I guess this is what I should expect when I put myself out there...

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:25 AM PDT

    Hi r/Entrepreneur,

TL;DR: I made a simple speed test of hosting providers, shared that on this sub, some people said thanks, and some flung turd. The turd was uncalled for.

Earlier this week I've posted a speed test of what I called the eight biggest hosting providers in the US.

It got some traction, but then another fella did a very negative post in which he accused me of being biased because of money.

His post also got traction, and people started downvoting my original post. And while I expect people to disagree with the premise of my OP, this guy got so far as to snoop around my website trying to "out me" as a fraud.

    So, two things:

    1. First, I think this clearly violates the "no personal attacks" and "avoid unprofessional communication" rules.
    2. Second, since I put my name and face out there for everyone to see, I want to say something in my defense, if I may.

    A bit of backstory.

I run a few online businesses. I get quite a few questions every now and then from people. Some have an existing brick-and-mortar business and want to expand into the online marketplace. Some want to go the online marketing route like I did and don't know where to start.

Quite a few people get stuck at the "picking a host" stage. I know I've been there. I started my first site on a shared hosting package with Namecheap. All I was looking for was a quick and painless installation and then just getting to writing. When my sites started earning meaningful money, I graduated to a VPS with Digital Ocean with Serverpilot.

There's a 55-year-old dude. He started making clay pots during the pandemic and wants to try selling them online. I will not recommend him to bother with setting up a super optimized VPS. I would have just let him go and fix up a Woocommerce store on whatever the host that all the gurus recommend.

But as I said, Google is going to start ranking sites based on their speed. I can't in good conscience recommend just any host. If you can set up AWS, or manage a Digital Ocean droplet, go for it. If you can't then choose a super simple shared host that's secure, least painful to use, and fast.

So I thought it would be a fun project to test, say, the ten most popular hosts that people use. I:

    1. Went to the top Google results for "best hosting".
    2. Made a list of hosts that were most commonly mentioned.
    3. Deployed the same website to all of them and recorded their speeds.

I did this as a personal study to be able to tell people, "Hey, Mike, I've tried Godaddy and their six-buck package was actually slower than, say, Dreamhost's four-buck plan".

I did not choose the hosts based on their affiliate commissions. I just took the hosts that other people recommend more often, and I objectively ranked them the best way I could.

I did the test and found that there are two, maybe four, that I can recommend in good faith based on their speed. I went and applied to their affiliate programs.

Why? Because some people like to sign up from there. I do not force anyone to buy through my links. Most people just ignore the link, forget it, then Google the host a month later and sign up from there. No commission for me, and that's fine.

If some people buy through my link, I see that as a bonus and not my main goal. (Btw, I made exactly $0 from this. This is not my job.)

Was it a super scientific test? Of course not. As some people have noted, many things could affect the speeds in my scenarios. This is why I:

    • Specifically outlined my testing routine,
    • Called this an unscientific test several times throughout,
    • And put disclaimers in there urging people to take my findings at face value.

Was it helpful? I know to me it was.

    • I ran the same raw test with my closest-to-life scenario.
    • I got some results that I felt were interesting.
    • Many people upvoted and left positive comments on my findings.

I also hot-linked all the results so that people wouldn't even need to visit my blog at all.

(If you think my test was worthwhile but flawed, you're welcome to expand on it. PM me and I'll send you the Duplicator file with the website and the admin credentials.)

I'm done. Sorry for the long read.

PS. Guys, I know. The way the Internet is like now, it's full of Joe ShareASales who pay 2 cents a word to a guy in India to write some clueless nonsense and try to rank it on Google. Nowadays when I google "best XYZ" I don't expect to see objective data anymore.

This is exactly why I do this. The Internet needs people who actually know what they talk about, and I like to think that I am doing my small share for that to happen by helping real subject matter experts put stuff online.

I am a real person and I welcome dialog. Let's talk more, reach out to me on Twitter.

PSA: The "8 biggest website hosts" are not Kinsta, SiteGround, Dreamhost...

    Posted: 07 May 2021 02:34 PM PDT

I saw this post yesterday claiming to have tested the 8 biggest website hosts and I was surprised it hadn't been downvoted into oblivion. Sure, it was a pretty webpage with multiple colorful graphs. Is that all it takes?

    8 Biggest Hosts?

Not even close on this. GoDaddy (f*@k GoDaddy btw) is easily in the top 8, but the rest of them? Where's Amazon, Digital Ocean, Hetzner... Not a great start when the premise of the test is inaccurate.

    8 ____ Hosts

So what do these 8 hosts have in common? Paid Affiliate Links

Here's a short summary of the affiliate programs offered by the 8 selected hosts

    • Kinsta affiliates earn up to $500 for every referral + 10% monthly
    • Siteground affiliates start at $50/sale
    • GoDaddy affiliates earn an average a 10% commission
    • Dreamhost affiliates earn up to $200/referral
    • Hostgator affiliates earn $65/signup and up
    • GreenGeeks affiliates earn up to $100/sale
    • Bluehost affiliates earn $65/signup
    • Hostinger affiliates "earn at least 60% from every sale"

And just take a closer look at OP's blog. The homepage heading is "Blogging your way to financial freedom" and this page breaks down how much affiliate revenue OP is making on affiliate links per month.

Sure, But Everyone Has Affiliate Links

There are so many other reasons to be critical of the post, many of which were brought up in the comments:

    • Sample size at each provider is 1
    • Comparing the cheapest offering from a provider with low-cost options to the cheapest offering from a premium-only provider is not an apples-to-apples comparison
    • Different location will have different speed results
    • Was this all based on a single page-load for each hosting provider?

Anyways, this has gotten a lot longer than I intended. Just don't believe everything you read on the internet.

STARTUP IDEA: Never Wait In Line Again

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:58 AM PDT

Hi there everyone, to begin this is just an idea and I would love feedback and potentially other people who would be interested in helping.

It is mother's day weekend, and as you can expect, everyone is shopping for flowers, gifts, etc. While I was at the store today, I overheard others complain about how long the line was, I then asked "if there was a mobile app that would allow you to scan your items and pay for them without waiting for self-check out, would you be interested?" They all unanimously said yes.

However, I HAVE NOT DONE COMPLETE MARKET VALIDATION, as of yet. I am planning on going back to the store soon, and creating a survey to see how many people would be interested in paying a subscription for an app like this.

The idea behind the application is to allow customers to walk into any store, scan the barcode of a desired item, and pay for it through an application that is linked to the store's online webpage.

For example, if I were to go to target and pickup bananas, I would scan the barcode of the bananas with my phone, and I would be automatically connected to target's online store and pay for my bananas right then and there. This process would be registered as an online order internally, but the store would be notified that this was done in house.

Ideally, this service would follow a SAAS model and customers would pay $5 a month to keep the application on their device.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR FEEDBACK.

    FLAWS WITH THIS IDEA:

    1. Instacart has already tackled this idea, however, people still need to go to the grocery store and grocery stores are still busy as ever.

    1. I have not done enough market validation to know if this is an idea that is worth pursuing, however, I am highly confident that most customers would be on board

    1. This idea is not targeting a niche. This is targeting a very broad market, which typically does not always pan out how originally intended.

The Spaced Repetition Technique showed me the key to long-term learning and memorization

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:55 AM PDT

Whenever we learn something new, the information that we learn has been shown to gradually decay in our brains over time. That's why we tend to have a hard time recalling what we've learned whether it's for a test or life in general. This was always a challenge until I learned about the Spaced Repetition technique, which is simply the most EFFICIENT way to retain information.

Spaced Repetition involves learning through repeated spaced sessions over specific periods of time. Through this repetition, we switch from absorbing the information as something we need to memorize, and instead recognize it as a fact. Through this, we move the information from our short-term memory to our long-term memory so that we can easily remember it.

There are a few key ways to implement Spaced Repetition into your learning including the use of flashcards and scheduling. I've been trying this out for myself and break it down in depth here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBxl_OmirQQ

One of the great benefits of this technique is it takes advantage of how our brains work and makes it a lot easier for us to retain and recall information over a long period of time.

Getting my product sold in places.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:45 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm working on our pitch and the last puzzle piece is to find where we can be sold. Looking for some advice on how to go about this. The run-down: we're alcoholic coffee. We're not in production yet, so we don't know whether or not we'll be made to be considered a "malt beverage" (which is what most hard coffees today are), or if we will be made with hard liquor, making us eligible to only be sold in liquor stores. Either way, I live in a big city that thrives off both coffee and alcohol, and I'm sure that we can sell our idea to some local liquor stores, grocery stores, bars and restaurants. I'm thinking we just need some sort of verbal/written confirmation/interest so that when we start our friends & family round of fundraising, we can say, hey, we have XX amount of places interested in selling our product. Of course then there's the problem of if they want samples. We can make some mock-ups in our kitchen, but obviously they'll be different when we get to commercial formulation. Or we could just give them an empty bottle with our label on it, and say this is what it's going to look like, just imagine it filled with delicious Irish coffee or a spiked chai tea latte. Most people have had Irish coffee before. But it wouldn't be hard to fill it with a homemade prototype, so they get the full idea of what it looks like. My main question is: what specifically should I include in our pitch when I'm talking to these store owners? How much we want to sell it for? Ask them how much they'd be willing to sell it for? Any advice on anyone who's sold a CPG in stores, restaurants or bars is greatly appreciated.

How many people are doing non e-commerce businesses and do you sometimes start wondering if its worth jumping on the bandwagon?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:39 PM PDT

Ive always been into physical businesses, mostly in the consturction sector. I look at people making sales on these e-commerce stores and i always wonder how lucrative are they. In my experience, most of the people i know who are doing well in business in life are from physical sectors.

But maybe thats biased, because i do not hangout in the online communities. So if you have a non internet based business, what is it ?

Should I work with a Facebook Ads consultant/specialist?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:37 PM PDT

Hello everyone! At the moment, I am managing a small company, we sell curtains and drapes and things are going pretty well. Soon (at the start of June) will open an online store and I want to boost up the things using Facebook Ads, in order to get more reach and also to generate sales/leads.

Here is the thing; I never used or created Facebook ads and I just had a meeting with a new consultant from my country which is good at creating strategies to target a good audience and also has a lot of experience in Facebook Ads. Should I work with him to help me create good ads or should I just trial and error until I discover the "perfect" custom audience to target? Thanks in advance!

How can I become a distributor with a low budget?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 12:59 PM PDT

I want to become the distributor of a sports goods company in a country where it's not that popular. It definitely is a niche market (all countries except USA is a niche market for this sector, even the US is niche).

So there will not be a lot of sales. And I need a way to become the distributor. I have around 5k dollars.

However even in the worst case I can get half of it back.

The story of Alan Schafer (1914-2001). The infamous entrepreneur from South Of the Border

    Posted: 08 May 2021 03:52 AM PDT

Alan Schafer founded a beer stand in 1950 on the border of North and South Carolina that grew into a roadside resort that is still family-owned and still in business today. He famously managed to get the transportation authority to change the planned route of I95 when it was build, so it would pass right through his resort. He went up against a lot of politicians and hired minorities in the area before anyone else did. Once in the 50's, when a group of KKK clan members showed up at his business to intimidate his employees, he came bursting out of his office with a loaded rifle and chased them off himself. They never bothered his staff again.

Also in more recent history, while disney world closed down for months, South of the Border stayed partially open throughout the entire Pandemic, serving truckers and travellers with essential services (gas, convenience shop, motel, etc)

The Roadside resort is currently run by his grandson.

Working two jobs and starting a business

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:27 AM PDT

I know I am going to get a lot of critique on this post for being a bum. To that I say.. go right on ahead. I deserve it and won't argue.

I live with someone I absolutely despise for the last 6 years. I live with this person because getting money for rent in some other place would require me to get a second job The only skills I have is being a security guard.

I have a conference meeting two days ago with the coo of a million dollar design and marketing company.

I showed him some work I did on some sites I was designing in the past. He said that if I put together what I showed him then I have a talent and need to develop it.

I want to turn it into a business of course. I am not best buddies with my coworkers or my boss but they like the work I do.

Working 8 hrs a day allows me 6-5 hours to work on my side hustle but I am worried that if I move out on my own instead of spending a year just focusing on my hustle where I am it will kill any possibility of me developing a business buy draining the necessary hours needed for me to perfect my craft and also take away the necessary hours I need to sleep to maintain focus and actually concentrate.

I would like to hear from those more successful than I how you manage to pick up two 8 hour jobs and build what it is you wanted to build.

Business Started By Reddit Based on Decisions Made by Redditors *READ BELOW*

    Posted: 08 May 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Hey Reddit, I had this crazy idea of starting a business that was solely created based on decisions made by redditors in this thread. Every 3 days, I will make a post related to the last post to move the business forward and it will be based on the most upvotes a comment gets on that post (by you guys).

I will manage the process flow and framework of what happens next and make sure to organize all documents and responses in one place.

For the first post - WHAT DOESN'T CURRENTLY EXIST THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO SEE COME TO FRUITION? - This exercise is open ended and can attack any industry, please comment your ideas/thoughts and the one with the most upvotes will be selected for the next step.

Let's see if as a reddit team, we can see a project through and launch!

    Regards,

    Dima

EDIT: I will be looking at responses in 48 hours to evaluate. Please upvote!

Why are there more followers than leaders in the world?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:27 AM PDT

Of course mathematically and logically there needs to be more followed than leaders. This is why companies are able to have many workers instead of everyone fighting for executive roles. But why did humans evolve or organize like this?

I know it is both genetic and environmental when it comes to determining if someone will be a leader but you'd think humans would evolve to all want to be leaders since they are often the most successful. I guess being a follower also works for most people.

It seems to me like some people are just naturally better than others when it comes to being successful in the capitalist system. Even Warren buffet has said that he just happened to be born in the right place at the right time with the proper traits to succeed in a capitalism system. He says we ought to help those who just aren't a good fit in our system. If people like elon musk, Buffett, and Bill Gates were born 1000 years ago, they likely wouldn't have had the same success.

So when it comes to entrepreneurship, it seems there isn't as much competition as there should be given how big the rewards can be. For me it seems like I have easily been able to find financial success. This is largely because I live in a developed country and have a burning desire to work for myself and build something. It just makes me wonder what would happen if everyone was equal in education, skill, genetics, work ethic, and attractiveness. In such a world would socialism be the answer? Or even communism? Because imagine if every single person had the same burning desire to be "rich". And they simply wouldn't let up fighting the competition. Seems like society would get nowhere. So in my opinion the idea that education is the most important thing for lifting the world out of poverty is crazy. If everyone was educated the level of competition would increase and there would still be people in poverty and those who were rich. Those who lead and those who just want to follow orders.

Is there any truth to this, or is this hypothetical scenario just completely crazy because the world would never have turned out the way it is?

Who do I need to hire to automate my business?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 11:03 PM PDT

I run a bespoke Developer Relations agency that assists highly technical companies with community building, content creation, and other marketing services.

Currently much of my staff is 1099 contractors and I am fixing to leverage a few vendors that could cause my scale to increase pretty substantially. I've been doing a good bit of work myself, and would like the ability to scale to the point that I only directly handle certain projects while my staff handles most of the main projects.

I would like to know what the best way to streamline my operations and allow for someone to manage my team and set appointments when I'm unavailable or just feeling like shit (Thyroid problem out the ass)

Any advice on who I should hire or things like that?

What are side-hustles for people with no hard skills?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 04:15 PM PDT

My friend, who exists and isn't me asking through a fictional arbitrary image, has a lot of soft skills that would be great in entrepreneurship.

He's punctual, good with people, a fast learner and great at customer service and fulfilling the work that is asked of him.

Problem is, he has no discernible hard skills. Went to school to get a 1 year degree in something that I now have a job in, but it's pretty eh and has no real paths to freelance work.
