Started a small baking out of my home side hustle

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 05:57 PM PST

(I wasn't sure if this was the right sub to post in, I've only posted once before) My boyfriend and I had been talking for the last little while on how to bring in a bit of extra cash every month to start putting a bigger dent into a couple of big bills we have. When I was younger(I'm 34) I thought about having my own Bakery, but being a single mom at the time, the overhead was extremely daunting. Anyways, a couple of weeks ago, he mentioned that I could start baking and selling from home (Nova Scotia, we don't have cottage law here) and I threw myself into testing out a few of my recipes, bringing some into work and getting unbiased feedback from co-workers. 3 recipes later and countless bakes to get it just right, I got my first order this past Thursday, two more Friday and another large order of 3 dozen today for tomorrow. So, word of mouth has been really great so far, but of course I want to expand, I don't have a very big menu yet (literally 2 products and one I still need to price out).

So, I guess I need some advice, the boyfriend (who's extremely supportive) thinks I could and should start a Facebook page and just keep adding to my menu after perfecting each new recipe to my standards. I found a good website to keep track of how much of what I buy costs and how much my recipes actually cost me to bake. I really want this to work, I live in a tiny town with several other small communities in the surrounding area and there isn't a whole lot of bakery's. I need a lot of advice from anyone in similar business!

Asked CPA “friend” to help with my initial Quickbooks setup, ended up being charged $900 for about 26 hours of unwarranted work!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:54 AM PST

I just started a small business in August of 2020 and I asked a "friend" to help set up my quickbooks to make sure the bank account and credit card is connected properly then categorize a few of the repeating transactions, so I can follow her examples and account for all of my 2020 sales myself. I told her I would pay her normal rate of about $35/hr, thinking it should only take 3 hours or less. She ends up doing the WHOLE 2020!

    My texts word for word:

Nov 2020: I have a personal favor! Do you know how to use quickbooks? My best friend and i started a side apparel company. And I have no idea how to set up quickbooks. We added the bank account and credit card that is used for purchases, but not sure how to correctly classify the transactions. Would you be able to help me set it up and classify a few of the repeating transactions & then I can go in and do the rest by following your examples?

Jan 2021: (She asked if I still need help) Yes If you can please help me set it up in the next 3 weeks. I got the app that you recommended. Hopefully after you set it up, I can take it from there and Still ok to pay £25/hr

    —-

I'm pretty sure I was extremely clear in my request, with just asking for the set up and only doing a few example transactions.

Has anyone experienced this? Do I still have to pay for her entire invoice even though she did way more work than requested? I feel like she took advantage of me. She emailed the invoice saying I made a profit of just under $1200 in 2020, then proceeded to bill me $900 of it. 😣 What would you guys do?

Creating an LLC, but not prepared to open for around a year

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:54 AM PST

Partner and myself are in the process of creating our own small business, we have most the business plan fleshed out and have spoken to SCORE mentors. Only problem is we cannot get any profit margins, because wholesalers will not give us prices until we have a Business, EIN, and Resale license. We are looking to get a small business loan, so the most important part of the business plan are the finances, kinda hard to do without any numbers.

So my question is this can we go ahead and create our LLC and just not use it until we have everything ready? This will be in the state of Virginia. Thanks in advance for your help.

Has anyone heard of what PPP round 2.0 will do IF you already accepted one, but your gross is higher?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:28 AM PST

Kinda curious about this. Making it a thread (mods can delete it if needed) but since it's nothing confirmed so far I'd like to hear various opinions.

Apparently with PPP 2.0 they're making it so it can be on gross rather than calculated income. For me personally that is quite a bit higher, but I've already accepted PPP 2.0. Has anyone heard anything from government, SBA, or anything of the sort? It seems really awful if there isn't any retroactive. I would almost consider returning the money and reaapplying to a different lender if that's the case. Cuirious if you guys have heard anything!

    Dog Treat Business

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 05:13 PM PST

I'm looking to open a homemade dog treat business and just wondered if anyone who's done/doing it can give me some advice. Is it worth it? I'm in a large metropolitan area, but totally new to business and fairly new to baking. I've done some research about restrictions but haven't found much reliable feedback about actually running this type of business- mainly just other businesses selling packages on how to start a barkery. Any advice is appreciated!

What does "commercial business" mean to you?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:30 AM PST

I'm looking for a phrase to define a market we serve, what I'm currently calling the "commercial sector". Examples of the clients we want are commercial construction companies, engineering firms, logistics and freight, heavy equipment manufacturers, and machine shops. Not consumer and only a narrow part of the B2B spectrum.

"We specialize in the commercial sector" is my current message, but I'm not sure it's best. The descriptor "commercial" means different things in different industries and is a regional phrase, more used in some parts of the country than others.

So, "We specialize in serving [fill in the blank] clients" is the question I'm asking for input on. Is there a better word than "commercial"?

Have you ever considered a dedicated team to help you grow your business?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 02:35 AM PST

Talent shortage in a given geography, a sudden spike in demand, hiring processes that take over six months to identify and onboard a developer, only to find out they're not the right fit after a week.

These are just some of the reasons why some of our clients decide to consider a dedicated team. And what inspired our team to create this resource: https://altar.io/ultimate-guide-dedicated-software-development-team/

Does anyone here got experience from running an after sales service?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:41 AM PST

Hey. I currently run a moving/cleaning business but I consider shifting to a different business with more returning customers/change of scenery. I´m thinking about starting an after sales business because that way I can #1 Sell a product, #2 Install the product, 3# Do maintenance. Anyone here have a tip or two going into such a business? I´m mainly looking for products I can import cheap from china/asia and sell at a higher price here in Scandinavia. My own ideas are: Coffie/water-machines to offices, Install og do maintenance of air conditioning systems, selling and installing awnings.

Please come with more ideas and tips. Thank you! :-)

    Sending invoices in E-commerce

Anyone know of a Free system for tracking customers and orders?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:50 PM PST

    Howdy,

My daughter started her own little business selling things that she makes, Right now she just has information in an Excel spreadsheet. I'm looking for something a bit more powerful that uses some sort of database on the back end.

I know I could make something in Access that might work but am hoping there might be an online company that has a free version of something for someone with minimal information to store.

All we're looking to store is Customer info (name, address, etc) and Order info (who, what, how many, etc), and that's it. I don't need anything to actually process payments, handle inventory, or anything like that.

    Thanks!

Can I delete work I've done for a clients app if they don't pay me?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 06:47 PM PST

Simple question, I've been making dashboards for a client. They're now having "internal issues with partners" that is preventing them from paying me.

At this point I don't want to work with them and would just like my check and to be left alone but if that doesn't happen can I delete the work I've done within their system if I still have access?

It isn't enough work to really be worth the time it would take to go to small claims court, especially since I'd have to travel to another state to do that. I'd rather just remove my contribution and they can figure it out for themselves.

Can you turn ‘buying houses and renting them out’ into a business?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 02:06 AM PST

I'm just a teenager, but I consider myself ambitious with high aspirations. I've always been interested in real estate - it's the way of the future. Blah Blah blah a cliche story

So can you buy houses, rent them out, and collect the money - be turned into a business? Can it become profitable? I get that I would take quite a long time to buy the houses, but once you do it on a larger enough scale, can you turn it into a business?

    Removing a Facebook review?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 10:01 PM PST

Is it possible to fully delete a review from our businesses Facebook page? Some person got offended over one of our employees stating their knowledge on a topic, so they went to her profile, found our company, and left a dumb review. We read the comment and there is nothing offensive or anything along those lines. 99.99% of people liked her comment and agreed with her but there was that ONE person who got offended for zero reason and figured they were entitled to everything. Our employee didn't argue back or anything and was initially harassed. I've read it's near impossible and we should just remove reviews altogether but I don't want to do that. We have a very high rating and have some fair reviews about some of our past projects. This one however, is not related to our business and she just made up lies about her personal customer experience... which never existed. It looks so stupid on our page, it doesn't even relate to anything we do and it's clear to see that.

Carnival / fairgrounds games at my local flea market

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 09:47 PM PST

There's a flea market in my area that is only open Friday to Sunday. They have probably 300-500 stalls, They are JAM PACKED with thousands of people. Even during covid. People with cash in hand.

There's plenty of food places there selling kettle corn, hot pickles, grill food, boiled peanuts (all kinds of great fair foods).

My idea is set up 2-3 booths next to each other running traditional fair games (like pick the rubber ducky, ring toss, squirt gun into the hole, knock over the bowling pins, etc etc).

The good news is, this stuff is relatively inexpensive, and decor could be crude but fun. Also, renting a booth at this place is fairly inexpensive and low commitment.

The bad news is I don't know anything about running carnival games, I would love guidance from someone familiar with carnival or fairgrounds. I know most of these carnival game owners travel the country, by I can't help but think that the humongous foot traffic of my local flea market would be a good fit (everyone from grandma winning a teddy bear for their grandson, to the younger guy who wants to show his muscle with the baseball toss, to the teenage girl who wants to win a fish on the ring toss or whatever).

Currently have a Sole Proprietorship and want to start a related online shop, can I add a DBA under it or should I open another Sole Proprietorship?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:59 PM PST

I've been searching the web but can't seem to find an answer to my question, so I'd appreciate any input you might have!

I'm currently the sole proprietor of a business I call "Deathbyhotcheetos (full legal name) Photography." I mostly photograph events, but I'm interested in starting an online shop selling prints of photos I've taken from travels as well as prints of my own designs/illustrations, and I'd like my shop website brand to be called something more broad like "Deathbyhotcheetos Arts" or maybe a totally different name altogether (ex: "Prints Galore"). If possible, I'd like not to have to set up a totally separate business/company, just to keep things easier for bookkeeping and come tax time. But what's the best way to go about this?

    Should I:

    1. Set up a DBA for "Deathbyhotcheetos Arts" under "Deathbyhotcheetos Photography"?
    2. Rename my business completely to "Deathbyhotcheetos Arts"? (Is this even required by the IRS to be officially changed through documentation since my sole proprietorship is under my full name? Does the "Arts" or "Photography" that come after my name matter at all?)
    3. Set up a totally separate sole proprietorship called "Deathbyhotcheetos Arts"?

And how would these options affect how I file for taxes? Would I need to file two Schedule Cs?

    Thanks so much in advance!

    Invoicing System/Apps

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:37 PM PST

    Hi, all!

I have a small business and looking to look a bit more professional with an invoicing system. Right now, I am just providing my banking info; however, I have clients in different parts of the world, and I don't want them to be paying bank transfer fees.

Anyhow, I was wondering if any of you have any invoicing solutions that would allow me to send invoices in euros and that would not charge my clients when they pay. I do not mind paying a small service fee - but of course, the lower the fee the, the better.

Ideally, too, when I send out an invoice, I would like to be able to just send a link via email and be able to provide a little thank you note.

Thank you for the help in advance!

help naming a solo legal business?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:36 PM PST

I'll be providing free or very low cost advice on estate planning, but only for very small estates - people who don't have the cash or assets to pay for a regular lawyer. I feel like everyone should have the opportunity to plan for death/disability -getting POAs, advance directives, and simple wills. The word "estate" is a bit off-putting because many of these people don't think of themselves as having an estate. And people often focus on a will, when there's a lot more to this kind of planning then just figuring out how you want to distribute assets.

I'd use my name, but I hate both my first and last name. I've been thinking about this for a couple years and haven't found anything that sounds good. So - small business redditors, who are likely far more clever than me, any ideas?
