Figma started as a drone company… and is now a design tool worth $10+ billion

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 05:21 AM PST

The process of building a startup is never straightforward, and that was especially true for Figma.

The company's co-founder Dylan Field originally dropped out of college to build a Drone company. He and his co-founder would change directions because they "couldn't come up with a drone idea that didn't hurt people or violate their privacy."

They decided to build "Photoshop in the browser," based on a prototype Dylan's co-founder Evan Wallace had built in the past. But photoshop has tons of use cases, so the company lacked focus for a while.

When Dylan was raising a seed investment for the company, a well-known investor passed and told him, "I just don't think you know what you're doing yet."

Dylan killed off many of the features the company had built (animation, paint, photo editing) and got the team to focus on interface design.

The team picked up momentum and went on to raise money from the investor who originally passed.

The early days of Figma were challenging, but like Dylan says, "life is pretty good if you're building things you find interesting. Keep building and exploring. You may end up in a place you never expected."

How much has your startup idea changed from where you originally started?

Interesting articles and videos about the company's early days:

Quitting a high salary job to start a business?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 03:43 PM PST

This is a very common theme I've seen, but I wanted to use this thread to collect stories and advice.

I'm a mid 20s engineer, making 6 figures and don't have any debt. The job I'm in is not my passion at all, and at one point I came close to quitting because of the stress, but thankfully do to job role changes and moving up in my field, I'm still pursuing this path for now.

I also want to get married, buy a house, and have kids. Usually having kids is not something necessarily planned for, but I want to make sure I can afford to send them to school. My partner also makes 6 figures as an engineer and they would support my choices. I have a lot of questions in mind as to how to start and when to start. I have a strong feeling my business will be successful, but I can only know for sure if I try.

I wanted to see if anyone has ever been in a similar situation and either started and failed, started and succeeded, or didn't start at all!

If money was not an issue, what franchise would you open?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 02:30 AM PST

I know it's a pretty broad question, as there are so many variables such as supply/demand/location, but what franchise would you open up?

Creating a coworking space for multipassionate people

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 07:02 AM PST

I've created a discord server for people like me (multipassionate) to hang out, work alongside each other, find accountability buddies and grow faster at the end of the day.

What would you suggest I add?

    What to do with this?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 04:17 PM PST

Hey guys, I had started a friendship app back in August that had amassed over 200 users but due to work and other things, I wasn't able to dedicate enough attention to it. The users are college students, and the app and website are still there. Is there anything I can do to get value from this? Is this something someone would buy off of me (website, app, and 200+ user info like emails and hobbies/interests).

    Thanks.

What outcome IS the MOST / BEST possible outcome from a cold email that you’ve heard of?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 03:41 PM PST

    Excluding scams of course.

    For example,

Someone has cold emailed someone their CV and got a job.

    Or

Someone has cold emailed someone and pitched a business idea that got funding

Do you have any real examples?

Making ideas a reality? (Design and manufacture, and investment)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 06:02 AM PST

Hey guys, I have a few ideas floating around in my head and I've reached a point now where I have been sitting on them for so long that I might like to test a few out (Market research at least), and maybe prototype/product test, then push on with any that look good.

There isn't really a theme to these ideas. I don't consider any of them to be "my big ticket" (besides one or two of the apps), and I'm not "attached" to them or hoping to turn them into the basis for something huge in that field. But I do think that any one of them (or a few combined) could make me a tiny millionaire, but almost certainly not a Billionaire. :)

The thing is, I could design these on paper, explain them in detail, and oversee development but I lack the expertise to do any technical drawings, renders, manufacturing or coding.

And whilst I could probably take any one of these on as a "business" and I'd take the reigns at first, if it grew to more than one two products... I think there's probably people more qualified than me to be the CEO of this hypothetical company.

So, can anyone recommend any books, websites or other resources to teach me a bit about what to do next?

    I need to learn:
    - How to design the thing, or find people to help with that so that it could actually be made.

    - How to find the right developers (apps) or manufacturers to make the thing.

    - How to go about product testing and Quality Control, and distribution.

    - How to find investors/partners.

    - Potentially, how to find people smarter than me to run the thing.

    - And maybe how to approach existing companies with my ideas to see if we could work together or if they'd buy it etc. (Like if I invented a new type of wheel, maybe I don't try and start a whole thing… maybe I go speak to some tyre companies…)

I did have a few more specific questions, but I might save them for after I've done a bit more reading. :) But if anyone feels like briefly giving their thoughts on those areas, that'd be cool.

    Thanks all. :)

How did you come up with your most creative idea?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 03:02 AM PST

My most creative ideas come when I'm sitting or while in front of a keyboard trying to figure out how something is done. I believe ideas solve problems. I would love to hear some ideas from you all as well.

    Tired of the rat race

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 10:12 AM PST

I want to put this question out here, I hope it's the right place.

The rat race is insane, I'm not cut out for this. I'm female, in my mid-twenties, went to college for business administration (big mistake) and now stuck at data entry jobs. These jobs help make ends meet. But it's hard for me to hold down a job long term because the workforce sucks the life out of me.

I've always fantasize about working for myself, but I'm not cut out for that life either. I'm not a go getter and my energy easily gets spent. My immune system and mental health easily gets affected by hustling; overall my general health sucks to keep up the grind in both the rat race and entrepreneurship.

A few passions I have: taking care of animals, learning languages, playing musical instruments, nature, history and research. Maybe I should go back to school?

My question is: if I can't handle the rat race and entrepreneurship, what alternative is there? Im not going to up and quit my job, I have obligations I obviously need to fulfill. Im just curious to know what other options there are out there.

    Thanks is advance!!

Internship options for those of us who didn’t follow the straight forward route

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 12:39 PM PST

I've read quite a few stories from entrepreneurs that go something like this: go to college (or drop out partway through), get a quality internship that facilitates great learning and connection opportunities, start a business and become an entrepreneur. Great blue print if you're 18, but what do the rest of us do?

For me, I went to college not knowing what I wanted to do and received an undergrad degree in a field I haven't worked in since. Then I went to grad school and got a masters degree in a field that interested me at the time, but again, I haven't worked in since. Now, at the age of 34, I've realized I want to be an entrepreneur and start companies, but am lacking in those learning and connection opportunities that seam to abound from these internships I've read about that seem geared towards your younger, just out of college type individual.

What's the best way to change course at this time in life and become an entrepreneur that provides those learning and connection opportunities?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 12:01 PM PST

I am currently talking to major manufacture for the purchase of their product (From South Korea). They are going to use FOB shipping and I wanted to know what part I will be reliable for after the goods have been delivered to the designated port? Do I pay the tariffs, taxes too? Also if I hire freight carrier whether through FedEx or 3rd party, they pick up and deliver and do all the necessary stuff?

I’m thinking about being a day of wedding coordinator as a side hustle. What are some pros and cons before I continue?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:08 AM PST

I know a friend who is a wedding planner and I am pretty confident I could be a day of coordinator. Day of coordinating is like having a wedding planner for just the wedding day. They make sure all of the vendors show up on time and that everyone is following the rules that the venue has set. They are also a way to relive stress from the bride and groom and allow the family to enjoy themselves.

Do you think that this is a good sidehustle while I try to build my other business? What are some pros and cons of doing this that I am not thinking of?

How do you motivate your Remote team?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:24 AM PST

    Context/Background:

I am a Virtual Assistant, I am very versatile. Got into this company I am now, like 2 years ago. Was a Wordpress Editor, and began noticing their writers sometimes where good sometimes were shit. So I began analyzing that on my free time, and devised a system to qualify them. (I was not a manager for writers, just editor). The system worked for me, as I could work on the good writers articles, and be more productive. I started refusing to work on the shitty writers articles, and my manager talked to me and I confesed my qualification system. Manager was interested, and soon I was the one giving the go-ahead for a hiring in writers. This was also a way to fire bad writers I ddint want to work from. This was at 7USD/Hour.

Payment delays, and I resigned the position.

Got hired at another company, as a VA with various jobs, between them I got into a hire position to find developers. 20USD/Hour. I just posted on linkedin, indeed, reddit, interviewed devs, and gave my insight to my boss. He hired or not. And I got 100 interviews per week, from where we hired some.

Covid came, and I was let go since the company didnt have funding to keep me.

First company contacted me back. I wanted nothing to do with them, but hey, mid-covid and no one was hiring. I took a job back. 7USD.. But now I got the promise of being a Manager. A role I never did before. I was Managing both Writers and Editors. And made a system using asana and hubstaff to keep all working nice. Productivity went trought he roof. We went from 5 to 10 writers, to 50 writers. We were outputting 500 articles published per week. Bad accounting got us to stop, as we were spending too much cash on it. I had to fire tons of people, but kept the budget in control. This left me with little to do in the company, and my boss moved me to another company he owns. A Merchadise B2B company. So I went. I dont know anything about Merchandise. So first I moved some workers from Clockify to Hubstaff. Found slackers and fired them. Hired new team and they are working fine.

    Got payments increases to 14USD.

The workflows dont exist, the onboarding doesnt exist. I am constantly trying to fix the current fire. Finding more workers, more leads. I got to learn to do Lead Gen, Manage FB campaings, Manage Customer Support teams.

And I had to do high-stress decisions. One decision after another, that could break the company or make it survive. The stress was too high. Sometimes I took one decision and couldnt work more for the day. Thus reducing my payment.

Also, my boss cant handle stress at all and has hate-yells constantly. First I feared them. Now I am at a moment when he does and I just ignore him.

There is also constant payment delays, as the budget is not there. I learned to live with them.

I am learning a ton, as being kind of a CEO is an adventure on its own. but I am making less money than if I found another job. This past month I did not worked at all. I had to make the hardest decision ever, and my boss didnt even notice the decision I did. or the consecuences. Anyway, the month went by with me having terror to go back to work. So, no payment. Boss noticed me gone after 2 weeks, and reached out via another way, and talked with me. I explained my streess levels and told him Ill be back when I can.

I got back this week. And I work like 1 to 2 hours. and abandon ship. I dont even know what to do. When before I was doing 10/20 tasks simultaneously.

How do I get back on track? How would you motivate a worker remotely?

I am also having the same issue in all the company levels. People flop too soon. and more importantly, how do I get my efficiency/productivity back?

No jobs Stateside because companies can't verify international work. 27m and I need to go down my own path.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 10:37 AM PST

I come from a place where the accepted idea, as it were, was that jobs only pay well after you get an MBA/Masters degree. Well my parents paid for my tuition in the states and after also getting me married off, stopped me from working for the sake of "gaining a better education". In the meantime I worked with some companies in my country as a liaison of sorts, but getting paid was a hassle and it just doesn't work as well anymore.

I have some money saved up and I need to use this to survive and feed my family. I haven't really considered options yet. The only thing is that I'm located near NYC, if that helps in figuring out what my business options are. I'm terrible at this talent of just coming up with ideas, so your help will be invaluable.

New immersive 8D sound reality app - We need your feedback

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 10:37 AM PST

I and my team are planning to launch a mobile app (iOS, Android) for mindfulness and relaxation.
We spent almost a year preparing it and really hope that people will love it. Some of our very first users already do :)
This app is for people who want to:
    - refresh the brain and stay focused
    - travel by their imagination
    - start a meditation practice
    - relax and enjoy
    - feel happier :)
We're using 8D sound (360 degrees sound), ASMR, natural sounds, incredibly beautiful music, and other special effects that make this experience really immersive!
Our app supports 2 languages: English and Russian. I live in LA and know many people, but most of them are Russian-speaking.
So we have many reviews from Russian-speaking people, who already tried our product and fell in love with it!
But we don't have enough English-speaking people who can give their feedback.
    How you can help:
    - Try the app
    - Give us feedback about it
    - Record a short video review - 15-30 seconds (only if you want). This video will be used as a review for our landing page
    - Share our app with people when we launch. If you are a professional marketer, we have something to discuss
    What is for you:
    - Be one of the first people who tried this product
    - Try it for free
    - You will have an INCREDIBLY interesting experience, I promise!
    - You will help us. Who knows, maybe one day we will have a chance to help you :)
    - New sound reality is waiting for you!
Please, send me a direct message if it is interesting for you. Thanks!

I don't know what to do ! Been approached by a type of customer I didn't thought of !

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 02:13 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm working on a project for a few months now. I've do the market research, some user forms, I've make severals prototype to find what users wanted, I've developed an MVP that is currently being beta-beta-tested by a very few users (to find the more blocking bugs for users).

I planed to upgrade a bit the MVP (so the user experience isn't a pain) before releasing it in a wider beta-test (like 25/30 beta-testers).

Just so you know : my target niche is a small niche, that's why I'm not talking about 400 beta-testers.

My problem now, or the thing that is blocking me, is that I've been approached by a potential customer, but not the one I thought about.

My solution is aimed to be B2C, and I've been approached by an entity that would push my solution to be B2B2C.

[I'm building a SaaS platform to help farmers manage their investments]

What should I do ? Or, what would you do ?

    1. Focus on the beta-test with real users, that will be real customers
    2. Focus on the B2B2C customer

For now, I've just been approach by someone that told me "They working on this kind of problem, they really need a solution like the one you're building, they're ready to pay, I can organise a call with the CEO".

This is my first experience building a startup, and this is my first experience with a potential costumer (I'm a tech dude).

    Thanks for the help

Deciding whether to sell and go back to work?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:44 AM PST

I've been in an industry my entire career. I went out on my own 6 years ago and have been working from home ever since. I've been really really happy in this time, but I never made crazy profits, closer to about what I was making before. My biggest constraint is capital. In this timeframe the industry is changing and my profits are starting to decline. I have an opportunity to sell to a startup competitor. The offer is good, and the job offer is good, I would get a small equity stake in the new company. And still get to work from home. But I need to convince myself to let go of my company. I could never build it back up. I have credit lines right now that I wouldn't get back. Financially it makes a ton of sense to sell but I was miserable before and am afraid I'll be miserable again. Anyone been in my shoes before?
