Stop trying to do your own books!! PLEASE.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:32 PM PDT

I'm relatively new here, but I've been trying to be diligent with answering questions that I can and helping out where I can. I've noticed already that many many of the questions on here are related to accounting and bookkeeping issues.

I just want to put this out there to the community, unless you own an accounting firm or bookkeeping business, you should not be doing your own books and accounting!

The most important factor for the success of your business is the team that you build. And the first person you should be adding to your team is an accountant and then a bookkeeper. It is not worth your time and money to try to figure these things out and spend hours sitting in front of a computer doing entries. If your business is going to be successful your time and money is going to have to be better use than that.

Find a local tax accountant and get them to make sure that you're set up is all good. Get a QuickBooks subscription. And find a local outsourced bookkeeper who can do entries, reconciliations and reports for you.

Just invest early on in this most basic of business functions and it will pay dividends many many times over in the future.

I am not an accountant or a bookkeeper. But I am a serial entrepreneur, executive coach, and business consultant. This is the most common issue across the many many businesses I have run and worked with. Just do it.

Do you guys ever get a bit on edge when you meet people who are in high flying jobs whereas your business is sort of small?

I feel like maybe i am not doing as much with my life when i talk about my small business in front of my friends, who are all jealous of me but i am jealous of them.

Is a small business really better than a corporate job?

Suggestions for the best discount percentage to offer students writing exams

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Hello, we are a food, groceries and farm fresh delivery company. In few days, students in three Institutions around our operating locations will be writing their exams for two - three weeks.

During exams, students more than ever need things done quicker and better, to create more time for studying.

As we cover an interesting part by making meals, groceries readily available to students with no hassle. We intend to give exam discounts to strengthen the ongoing brand loyalty and encourage first time purchase.

This is also projected to increase the time needed for reading as making decisions for what to cook, getting the needed ingredients and cooking itself are time consuming especially during EXAMS.

Suggestions are needed for the best percentage to offer?

    Thank You

Dropshipping My Items Coming From China (How can I get faster Delivery)

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:49 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I recently started my own clothing dropshipping store. It's doing so so well and the orders keep flying in. But the issue that is holding me back is the delivery time. It is taking around 10-15 days to get there.

I have 89 products with 1.4K variants so I can't buy in bulk. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do in order to get the faster shipping? Thanks so much

I do most of the work but still get 50% of the profit.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:11 PM PDT

My brother in law and I started a photobooth business together back in 2019 as part time job for the weekends. Unfortunately 2020 was not a really good year for us but 2021 is looking promising.

When we first started the company we need a Photobooth but we weren't satisfied with any of the pre-built models we've seen online, so we decided to build one from scratch. He much more hands on and better at building projects than I am, but I'm more tech savier than he is, I did my research on what equipment we need to for the booth. All expenses were split 50/50.

We wouldn't have this business if it weren't for him constructing our photobooth, that I am fully grateful of. But right now, I'm left with most of the work. Not only do I perform maintenance on all our software and equipment but I'm also running our social media accounts, talking to clients and also work on their photostrip designs and manage expenses. Not to mention we use my vehicle for travel because it much more spacious. We split our profits 50/50 and it seems a bit unfair for the amount of work I do.

I sure he would understand if I were to bring it up to him (he a very gentle guy) but he doesn't know how run most of the things that I do. I could teach him of course but with him being a truck driver full time, he can't deal with clients while on the road (I work at maintenance worker at a school district at night, I have plenty of down time when I'm finished with work).

How should bring this up and what could be a good percentage to split profits to?

    Tldr:

    Profits Split 50/50

His Contribution and Duties -Built PhotoBooth -Setup the Camera (he has knowledge how to use a dslr and I don't) -Help with setup at day of event -Help on days of event as a attendant

My Contribution and Duties -Runs Social Media for marketing -Deal with clients -work on designing the photostrip for the client -Use my vehicle for transporting the photobooth -Setup photobooth at day of event -work as photobooth attendant as well

What is a good percentage to split profits.

Starting a coding/robotics school for kids

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT

    Hi,

Me and my wife are planning on starting an in-person coding school for kids ages 6-10. We will base our program around the Lego Education and the Dash and Dot platforms at the beggining. My research shows that there is high demand for such services in my country and not enough supply - there are a few schools, but all of them are completely booked (even now - through the pandemic) and some of them aren't really inviting places (at least to my standards - an empty room with some rubber floor mats and a few robots :-/ ).

I am planning on building the business together with my life, with me as the technical consultant and she the day-to-day manager. We will be hiring students for leading the lessons, who will be paid just an hourly rate.

I know that this industry is already huge in India, China, and in the USA, from where I am drawing some of my inspiration.

I have been lookin at the CodeNinjas franchise which I think has a few very well developed ideas (I don't think that they are original) - like the colored wrist bands for the kids, and the drop-in program - kids can pay a monthly fee and come around two times a week, whenever they find appropriate.

We want to offer such drop-in program as well, but it appears to be very hard to do from scheduling and personnel management perspective. We are wondering if someone has some insight, how exactly are they doing this? What happens for example if suddenly more kids decide to come than the available mentors/senseis? Are they paying for staff just to hang around when there are no kids?

We would welcome any other feedback, advice, and opinion you may have on our idea. We are pretty excited about it, and have been building materials around the project for some time now. We plan on launching in early October, so still have lots of time for preparation, planning and consideraion.

    Thanks.

How do you guys keep quiet while building your businesses?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:49 AM PDT

I get excited over any progress and want to share them with people, like a parent gushing over their kid. It's like this is all I think about and talk about. But I don't want to annoy people with my incessant rants.

I think the advice "build quietly, let the results speak for themselves" is ideal and dignified. Is this common? Is this an ego thing? Will this wane over time? How do you guys keep quiet? Any advice?

EDIT: lots of good perspectives in here. Thank you guys!

How do I price correctly to: be valuable, help small business owners, and not destroy myself?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:12 AM PDT

I'm a marketer, I love being valuable, and I want to help small businesses grow.

My problem is I would go to the point where I'd put in more free work without anyone knowing, for weeks on end, just because I'm afraid that the client isn't going to be happy or something.

How can I still be valuable without going too far. What's the benchmark?

Can you please give ideal ROIs, or ideal (and realistic) numbers? e.g. I would be really happy if I spent X on marketing and got Y back on a consistent basis.

    Restaurant Revitalization Fund-Who Qualifies?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:06 PM PDT

Need help with this newest grant, the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, or RRF. I wonder why I've not seen many post about this. The application registration opened today, with applications being accepted starting Monday. From what I read, these are large amounts of grants. We are a family entertainment center with a full Cafe. We sell a LOT of pizzas (along with many other cafe items) as we host dozens of birthday parties every weekend. We were closed a full 4months of 2020 due to covid. The process sounds easy and very quick to apply. Basically...do I qualify? And, if I do, do I just use our Food and Beverage gross revenues from 2019 compared to 2020? Or, do I use our total gross revenue (including things other than food and beverage? I wouldn't think so?). On an SBA youtube video, they state bowling alleys qualified, so I don't know how I'd be different. Then, in another doc, I read that 33% of gross revenues had to be shown were from food/beverage. I have a note out to my bookkeepers to see what my revenues for food/bev are compared to entrance, etc.

    Thoughts? Insight? Help? Thank you!

how close can a trademark be to an existing one?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:01 PM PDT

dunno if this is the right place for this, but I'll try. How close can a trademark be to an existing one (USA). for example if someone has trademarked BikeMakers and you want to be CycleMakers and you both work with making bicycles is that too close? in our case, I want to trademark something we thought we came up with and in my search found something else that is close. It is essentially this format: we both have the same first word, they have a different second word than we would, but the words mean the same thing. theirs is already trademarked. we operate in the same space. another hypothetical: FunkyWoman Clothing vs FunkyGal Clothing.

should I continue to pursue my trademark or re-think naming. I'm not concerned about competition or confusion, I want to legally trademark our phrase and not have trouble later because it is close to an existing mark.

Options for action: Lendio and Ready Capital

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:21 PM PDT

Hey folks Ive been reading the posts with great appreciation. I too have experienced what you have and still are. Well I do believe enough is enough. I am a Pro Se attorney an actual attorneys nightmare. Ive litigated several lawsuits in the past on my own accord successfully. Ive abandoned my career in engineering to pursue my JD and I begin in the fall. I will be clerking in Washington DC. The old saying that "only a fool represents himself" is not necessarily true. However. before we go that route, there are some very lethal and effective directions we should exhaust. So....lets take a look at what our main objective is. 1. Do we want damages? 2. Do we want injunctive relief...i.e. Immediately get your shit together and begin funding small business owners

No.1 would take years and it would be contrary to our best interests. No. 2 Reasonably this is most likely our best solution

Ok, so Say if we got 25 to 50 signatures on our petition this would achieve the leverage required to report this disturbing situation to my friends at the Government Accounting Office. This is the Feds bird dogs. I do believe we must attack at the head of the snake which is the SBA.

I would be more than happy to initiate and pen a letter to the Director of the GAO and deliver a letter filled with incentives to investigate the SBA, Lendio and finally Ready Capital.

Now lets look at the content of our letter and what resources we have to not only produce a compelling narrative of our hardship but the overall effect on our diversified economies. For example, Native American businesses and communities are starving literally as well as our folks of Color, Latinos and Asians. We could pen actual experiences from our group members which will not only grab the GAOs attention but its going to really piss them off. They will not only assign one attorney they will assign a division. This will cost us nothing but time and effort.

Step 1. I will pen the petition which will include our main objective of securing immediate injunctive relief.

Step 2. We post it and all members sign it.

Step 3. We produce short essays from everyone on how this nightmare is affecting their livelihood i want you guys to go in the gutter how this is situation is ripping you a new asshole. I want them to see your pain hard.

The next option is to cc a copy of this and address it to the DOJ and DOI this will raise eyebrows and get phones ringing. We will also lobby a few key senators.

Gentlemen we have the resources we have the leverage we have the system. In numbers we have a massive voice and were comin. If you guys have any input let me know.

    Pitch me your software /app

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:11 PM PDT

    Pitch me your software/app!

Just to give an idea of what i use now and what its for:

Pipedrive: sales pipeline management helps me keep track of deals/leads and see where they are along the sales cycle

Trello: process management, helps me keep track of what i need from my clients at which specific stage of the sales cycle like their income documents (tax paper /paystub) at the moment they find a house they want.

Folio by amitree: automatic communication to clients based on milestones reached in the mortgage application.

Finmo/floify : pos system to manage the mortgage application and automate document collection

    8x8 Phone System PSA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:47 AM PDT

To preface, I am an IT professional and work in software development. A client of mine used 8x8 from March 2019 to January 2021 and canceled due to a poor app, calls dropping, and call transfers not working. After 10+ support cases and multiple times calling in and being connected with different agents hasn't helped fix any of their issues. The 8x8 Work app is horrible and dropped 10% of calls per week, call transferring never worked, and any other app feature maybe worked half the time. This client of mine entered a three-year contract in 2019, and due to better costs, they chose a three-year contract paid monthly. Now that we have left 8x8 and have about 14 months left, they want to charge about $5k for early termination fees. 8x8 just has horrible service considering the number of support cases that were open during our time using them. We have now switched RingCentral, and everything is running smoothly, and transfers actually work. If anyone is deciding on a new phone service provider for their company, stay very far away from 8x8. It's more expensive than most competitors and can't even do its job of making/receiving calls.

As you grow your business how do you document your thoughts, plans, opportunities, and communications?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:36 PM PDT

As mentioned in the title, as a business grows and we start to take on more hires, how do you document your plans, day to day work, tasks assigned, or discussed, and more so that you have a reference, and can recall it immediately rather than having something in your head and remembering it at random points.

I guess in simple terms be better organized?

    Thank you.

Aside from they're quality of work, what is something that sets them apart from everyone else, and why you call them back for future projects. Thank you!!

What type of professional should I seek when it comes to electing taxes for a new LLC? And general questions in starting a new business.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:42 PM PDT

I'm in the process of opening up a new business, luxury dog kennel.

Honestly, I'm doing a lot of things at once, and I'm kind of confused on what all I need to do. I'm already working with my county's small business development center, and my advisor has been very helpful with resources and steps, but I was wondering if there is a professional I can consult when it comes to starting my new business? Like is there a person whose job is to help people start their new business, or no... if these people don't exist, it's fine because I'm working with the SBDC, but just curious.

Secondly, I've received my EIN number, and I've been researching on tax structures. There are currently 2 members in the LLC, but I think we will get a 3rd member - but that's not confirmed now. So who should I consult in order to best figure out what tax structure is best? Any advice would be helpful. Im mainly considering S Corp tax structure, but I think it would be wise to consult a professional so who am I looking for - tax attorney? A CPA? What type of professional would help me choose? I live in texas btw if that helps.

Lastly, so I've been working on the feasibility plan and business plan and my SBDC advisor will be helping me tweak this and adjust as necessary when I'm ready to apply for loans. I think what I need to work on next since I've already gotten my EIN, is open a business checking account, set up accounting program?, browse business liability insurances, set up sales tax (TX comptroller). Is that correct? Anything else I'm missing small or large? I haven't mentioned location because I'm not sure if I need to start looking now, or after I figure out most of my legal things? I'm looking to lease and will probably be consulting a commercial broker - I'm assuming that's who I need to go to?

Any other help is greatly appreciated.
