My sister (40) sent my niece (15) to live with her dad's sister (aunt - late 50s) and she came back covered in bruises

    Posted: 08 May 2021 05:23 AM PDT

My sister was having trouble with my niece a few years ago doing teenager stuff, so she reached out to my niece's father's side of the family and her Aunt (late 50s) offered to take her in and make sure she finished high school.

My family lives in Michigan, while niece's aunt lives in SC (where we are all originally from but moved up to Michigan back in 2010). I have my own judgement of my sister, she's never been able to hold a job and bounced from apartment to my parents house for the last twenty years. She's been on and off drugs, so to say she wasn't fit to raise her own child is an understatement. So my sister sent her daughter to SC.

Her dad's family are hard core Christians with a strong emphasis on education and "making something of yourself" - at the time this sounded great. She was heading down a not so great path: skipping school, experimenting with drugs, nudes, etc (at 11). Of course none of this was acceptable to the dad's side of the family and their way of dealing with this was beating this child a lot over the last four years. I am shocked my sister was unaware of this as she has been in contact with my niece (I've seen her briefly a few times over the years and I wish she had told me what was going on).

She is now back in Michigan. We have pictures of the bruises. They cover her thighs front and back and they were black and purple. Apparently two of the aunts were taking turns beating her before they sent her back. I'm trying to stick to the facts here, but how hard do you have to hit someone and how many times to bruise someone like that??? I know people have opinions about this type of discipline, I would never hit my own children, but even for people that believe in "the belt" this is sickening

My question is: is there anything we can do? I am not sure if contacting CPS will help because my niece is now on the other side of the country in Michigan and this aunt lives in SC. I haven't had a chance to see her yet (I work full time, have my own children to take care of) but I plan to sit down with her and ask her what happened from her point of view. My grandma mentioned that my niece said she told people at school and nothing came of it, which I know is not legal/okay. I am a teacher and we are mandatory reporters. (But I want to confirm with my niece who she spoke to at school and exactly what she said to them first).

I hope I don't get roasted for this post, and even I do, I realize we (my family and I) deserve it. I can't believe we sent her there and it went on for four years before they sent her back. I'm sure there will be questions about why she was sent back: she was embarrassing them at school. This aunt was very active in her community, she is also a pastor, and my niece has been acting out at school. Class disruptions, sneaking off to meet with boys, etc, all the things these type of people would be extremely embarrassed and angry about. This comes directly from the aunt, she could not get ahold of my sister so she reached out to me to explain that niece needed to come back to Michigan because it was too much for her to handle anymore.

Our current plan is enroll niece in school and seek counseling services for her. Her mental health comes first, but if there is anything we can do to stop this aunt (and the others) from harming the other children that are under their care, I would like to do something. Same with the people at school. If a student ever confided in me that they were being beaten like that, I would do all I could to help, starting with my legal obligation to report to CPS.

Also this might be asked: niece's father died two years ago of an overdose.

IA: I got a property survey. Neighbor got a property survey. 28 foot difference. My survey company suggests a mistake historically that was never caught.

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:37 PM PDT

I have an ongoing dispute with a neighbor over some landscaping. My neighbor says my landscaping encroaches on his property, but according to my property survey done last fall, it does not. My neighbor meanwhile says he had one done two years ago and still has the pins available. There was a nearly 30 foot difference between the surveys.

The company I hired came back out and confirmed their original markings. Neighbor insists his company was correct. So I spoke to the company again. Now the owner came out with two guys and they looked at the documents for a while and then started measuring the entire street. They said that the plats use a special "starting point" and based on that starting point, the math for the plats on our street is not actually possible - it is short by over 50 feet. They said the neighbor's starting point is the other end of the street, and my starting point is this end of the street, and basically there is an overlap. Starting from my end I get an extra 28 feet, starting from my neighbor's end he gets an extra 28 feet.

They said that my house is the only one that was worked off that starting point - my house was the first to be built when the rest of this was farmland, and then years later the farmland was sold, divided up and then the starting point for those houses was, for whatever reason, the other end. They said that on paper, my neighbor and I each have 1.1 acres, but in practice there are only 2.05 acres of land between our two plots.

They have called this a real head scratcher and said while they have seen historic mistakes before on a smaller scale, this one is more substantial than most in residential areas and that I will likely need to get the city's zoning department involved at minimum, and potentially this is something myself and my neighbor would go to court over. They said that it is also possible that others in the neighborhood could be affected as there is more of a discrepancy than just our properties.

I am trying to get in with a lawyer but in the mean time can't get this situation out of my head. Is this common? Is there a typical outcome?

Kidnapped at 3 by aunt and uncle

    Posted: 07 May 2021 11:28 PM PDT

My sibling and I were both taken without consent and moved out of state from CA to OK. My grandmother provided them with legal documents such as our birth certificates. Our bio mom was staying with her a the time and they stepped in and told her that they could watch us for a few weeks while she got her life back together (our bio dad was in jail).

We were enrolled in school under the aunt and uncle's last name. Back then they didn't require much documentation. We were always told that our parents couldn't take care of us and that we were supposedly wards of the state.

Over several years, our bio dad came looking for us. He even came to the town that we lived in and went to the police department where the officer there just happened to be best friends with our aunt and uncle. He told us to go out of town and he would handle it. We went on many spur of the moment trips because he would show up.

At 17 I tried to get my drivers license and they would not allow their last name just by her word and told her they had to go by the legal documents provided. I then went for a legal name change. After that, they contacted their attorney and I am not sure how it happened but they were allowed to "legally" adopt us.

I found my bio mother four years ago. She tells me that she made a police report and continued to beg my grandmother to tell her where we were. My grandmother has passed and so has my uncle. I am so disgusted by the life I had to endure with people that abused me when it was so unnecessary. They took us because they couldn't have children of their own.

We were conditoned to believe that we were abused and not wanted by either of our bio parents. Now that I know more of the truth, I am disgusted by the fact that I was raised by unloving parents who were abusive when I could have been raised by my sweet and caring mother who went on to have two more children that she was more than capable of raising.

My question is this. If this were to get out to authorities, could there be charges brought up on my aunt?

    Bouncer took my real ID

    Posted: 07 May 2021 11:02 PM PDT

I entered a bar here in South Dakota to pick up some friends as a DD, When I was approached by a bouncer and asked for my real ID I showed her it and told her that I was simply picking up a couple friends in the bar and that i was underage(20) and to come in to find them because they weren't picking up their phones. She took my real ID and said I can bring an officer to get it back.

I am from a different state where you are allowed to enter bars at 18 so I didn't know and just recently moved to South Dakota where you have to be 21 to go into a bar.

My question is should I just bite the bullet and get a new ID or request an officer to get my ID back and will I face legal repercussions if so.

Girlfriend being mistreated in psychiatric hospital [MA]

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:36 AM PDT

I am so angry about this I don't even know where to start. This is quite long but i really need help. TLDR at the bottom and a list of what they've done in the middle.

In December my girlfriend had emergency spinal surgery for cauda equina. She has gotten most of her leg and bladder function back and is in physical therapy for leg strength / function. She has some permanent nerve damage and she uses a wheelchair part time. She also has a lot of body wide pain and was prescribed Cymbalta by her pain management doctor. This triggered a manic episode with psychosis (it apparently can happen in people with latent bipolar disorder) and I took her to the ER.

She ended up being hospitalized because they decided she was a danger to herself (she went voluntarily). I was not allowed into the ER because of covid but did talk to the nurse and made sure she knew that my girlfriend was a part time wheelchair user. This got lost in translation somewhere.

Yesterday night (Friday) she called me and said she was having trouble walking and the facility they sent her to was not wheelchair accessible and they would have to transfer her if she continued to be unable to walk. Today (Saturday) she called me and told me

    • They could not give her a wheelchair because it was a "safety issue", nor could she bring her own
    • That they couldn't help her get to the bathroom because "they don't do that here"
    • Her roommate and another patient had to help her get to the bathroom and then to the landline phone so she could call me
    • They didn't give her her morning meds until another patient helped her to the nurses desk
    • They never gave her breakfast and another patient had to bring it to her cause she couldn't leave her room without assistance
    • They cannot transfer or discharge her because it is the weekend

I called the hospital (she signed a HIPAA release for me when she got there) and basically asked them what the hell is going on. The nurse had a thick accent and every time I asked how they were helping her get around the hospital they said they "couldn't give her a wheelchair because it was not that kind of hospital" and that "there are no psych hospitals that allow wheelchairs because they are a safety hazard" (wtf). When I asked if they could just help her walk by holding her up (she can still move her legs just not very well) they didn't understand what i meant and kept repeating that they couldn't give her a wheelchair. I eventually got transferred to the supervisor who seemed surprised and said she would talk to the nurses (i don't think this ever happened).

They sent an NP down to "evaluate the situation" and my girlfriend was told that "she isn't paralyzed (duh) so she will be fine and isn't in any danger" (???). So i call back the nurses line and ask them to explain why they won't help her get to the bathroom bc i am pretty pissed at this point. The nurse hangs up on me and proceeds to yell at my girlfriend about how she won't be told how to do her job and doesn't have to justify her decisions (to me). My girlfriend called me crying (cause she got yelled at).

I just don't know what to do at this point. I am not allowed to visit her in person because of covid. I feel like i have just made things worse for her. I'm the one who took her to the hospital when she didn't want to go and she only went because i asked her to trust me. She thought she was absolutely fine but was also convinced she could come back from the dead and was hallucinating.

I tried calling NAMI but they are closed on weekends. I also tried the attorney general's office but they don't take calls on weekends and the voicemail said it would take 1-2 weeks to address any complaints.

TLDR: girlfriend is a part time wheelchair user who is hospitalized for a manic episode. Staff won't let her use a wheelchair or help her walk, even to go to the bathroom. They haven't brought her food or meds and she has been relying on the other patients to take these to her. When I called the hospital the nurse yelled at my girlfriend until she cried about "not being told how to do her job". I am so scared for her and I don't even know if any of this is illegal. I don't know what to do. Any advice helps. Thank you.

Controlling ex husband using private investigator relatives resources to keep tabs on me . Is that conflict of interest or against the rules for said relative?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:39 AM PDT

I left a controlling husband last year. I moved into a new place yesterday, my change of address was complete yesterday, and hours later he texts me nonchalantly mentioning my street name when I haven't told anybody where I moved to.

We do have a child, so I know he'll know where I live eventually but he enjoys dropping hints like that to me to make me feel like he's in control still.

Do PI's have access to the USPS system? Because I learned afterwards that his brother and sis in law just got their PI certificates. Wouldn't that be a violation on their part, in using their resources to help him gain access to my info like that?

    Thank you

Sold a car. New owner abandoned, so I paid to have it towed back to my house to avoid any troubles. What now?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 07:21 AM PDT

Asking for a friend who is undocumented.

As I understand the story, he sold the vehicle to someone through Facebook--transferred the title, etc. New owner supposedly lost the title, so it was never filed. My buddy gets a call from the police saying the vehicle had been abandoned in a parking lot and he needs to come get it. He has it towed back to his house. Now what? Buyer had blocked him from messaging.

South Dakota. (Though I think there may be Minnesota plates on it--being undocumented is tough.)

Contractors tore down my porch without permit.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:00 AM PDT

So I arranged for a contractor to extend my back patio. The goal was to pour concrete and then extend the roof.

A few weeks after I call the contractor to ask what date he planned on arriving to do the work. That day he came by and said his boss thinks it would be better to do a completely new roof with a flat top. I said "no, the roof has to match the rest of the houses in the neighborhood." He said "oh yeah it'll look great." I asked if it is going to look exactly like it does now and the man replied, "yes." Then I asked him to email me pictures so I could see what it looks like before I made a decision plus this needs to go to the county to get a building permit.

A few weeks go by, I'm at work and I get a call from one of his workers saying they were there to prepare the patio to pour the concrete. Note: I was in class, 1 hour away from my home, at 8:00 am. Unfortunately, there was a language barrier between me and the worker. I called the boss and he answered and sounded annoyed that I didn't want to go through with the work because they never told me they were going to start. I inquired about the permit and the CCNR I signed with my builder and he said they should be fine.

So I leave work ASAP and find that my porch is completely gone. And all the wood, and shingles are loaded up in their waste truck.

Then I see they're building a flat top screen room and not and actual porch. I never signed for that screen room, and I they don't have a building permit. So I stopped the work and told them to leave.

So, what are my options? I want my porch and I refuse to pay these guys for ruining my house.

    Concerning tiny house purchase clause?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:22 AM PDT

So I'm in the process of buying a tiny home and am reading the contract now. Everything looks fairly good except for one-

"Additionally, should MTH, its officers, agents, employees, successors in interest or assigns be found liable in damages, be caused to pay damages or to pay for legal representation arising out of any claim or action brought in whole or in part against Buyer. Buyer agrees to pay, in full, any damages so incurred or paid and any and all legal expenses, court costs or other costs paid by MTH, it officers, agents, employees, successors in interest or assigns."

This part concerns me. So literally if something inside of it breaks at the fault of the builders (let's say the loft collapses the day I get it and it kills someone and injures me) I will somehow be held responsible for any costs the builders pay in court???

If anyone can help me understand this that would be amazing. I don't have much money that's why I'm purchasing a tiny house, so a $500+ Hour fee for an attorney is really not something I'd like to do, but if I have to I will....

Neighbor purchased 25 acres acres behind me. Wants to build a house ~10 acres from the main road and wants to use my property as an easement rather than come in through the main road. Can he force an easement on me?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 06:46 PM PDT

    Lot line https://imgur.com/a/NTbEO34

As the title states, my neighbor wants an easement my property for where he wants to build a potential house. Located in South Carolina.

In the link, my property is the blue triangle and the green dot is my house. The long rectangular plot of land to the left is the land my new neighbor purchased, and wants to build a house where the red dot is. They want to use my land and create an easement where I drew the purple lines, but I don't see why they can't create a road following the path of the yellow lines I drew coming from the main road.

My assumption is due to the location of where they want to build, they don't want to have to pay the extra costs for clearing out trees and running utilities along the yellow lines. It would be cheaper for them to cut through my yard, but my thinking is why should I have to suffer the burden for them to save money? If they don't want to pay to run utilities that far, they can build closer to the main road instead of building that far back. Do they have any legal right to create an easement and would I be forced to grant them one?

IA: semi trailer ran off the interstate multiple weeks ago, spilling their load in the ditch - cargo still there. Is it fair game?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:27 PM PDT

A few weeks ago (possibly over a month) I passed a semi in the ditch on the side of an Iowan interstate. I've been passing it almost daily - the semi and trailer were pulled out fairly quickly, but the cargo has just been sitting in a large heap at the bottom of the ditch. Would it be illegal to see if there was still anything worth salvaging?

A boy broke my son’s finger at school. He walked up and stomped his hand on purpose and admitted to an administrator that it was not accidental.

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:56 PM PDT

United States/Georgia. My son (age 10) was playing with his friends on the playground during recess. He was lying down with his hands stretched out in front of him. Another boy came over, raised his foot, and stomped his hand hard enough to fracture his finger and split his fingernail...seemingly just for fun or just to see what would happen. My son then hid under a slide attempting to calm himself down (he was worried about crying in front of his friends.) After 10 minutes his friend took him to a teacher to explain what happened. The nurse put it in a splint and gave him ice. This happened shortly before the time we normally pick him up. When we arrived the administrator (vice principal I think) explained the incident, told us the kid admitted fault, and assured us he would be "in a lot of trouble at home" (the boys father works at the school). I am in no way satisfied with any of this. The school has a zero tolerance policy for fighting and bullying and I feel like this qualifies as both. What can I do? What should I do?

Pool guy has been putting normal chlorine into my saltwater pool while I was gone for 6 months

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:07 AM PDT

I'll try to keep this short. I'm in the military and am the proud owner of a saltwater pool or at least I used to be. I serviced my own salt water pool (its easy just check it once a week and add a little salt or a lotta salt). When i left on deployment I hired a pool service company told them it's a salt water pool they inform me they service all types of pools including saltwater. Cool you're hired. I get back home first thing I do is hop in my pool. Notice it smells like normal chlorine and isn't salty. Check out the salt system, its all out of whack. I luckily have a camera pointed into my backyard and have recordings. Go back through and find pool guy dumping some liquid chemical into the pool. For a saltwater pool the only thing you add is salt. There fore they Fed up big time.

How should I proceed. Call the company 1st or lawyer up? Small claims court? If I do call the company do I let them know I have video? Last note I'm not a dick I don't want revenge or anything. All I want is to make sure I don't have to pay out of pocket for them causing potentially thousands of dollars of damage. Just want to enjoy a salty pool

    In-Law Tenants Refuse to Vacate

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Just about 2 years ago my in-laws (mother-in-law, father-in-law, and their adult son (my brother-in-law)) were on the verge of homelessness, so my wife and I agreed to let them move in with us and our child under a month-to-month rental arrangement. The original plan was for them to live with us 1-2 years while they waited for a Housing Choice Voucher through the Baltimore County government. My BIL lives in a room in the basement, MIL/FIL have a room on the 2nd floor. Plan was to build out an in-law suite in the basement together, but it was not fully completed before we both became physically unable to finish the project. Nonetheless, the in-laws have all had unrestricted access to a kitchen, bathroom, water, power, internet, etc. during their time here.

Turns out they had no clue about the Voucher timeline. I check on their spot in line over a year's time and extrapolated, and it may take another 5 years before they get to the front of the line, even without the impact of the pandemic factored in. The living arrangement already wasn't working out by the end of year 1, so a little over 6 months ago we gave them written notice of our intention to terminate the lease as of 4/30/2021. We chose to give them 6 months notice instead of the legally-required 60 days, and included a list of resources they could turn to for help.

We checked in on them more frequently as the months went by and it was clear to me that they gave up the search almost immediately. Their only income is MIL's Social Security disability check of about $800/month, which isn't enough for many apartment communities who insist applicants have income of ~3x the rent amount. FIL turns 62 in a few months and expects to collect $575 in Social Security Income (SSI) by taking retirement early. (BiL has never held a job and lives off his parents so there's no income of his to factor into this). I told them to keep looking (especially for mom-and-pop rentals), and avail themselves of the resources I provided them (social worker phone #'s, etc.) since I don't know how to navigate the ins & outs of the public assistance system.

The deadline (4/30/2021) has passed and we have told them they need to vacate immediately. They squandered the generous timeframe we gave them and are demanding we let them stay until FIL collects SSI and they have higher income to find something. I found them a motel with a weekly rate that they can swing for a few months between MILs disability check and all the stimulus checks they've gotten (they've recieved a combined $9600 in stimulus payments since we convinced them to apply as non-filers).

My FIL demanded a copy of the lease and is now asserting he's going to fight this in court, instead of taking responsibility for doing hardly anything to prevent this crisis of his own making. Although I'm certain he has no case, it seems there is no way they're going to leave voluntarily and I'm not certain what my legal options are. I know I can't physically force them out myself, and I'm not sure if the eviction moratorium applies here. Needless to say, my wife and I don't care about salvaging the relationship; we just want them OUT. This is in Baltimore County, MD.

I have a redacted lease and termination notice but can't post links to the pdfs without the post being removed. Can't find guidance in the wiki on how to provide those but I have them.

[TX] HOA sending out emails on new house bill, telling us how we should vote

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:50 AM PDT

So, my HOA is a rather large one we cannot currently change due to the subdivision still being built, and the builder have majority control until the last house is built. Texas has a bill on the house floor that would create additional requirements for HOAs and penalties for failing to respond in a prescribed timeline. Our HOA sent out an unsolicited email as follows:

YOUR ASSOCIATION AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE ARE UNDER ATTACK AT THE TEXAS CAPITOL

House Bill 3367 and Senate Bill 1588 are rapidly advancing and will forever damage Texas property owners' associations and the professionals and volunteers that serve them. It is critical that our communities rise up and stop these bills now! If passed, the bills will suppress the rights of property owners' and will intrude into the daily operations of associations in addition to increase in fees and costs for associations and residents. If the bills pass communities will have unsolicited involvement from attorneys and government bureaucrats as well as other damaging requirements and restrictions. Please take a moment to view the flyer attached from the Texas Community Association Advocates (TCAA) and please follow the CLICK HERE link to send a message to the Senate District and House voicing your opposition to the passing of these bills. Thank you for taking the time to support the freedom of your Association and communities across the great State of Texas.

    Respectfully Submitted,

On behalf of all Associations throughout the Metroplex, <Company name> Association Management, L.P.

I believe when e-mailing lists have been used inappropriately in the past, opponents have been able to use the same mailing lists for communication as well. We have nothing in our CC&RS that outline messages between the HOA and members, or a default opt-in to non HOA management. For or against, I don't believe this is right, and could be in violation of laws.

Just bought an old house, previous owners still have things there, liability concerns

    Posted: 08 May 2021 07:02 AM PDT

    Hi,

We just purchased an older home in MA, sale went through on Friday, however our insurance does not activate until this Sunday.

The previous owners still have a significant amount of stuff to move out, and have asked if they could finish moving it out this weekend. I initially had no concern with that, but the more I thought about it was concerned for a number of reasons:

    • The house is older and in poor condition - there are plenty of potential hazards and things that are potentially not in compliance with current code
    • The previous owners have 4 kids under the age of 8 and it appears that they want to bring them with them while they pack.
    • The obvious concern with homeowners insurance not being active until the end of the weekend.

The purchase was cash, as-is. I both want to let them get their stuff and definitely don't want to be responsible for it, just want to make sure I don't have any liability if someone gets injured or something gets broken. I was considering downloading/modifying one of the many liability waivers available for free online...

I would appreciate any thoughts on if I should be concerned here and how we should go about protecting ourselves.

When she tried to reset her account, it says email doesn't exist. We tried talking to coinbase and it says they disabled the account though we aren't sure though. They also said to contact the police and file a report. That's what we did. Is there anything we can savage from this?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:59 AM PDT

We are in the process of closing a new house, and the property line runs directly up the middle of a shared driveway and splits the detatched garage between the two properties. The house we share the garage with is vacant and there has been no success in finding the owner or contacting them about possibly buying the building.

We want to tear down the garage (at least our half) in order to expand our yard and it's honestly an eyesore. The building is in such poor repair that I don't see any way of removing only our half while leaving theirs standing. We are still waiting to hear back from the realtor to see if the garage is an encroachment, but looking at previous sales it doesn't look to have been an issue.

Some more info on the exact circumstances: There is a single lane shared driveway that leads up to a shared 2-bay garage. Each bay is divided by a non-structural wall, and the foundation seems to be different for the two sides. The concrete of the driveway continues into the neighbors bay and our bay has a gravel floor. It is a single building where each half has been independently maintained by each property, down to our half being freshly re-shingled and painted while theirs has holes in the ceiling and walls. The property line according to the city runs directly up the center of the driveway, and divides the building in half. There seems to be electricity run to the entire garage, and it has a dedicated breaker box in our half. I will link pictures here in a bit once I get over there to get some.

We are located in central Indiana

California: Roommate and I moved out and went our own ways. Internet bills are under his name, but I've been paying them. I can't get a hold of him to cancel the service and I've been stuck paying the bills.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 12:11 PM PDT

I've been trying to cancel my service with my ISP and they said they need the main account holder, my roommate, to do it. He blocked me since we moved out and I've been trying to reach out to him thru his friends and family but I can't get a hold of him. I also tried using people search websites to find him but I can't seem to get a hold of him.

My roommate is the main account holder and the monthly bills only has his name on it. However, I'm linked to that account as an authorized payer, so I've been the one paying for the internet for the past two months even after we moved out because he didn't cancel.

I called my ISP and the representative said that should I unlink my account, my roommate would be held liable if the account were to go to collections because the account is under his name. Is that true? Is there anything I can do to cover myself? I've tried everything to get a hold of him.

I just don't want a collection record on my credit report.

edit: Just to clarify, my account is linked to his on the ISP's website only so that I could log in and pay the bills. My name isn't on the actual bill itself.

[OH] girlfriend experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:56 AM PDT

The title says it all. My girlfriend works for a very large clothing retailer in the United States, specifically in Ohio. Her manager has been sexually harassing her in the workplace with verbal statements for about a year now and she barely came to me about it. I can confirm that only one coworker witnessed it but whether or not she'll agree to get involved is questionable at best. Forgot to add she's 20.

Would anyone please have any advice?

My upstairs neighbor is driving us insane!!!

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:49 AM PDT

I am in New York. My upstairs neighbor is a mentally unstable, single middle aged woman with no children. I'm not sure what her diagnosis is, but it resembles some sort of mania. She has fits of yelling and screaming all by her lonesome day and night. It's loud and inappropriate. Most of it does not make sense, but she swears and yells racial slurs. No one else lives with her, so I assume she is yelling to herself. She drives, but erratically. I personally do not think she is mentally fit to hold a drivers license. She takes up two parking spots right in the middle of the only handicap entrance to the sidewalk.

Additionally, she harasses my fiancé and I if we ever see each other outdoors. The other day I was leaving for work and we ran into each other. She stopped dead in her tracks called me a dummy and gave me a death stare for the entire time it took me to drive off.

I've complained to the condo association, but they've done nothing. Meanwhile, my friend comes over, smokes a cigarette on our porch (totally legal), the lady complains and we get a fuckin warning letting for "bad odor." I've had it. What do I need to do from here?

I lent a substantial amount of money to a family friend 15 years ago. I've only received 25% back to date, and they cut off all contact

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:39 AM PDT

    This is in California.

About 15 years ago, I stupidly lent a substantial amount of money ($10K+) to a family friend who told me she and her children were going through a tough financial time (looking back on the situation, this was obviously a lie). She promised to pay me back by a certain time, and I've only received about 25% of the principal payment to date (excluding any interest). Soon after, she and her family ran off to another city in California. The only proof I have of this transaction is a letter with a written signature stating she would pay back the principal amount + interest by a set time. She's blown way past that due date by multiple years.

She's cut off all contact with me, and any attempts to reach out have led to nothing. The only potential contact I have is her brother whom I was close with in the past (I'm not sure he knows of this situation).

Is there anything I can do? I realize it's been years since the incident, but I'm hoping to find some sort of resolution.

    Thanks everyone.

    Additional Details:

The interest charged was below 10%, and the last payment I've received was 14/15ish years ago.

Street parking signs, how far apart do they have to be legally? (Long Beach CA)

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:25 PM PDT

Do i got a street parking ticket for exceeding time limit. I didn't see any signs nearby when I parked. Later i saw a sign about four houses ahead that had the 30 mins parking only. Behind, the nearest sign is on the next block about 7 houses behind.

I am trying to contest the ticket because i didn't see those signs. Especially coming from the direction I came. Some help would be appreciated!
