Partnership Lesson Learned and Trusting your Gut

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 04:03 PM PDT

A friend wanted to start a biz in my field. I was happy to help, but a lot of work was involved. We decided to split it 80/20 (I'm 20%) since he really had no money to pay me for services. I felt I could help until he's up and running then get out. I suggested a USA so we wouldn't have exit issues and fully paid for this to be done. He wanted to take it to his accountant father (ok np) and came back to tell me we needed to raise 50K capital and I was to put in for 20% of this. And that he would have full ownership rights to my work. Anyway I'm outeee! Good luck and hope we can still be friends.

As a merchant, how to win the chargeback?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:35 PM PDT

I have a small web development business. When discussing with new clients, we discuss the monthly fee charged for monthly maintenance, updates, and hosting. Additionally, as part of the terms and conditions, we clearly lay out that the monthly hosting will renew until canceled. After 6-12 months, several clients decided to "chargeback" every single transaction since inception. Not only am I out the monthly payment, I'm also required to cover the chargeback fees, plus the cost for my development team for all of the work they have done over the period of time. How do you successfully win against clients who try to take advantage of the system? I provide documentation of our conversations, access logs with IP address, additional data form provided by the client, acceptance of terms and conditions document, copy of the terms and conditions, documentation and evidence of the work completed and accepted by the client; but still... the financial institution always seems to side with the client. I currently use Stripe as my payment processor. I understand that chargebacks are part of doing business, but come on, what am I missing???

Does anyone have experience on reaching out to big companies in attempt to get their product on the shelves?

I know they always say to start with small goes but has anyone ever reached out to big companies (even if it's just local) to get them to carry your product? How did you go about doing it?

Looking to help setup / optimise Google Ads accounts (no fee)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:59 AM PDT

    Hello people,

My names Ben and I'm trying to break into the digital marketing industry and looking to gain some experience in PPC.

Whether you have an existing Google Ads account that you'd like someone to review and optimise or if you don't run Ads at all but are interested in doing so, I want to help you.

I have certifications in Google Search and Display Ads so I know how to set up and manage Ads that appear on Google search AND on Google's display partners. I'm also certified in Google Analytics so I'd be able to interpret results of the campaigns and provide reports for you.

The only thing I'm lacking is experience and that's what I'm hoping to gain. I would not charge you a dime, though of course, you'd have to fund the Ad spend.

If you'd be interested in helping me out, message me on reddit and we can discuss things further on here or through WhatsApp.

    Ben

Has anyone successfully “Kickstarter-ed” a local business?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:54 PM PDT

Here's what I mean by that...

I'm looking to start a trash can cleaning business in my town and have done plenty of research on the industry. However, we all know there's always risk.

Has anyone ever advertised before taking steps to open the business in order to get enough people signed up for your service in order to make it viable?

Thoughts and advice is always appreciated!

Starting a business, need advice about splitting 25% each.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:01 PM PDT

I am starting a business with 3 other people. The business is split between guy 1 (investor mainly), guy 2 (will be the lawyer, he is our friend too will explore why this matters), guy 3 (the idea guy and the one who will help me with the work and me guy 4 the one who will take charge of the marketing of the company and do the work with guy 3.

Guy 1 wants to split the company evenly, I tried doing the splitting formula which obviously get me and guy 3 a better percentage, but they did not agree.

My point is, guy 3 and me are broke, this is an opportunity to start something, the guy 2 lawyer will work for free mainly but wants 25%(he will set up paper work and the company, make contacts, and do lawyer work). Guy 1 will just be the pretty face, he will help with getting us clients at the start and thats it. (might pay some stuff here and there but not really anything to warrant 25% of the company and its income)

Is this a good idea to split the company in 25% each? Like I dont know, guy 1 asked if we would rather have a higher percentage of the company but pay for a lawyer, but the way I thought is why give and pay some other lawyer if we have one we can trust and do it for free (25% if the company is his and so is the income) .

What do you guys think, will this prove to be bad on the future, what if the company exceeds expectations, do you think we might have problem leading the company?

We will be making a digital marketing company. Thank you!

TL;DR 4 guys making a digital marketing company, only 2 guys kbow their shit and will actually work, the other is mainly the investor and 1 is a lawyer who we know well and will work for 25% cut of the company. Each of us will have 25%.

Worried if this will cause problems in the future in the leadership and vision that me and guy 3 (who will work with digital marketing) have for this company.

Thank you and will really appreciate your advice.

I want to expand my film production business, I just don't know how to do it...

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:41 PM PDT

I feel incredibly stupid just asking this question but I'm just hoping to get some advice.

I'm a producer and director in Los Angeles, I've had some mild success working with companies like Ubisoft, Machinima, Warner Bros, etc; after acting in a lot of shows few years back. My goal is to create a small production company with a team of around five people, most of whom I've been working with to create content for the past few years.

Our business model would be multi-faceted with divisions for:

    - YouTube (Narrative, sketches, unboxings, Tested/Hacksmith-style creation, movie commentary, etc)

    - TV/Film (Sitcoms/Drama for streaming services, indie films)

    - Gaming (Streaming, mobile game development)

However I simply, obviously, do not have enough money to purchase a property. While we're creating a variety of content current, we're incapable of growing to the size we desire without a space.

What's the reality of me looking into getting a loan for the business (1 million USD) and a studio to create?

How to increase walk in sales and is there a way to go online?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:32 PM PDT

Business is a small grocery store mainly selling produce. Location is perfect no question about that, my prices are low so all good there, store also looks nice/unique and every customer leaves happy. For some reason business is still slow, i don't think there's anything more i can do on my end-maybe advertise on fb but honestly from the traffic alone i expected to be doing better. I noticed a restaurant across the street where cars would go to pick up orders. I realized it's people ordering online and it's those food delivery service guys that go pick up the orders. They seem to be doing well and I'm wondering if i can do this with produce. I have absolutely no idea how this works. Is there a platform/website where i list my business and can deliver fruits and veggies? Is this even a good idea for my type of business or just wait it out? Some days I'm happy with busy i was and some not really, lately it's been the latter..

    Technology to grow small businesses

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm part of a university graduate research team based in New York City that is looking to develop new technologies that help small businesses to be technologically independent and compete with the likes of Amazon, Walmart, UberEats and other e-commerce or big tech companies.

We're hoping to learn more about the different tasks that small business owners and employees carry out on a day-to-day basis, the different challenges that you face doing it and your experience with using technology solutions (if any) to solve those problems.

We'd really appreciate 10-15 mins of your time to have a casual chat and learn more about what kinds of solutions would best help small businesses, especially during COVID-19. This is a strictly non-profit and social impact oriented effort. Please do comment or DM if you'd be willing to share your experiences!

P.S If I'm going against any community rules, do let me know :)

    Opening computer hardware business

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 04:30 PM PDT

    Hello,

If I wish to open a computer hardware business, where can I source hardware in the retail prices? Who should I contact to get the prices Amazon or Microcenter or Newegg get them? Do large companies like I mentioned contact directly the manufacturers such as AMD, Intel or Samsung for example because of their high reputation, or they buy it from a 3rd party?

I want to start this business in a European country, not mentioning which right now. But I really want to create competition here. It seems like there are only 2 large hardware stores that match prices and damage the competition. I want to do something that will break this. For years I was not able to get a PC at a reasonable price. For example, when I buy a commuter from Amazon.com, it's cheaper, after shipping and tax calculation of the Amazon calculator than the same build, and usually with better quality components. Another example is i just recently wanted to buy a monitor. On Amazon it was 250$. Here it was 400$... (Tax is 18%, so the difference still makes no sense)

I want others to enjoy what I missed in childhood because my parents had no money, which is gaming PC. And now that I have access to online shopping, I realize how much they have been taking more than they should have

    Thank you!

thinking of creating a website like instagram with a marketplace. should i go sole proprietor or llc?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:55 PM PDT

now reading around, the main diff of sp vs llc is legal claims, like so creditor got a claim on my website then sp i would pay with my own $$$, llc with the companys $$$

but what if the website is self funding with no creditors?

what are teh legal risks of creating a site like instagram with a marketplace that warrants registering as an llc?

    Books

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Hi all, I skimmed through what was here and didn't see what I was looking for, which is:

I am looking for a book about business start up, but I am looking for the logistics, so more what I have to do legally and stuff like that. Most of what I find is "how to make money" or "rich dad poor dad" type stuff. I don't need a book to tell me about the universe having my back or some other nonsense, just a practical read.

    Any advice?

    TIA

Should I cut my losses or push through for ownership?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 05:32 AM PDT

I'm in a non-profit competition where some proposals actually move on to being a small business. Except I think my members and mentors are assholes. I initiated almost everything and no one else has contributed effectively. It's either dead silence or agreeing with everything I say. One guy would critique everything I say but offer no alternatives and I asked them to provide a better idea- nothing came. One girl likes to summarize everything I say and comment on how good or how we can use whatever input I made. I reached out to the mentor about group problems but he never offered solutions and stopped replying. In the end, I expressed my frustration to the group and told them that I'm doing all the work, I attended previous meetings and wrote the emails. Their reply was sorry that I felt underappreciated. That's not the problem. The problem is that the group isn't pulling their weight and I don't mind covering their asses but I feel like I'm doing the whole thing and they're riding on my coattails. Anyway, we all missed a meeting , in my defense my inbox didn't receive any emails that morning and the night before even though I intended on attending. Also, the coordinator didn't send one beforehand. I suspect that the mentor probably told her about group problems. Anyway, the mentor asked us if we want to continue. The three of us stayed. They start doing research. The girl creates a document for us and does some emails. There is list of questions that helps us to gauge whether we are creating a coherent idea. The guy answered the questions. The girl contributes things unrelated to the idea or product we have. Still some improvement compared to before. But, I can't even access the document despite asking twice. The girl also likes to ask questions that she could Google herself and bring the answers back into the group. Sometimes I find myself googling it for her. It's fine because I'm learning as well but I have a feeling it's so she doesn't have to search it herself.

We had a team meeting and you can clearly see on the mentor's face that he doesn't enjoy being here and sneered when I asked him questions. After the mentor left, the girl starts talking bad about the mentor. I wouldn't be surprised if she talked bad about me to the mentor and coordinator as she told me 'Don't feel that we don't appreciate your efforts and thank you. I'll let the coordinator know'. Know what? Moving on...now currently we're at a stage where we divided the tasks to write up a business plan but from the behavior of the meeting I am so disgusted and I want to leave but a lot of it is based on what I have put in and knowing the girl, she'll jump in and do the presentation that's coming up in three weeks. I feel that it's an abuse of intellectual property. I am also really tempted to send an email to the coordinator about all this and why I'm leaving. Not really sure if I'll receive any support from her though as I missed the second meeting.

Should I cut my losses or push on? Is there usually this much BS?

    Daily sales decline

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:49 AM PDT

I recently started a candle company as a side hustle and I have absolutely loved the process of building a small business. I had a fairly substantial social media platform before starting this business and when we launched, sales really took off! I was shocked at the amount of support and the number of orders rolling in. I thought it would be about 10 candles a month but it ended up being 20 candles a day!

    Buuuut....

we have hit a plateau (or really, a decline.) We were able to expect about at least $150 in sales a day but now it's dwindled down to $50 or even $0 some days. I know our daily average isn't much compared to a lot of other business but for me, it was very significant and not to mention encouraging! The decline is concerning to me.

Is this normal to fizzle out like this so soon after launching? Do sales normally decrease towards the end of a month? How do I offer our product to new faces without spending an arm and a leg in marketing and ads? How do I get my name out there when other larger candle companies can easily bulldoze me away?

A little info: We have returning customers and great reviews. I have zero training or education in sales, marketing, or business! I am just a creative with a dream and lots of determination to make it work! I am committed to learning all I can and making this dream come true for our family. Any wisdom, resources, or advice would be truly appreciated and valued!
