What was your best accidental investment? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:19 PM PDT Sort of a funny question, inspired by me finding something I bought a long time ago as a hilarious gimmick: Zimbabwe Money, specifically 100 trillion dollar Zimbabwe banknotes. Paid like 3 bucks each for them around 2010 or 2011 as a gimmick, now the fucking thing sells for 125 on eBay. [link] [comments] |
Can anyone validate this company my coworker signed up for? It wreaks of a scam to me. Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:53 PM PDT http://www.centuryinvestmentglobal.com/ Like the title says, my coworker signed up for an investment account through this company and they are promising him crazy returns (13% weekly). I know there has to be some catch to this but I don't know how to convince him that something isn't right besides the fact that they are promising him 13% returns every week. Can anybody explain how he is being swindled? I will link the "contract" he signed with them. (Text message between the two) http://imgur.com/Fkz1Ilg [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:45 PM PDT I have 22K invested with a family friend/financial advisor who uses Oppenheimer. YTD I'm down -4%. I have a diversified portfolio of small cap, emerging market, large cap, some bonds, etc. Other funds within OP are positive and I know it's just this year as negative but I noticed my fees are between .94% and 1.74% which I think are average/above average. I don't actively contribute to this account as I'm working on maxing out my 457 plan through work but I want my money to grow at a steady 7-10% that the stock market generally averages and with perhaps less fees. Again, he is a family friend but it's my money. I know that with the DJIA and S&P being up and down the 4% could just be an anomaly but I want to make sure that the fees/returns aren't killing me. I don't even think there's a way to invest in mutual funds/IRA's on my own and even if there were, I'd rather not go through all that. So 2 things – anyone else use Oppenheimer and what is your experience? And what do you suggest I do in my situation regarding fees and fund performance? Again, the 4% is just YTD so I'm not freaking out but I'm not a fan of Oppenheimer based on their other fund performances. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:15 PM PDT I am in my early 30's and I've finally started dialing in my finances. One path I am interested in is buying some land just outside a developing city somewhere in the hopes of building a home -- and some profits. Is anyone else doing this? My question is does anyone have a resource to find out where the burgeoning cities are. I grew up in a quintessential up and coming city and it was know for a decade that the town was going to blow up, and blow up it did. Does anyone or any website keep track of these things? I'm also open to opinions about the endeavor! Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Federal tax receipts have plateaued Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:06 PM PDT Federal tax receipts appear to have plateaued in a fashion very similar to 2001 and 2007. Total receipts show a similar trend. The large drop in Q1 2018 seems to be mostly due to the changes in corporate tax rates, but the absence of growth since 2015 suggests broad based growth has ended. It will be very interesting to see if revenues recovered in Q2 and where the trend line is established by Q3. Does anyone know when Q2 numbers are due? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:28 PM PDT Hey there, 2018 will be the first year I file my own taxes for, and I was wondering if someone could explain how taxes work in regards to investing. By investing, I mean buys/sales of stocks, funds, and also crypto currency. (Gains / losses) If this is not an appropriate subreddit for this type of question, sorry and could I be redirected. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:13 AM PDT Hi, I've been working in finance for about 9 years now, including retail banks, investment banks and in several major cities in US and Europe. I find Finance genuinely interesting and I enjoy discussing it with people and if possible explaining things I'm familiar with. I'm thinking of starting a blog or other site to provide a point of view which is hopefully unique and enjoyable or even entertaining. Do you have any advice as to what type of topics and questions would be interesting to read about from someone with my background? A few potential topics include: - Old banks coping with new tech - Comparing banking across the world - Explainers about how parts of Banking work in more simple terms Thanks in advance! Appreciate your time. [link] [comments] |
Noob Question: Tea Leaf Reading of Future Trends Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:19 PM PDT I'm a hold-and-forget investor so this is mostly academic, though I can rearrange my 403b without penalty. Here's an idea that we've been kicking around (and no, not going to bet the house on it). There's been a lot of talk about the end of the bull run of the market, and my own theory is that since the market is people-driven, there's room for misinformation, panic and outright deception (cf. "The Big Short") in addition to data and its statistical analysis. Why not keep an eye on what other people do, much as Google's search engine itself runs on a ranking system partly based on how many other pages have linked to it? Here's the idea - flag when everyone else is panicking about the economy. Looking at Google Trends, the peak search for "Recession" was in January of 2008, while the Dow was still reasonably high but wavering downward. Hindsight says this would have been a pretty good predictor of dire problems, but then hindsight is like that. Might it not make sense to keep an eye on social inputs (say, searching for "recession") and use that information along with the usual cascade of numbers, arguments and bone-castings that go on, or is this already part of the investment community's toolkit? Can someone please explain to me how to manage my income and expenses??? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:59 PM PDT I have only 1 checking account / debit card, and the only thing I can come up with to manage how much percentage I want to split up with my income is to make a google spreadsheet and mark it and split it up that way and do all the math manually and look through my statements and put it all in. How the hell do people will properties, taxes, income, expenses, 10+ credit cards manage it all?!?! Is there something I don't know about? How do you go and split your income and what not? How the hell am I supposed to be financially literate?? Please please please explain to me. There just HAS to be a better way. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:15 PM PDT After ramping up to purchasing $85Bn of bonds etc every month, they started "non-renewing" (meaning, not -selling- exactly, but not rolling over matured securities) $10Bn/mo for a quarter, then $20Bn/mo for 3 months, and so on up to $50Bn/mo in 4Q17 or 1Q18, not sure when. This "unwinding" was praised by some, derided by many, and predicted to be an unmitigated disaster by a few pundits. I haven't heard anything for the better part of a year. Does this mean it wasn't a disaster? Anything else notable about what happened / what's happening here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:21 AM PDT For someone who has zero experience in the insurance field, how important is it to have a good insurance underwriter? What exactly makes someone good at underwriting? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:55 PM PDT Lending 50k for 60 months with an 8% interest rate. (Ammortized Loan) I would receive $1,013.82 for 60 months, by the end of 60 months the total interest earned would be $10,829.18. What do you guys think? Is this a good investment? I don't really have any plans on doing anything else with the money and this was offered to me. [link] [comments] |

I don't think that this counts as advice, so... Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:59 PM PDT Could someone with experience in forex trading tell me how accurate Trading platform's forex simulator is? It's on mobile, so I don't expect much but I really want to know if the experience that I'm gaining there is really preparing me for what I will see if I were to start forex trading. I'm very new to all of this and any help is appreciated. If this is considered advice and should be put under the advice thread, then I will move this there, otherwise it will stay here. If someone thought another great depression were imminent, what would he invest in? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:22 PM PDT Over the past year I've heard plenty of people worry about the market crashing, hard. Other people thing a recession is more likely. Anyhow, I'm not interested in debating whether it is realistic, most of us are aware stocks grow in the long run. I'm simply curious about what someone would do to benefit from a market downturn. Short positions are obviously an option, but are there stocks that would thrive on a downturn? Hopefully this thread will help people new to investing, not everyone knows being bearish is an option. Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:13 PM PDT A year ago I asked how to do this and have just gotten back to it and don't understand how to do this. Any help please ? Can anyone point me to a book, website or video that can explain how to track my investment performance in retirement ? I would like to track the real and nominal returns while taking into account the potential for additional money going into the investment and also distributions taking money out. I would like to do this on a month by month basis. Thanks for any help. previous post..... https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/comments/6gl318/tracking_performance/ [link] [comments] |
