My mom is threatening to have my boyfriend arrested for statutory rape. Please help me I’m begging

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 09:48 PM PST

My boyfriend and I will have been together for 3 years this year. We started dating when we were 14 and 15. We're about to graduate and we're going to attend the same college. He's a great person and he's so freaking smart. He has a solid 4.0 GPA and he wants to be a scientist. My mom can be great. We all usually get along but my mom was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and she goes from being happy to evil overnight. She swears she loves him like a son and she knows he'll be turning 18 next month( February 18) but I won't turn 17 until May 24 and she's been using that to her advantage recently. I don't live with my mom bc she decided to move an hour away to be closer to her secret boyfriend so I live with my aunt. So now that I've given you the backstory, I'll bring you to today. My grandpa let me use his car after I got my license bc he can't drive. Today, he told my mom he needed to be at his doctor which is two hours from where I live but only one hour from where she lives. She was blowing up my phone today saying I needed to come get him bc his appointments are my responsibility not hers and that i needed to get him tonight and have him stay at my aunts house . I never said I wasn't going to get him, I just wasn't going to get him to stay the night because there is no where for him to sleep. She completely spazzed and called my aunt, she told my aunt that if I didn't do everything she wants until I turn 18, she'll make sure I have a terrible life. She threatened to take me out of sports and band so that I couldn't get a college scholarship and she threatened to get my boyfriend arrested for statutory rape. We have so much ahead of us. We want a life together. We're about to graduate. We didn't even have sex until I turned 16 which is the legal age of consent in South Carolina (where I live). I just want to know, can he actually be arrested for statutory rape and what can I do to make sure she doesn't legally hurt him?

Bought first home. Part of fence 6" over property line. Owner claiming $400k in damages.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 10:47 PM PST

I recently bought a home in Seattle and I have lived in the house for about 4 months.

Recently, I received 50+ page envelope from a law firm claiming that I owe the owner next to my home $400k in damages because part of my fence was built on their property. They said I need to contact them in 30 days or would face legal action. They are claiming I owe them payment under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). I don't have debt to them so I don't know how that act applies.

I talked to our realtor, escrow company, and called King county. Nothing was in my buying agreement of a easement or lien, the title was clean, and no formal complaint has been filed to King County.

I am not sure what to do. Do I need a real estate lawyer? Or if our fence is on their property, can I just move it? My real estate agent says I have nothing to worry but we might need a lawyer...so that makes me worry.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Idiot Neighbor harassing family with drone.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 02:25 PM PST

I've had trouble with my neighbor for years. Spotlighting my house. Stuff trash in my drain ditches to wash out my roads. Just all manner of nonsense over the last four or five years. Now he's bought a drone that he's flying over my home taking pictures. My wife and 15 year old daughter are afraid and have stopped using the pool and hot tub. I contacted the police and surprise, no help there. What can I do?

Company owes me money - is going out of business [NY]

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 02:39 PM PST

I'm a freelancer (sole prop) in NYC. A company owes me about $9,000 and hasn't answered my emails for several months. Their accountant's email address is now bouncing, and no one else will answer me. Phone number is disconnected.

The invoice is from May 2021, and they were occasionally answering my pokes to say they'd look into it, up until a few months ago. They were a very good client of many years who often paid late and I didn't mind (that was just the tradeoff of working with them), so I was giving them ample time on this, but it is now apparent that they are going under.

I sent out some feelers and heard through my contacts that they are closing down. I don't know if that means bankruptcy or what. None of my contacts know for sure.

I don't have a formal contract, but I do have an email paper trail authorizing the work and agreeing to the cost, and a Purchase Order issued by them once the work was finished and approved, so that I could send my invoice. That was our standard procedure.

(They actually probably now owe me x2 or x3 due to NYC's Freelance Isn't Free Act)

My question: What are my best steps to collect?

17 yo. State of IL. Provisional license pulled because I was driving past curfew. I was going from my moms to my dads house.read full post.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 06:12 PM PST

I'm 17 and my parents are divorced. The curfew on the provisional license in IL is 10pm. A couple nights ago I realized I left a homework textbook over at my dad's house that I needed for online class the next morning (which starts at 8am). It was 10:30 and I decided to run over (about 20 minutes away) and pick up the book. The curfew restrictions say "7am to 10pm unless driving home, to school or work." I thought I was covered because I technically was driving "home" for a "school" purpose (my parents split 50/50 custody). I had no other stops planned, I just wanted to get the book and return to my mom's house. I accidentally didn't see a "no turn on red" sign and turned on red anyway. A cop pulled me over and I showed him my license. He said that I wasn't allowed to be driving because I wasn't coming from school, work or an adult supervised organized activity and gave me a lecture. He then told me I must wait for my parent to pick me up and wrote me a ticket. My dad was out of state for work (he is a pilot) and my mom was also working a late night. Police took me to the station until my mom could leave work and my car was towed. This was a really harsh cop that was very angry with me. The dmv just suspended my license until I turn 18 which is 8 months away. I'm really pissed and so are my parents. We're been charged hundreds to recover my car plus a $400 fine. Is there any action we can take? I pretty much need a license to get from one parent to the other and to my job which is 45 minutes from my dad's house. A good defense I'm thinking of is the fact that both my parents were working and there was no one else to drive Me, and I needed that book for school and homework the next morning. Wow I really can't wait to be 18!

The DMV seems to have reissued my old license plate number without taking my name off of it first and now I’m getting parking tickets that aren’t mine. South Carolina.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 01:39 PM PST

I leased a car that I returned in 2020. I have a receipt from the dealership stating that I turned the car in and a receipt from the DMV stating the I surrendered the plates.

In October I received a parking ticket for a car that I don't own from a city that I live hours away from. The license plate is the same as the one that I turned in.

First I contacted the department that issued the ticket. They told me that it's out of their hands and that all they can see is that the car is coming up in my name.

I called the DMV. They said the fault lies with the dealership that I turned the car into.

I was having trouble getting hold of the dealership so in the meantime I went to my local DMV in person. They looked it up on their computer and could see that the car isn't mine but for some reason couldn't do anything about it then and there. They told me they would forward the issue up to the home office but that I should still try and contact with the title clerk at the dealership.

Well I couldn't get in touch with the title clerk so I called Honda's corporate office. They looked up the VIN number for the car I had turned in and it has no connection with the ticket I was issued.

So now I'm back at square one. I can't get in touch with anyone at the DMV home office. They don't even have an option to leave a voicemail for anyone because they're so understaffed.

I've received my second notice for this ticket and it has already tripled in price due to late fees and I'm concerned that the next step is going to be an arrest warrant or a collections agency.

Should I just pay the ticket? I know the chances of seeing that money again are slim to none. That's not my concern. I'm worried that if I pay it, it's going to be that much harder to get this issue resolved (almost like I'm taking responsibility for it). I'm also worried that this person is going to keep getting tickets that I am then expected to pay.

Is it time to get an attorney at this point? I can't believe I even have to ask this over a parking ticket.

Signed a Rent Stabilized Lease in April, Broker Now Saying that Apartment is Not Actually Rent Stabilized

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 04:09 PM PST

    Hello,

My partner and I found a great deal on an apartment in NYC last year and signed a lease, starting April 15, 2021. At the time we were looking exclusively for rent stabilized units and we were told that this was one. We made certain that the lease explicitly stated that the apartment was rent stabilized, it was included in a bullet point on the rider, signed by us and the landlord.

We know that we are supposed to receive a lease renewal 150-90 days before the end of our lease. We did not receive one, so we reached out to the landlord requesting that they send us the lease renewal. We did not hear back from the landlord, but the broker for the apartment knocked on our door today. He told us that it was a mistake made by his assistant and that neither the building or our apartment is rent stabilized. We would not have taken this apartment if we had known it was not rent stabilized.

The broker is offering us a new lease for one year at the rate that we currently pay, but that after one year they could charge us whatever they want. We do not want to have to move now or in a year. As we have a lease that explicitly states that this is a rent stabilized unit, what are the next steps that we should take? What resources are there that we can use? Do the terms of rent stabilization apply to our apartment since we and our landlord signed the lease?

    Thanks!

My boss is refusing to pay me. (Texas)

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 07:46 PM PST

I recently got hired at a smoothie place. I have been working for two weeks, I am supposed to get paid for the first time this Friday, but my boss is refusing to because he "doesn't feel like" writing a check. He told everybody who wants a check that they'll have to wait another two weeks, and fired one of my friends for arguing with him.

I'm 15 and certain that effects his decision since he is aware that I don't have access to a lawyer.

He owns the store. Is there anything that I can do?

USA - Illinois: Non-exempt hourly employees forced to stay on the floor during lunch breaks to "watch the machine". Does this violate labor laws?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 05:57 PM PST

I'll TLDR. We are a small operation - 5 hourly employees, one person per shift. Our boss gives us a paid lunch, however mandates we take it on the floor as to not stop the machine for 20 minutes / half hour, and so that we can act when something occurs.

For example, if the raw material runs out or an alarm occurs, we are expected to immediately end the lunch break and get back to work.

Because we are still being told to work on our breaks and lunches, does that violate labor laws as we don't actually get one? How can you claim it's a break or lunch if you're still doing your job?

And to clarify, if we sit in the break room during the break or lunch, he actually yells at us and sends texts and emails about how we are supposed to be on the floor at all times.

When can an employer dock an employee’s pay who is salary based?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 11:09 PM PST

Household members had covid so I informed my employer and they told me not to work for X amount of days. However since I personally wasn't tested positive they told me I wouldn't be paid.

Are they within their legal rights to dock my pay? I've only been allowed to work 6 days this month and I've been paid accordingly but I was under the impression that salary meant I'd be paid regardless. This is in Texas and I know most laws regarding employees don't apply here.

    Thanks in advance.

Company threatened us if we discuss our wages

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 07:27 PM PST

Some of the people in my company are getting raises (but not everyone). They sent out an email stating that we are not to discuss wages as they are confidential and doing so could result in our termination. My manager was telling me this, to which I asked if the company was aware that this is illegal and could open them up to lawsuits. My manager was shocked by this info. Without mentioning me personally, my manager consulted a higher-up who asked if this person (me) was trying to be a troublemaker. Apparently the higher-up also responded in a somewhat threatening manner and implored us to direct any issues to HR so as not to cause "problems" within the company's different locations. My question is, am I correct? Is it illegal for them to fire and/or intimidate us? If so, what can be done?

Co Owner forcing sale with incorrect ownership amounts on deed

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 01:20 AM PST

Bought a place with parent in 2018, parent died in 2020, sibling has filed partition action which I don't want to fight, but

sibling lied to an attorney who they paid to execute an official court approved document in order to gain undue financial advantage in the sale of the property.

they were very pushy about me & my parent signing these documents under the premise that my parent's share would be split down the middle and everything would be easy fair by the numbers and everyone would leave happy.

I have the title company records that shows who paid how much, and the numbers in the document titled 'Grant Deed' are incorrect. I got served the papers from their lawyer a few days ago.

Does this make this document inadmissible in court, or can I somehow use their falsifying information to my advantage in appealing the partition action?

Why would a family pass a piece of land around in a triangle using warranty deeds in a short perood of time? It seems fishy and likely for an abuse of benefits.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 11:06 PM PST

    • Mother and father own land, transfer to son 1
    • Son 1 owns land, transfers to son 2
    • Son 2 transfers land back to mother

This was all within 2 years and all using quitclaim deeds. Something is up, right?

Being filmed in a bedroom without consent

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 04:28 PM PST

So I (29F) live in Florida and I dog/house sit for this guy fairly regularly, about 2-5 times a week as he has a job that keeps him overnight. I've been doing this for a little over a month and I bring a suitcase with clothes, food, toiletries, etc… he's fine with me doing laundry, using shower, kitchen, normal everyday things. But tonight I found what looked like a camera mounted on a fake beer/soda can in his room facing the bed. The wire seems to plug into something under the dresser that I can't see. It's a hoop brand of that matters. I didn't notice it until AFTER I had changed clothes. He NEVER told me about this camera, I covered it with a towel now, but I'm totally creeped out. I'm wondering if it's legal to have a camera in a room and not tell anyone? Is it even recording? How do I tell? How do I breach this subject with him? Should I tell him I can't watch the dog anymore tonight and leave? Yes I sleep in his room and keep my stuff there (it's a one bedroom) it was his suggestion. I have pictures of the camera (I don't know how to post them, sorry) it says hoop on it if that helps,

    Hearing

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 01:10 AM PST

I am a first offender in college. I recently got a drunk in public and possession underage charge. I missed my court date for the possession. I lost the paper they gave me for it and called the office but never got a response. Today I was given a document today saying that I have a new court date I must appear at. I was given the notice in person by a college cop today. I have not yet gone to court for the drunk in public.

I am on here asking as to what should I expect? I know I will most likely have to do community service and pay fines and legal fines. But will I be serving jail time for missing this? Should I except another form of punishment?

I apologize if these are stupid questions but I have no idea what to except as I'm a first offender and only wish to know what could be in store for me. I'm in the state of Virginia.

Attorney kept (stole) $1780 filing fees for himself instead of paying it to the government and sent us falsified documents so that we'd think he actually filed it. Is it enough to file a police report against him?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 01:09 AM PST

Payed immigration attorney close to 5000$ (retainer + filing fees) and he kept all the money for himself and did nothing for our case at all. Led us on a lie for almost a year with falsified documents such as the receipt notices from the USCIS. Is it considered a felony and can he be prosecuted if we file a police report?

My dad passed away on Monday. Question about social security and marriage.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 09:00 PM PST

    Maine

My mother(66) and my dad(59) were together for 31 years. Recently he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and got married shortly after that. (Less than 6 months ago) However, some other unknown medical condition took him Monday morning suddenly. (He avoided doctors most of his life)

My mother is unemployed and probably shouldn't work due to her health.

She's under the impression she can't collect any money due to how long they were married. Is this true? Is there a loophole or something because they were together for 31 years?

If I’m mailing papers to a court, should I have them sign for my package?
