Challenge : build your NEW startup in 48 hours. This next weekend. You can join us

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:40 AM PDT

TLDR: Next weekend we make a remote event for entrepreneurs to build a startup from scratch in 48h !

PS: This is free of course. I will be building as well. You can come with friends & have a team too! 😉

    Do you fear launching?

I do. I spent months building "perfect products", some I ended up never launching..

Then I saw "Game Jams" & people creating video games in 48 hours.

    I know the feeling from 7 start-up weekends/hackathons:

    • the excitement of starting new things
    • the rush to complete them
    • the satisfaction from achieving it & showing it

Nothing comes close in terms of training you to build, exposing your work & having feedback on it!

So: Who's up for a "Startup rush" of 48 hours the next weekend? 😃

    3 rules:

    • Make a working online product/app
    • That accept payments
    • Show it to others at the end

    That s it 😄

    How to build so fast?

    • Get in with us! The social element definitely helps 😉
    • Accept the challenge willingly! Do it for yourself & for the experience
    • Strip the non-essential. And use tools, low/no-code, bootstrapping

Launch call: Friday 2nd July at 6 pm CEST. End call: Sunday 4th July at 6 pm CEST.

Suggestion: This week, note problems you faced. Solving a problem you lived through is way easier than solving someone else's problem, especially in 48 hours

SO: Are you willing to accept the challenge? 😏 Just put it the comments & I'll message you. Cheers!

    Guide to LinkedIn: Personal Branding

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:20 AM PDT

On LinkedIn, there are over 600 million professionals. You must pay special attention to the creation of your profile if you want to stand out.

In this guide, I am going to talk about how I branded my personal LinkedIn profile, the same was applied to my company page as well. I own a small full-service agency that got some clients through LinkedIn. You can replicate this if you want the same results. Let's start!

    Name

Include your first and last name, No nicknames. No "rockstar" or "hero". On the LinkedIn mobile app, you can use the audio feature to record your name. I go one step further and give a one-line elevator pitch, As most of the people who stumble upon your profile will most likely click on it.

    URL

Get a friendly URL for your personal page and company page. Ditch the default URL as the friendly one is easier to share, and looks way more professional.

    Banner Photo

Don't leave it on default, Use a banner image that reflects you or your brand. Head over to Canva and design one for yourself @ 1400 * 425px or hire someone to do it for you.

    Profile photo

One of the most important aspects of a LinkedIn profile. Choose one that resonates with you, It should be a headshot, preferably a blurred-out background. Hire a professional photographer(expensive, but well worth it) or use some services like this or this to get professional work done.

    Headline

This is the second most important aspect of your profile! Be succinct, innovative, and include essential terms that help others understand your business and job within it.

Add all other details in location, school(if any) at the top. Get at least 300+ connections. I'd go for 500+ tho. Be strategic in making connections, Only add those who are somewhat related to your business. Don't go on a connection request spree, however, LinkedIn has now imposed a 100/week connection requests cap.

    Summary

Use industry-specific terms in your LinkedIn profile to make it more search-friendly, since this will help you appear higher in LinkedIn searches.

    Include

    • A small intro to who you are
    • Your skills, expertise, and some projects
    • Any achievement
    • And some of your valuable services/products
    • Use bullet points if you can!

In a way use this as a portfolio of your greatest work to demonstrate that you have the expertise you claim.

    Experience

This is the third most important aspect of your profile. This is the only part of your LinkedIn profile your potential clients will care about. The previous ones were about first-impressions, this one is about pure skills.

Include all of the organizations and businesses for which you have worked. Another crucial aspect to add is information about your duties, accomplishments, and development.

People don't care about what you can do nowadays, they rather want to know what you have done.

Also, this is a good place to include a little more about your company/brand and what makes them unique. Use bullet points to make them easy to read.

    Words to Avoid

    • Specialize
    • Experienced
    • Skilled
    • Leadership
    • Passionate
    • Expert
    • Motivated
    • Creative
    • Strategic
    • Focused

    Education

Specify your highest educational outcomes. This will make it easier for you to locate persons with whom you have previously studied, as well as give an opportunity to amaze passers-by.

You can also mention activities that you took part in while in school or at university. Use bullet points for this one as well.

    Licenses & certifications

Mention your Licenses & certifications if any. Don't put random certificates. You can also include some of the things that you have learned in the description.

    Volunteer experience

No one gives a damn about this if you own a business, if you are looking for a job then yes go optimize this. Your character and beliefs should be reflected in your LinkedIn profile, volunteering allows you to exhibit your compassion and dedication outside of the job to the recruiters.

    Skills & Endorsements

As essential as references are skills and endorsements. You're not just optimizing for those keywords when you add your talents and knowledge to your LinkedIn profile; you're also establishing possibilities for endorsements.

    • Add at least ten skills related to your business.
    • Pin your top 3 skills.
    • Ask for some endorsements from your friends, family, or employees for an initial boost.

    Recommendations

Having LinkedIn recommendations attracts attention and indicates that you possess significant qualities.

If you have a good working connection with a customer or a coworker, ask them to suggest you on LinkedIn, and vice versa.

If you did something great for your client, don't be afraid to ask them. Ask politely for a recommendation, they won't say no trust me. Think of recommendations as word-of-mouth marketing in real life.

    Accomplishments

This is self-explanatory. I don't have any on my profile, I don't think they are that relevant.

Why is LinkedIn Profile Optimization Important?

    • Users with complete profiles are 50 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn.
    • The main reason to complete your profile is to ensure that you will appear in LinkedIn search results and sometimes even google search results!
    • Only 51% of LinkedIn users have 100% completed profiles. Think of 2021 LinkedIn as 2012 Google. My fellow SEOs might have got a clue now ;)

That was a pretty long post, sorry guys. My initial plan was 3x-5x than this, I decided to cut it short haha. Let me know if this was helpful, I will write about outreaching on LinkedIn next.

Two companies, Blue Acorn and Womply, saw a need (big banks not processing small PPP loans), filled it, and stand to collect more than $3 billion in fees

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:38 AM PDT

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/27/business/ppp-relief-loans-blueacorn-womply.html

"One of the companies, Blueacorn, didn't exist before the pandemic. The other, Womply, founded a decade ago, sold marketing software. But this year, they became the breakout stars of the Paycheck Protection Program, the government's $800 billion relief effort for small businesses. Between them, the two companies processed a third of all P.P.P. loans made this year, the Times analysis found.

Blueacorn and Womply aren't banks, so they couldn't actually lend any money. Rather, they acted as middlemen, charging into a gap between what big banks wouldn't do and what small banks couldn't do. First, they unleashed marketing blitzes encouraging freelancers, gig workers, sole proprietors and other small merchants to apply for loans through their websites. Next, they directed those applications to lenders. In return, they took a hefty cut of the fees that lenders made on each loan."

I have raised $8M for my previous startup. And that's because I was a salesman.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:45 AM PDT

I think that founders who are trying to raise and have limited VC network are missing the point.

They take those generic fundraising courses that teach everything about the VC world, and not much about business development and sales.

But let me explain first who I am and the reason behind this thought.

After a few years spent in corporate (Google, Microsoft) I decided 8 years ago that startups are where I belong.

I initially started as a Head of Sales for an IPOed Canadian eLearning startup, then moved into the C-Suite for another soon-to-be-IPO Middle Eastern startup.

During my 2 years tenure as a Chief Revenue Officer (acting CEO, really), I have raised $8M in 1.5 years.

We were 20 people when I joined, surviving badly with a $500k seed. That is when I decided to raise: $4M first, and another $4M a year later.

We eventually became a $100M company and built the "Square" of the Middle East.

The process of fundraising wasn't a walk in the park, but it was not as difficult as I expected.

One of the most underestimated skill by founders who fundraise is "Sales".

    And copywriting.

My sales background helped me big time. And it made me realize that you don't need to be a former PWC Auditor or a Senior Financial Controller at EY to ace fundraising.

The dynamics of generating investor meetings from scratch recalled my early days as a business developer (basically a cold caller).

Lots of Sales Linkedin Navigator, lots of emails bought and a lot of cold outreach.

The email pitch needs to be on point and you will need superior copywriting and lead research skills.

Don't send the exact same email to 100 VCs (I did that at first). Send 10, but highly targeted and customized.

It takes time, but your response rate goes to the roof.

Then it's all about managing your pipeline, training for your pitch to then finally mastering negotiations.

If you guys are thinking of dipping your toes into the world of VC-backed startups, happy to help. Just DM me and I'll share what I know.

Shameless plug: after quitting my last startup I have built Funden AI to help startup founders find and contact their ideal investor. Basic plan is free.

dumb question but.. Why would you raise money?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:21 PM PDT

If my company is having solid profits, means I have money right? Why would I dilute my future profits (forever) in exchange of some cash now? Even a bank loan would be better? Is there any good article or book I should now about this?

EDIT: thank you all for thoughtful replies.

Do you worry about your age?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:06 AM PDT

When starting on this journey did you worry about your age? Media nowadays suggests that if you're not a millionaire by 30 you are shit. Do you worry about how many years you will need to put in your business and at the end it might never take off? Does this thought consume you?

    Start along with 9-5

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I believe that I should not leave my 9-5 until any of my side hustle gets some decent traction. Salary is my only income currently.

But as you know that 9-5 companies have agreement contracts which says anything I invent during the time with them will be rightfully theirs. It's clearly written in my contract that i should not indulge in any other business or opportunities.

How did you guys overcome this? I really need some advice on how should I move forward with this.

    Thank you reading.

What digital automations are missing from your workflow that would make life easier?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:16 AM PDT

I'm a full stack engineer looking for a pet project to hack away at. I'm not looking to pair up with anyone, but would love to get a sense of pain points others run into that maybe I can solve. Or at least be a puzzle I attempt to tackle and make easier.

Some broad thoughts/ideas I've been kicking around:

    - Where do "influencers" get stuck promoting themselves? How could that be more seamless. Instagram and Pinterest can talk to each other already, but what apps can't?

    - What two apps, if they could communication seamlessly together, would streamline someone's day?

    - Is there an activity someone does repeatedly that could better handled by a simple cron job with a nice UI?

    - Do you need to routinely broadcast a message out to reddit? Twitch / OnlyFans / other broadcasting platforms to reminder viewership that you're online?

Few years worked for the FBI with R&D dept., now going to sell the device to the general public

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:56 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

few years ago my company was hired to develop a device that can be a healthy replacement for Energy drinks, because some agencies had to deal with covering giant healthcare bills related to abusing this type of substances.

We came up with a wristwatch-alike device that increases natural level of noradrenaline (winner hormone) and perfectly helps tired people to stay awake and concentrated, check is ~$90.

Now it works for thousands of users and they're happy.

Long story short: we split our ways with my partner (he went to IT), now I have all the rights, but a bit short of cash.

So looking for a partner who can bring 100-150k for marketing. The margin is big, with this we can get >$1M revenue in Q1. Have all the docs to sell the device in the US and EU.

One of my colleagues who worked for Red Bull sales team, developed for us an awesome marketing concept, so we know how to get it done.

Can offer fast repayment + equity option.

New York City, can provide a live demo in Manhattan.

Books on Leadership at Tech orgs

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:57 AM PDT

    Hi Folks,

I am looking for great books on leadership at tech organizations.

Specifically I am interested in books written by the actual practitioners and leaders. I like learning from the perspective you get from the "trenches". I don't prefer books written by observers and journalists about a company. (Although I realize some books are written by or with the help of ghost writers).

Here's a list of books that I am working through right now. What else would you recommend or add to it?

    Where to begin?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT

    Hi everyone -

I'm looking for basic information and advice on where to begin this process.

What I have now is a basic and widely applicable need for an information website and a plan to monetize it. I also have an absolute ton of raw and useful data to make this happen.

What I don't have is a clue where to start.

Trademark/service mark for idea protection? Founding of the actual company (LLC?)?

How do I even begin to bring my mental vision into reality?

7 Apps I use to be more productive as an entrepreneur.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:42 PM PDT

    Hey👋

I've been using apps to boost my productivity for a while. For the past 3 years to be exact. This is the reason I've decided to share the ones that have broken into my daily routine and that will probably help you too. I know there are millions of apps that are supposed to increase your productivity and to be honest, I've tried a lot of them. After filtering if this app is useful enough, I have come to the 7 apps I cannot live without. I hope this saves you some time from researching everything!

    7. Slack

It's not what you think! It's actually not. I don't use Slack to communicate with anyone. I am in some groups but that's not the point. The point is that I use Slack to take quick notes. How? I make up new channels for each one of my projects and whenever I want to remember something related to a project I send it as a message. You're probably wondering, why don't you use some kind of fancy note-taking app, like Roam or Drafts. That's because I find most note-taking apps cluttered, and not to the point, and others very simple for my liking.

    6. Forest

This one is pretty obvious. I think. Pomodoro is one of the few scientifically proven methods to be more productive. For those not familiar with Forest, it is basically a fancy timer. You can set a work timer and a break timer. I usually do 40 minutes of work with 5 minutes of break. This can help you feel like you have something to anticipate. You can say to yourself "It's just 24 more minutes of work. That's not that much" and continue to be productive.

    5. Newsify

Next on the list is Newsify. You may not know what Newsify is, so let me explain. Newsify is an RSS reader, it basically gathers all the articles and blog posts from people you follow and displays them to you. This helps me keep up with the blogs that I want to follow, without having to look up every single one. I used to use Feedly, but I prefer the interface of Newsify 100x times more.

    4. Mist

In short, Mist is a Chrome Extension that offers guided meditations, relaxing music, and sounds of nature. Practicing mindfulness can improve the ability to focus, relieve stress, boost your mood and ultimately make the company's staff more productive. However, most people forget or don't have enough time to do this daily. That's where Mist comes in. It integrates directly with Google Chrome so that it's always on the search bar.

    3. Asana

Asana is my one-stop project manager. I use it to do everything from tracking progress on projects to writing down deadlines. I discovered this software about 3 months ago and it has really changed y workflow. You can organize your projects in a calendar or tasks view, but I personally use the calendar for almost everything. It is very easy to plan out what you have to do on a day-to-day basis for every project.

    2. Superhuman

Superhuman is one of those apps where you don't think it's that useful at first, but you can't live without it. Simply, it is a fancy email app. They claim to help you get through your emails in 2x the time, and I find that to be true. They also helped me declutter and organize my inbox which is a big thing if you take into account my 21.000 unread emails. Yes. 21.000. After all that, I am proud to announce that I've hit the fabled Inbox Zero.

    1. Notion

Have you ever googled anything related to productivity? Then you have probably come across Notion. Notion is an amazing note-taking app in which you can organize… your whole life. I use Notion to keep track of my Reading List. I write down every book I get recommended and when I have time, I listen to them on Audible. I also have my goals and weird trips I want to do in there. If I listed everything, this article would be a book, so let's move on. You can use the app in every way you like, as it's super customizable.

    Thanks for your time!

You can find more like this on my Twitter.

Is launching on BetaList worth it in 2021? *Transparent numbers*

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:53 AM PDT

A couple of weeks back, I asked around for insights on what to expect from launching on BetaList in 2021, and thought that sharing our results for others thinking of doing the same would be helpful, so here we go.

We made the free submission on BetaList for Flowrite a couple of months ago, and it took 1,5 months before we were finally featured on the first Saturday of June.

    Results on the launch day

    54 website visitors
    16 signups

I guess the fact it was the weekend affected the results somewhat. Also, it caught us with surprise, so we didn't do any promotion on the actual launch day aside from social posts across our channels. Although, I doubt more promotion from us would have made much of a difference. However, I was left wondering why we never made it to the trending section even though the number of likes we received would have justified it?

Results 14 days from the launch day

    216 website visitors
    76 signups

After the launch day, the referral traffic from BetaList has flowed in slow and steady. It has created a nice long tail of signups considering the launch day results, but still, the overall results are very modest.

Is it worth it to launch on BetaList 2021?

Based on our own results and what I've learned from others that have shared theirs transparently, I'd say that it's definitely not worth it to go for the paid option to skip the waiting queue. Even though you would be in a rush to launch, the traction you'll get is not worth the price tag. Even if you submit your startup without paying for it, I wouldn't hold my breath but instead focus on other channels such as Product Hunt, Hacker News, and Indie Hackers.

That being said, there's nothing to lose by launching on BetaList, except the time you spent on creating your submission. One particular upside is that you'll earn a new do-follow link that can help you with SEO. Of course, it's also something new and exciting to share with your audience if you've already started to build one.

If you have any questions around launching on BetaList I'm more than happy to answer them.
