Training an Employee Who Then Leaves and Starts Competing Company.. Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:05 PM PST I run a small manufacturing business (20 years in business) with a bit of a niche market. The type of work we do isn't really taught in school and mostly has to be learned on the job from experience. There's not many other places that even know about this work let alone do it. A few years ago I hired a young kid around age 22, I decided to make him my protégé of sorts. I spent extra time showing him the proper way to do all of the work, and helped him more than I normally would other employees. I did see some potential in him but at the same time he was still young, inexperienced, overly confident and prone to a lot of mistakes. He worked for me for about a year and a half and then I found out he was trying to do similar work out of his home garage. I confronted him about it and he said he was just doing small odd jobs for extra money. I had a bad feeling about things so I fired him. He lives in his Mom's basement and she's pretty wealthy so within a few weeks of being fired he went and started a competing company to mine with help from his Mom. He used almost identical website layout, social media bios, advertisements, logos and he even went as far as using photos from my shop in his ads. He lacks most of the machines we have but he advertises all of the same work my shop does.(Even though he can't do it and has to send to other shops to do) He's a typical kid who tries really hard to appear a certain way on social media but is about 50% of that in real life. (Fake it till you make it type) It severely pisses me off that my company has been around for over 20 years and came up with many complex ways to do jobs and now he's copying them from us. I taught him about 80% of what he knows and no one would know that but me. We are true professionals and have many years of experience and he's basically just riding on my coat tails and imitating me. Has anyone ever dealt with this? Are there any legal actions I can take or is it best to just go about my business. I highly doubt he will last as he's renting a shop, having to buy all new tools & equipment and subbing half of the jobs to other people. I know the business and don't see that being sustainable. I also know without having anyone to guide him he'll be making a ton of mistakes. My business is well established and we do all of the work in house and don't rent anything or owe anyone money. It's super frustrating to see his ads and posts pop up when I know he's fake as a 2 dollar bill. (Edit- I see all the replies lol we don't have 2 dollar bills in Canada) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:01 AM PST Hello everyone! To start off, I'm a very much newbie here, so any help at all would be appreciated. I'm a 19 year old girl from a super small European developing country, known for its failing economy. The one profitable field in our country is tourism, because our country's history goes back to c. 1.8 million years ago, therefore other countries are much attracted to our sights, food&wine, however, due to covid situation i don't think it has as much relevance as it did before. Another beneficial thing we have- labour work is super cheap here. you can hire a a worker for only $1-2 an hour, that's why most people here started real estate businesses and building lots of houses... but since our country is too small, i'm not sure for how long can this continue. Now, i do have $25k in my savings, but also have no idea what to do with it. I have a gap year tho, going to quit my job mid December and start focusing on this altogether. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Business Use / Personal Use Limbo Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:54 PM PST Hey fam, Asking this question for my wife (we're in Georgia on the US btw). She is currently trying to complete her inventory forms for her crochet business this year and she came across an interesting predicament. At the beginning of the year , she sold 3 press-on nail sets and some crochet goods but she switched over to only doing the crochet. She still has materials left from when she was doing nails but is only using it for personal use at this time. Because she is no longer selling nails, would that make all of those raw goods fall under personal use or would they be considered business since she did make sales earlier in the year from them? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Does built up business credit apply to a new business or is it EIN specific? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:04 AM PST I own a small e commerce business and established an llc to conduct business through. I also obtained an EIN so i could open a bank account and get a business card. The banker was telling me they were going to run a business credit check on me, which i hadn't even heard of but it made sense. [link] [comments] |
How do I know if I’m ready for commercial space? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:01 PM PST New business, started Jan 2 of this year. We've done great, got our LLC started and on track to make $250k in revenue this year. Currently spend $7k+/- per month including COGS, supplies, contract labor, etc. (including $800 home office space reimbursement) Wife and I (owners) are on salary at $60k each per year. All that aside, there's a 1500 sq ft office space 1 mile away that is available for $1750/mo. We feel that we're outgrowing the space in our house quickly and want to try and get this space if possible. "Problem" is, we're 23 years old, and a little afraid to take the leap. What do you guys think? Lmk if I'm missing any crucial info. TIA [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:51 PM PST I recently got interested in a book called The Core Value Equation by Darius Mirshahzadeh. It does actually have some good advice and exercises to choose core values. I dug deeper and found he also sells a system called Scale M.A.P. I hopped on a call with a terrible sales person and they want $7500 for an online weekend seminar on how to implement his Scale M.A.P. system. While I could afford that, I am not sold on the value. What are some alternatives to this to
By watching some YouTube videos I found that EOS Traction and Scaling Up (the book) are alternatives, but I am not familiar with them. Any thoughts are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:23 PM PST Hey there guys! Newbie here! So I'm wanting to start a small business. I know what I want to sell, I've found a few vendors and I know it's going to take off. Just needs to get out there once I get everything else sorted out. Few questions! When buying your products for stock, did you take out a small business loan? When did you move your small business into a warehouse and such? (Still starting out, so would I just use my personal address?) What website do you guys use to create your website? Who has the best shipping rates for small business with shipping large packages? (27lbs) [link] [comments] |
Texas, ice cream business not charging sale tax? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:32 AM PST Whole sale and retail, seems like something is wrong.People come in from another state and buy 18-wheelers of ice cream bars( a dozen for $4 wholesale). While they don't have to pay taxes the company still pays taxes for ingredients, bag, and employees or am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:43 AM PST I currently use paypal, but the fees seem to be pretty high. Is there a better invoicing app out there for small businesses that don't charge as much? All that I need it for is to send invoices for payment, and deposit to my business account. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

How to put expenses for new business on credit card? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:30 PM PST We've been in business (logistics) for about 7 years, and I've been looking into spinning off part of the company so that we can begin to target a new customer niche to future proof us a bit. There are smaller reasons this makes sense that I won't get into here. So...many companies I've worked with obviously put expenses on a company credit card to shave that 1-2% in points/benefits off. I'm looking into doing this, as I would be taking on the bulk of our cash flow post-split. My questions are specifically:
Thanks for any advice, been mulling this over for weeks and stuck on these points. [link] [comments] |
For those of you who own both property and business - how is it? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:54 AM PST Hi everyone, We are interested in purchasing a property + restaurant for $2.XM in Southern California. We are planning to create a LLC for the property and S-Corp for the business. For those of you who have been owning and operating restaurants or business on your property, what are some pros and cons you have encountered thus far? Do you recommend it? The biggest upside that I see is i) no need to worry about lease renewals and rent increases, ii) building equity of real property through rent payment from S-Corp to LLC, iii) potentially higher exit with SBA loans for future buyers who want to buy our business / property together. Obviously, the biggest con is capital held up in real property, not for the actual business. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:22 PM PST We had an employee voluntarily quit earlier this year for a new job, who after a few weeks laid him off. Unemployment reached out to us (we are in PA), asking for different information. We of course told them he quit our job voluntarily, but now it appears like we are the ones responsible for covering his Unemployment benefits, because he worked more for us this year than his new job. This seems pretty messed up to me, is this typical? It feels pretty wrong that he left our job voluntarily yet we are the ones paying for it even though we didn't lay him off. [link] [comments] |
How much did you pay for ADA compliance Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:36 AM PST Reading endless posts about websites getting sued for ADA compliance by shady ambulance chasing lawyers. There are some tools out there to scan your website, but how reliable are they? Do these lawyers go after you if they find even ONE single missing alt text, or do they go after websites who don't even try? I have an "accessibility policy" which I used a generator to make. It's a bunch of jargon to me. I have no idea of it is legally sound in any way. It seems like this is something best done by a person who is an expert in this, but coming out of pocket with $1000+ isn't feasible. Nor is coming out of pocket with $10,000 settlement to some scum bag lawyer. The extortion really has me angry beyond reason, but what do you all suggest? I can just envision the scenario: "what do you mean you're sueing me for ADA noncompliance, I used XX tool to scan my site" [link] [comments] |
Anyone aware of a US based shipping container customizer like this? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:43 PM PST Looking for something like this as a ticket/storage shed for a mini golf course. Nothing too customized inside but just needs these kind of windows. Have found some places that do restaurant type buildouts and guard shack buildouts but not exactly what we are looking for. This place is in the UK but shipping craziness now probably means we need to find a US based place. Midwest is ideal. https://cabinscontainersandtransport.com/product/shipping-container-cafe/ [link] [comments] |
Need help with a group SMS app for our customer service team (United Kingdom) Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:40 PM PST We have a small business and employ 2 customer service reps who currently use their individual mobile phones to send text messages to customers. This is problematic because if one member of staff is away, no one else can see the text message they sent to respond to messages. Most of our customers prefer quick text messages rather than email. Is there an app anyone can recommend where we can use our existing UK telephone number to send / receive SMS messages from with multiple users logged in via different devices? Skype seemed like it would potentially be a good fit but has recently changed the way it works so SMS messages sent from the app show up as "verify" and we no longer receive SMS's to our Skype number. Any other solutions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:36 PM PST I was looking into selling on faire and I have tried doing my research on other sellers experience with faire and found a mix of opinions on whether or not they liked it or found it beneficial to their business. If you have or currently do sell on faire, I would love to hear what you think of it :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:23 PM PST My wife and I run a small biz that is growing. We bought the biz from someone who had absolutely no formal policies set up. We are wanting to get a formal handbook set up. Does anyone have a good resource for a template? [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have any experience with jewelstreet.com for marketing? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:26 PM PST I received a phone call from a representative at jewelstreet.com to market my topical products. They offer multiple different types of advertising and claim to work with hundreds of small business worldwide. We already do plenty of business through etsy and don't want to pay for an unnecessary MLM scammy thing. Any info is much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Best software/programs for maintaining customer data and automatic reminders for scheduling? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:18 PM PST I am currently doing everything manually for my small business. I am trying to find something that will help me maintain client contact information and job history and also remind me when clients are coming due for service (6 month, 12 month service, etc.). Anybody have any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Is it ok to struggle with debt while growing? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:51 PM PST I own a cleaning business. This year has been tremendous in terms of growth. I've financed two cars and a cargo van with equipment. Both cars are needed to workers to get to and from jobs. Floor care van isn't as busy as I would hope it would be. Since it's slowing down and I've invested all my savings into buying dry cleaners, other equipment, upgrades etc, I don't have savings and it's worries me some. I hate being in debt and hate carrying balance on my credit cards. In your opinion, is debt necessary for growth and should I just tough it out? One of the ideas is sell of of the vehicles and downsize, but it will bring revenue down. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:48 PM PST Many questions for all- any input and discussion is much appreciated: In terms of building business credit- I have read that using CC's properly are the quickest and easiest way. Can purchasing from a supplier (who reports trade lines to the bureaus) that allows net30/60 terms and paying the invoice with a CC expedite the process, "double-dip" so to speak? What business credit card(s) do you use for your company? How many CC's does your business have? When applying for a CC it takes X number of days for that credit request to show up on reports - so theoretically I could apply for 5 CC's today and it would show up as only 1 line on my report. Like shopping for a mortgage lender for example. Is there an order in which to apply for CC's? Like if AMEX reports quicker than Visa, apply for Visa first so both inquiries hit the report together as only 1 inquiry. Which company will provide the highest credit line, to start? Is it better to have an AMEX card with a lower credit line vs. a lower tier card with a higher credit-line? Do all CC companies report all lines to credit bureaus? I am hesitant to sign up for a business credit card because well, they are going to be on record for the life of business, and I do not want to choose the "wrong" one, or several. I understand that businesses will have specific needs and choosing a "points" over a "cash back"or, intro low APR card is dependent, however I want all of them. And why not? Obviously I want my business to have higher purchasing power and CC freebies are a bonus. Thank you for reading, looking forward to hearing yalls ideas. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:25 PM PST Hi everyone. So since Covid my business has boomed. I am having trouble like a lot of businesses hiring employees and keeping them during these strange times. I know not everyone is having this problem and this post really is not about that. At this point in time I feel my best option is to hire an assistant. Some one who can help me not drown every day but is not just a regular hourly employee either. Has anybody else hired an assistant and how did it go? What should I describe in the job title? How much should I pay? And I do not want to use Zip Recruiter again either because last time they made it super difficult to cancel my subscription. Thanks in advance.
