Hi guys. My friend suggested I start blogging about insurance principles and law because it is really appealing to potential recruiters, builds up my own studying and learning and is great for networking. I've even gone out and bpught my own domain. Does anybody have any experience in insurance related blogging and what do they think of it?

After on-site inspection for our homeowners insurance, Travelers changed their estimate of reconstruction cost to 45% over what we paid last year for our new home

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:19 AM PDT

I'd like to know if this is as much of a red flag as it seems. Last year we purchased a newly built home, from the builder. A few months later, I got around to getting homeowner's insurance. Initial over-the-phone estimate of reconstruction cost was 75% of what we paid for the home. That seemed reasonable, assuming the other 25% is the value of the lot.

Then they sent an agent to perform an on-site inspection. She seemed kinda clueless and quick to jump to conclusions, for example she assumed our bathroom floor was wood when it is clearly tile textured like wood, which I corrected. After the inspection, we received a notice that our new estimated reconstruction cost is almost double the initial estimate. The new estimate is 145% of what we paid for the new home. This makes no sense unless there's been tremendous inflation in the USD that I don't know about.

What should we do about this? Cancel this policy and seek another insurer? Is Travelers a scam? Are they trustworthy at all?

renter's insurance liability for damage to apartment caused by death of renter

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:12 AM PDT

my brother died in his apartment and he did have renter's insurance. He had a heart attack and was dead for a few days which caused damage to the apartment (...body fluids etc.) By law, the landlord had to have it BIO-cleaned before he can rent the unit out. The insurance company said that if he shot himself or something like that, this would be covered but since he just died it is not covered. I am a co-signer on the lease for payment guarantee purposes and will probably have to pay the cost out of pocket to the tune of $5k, I also need to get all his things hauled out and donated. This doesn't seem right to me. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

    public art sculpture insurance

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:17 PM PDT

Im building a sculpture that will be displayed in public for a few months. I've never purchased insurance for something like this before so I'm trying to estimate the cost for my budget and I have no idea. It's a 2000 dollar sculpture that will be displayed for 2 months, need liability and property coverage. Do any of you know what that type of insurance will cost? $20? $200? I have literally no idea and google just keeps giving me ads or like articles about really high end art insurance. Thanks!

Sudden loss of my father, have questions regarding AD&D benefit. California.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:32 PM PDT

My father passed away very suddenly a little over a week ago.

He was kind of an insurance fiend, had dozens of those little bs slips "complimentary AD&D benefit" from different companies, had several policies that he was paying for with AD&D riders and such.

Last Tuesday he drove himself to the hospital as he wasn't feeling well after work. While he was talking to the doctor, in mid sentence, he had a stroke.

He was admitted immediately of course, doctors found out that he had almost 0 platelettes in his blood. Because of this they were unable to operate. They later realized this was due to an extremely rare, extremely aggressive form of leukemia. Despite being practically religious about getting medical checkups, there had never been any indication that he had leukemia, including in blood tests that were performed less than a month beforehand.

He passed away the next morning after it was determined that he no longer had any form of detectable brain activity and the life support was disconnected at the recommendation of several of the doctors that had seen to him.

Would something like this typically count as accidental death? I know a little as I was once a licensed life/health agent myself, I know for a fact that many policies cover things like brain aneurysms for example.

My feeling is that this is exactly the kind of situation AD&D policies exist for, but I can't say for sure as the cause of death could be considered disease.

He was 64 years old and still working, with plans to work at least another 5 years (he renewed a 5 year lease for his business in March).

Any knowledge/advice would be very much appreciated. I am feeling very overwhelmed at the moment due to his many financial obligations. He did have about $100,000 in whole life insurance but the overhead for his business is enormous and that will not go very far.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:29 PM PDT

I'm studying short term insurance in South Africa, I would like to move to another country soon. I want to know will I be able to go to another country with my education and work as a short term insurance broker? Will I just need to study the other country laws or will my education not help me at all as it is not an international certification.

    Is Redirect Healthcare legit?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:01 PM PDT

My employer is offering to pay for a portion of a Redirect Healthcare plan for me, my girlfriend and our 4 month old son.

I looked into it a little bit, they say they pay for co pays but when it comes to a medical bill they "negotiate costs".

Does anyone know any specifics about this type of healthcare? Will I have access to adequate health providers?

My other option would be a State Subsidized Healthcare plan in through Colorado. I've only done a little research on that so far. It looks like I can get a bronze plan for about 300 a month. The Redirect Healthcare plan would be 210 after the discount from my employer.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

[Michigan] My car was legally parked and unoccupied, and someone hit it. Now my new insurance company is increasing my rate.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:16 AM PDT

My car was legally parked and unoccupied. An old man accidentally hit it. Why is Progressive increasing my rate for this no fault accident?

I don't understand why this makes me a riskier driver? It doesn't seem fair.

How to handle a car insurance lapse

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:44 AM PDT

I stupidly decided to let my car insurance lapse. To make a long story short, my vehicle required a repair, so I decided to let the insurance lapse until I could afford to get the repair made. It was an expensive repair, so I wanted to wait until I had more money in my bank account to get the work done on my car. The lapse in car insurance was for three weeks.

I got a letter in the mail (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation), stating that if I drove the vehicle during the lapse, I'll get a three month registration suspension. While I didn't drive the vehicle regularly, I did drive it a few times. I should have just kept my insurance policy active without any interruptions. That was not very smart of me.

The period of the lapse was for less than 30 days. I called my insurance company to get it reinstated today. I asked them if my policy is still in good standing, and they said that the lapse won't even show up now that I'm up-to-date on my payments.

The letter gave me the option of signing a declaration that I didn't drive during the lapse (which would mean I wouldn't have a registration suspension/penalty), or getting a 3-month registration suspension. For work reasons, I definitely can't afford the 3-month suspension. I'd have no way of getting to work/making my income. I have the option of paying a $500 civil penalty to get it reinstated without having my registration suspended.

Has anyone been in this situation before? Or have any recommendations on how to handle? I'd like to sign the declaration of non-vehicle operation, however, I don't know if there's anyway the state can find out that I drove during this period? I haven't been in any accidents, had any speeding tickets, or any encounters with police. However, I don't know if they'll review red light footage to verify that I wasn't driving? Or if they will review my odometer readings?

Another big concern that I have is that I'm trying to switch jobs. I'd hate to have a registration suspension (or a $500 civil penalty) show up on my record. Does anyone know if this is the sort of thing that shows up on background checks?

How much does an MRI cost on COBRA?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:39 AM PDT

Due to concurrent job change/lay off of my husband and I, we must go on COBRA for a limited time.

Worst case scenario we are on COBRA from July 1- Sept 1 (when I am eligible for benefits at my new job).

Best case scenario, my husband gets a job in the interim and we can get on his health care benefits faster.

I have a possible auto immune disorder and they requested I get an MRI done. It's scheduled for mid-July.

    My questions:

    1) How much will I need to pay up front through COBRA for this MRI? (I know that paying for COBRA itself is separate and expensive).

    2) I could wait until September but I don't really want to. For two reasons: a) I am in pain sometimes and would like to start treating/lessening it because it's very hard to work when I am in pain. b) I was hoping to get it handled before I start my new job the first week of August since it's kinda an all day thing and I don't want to take time off at a new job. Should I wait anyway?

Geico’s clerical mistake is costing me!! Need insight ASAP

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:23 PM PDT

Just found out today while car shopping that Geico has been scamming me on my current policy, as well as 2 previous policies. I mean all insurance is a scam at the end of the day but you know what I mean... So I called Geico while looking at a vehicle to find out how much insurance would cost if I were to purchase. I tell them to copy my current policy as a guideline to indicate the pricing on this particular car of interest.. only to find out that on my current policy, they have that I drive 75 miles a day for work. Um what?! My job is about 7 miles away from my home. I normally wouldn't care except for the fact that I've been overpaying by about $240 a year FOR EACH POLICY I've had with them! How could this happen?? When setting up the policy 3 yrs ago, I know for sure that I did not and would never say that I drive that many miles to work. I feel as though I'm being conned and when I asked the rep if I can speak to a manager about this, she was less than helpful and said there was nothing they can do about refunding me any money.

I should mention that she fixed the mistake w/ my current policy and told me that my bill will now be about $30 less per month.. which adds up when you factor the whole year.

But my 3 questions are: what can I do at this point to recoup the money because of their clerical (and costly) error? What are the odds that I'll get my money back on the 2 prior/closed policies? Lastly, would contacting the Better Business Bureau help in any way?

USA - Was involved in a car accident, 100% other driver’s fault.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:58 AM PDT

I was driving in a string of cars 55-60 MPH. The other car pulled out from a side road straight into me. They were cited. Obviously I had neck and back pain.

The next day I'm already into my PCP got X-rays. Got an appointment in the afternoon with chiropractor. Got the car to a shop for estimates.

36 hours after the accident, their insurance company calls offering $800 for pain and suffering. I had already missed 2 days of work and am looking to be out a few more. So I decline that amount.

Friday afternoon I receive a call from their insurance about my car, it's totaled and they willing to give me about $6000. They tell me I have 5 days to turn in my rental. So now it's Saturday, I didn't agree to the amount because I wanted to look over their paperwork. They say non negotiable, but I still want to see. The place that has my totaled car is closed Saturday and Sunday. And the final day is a holiday. So I feel like I'm getting shafted on this whole 5 day deal.

So I'm wondering, when it comes to pain and suffering, what's a reasonable amount to want/expect. I'm estimating 1500 in lost wages, I know HR can quantify it exactly. But just the stress alone from the notification of the totaled car and need to purchase something else so quickly in a holiday weekend. On top of the actual issues with back and neck pain.
