Would you recommend getting an MBA, if so what concentration? If not, why? Posted: 02 May 2021 05:55 AM PDT I'm an engineering graduate trying to form an exit plan. I have been moving towards starting a business for years and will once I have a validateable idea. I'm considering working in engineering and then getting an MBA. Edit: If not an MBA, what other graduate program is worth investigating? [link] [comments] |
What’s one thing you regret doing/not doing when starting your business? Posted: 02 May 2021 07:08 AM PDT Just curious, as I'm in the process of choosing which project of mine I should focus on / things to look out for [link] [comments] |

How do I create a team and how do I manage it? Posted: 02 May 2021 06:06 AM PDT Hello everyone! I am currently owning my parents' business and things are going pretty well. Right now I am trying to find someone who is a perfect fit for a sales position, since we are trying to "step back" and manage the things from "the back". The problem there is that I don't know where to search for that person and how do I create a connection with him, since he will be our first ever employee, also how do I manage all these things? I am at the beginning but currently as the things are right now, I am doing a pretty well job I say. Nor my parents know these things and I don't know where to seek for help. We have a huge advantage since our goods are unique in my country and there are not too many competitors. Can you help me with concrete things? Or maybe if you can recommend me some books about how to be a good leader and how to manage things. Thanks a lot guys!!! [link] [comments] |
36m, newly diagnosed adhd, handyman & more Posted: 02 May 2021 08:13 AM PDT Hello, I am 36, diagnosed with adhd two weeks after covid initially hit here in Canada. With much therapy, prescribed meds, and personal realizations coming daily, I finally realize what I CAN be when I grow up😇 I want to be a specialized handyman, but not with specific trades, I have a vision and I'm not sure where to go from here. I feel so lost, dealing with all the tribulations at the moment it feels impossible. My dream is doable I just need help. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

How are the business owners here dealing with sick days during the pandemic? Posted: 02 May 2021 12:42 PM PDT A few days ago Ontario finally caved to months of pressure and announced a paid sick days program. And the overwhelming reaction is that is has fallen flatly, and squarely, on its face. Let's get into the details. IT'S NOT COMPLICATED, IT'S ALSO NOT MUCHOntario will now cover up to $200/day if you need to miss work for any of the following reasons:
A doctors note is not needed in order to qualify. If an employee takes their three days (and they need not be consecutive), their employer is required to pay them their wage for the day, up to a maximum of $200. So if you make more than $200/day in your job, too bad, you're probably rich enough anyhow to survive, is what we read between the lines here. 🤷♂️ It is then the requirement of the employer to get reimbursed from the Ontario government. How and where you ask? Well, unfortunately that hasn't been released yet. But the thinking is probably through the WSIB program somehow? If you need more than 3 days (and ummm.... the requirement is to isolate for 14 days if you have COVID so.....), you then as the employee have to apply for the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit. Which is $500 for one week. GOOD TRY, (BUT DID FORD REALLY TRY...?)For those who aren't aware, southern Ontario is the dumpster fire of COVID in Canada currently. Cases just finally dropped under 4,000/day. The lockdowns, especially in the Toronto area, have been fierce. Restaurants have been closed for over 300 days since the pandemic began. However, the data shows the lockdowns are going after the wrong places. According to the Toronto Star, 69% of outbreaks are occurring in warehouses, distribution facilities, construction sites, food processing plants and even offices. These environments see larger number of employees in tighter spaces, working together. The ability for transmission is high. They are also lower paying jobs with people who can't afford to go on long sick leaves. 3 days isn't going to cut it. This is why the outbreaks keep growing. Until people are properly compensated for staying away, they're going to continue not staying away. It's simple economics for them. I guess get out the marshmallows because Ontario will continue to burn at this rate, unless more heroes like Peel Region step up and force the isolated shutdowns of facilities that have an outbreak, well below the provincial threshold. But it sure would be nice if these people who keep the economy, and all of our businesses, going, were helped out. ------------------- Thanks a ton for making it this far! The problem with niches is that the audience is too small to actually make a decent amount Posted: 02 May 2021 02:54 AM PDT When you think about the amount of value provided by the likes of Amazon Prime for 12 bucks a month or netflix , its hard to justify charging multiples of that for an online service. The issue compounds even more when the service is niche and the audience is small. How do you guys estimate the potential worth of a niche? Sometimes even an elegant solution is something no one wants to pay for [link] [comments] |
0 - $5000 a month on fiverr in two years - success story and tips to succeed on the platform Posted: 02 May 2021 02:29 PM PDT Hello!! I've recently hit $5000 a month on fiverr from copywriting. It's an amazing feeling and I'd like to share my journey to inspire others and help struggling freelancers make some money. It all started around two years ago in university. I had little experience. No contacts. Just a natural talent at writing and a laptop. I was struggling for cash and stuck in and out of soul destroying call centres etc. One day I put a gig up on fiverr on a whim. I didn't expect much from it but I really worked hard to make the gig appealing and my profile amazing. It was a really underserved niche so I can't tell to protect my interests (sorry lol). What I can disclose is that it was writing profile pages for a certain niche online platform. What I did was look up my competition and saw what they were offering. I simply offered lower prices and more value in the packages. Competition offering 300 words? I'll offer 400 and so on. I also figured out what the market really looked for that other sellers were not providing and framed that as my main selling point to differentiate myself. The thing with fiverr is you need to start with low rates to get your reviews up then you can up your prices over time. Around four months pass and suddenly I get a sale for $20. I made sure to over deliver and get it absolutely perfect. Then I get an absolutely amazing review and a $10 tip. This built up over time and I eventually got to $500 a month. I never expected it to go further; it was just a little side hustle. Long story short I was studying music. I saw this as my last chance to fulfill my dreams of being in the industry so I was practicing like 12 hours a day and pushing myself to the limit while volunteering at multiple jobs in the industry for contacts and experience. Well this took its toll and disaster struck, I had a mental breakdown, got sectioned, dropped out of uni, got stuck back at my parents and had to sign onto welfare as my job was in a nightclub and stopped due to covid 19. It was a super dark point of my life and I thought I was truly doomed. I'd wasted like three years of my life chasing dreams in the music industry to just end up in poverty and with no qualifications. That's when I started focusing more on fiverr. I looked at what other sellers were doing and made gigs using the same strategy. Better value, unique selling point and highly niched. A few of the gigs I struck gold with and I went from $500 a month to $5000 in the space of like six months it was surreal. I'd never made so much money in my life. I was way over my head an inexperienced in copywriting though so I literally had to learn quickly as I went along. Picking up every book on the subject and refining my skills with every order. Luckily I'd worked in door-to-door sales and advertising sales for two years leading up to this so i had the fundamentals of sales and persuasion programmed into me which helped. Honestly if you want to learn great business skills get a job in sales. Now, I had medical issues at one point and a load of orders came through late. This has reduced my profits by 15%. And probably going to prevent me from being promoted to top rated seller :( So if you are on the platform I highly recommend you leave at least two days before the deadline for when you deliver your work, because late deliveries can be catastrophic and end your fiverr career dead in its tracks. I got really lucky and kept most of my gig rankings. Probably cos I was bringing in so much money to the site. But yeah. If anyone has any questions about succeeding at fiverr feel free to shoot me a message and I will help you. My main advice is this. Niche down. Deliver quickly (don't leave it till the last minute) and respond to revision requests as fast as possible. This will make the algorithm like you. And of course provide high quality work and constantly refine your skills. I have nearly a thousand positive reviews now and over 1500 orders. My next step is to get an upwork account going to diversify my income streams, as well as use the profits to source regular leads outside of fiverr. As well as write ebooks for more income. Then I will make courses on subjects like copywriting, branding and freelancing for passive income. My goal is to get to a point where I could lose one source of income and still be okay. It's nice to have that level of security in your life. Here's a pic of my earnings from april and stats: [link] [comments] |
I want to sell books. Why is it so hard? Posted: 02 May 2021 02:27 PM PDT Seriously books sell for so cheap online I feel like I have to create my own website to sell these books because I want to sell books at a reasonable price but online there so freaking low the profit margins are crazy thin. How much percentage of a company should an investor ask for? Posted: 02 May 2021 01:29 PM PDT Hey guys, I found an investor who has enough money to fund my entire operation. I'm just wondering, what percentage of profits should this investor receive? What's reasonable? This investor wants to no other role or responsibility in the company at all. They just want to fund the amount of money needed up front and want to receive a percentage of the profits at the end of it all. Thanks to whoever can answer this, or give me a formula to go by to figure out a ball park number 🙂 [link] [comments] |

How do you piece this equity puzzle? Posted: 02 May 2021 12:07 PM PDT Exiting a graduate course where a startup idea (both B2B & B2C) was formalized. This is a team of 3 co-founders, where all will be working on part-time. Our upcoming efforts will be put into developing an MVP within 6-12 months, exploring professional partnerships & interest, and landing any potential investments. How would you divide equity amongst the 3 considering their experience, value, and work so far? 1️⃣ Co-founder #1 -- Current C-suite executive (Chief Strategist) with high social IQ and networking relationships. Has been a part of 2 startup exits. Has scouted and set up meetings with key individuals (advisors, engineers, etc...). Will be focused on getting resources, scouting talent, and business strategy. 2️⃣ Co-founder #2 -- Original idea founder. Designer/coder/visionary. Main innovator of all product features, designs, prototypes, mission values, and ideas for revenue generation. Will be coding MVP with other non-cofounders, pioneering any future designs/ideation, and leading product/~business strategy. 3️⃣ Co-founder #3 -- Current VC. Fleshed out business strategy and will be engaging in sales & partnerships. BONUS QUESTION: What CxO titles (if any) would you assign to whom and why? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 May 2021 05:54 AM PDT Hey my name is Gal. I've had an idea for an app that I know for a fact will work, as theres a paid app for it that people are going mad about. I thought about doing the same concept for free with some monetization going on. I have the whole idea planned out but I got to several road blocks and would love to hear your guys opinions and if anyone of you guys had launched their apps, I'd love some guidance. Firstly I wanted to know wheres the best place to get someone to make the app and isnt it risky? Cant they just take the app I paid them to make and publish it as their own? (Altough I paid for it) Secondly I was wondering how do I get an app on the app store? How does ad monetizing works? How do I make in app subscriptions work? I'm so confused😅 Lastly I wanted to know what a general road map I need to follow and the steps I need to do before publishing the app to the public? Any help is very much appreciated! There is nothing harder than changing the company name 2 months in. Posted: 01 May 2021 04:24 PM PDT |
Posted: 01 May 2021 07:19 PM PDT If you're reading this, I appreciate you taking the time. I've had this idea for a long time and it keeps making more and more sense to me. I want to turn abandoned malls and strip malls into hydroponic food forests. I truly believe you could service a restaurant and grocery store on site with the infrastructure we are currently using for retail. Right now so many doing hydroponics are only doing leafy greens with hydroponics, but how many salads can people really eat. I believe you can take advantage of existing electrical, plumbing, and hvac systems to grow a multitude of different crops. Giant parking lots can have solar panels, rain water capture or green houses. If you get crazy you could use fish, chickens, goats, rabbits or crickets for protein. In a mall different store fronts could be set up with different climates to grow different things. 40% of food end up in the garbage. Because we have to ship it around the world when we used to have farms near towns. Food is now grown to be shipped, and is typically nutrient deficient garbage. Due to the cost of shipping and spoilage, I know that this food can be grown locally, supporting great jobs, with higher nutrient content than is currently available at affordable prices. I even think you can stack community benefit programs at these facilities. Like on site day care centers, volunteer programs and pet rescues, playgrounds with kinetic energy toys to educate the kids about renewable resources. It could really be a positive community space. I believe there is a community that has an abandoned strip mall just sitting there waiting to be used, and would happily provide tax incentives for this program. Hydroponics, aquaponics, permaculture, vermaculture... The best of all these techniques can come together to become a profitable and beneficial company. My initial thought would be to start with a single small warehouse and grow tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, basil, cilantro and either make my own sauce I could sell, or just sell it to restaurants as a proof of concept. This is infinitely scalable, and I know for a fact can be done right. What I currently lack is someone with a lawyerly mind. I need someone that understand zoning, and processing, and a document minded person. Funding is another... Hurdle. But I do believe if I could come up with an actionable plan I could figure out some funding for it. If anyone has any ideas or interest please feel free to reach out. If not I'll just keep dreaming and scheming and trying to figure things out along the way till I get it right. Cheers [link] [comments] |
