I have an opportunity to inherit the family business and am fucking terrified

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 05:10 PM PDT

The business is an established appliance repair place, being local in the area since 1972, starting from nothing but a type writer and a truck. It's been with my aunt, bought from my grandfather for $50,000. That Same price was offered to me. The business brings in a net profit of about $300k a year. Even with covid, the little business has such deep roots in the area, they've survived perfectly fine. It is an exclusive repair shop for whirlpool products. Everything is already going, I just gotta keep it going. Any tips?

How to contact online store owners?

Boss wants to sell me his business/ my workplace - Zero knowledge on business

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 04:52 PM PDT

I work at a small printing company just outside a large city.

I've worked there for 7 years, first as a designer and within the last couple years as an account manager.

My boss is looking to cut back on hours and at some point retire (4-6 years?)... and is hoping I will take over his role first as the manager and then buy him out and become the owner.

I know literally nothing about business, running one, and especially owning one, but he wants me to think about it/decide now and if it's something I want to do, then we'll start going down that path now.

With complete lack of knowledge about what goes into it and what kinds of things I should be thinking about, it's kind of hard for me to decide one way or another. I don't know if it's something I even want to do, I mean I'm not in love with my job at the moment, but perhaps it's different if you own it...?

Just hoping to maybe get some insight from other owners, especially small business owners. I honestly don't even really know what questions to ask. I mean I guess the first part - I don't even know how do you buy a business? Does he come up with a number of what the business is "worth" and then I get a loan to pay him? Any other help or thoughts are appreciated!

How’s the state of finance and jobs in finance? Is there a future?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:02 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub but I'm leaning toward finance as a degree and I'm wondering if anyone here works in it and could share their experience in the industry. Pros, cons, if you could go back, etc.

[Question] How do big companies start?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 03:39 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm a young 17-year-old teenager from Sweden that wants to do business in the future and own my own corporation. I'm currently trying to learn as much as I can about it, and there's something I'd like to learn more about.

If we look at big companies today like Blackrock, Amazon, TESLA, or Saudi Aramco we see that they're very successful and they are large industrial distributors around the world. Of course, you may ask "Why don't you research yourself about how companies start?", I get that. But I'd like to get an overall view of it.

So, my question is, all these big companies today, how did they start? How did they begin? How were they able to fund themselves in the beginning and how did they go from a small business start-up to the world's largest mega-corporations?

If you have any knowledge you'd like to share with me, feel free. I'd love to learn more about this.

I'm considering getting a degree in Business and Economics...

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 11:29 AM PDT

I'm currently 17 years old and have always been interested in the inner workings of running a business, even starting one or two myself!

I'm considering getting my bachelors degree in business and economics. I live in Vienna, so the WU would be the obvious choice for me.

I was wondering if someone who has experience in the field would check out their curriculum and see if it teaches valuable skills that employers seek: https://www.wu.ac.at/en/programs/bachelors-programs/business-and-economics/structure-content

Thank you for any feedback! :)

    Franchise vs Self-made

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:37 AM PDT

Hi all. My wife and I are looking to start a business with some money we've saved up. We're currently split between a poke franchise or creating one from scratch. It looks like it would be more affordable to start from scratch and give us more control but at the same time the franchise would increase odds of success and provide resources and knowledge that we would otherwise have to curate. There aren't any poke franchises that are well known in the area we're looking to start so name recognition probably isn't worth that much.

My wife has food industry experience but not in poke specifically. Where do you start when you're trying to make your own place? Do restaurants that aren't in the competing area respond well if we would ask them to train us/give advice for a fee? Has anyone here had to make this decision before? Any insights that might help us decide would be appreciated, thanks!

What does it mean to “clean up on Wall Street”?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 10:19 AM PDT

Why should I even really want to make a business to make more money?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 01:45 PM PDT

TLDR: Idealism would take me nowhere. I need to pragmatically understand and accept the game as it is now, and to beat it, and be game changer

    ------

Been listening to a talk on fashion and fragrance.

Trying to understand rich business people

and figure out how to catch their hearts

To help my cause for street kids

    I love fashion and perfume.

A part of me wants to enjoy the material world like any woman.

Yet i can only do it in the virtual world of gaming

And as I listen to these women who have these luxuries of branded things

I'm close to crying... in jealousy and bewilderment...

    Jealousy not for myself

I am jealous for the children who live on garbage,

in tattered clothes and drenched in the smell of the rottenness of consumerism

I'm bewildered how can those people enjoy millions worth of scents and clothing

I'd feel so guilty even if I'd be able to afford it

And so why I cannot manifest riches, nor a business for becoming rich, nor having a rich partner

Like I do not want it, even if I do

I would not be able to enjoy it

I'd feel bad just at the thought of imagining having so much money and luxury

And yet, I know that if I'd be in that place,

I'd be so lured and drenched in enjoyment and

    maybe forget my cause

I don't know if it's just for how teledramas in my country

Often have the same plot of the rich antagonist oppressing the poor protagonist

But also, my great granma was from a well known family, a very rich lineage

She ranaway from home and turned her back on her heritage

I feel like I carry a bit of her spirit

Of that distaste towards rich people and the rich life of her own family

Nevertheless, my grandfather was a self made rich man

From being a shoe shine boy to doing business of luxury cars

He drove me to school riding a different car each day

And yet I've seen how fleeting wealth goes away

Why should I really even bother about the typical human dream

Of having money for buying this and that

And experiencing and enjoying this and that

    What's the point

Or what's even the joy in that

While the rest of the world is in suffering

Primarily for how the resources and wealth that should be theirs

Are bought by middle men at a very low price

    and sold higher and higher

The capitalist business world is so money driven, where just those on top wins

Often times, I find it sick

To the point I can't even desire enough to play the game

And yet, I understand idealism would take me nowhere

I need to pragmatically understand and accept the game as it is now

    And to beat it

    And be game changer

Business College Student - How Does Revenue Forecasting Work?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 04:39 AM PDT

There is an example in my lecture video with the table.

    Year 2019 2020 2021 2022 (Projected) 2023 (Projected) 2024 (Projected)
    Revenue ($) 177,203 188,618 208,366 229,203 252,123 277,335

I learned about year over year growth, where

year over year growth (%) = Value in year X + 1/Value in year X

    2019 to 2020 year over year growth is ( (188,618/177,203) - 1 ) * 100 = 6.44%

    2020 to 2021 year over year growth is ( (208,366/188,618) - 1 ) * 100 = 10.4%

So how are values for 2022, 2023, 2024 predicted?

Perhaps I thought you take the average (mean) of the historical growth rate 6.44% and 10.4%, but found that it is not it as the year over year growth from 2021 to 2022 is 10.0%.

I'm mystified how revenue forecasting work.

    Books or articles resources appreciated.
