an option since it will be hard to maintain my quality and good reputation. Also, the freelance company I go through takes a 20% cut already so if I outsource, I would need to take a 10-20% cut for myself. I would think the quality would drastically lessen if I'm expecting a quality product from a developer for half the price of what the customer pays.

Does anyone have any advice for further growth?

    Thank you in advance!

How do you view successful people who come from money?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:42 AM PDT

I often see someone who young and successful having their success undermined because they come from wealth. I agree that it is way more impressive when you gain wealth without that support. The difficulty of doing so is much higher.

So how do you view people and partners in business when you know that they come from money?

Does coming from money undermine the success?

Concept for a news site about honest reporting

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Help me organize these ideas. Having a disagreement with cofunders on how to frame this.

We are building a news aggregator that focuses on using AI and editorial review to validate honest and accurate reporting. The project will also publish special reporting on occasion.

So, what matters most to consumers?:

    - A tech-like brand name that shows upfront that we are using AI to validate the news

    - A classic brand name that sounds like a reputable news source worthy of trust

    - Maybe something else?

What's your opinion on how best to brand this project for large user adoption.

Business ideas decision fatigue. Shall I get a coach?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Had my first Shopify fashion business 5 years ago. Made a little money, learnt a ton. Then went back to full time work in business development, sales basically. Couldn't stop thinking about creating another business.

My problem is having many ideas. For the last 2 years I've been constantly thinking about what idea to go ahead with. Tested a few for 1 month max... pathetic yes.

Unsure if I need a cofounder or a business coach. To help me decide on direction and what business to pursue. I feel like I have all the right knowledge, yet somehow paralysed unsure what to do. Have good savings and that keeps me comfortable.

Wondering if anyone hired a business coach that was really helpful in terms of initial decision making? How did you decide what to focus on?

    Console Launch on Product Hunt

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:54 AM PDT

Hey everyone! 👋 Today is the day! I just launched Console, a free weekly newsletter about open-source software on Product Hunt!

Each week we cover a new open-source project and the developer behind it. The developers always have interesting insights about technology trends, how they learned to code, how others can learn to code, and the resources they use to stay up to date on software.

To give you a little taste, here are some of the projects we've covered so far:

FastAPI -> this week we had Sebastian on to discuss how he went from Colombia to Dubai, and eventually Germany all from learning to code and how he now works on his own open-source project FastAPI full-time.

TabFS -> and how Omar was inspired by Plan9 to create a browser extension that mounts your browser tabs as a filesystem.

Project Lightspeed -> and how Garrett got an interview at Amazon and landed a job at Mux off of the traction that Project Lightspeed received.

GUN -> and how Mark is trying to build a more egalitarian future through his decentralized technology.

I'd greatly appreciate it if you could support me today on Product Hunt with your upvote and comments!

    https://www.producthunt.com/posts/console-2

I have some FANTASTIC INTERVIEWS lined up for the month of June and can't wait to have you all onboard.

    Using Memes in Marketing

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:50 PM PDT

I have been thinking about mixing my marketing efforts with memes to make the advertisements more entertaining and ride to coat tails of already popular media. I made the video below and was expecting more likes, but people don't seem to be responding to it. Reddit is usually good at letting me know what I am doing wrong, so figured I would post and see what people thought.

    The cost of entrepreneurship

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I'm wondering what does it cost to become entrepreneurship . Or the costs of success?

The reason I ask is because I came from a multi generational lower class family and changed from being homeless to becoming successful.

I needed to make some major changes in my life to be able to save up money which led to building an investment portfolio and real estate.

The amount of effort and time it took me to bust my ass and to aggressively save and resist the urge to frivolously spend money for a long time.

I find myself working seven days a week nonstop. I run my own business so I suppose this is also as much to do with success as it is entrepreneurship.

I am wondering what other peoples experiences are coming from a generationally poor family?

How important is it to an investor that you are already incorporated?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:56 AM PDT

These days I'm discussing with some colleagues whether we should incorporate before pitching to some investors for a project we are designing (we did not implement anything yet, see later for details).

My current belief is that it will only burn us money, I say "burn" because the money will not be used for the execution of the project, but rather for the bureaucratic procedures that come with the incorporation (layer, notary, etc.). I think what an investor is interested in is the team, the idea, and the feasibility of execution because anyway we'll have to incorporate before he/she could lend us the investment.

One of my colleagues instead has a different opinion, saying this would give us more credibility and higher our chances of getting the investment.

Side note: we don't have an MVP or anything. Just an idea and an execution plan. This is because the idea (tech + physical venue) to work would require thousands of $$ of investment, and a homemade MVP is not a viable option. That's why if we incorporate but don't get the investment we can do nothing and will have to burn more money to close a never-opened activity.

Based on your experience, what do you think?

Branding in Canada- English vs French

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:03 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

We have an e-commerce store in Canada that have customers all around the country. We are a French Canadian company based in Quebec, where French is the main language of around 80% of the population. We are currently only online, but we are working to open a brick-and-mortar store in Quebec.

Our company name is in English and really fine for English people around the country. In Quebec, our name is less convenient. French people have trouble to pronounce it correctly, invert the name (it is a mix of 2 words in English) or just don't remember it.

We found a good name in French that is short and have the domains(.com and .ca) available.

Question: Should we work on two brands? English brand (current one) for the rest of Canada and create a French brand (new one) for Quebec market?

Restaurant/Café owners] Does this create any value to you? (Others are also welcome)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:36 AM PDT

I read in a comment in this subreddit that it's better to hear silence before launch than to lanch and hear silence.

So here's the situation. I'm currently in the process of building an online book-keeping service for restaurant and café owners with a twist of my own.

I'm currently in the validation stage where I need to find if there's an actual need for this. Basically a product-market fit.

I already have the Minimum Viable Service 1.0 ready which I believe will help the owners to save time + money and make better financial decisions for their restaurants/cafés.

    The MVS includes:

    1. Doing book-keeping.
    2. Developing Tax ready financials (Balance Sheet + Income Statement + Cash flow statements).
    3. A Revenue report which has 15 different KPIs. These things are to be delivered on a weekly basis as restaurant business is a fast moving industry.

Price range would be between $400-500/month. I know that restaurant owners outsource their accounting needs for around $700-1100/ month already. Since we're not dealing with tax filing, payroll and inventory, I feel like this is a fair pricing)

I'm looking for answers of a few questions namely: 1. Would this service provide any serious value to you (as an owner) 2. Would you (as an owner) pay something in this range for a service like this.

If someone wants a detailed description about the service, they can PM me and I'd be delighted to explain. And then they can validate/invalidate my idea for me.

I'm also open to other advices from people in other sectors. Any information is welcome and appreciated.

    Cheers 🥂

If every humans was essentially a clone in terms of intelligence, work ethic, and education, what would determine who becomes successful financially/ business wise?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 12:24 PM PDT

Let's say one day we all have some sort of computer link in our brains that gives everyone (or almost everyone) access to all knowledge and skill. Say the chip allows people to just download skills. So I can just become a doctor or pilot etc without doing any work. Essentially a world where everyone is equal. Would capitalism exist at all as it does now? Would we have to adopt some sort of communism?

On a similar note what happens if all competitors work equally as hard and are equally smart and talented? Would any market be profitable or would we reach the theoretical economic concept that over the long run there is no profits? Would people constantly change careers briefly to suck any gains from them until wages and profits lowered to a point where they had to move to a new business?

Here's your chance to rant about how much this subreddit sux. Lets try to contain it to a single weekly thread - here.

We're going to start removing any individual posts - because they're becoming quite meta, but it's only fair to have a regular place for constructive criticism. To be clear, no personal attacks will be tolerated here either - but feel free to use this post as a subreddit punching bag/soap box, and tell the mods what a terrible job we're doing.

    Wanted Entrepreneur

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:36 AM PDT

Hi, I'm an entrepreneur/marketer in a situation where I have a business with proven revenue, I tried radio ads even TV, conversion rate is from 22 - 40% (high compared with industries standards) I'm a marketer and worked for a couple of startups.

For this business I lack the money needed to scale, if anyone interested for more details (I know might be a lot) email me marginalie@gmail.com, also he will manage part of operations (please be aware that work is needed, also be a trustful person and someone easy to work with)

    It's not a startup, I see it more like a in-and-out business

    We'd go 60-40 earnings

    Thanks

I gathered some of Silicon Valley's most successful founders & investors to help us launch TheHQ.ai - The Professional Network for Entrepreneurs & Technologists

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:15 AM PDT

We recently launched our signup page for TheHQ.ai - The New Age Professional Network.

In our first week, I managed to gather some phenomenal founders & investors to be part of the network's initial cohort (you can see some highlights on our signup page).

What to Focus on When Gathering Early Users

Gathering the right set of early users for your product is absolutely crucial. I see early-stage founders often focusing on the wrong thing - trying to get the largest number of signups for their MVP as quickly as possible. They focus on signup quantity when really they should be focusing on signup quality. In your early days, there's nothing more valuable than having a small set of power users who are ready to provide frequent feedback.

This is exactly what I focused on this past week while gathering our first cohort of users for TheHQ. Instead of blasting it out to all my friends and followers to optimize for signup volume, I carefully identified a small set of successful founders & investors who I knew would be power users of our product and spent 1:1 time with each of them to get them invested.

    Strategies for Gathering Early Users

I tried a number of strategies to recruit these founders & investors. Some worked and some didn't. Here are the top 3 strategies I believe worked well for us:

    1. Be Authentic - when reaching out to people, stop adding polish to things you say and using fancy words. Explain what you're doing in layman terms and establish a relationship of trust.
    2. Leverage Warm Introductions - cold reach outs can work for sure, but warm introductions from your network will always have a significantly higher success rate for gathering people that will invest time and effort.
    3. Share Your Vision - people often think that sharing your vision is only important when speaking with teammates/early employees are your company. I would say it's even more important to share your vision with your target users. For each person we talked to, I walked them through exactly what we're looking to do with The HQ, and once I did they had a much higher likelihood to be invested in that same vision with us.

What I Said About Our Vision

This is the blurb I shared when reaching out (quite similar to what's on our landing page). I think the most important thing to note about it is that it evokes emotion.

"It's been nearly 20 years since LinkedIn was founded. We thought it's time for a new professional network - designed specifically for entrepreneurs & technologists.

This time with 0 ads and 0 spam. Just magical connections between incredibly talented people.

A professional network of the future - One that introduces you to new people, helps you cultivate meaningful relationships, surfaces only the best content, and serves as a hub for learning & career acceleration. A professional network that engineers serendipity.

Completely reimagined for the new age of technology & the future of work."

    -------------------------------

I'm curious to hear - what strategies have you tested for gathering early users? What do you think about our messaging and what could we have done better?

Looking for SAT ACT prep( hear me out)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:33 AM PDT

Looking for someone who is a solo SAT/ACT prep but wants to take a advisor/ higher level position (Dir-VP) away from the grind.

Also looking for life coach for above ( Dir-VP)

Both positions have a ** bigger sweat equity** than cash pay which is the reason its flared as investors wanted since you would be investing time.

Let me know if you know of anyone who has 10+ years experience with the above.

Someone with lesser experience also welcome, looking for the right person over just X years of experience.

I need to rework my entire marketing approach

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:02 AM PDT

I'm trying to look at this as a blessing, but I really feel like I'm running out of options.

I run an online fitness coaching business, and I use social media (specifically direct DM outreach) to get all of my clients.

At the beginning of this year, my twitter account was suspended without reason. Yes, it said I "violated the guidelines" but without any further information.

This was a massive blow to my marketing because up until that point, twitter had been my main source of clients.

I was hurt, but I figured I still had a relatively large Instagram account and I would just put 100% of my focus there instead. Fast forward 5 months to yesterday evening when I get a DM from an anonymous account (no followers, no posts, following no one) that said if I "talk shit about -specific diet niche- again, ill delete your account. Watch how fast it happens".

I didn't think about it, whatever random troll. Well low and behold I wake up today to find that my account is suspended. Im prompted to submit personal information in order to verify identity and they'll get back to me in 24 hours.... Though the internet seems to conclude that this is essentially a death sentence for the account.

I feel silly that I'm crushed over losing my account, though between 7 years of personal photos and tons of great copy/data testing AND leads I've worked really hard to build rapport with.... I have no idea what to do. I feel like I've just essentially destroyed my business.

Im looking for insight into getting back up and continuing to serve my community. This is incredibly frustrating with Instagrams lack of communication and how easy it apparently is to just crush accounts without a word

    Integrity and business?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:04 AM PDT

Does anyone find it difficult to balance integrity and business? I try to live my life similar to Jeff Bezos' philosophy of an "integrated lifestyle". So in other words I don't like to compartmentalize and segment my life. I don't have a "work life" and "personal life". So it's not like I will allow myself to do all these nasty things I wouldn't find respectable outside of work in any other circumstance and try to justify it by saying "it's just business".

Anyways, I find a lot of people in general, not just in business are pretty lacking in integrity. I'm not saying I'm perfect myself, but it's a pretty common theme I'm seeing amongst people especially in business where they seem to apply the concept of separating it from their personal life and end up doing a lot of things to F you over that I'm sure they would second guess themselves outside of work.

Customers lying, cancelling pre-orders, trying to cut you out, asking for refunds way beyond the timeframe for silly reasons, returning product that's not from you, being very late on payments and always making excuses, etc. Just being very sneaky and conniving in general. Same with suppliers. Lying about product quality, trying to block you out from other suppliers, not crediting you for goods received in garbage condition, etc.

Then even on our customers' end dealing with THEIR customers... I see them lying about the product specs. Of course I know and it's obvious to anybody familiar with the industry, but the average person has no idea and it's pretty shocking to see such blatant lies. For example, everyone LOVES Japanese products right? Japan means quality (or at least that's the perception. So of course they will say "Made in Japan" as opposed to "Made in USA".

There's a lot of things I don't want to do in business. They work, but I don't want to have to do it... A lot of sales tactics, Machiavellian and phycological techniques, etc.

Maybe I'm just being too naive and this is how the world is? Is this the "red pill" and I just need to "play the game"? Seems pretty difficult to for example just "cut out all the crappy customers and suppliers". I'd be left at a serious disadvantage with hardly any big customers or suppliers.

Have you used PR to land backlinks? If so, how did you do it & what impact did it have on your business?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:13 AM PDT

I recently saw a good video on PR by Rise At Seven CEO Carrie Rose → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2FyLCw3BFE

It gave her campaigns lots of backlinks from high-authority websites & probably some uptick in their traffic. Then the traffic died down. It also resulted in a few sales but not too significant.

I'd like to ask if any entrepreneur used PR to get a boost in sales or maximize their traffic so that it helped their growth curve increase consistently?

    Would love to know:

    • how you did it?
    • how much it helped you?
    • what was the long-term impact?
    • what tools do you use to spot trends?
