Has anyone been experiencing feelings of overwhelm with their business? If so what has been your main overwhelmers?

I feel like this has been a common theme that has popped up and would be a good discussion post.

I want to start selling shirts with designs as a hobby, what are some good quality shirt sites?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 03:48 AM PDT

So I want to start making my own designs and putting them on some shirts for myself, and just as a small hobby, probably on an Etsy shop. I really like Next Level Apparel's material but it seems like such a mission to get an account created since i'm not an actual business. Any good quality, sites I could use? (100% cotton) too if possible. Going for that vintage style.

    Question - Retail Turnover

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:27 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I recently launched a new business, and have have gotten my product into about 32 liquor stores in my area. Initially it was selling like crazy but has seemed to level off (as I expected). My question is for anyone who manages liquor stores or retail locations.

What kind of inventory turnover do you need to see to justify keeping a product on your self? 1-2 a day? a few a week? - I am very curious about this and appreciate any and all feedback.

    Thanks!

How can I implement benifits to retain key employees?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:58 AM PDT

I'm a partner in a family owned business that operates a restaurant and hotel. We're highly seasonal and range from almost 80 employees during our peak months to less than 30 during the off season. We have less than 50 full time equivalent employees.

We'd like to figure out a way to offer some benifits to a few of our key people that make the business function day to day and have been with us for decades. We slowly loose one or two good people every few years because they need medical or want retirement. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to offer those types of benifits to all of our employees. I've been told that you can't cherry pick recipients for benifits and it's either an all or nothing setup. We're located in a rural location and there isn't a lot of 'good' jobs to be had in the area.

Should I forget this idea and just pay them more? Give them bonuses? Or is there a way around this? I thought about forming a separate overarching business. That business would employ a core management team consisting of all the employees that had earned the benifits. I don't know if that's doable/legal. Sadly, that feels kinda shady and some employees might feel left out.

    Any ideas?

Can I buy anything to resell with a Seller's Permit?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:00 PM PDT

I own a coffee shop but we also sell a lot of random merch and knick knacks like plants and pots and keychains etc. I think when I made my Seller's Permit app I only mentioned coffee related items. Can I buy unrelated coffee items with my permit?

Accounting Software - Wave or Zoho Books?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 04:07 PM PDT

    I've recently started a Video Production Business. I'm a Self-Proprietor for now.

I'm looking for free accounting software to start - invoicing and expense scanning / tracking are my priorities right now, though it'd be cool to be able to track mileage too.

Needs might well change as my business grows, but wondering if you'd recommend Zoho Books or Wave to get started?

    Thanks in advance!

My family's business is uncompetitive with their wages. How do we implement a large pay increase without causing turmoil?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 12:41 PM PDT

My family owns a good size machine shop business employing roughly 40 people. We have recently had a few of our most skilled employees leave for more money elsewhere. We are starting to realize that our wages are a little on the light side and we need to implement some raises.

We have several men that we feel need around a $5.00/hr raise in order to keep them working for us.

Should we give it to them all at once, or step this plan in over the next year?

Anyone have any experience with a situation like this?

    Thanks!

    Personal guarantee on restaurant lease

We were silly enough to sign a personal guarantee on a restaurant lease for 10 years and we have only been there for two.

Do you guys have experience negotiate with landlord on exiting the lease with personal guarantee? What worked and what did not work?

    LLC funding question

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 10:03 PM PDT

We created an LLC with three four business partners each own 25% of business via our personal LLC to start a restaurant and with COVID things is getting tough.

We are at the point which we need to invest more money in the mother LLC or we will be out of cash by the end of October.

Now, three out of four business partners believe in the future of the business and one does not want to invest any more money to the business.

How does it work from here? If one of the 25% owner refused to further invest fund while the other three are planning on investing?

    Thank you for your help.

How do I go about my current situation

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 08:52 PM PDT

    Hello Reddit,

I am opening a beverage store with a friend and I am completely new to business. He already has a beverage store of his own and it has been doing great for the past two years. He is looking to expand, and he gave me an opportunity to join him in opening a new store in return that I will take care of everything in this new store for him (payroll, scheduling, marketing, hiring, etc.). I know my way around bookkeeping with QuickBooks, marketing, etc, but I am new to opening a new store and don't know how any of this works and how things should play out. He offered to stay with me and guide me for as long as I need to make sure that I can do everything independently after that. Here is where I need help with:

    • - He told me that if I want 25% of the store, it will cost me $25,000. Is this fair? How do I calculate what 25% is really worth? Should I ask for the financials of his current store? How would I go about negotiating this if it is possible? Should the 25% be based off start up costs and inventory?
    • -This store will be set up as a separate company (corporation) from his current store where I own 25% and he owns 75%, would he be able to screw me over anytime he wanted to? How?
    • -What are some things I should look out for?

    • -What are some other things that I should know?

    Some extra information:

    • - I will be paid a salary as compensation for my time working there + dividends based on annual EBITDA earnings.
    • -I have the same exact rights as him.-If I one day quit working, I will still retain my ownership and be paid that dividend.-His main goal is to not have to spend time going back and forth to this new store as it is very far (but the location is a very good.
    • -I was told that I will not have to personally guarantee any loans.
    • I am new at this and I don't know what to ask or what I should find out other than this, so if there is ANYTHING else that I should go and find out, do not hesitate to tell me.

(If there is any information you may need, please let me know!)

    Serious IT situation.

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 07:33 PM PDT

    Tldr

Cameras upgraded. I leave before program for my desktop is setup. I come back and there's no password or login. Google says it's a "safety feature" by that company and the solution is to uninstall and reinstall. So I do that.

Then I got a pop up about private or public network. I press yes like I would any other time it comes up. NO INTERNET.

This CPU is directly connected via Ethernet as are all others. Never have a problem. So I figure wait until close and reboot modem. I do that and suddenly my best sales guys computer does same thing. Zero internet not even WiFi. Nothing works.

Factory reset the first computer. I restore my best sales guy to the 19th. The 19th date works after like 2 hours of waiting. Then my first cpu starts and suddenly the 19th computer again no internet at all. 19th dated cpu worked even WiFi worked. Now nothing. Now that computer doesn't even let me open up browsers. Nothing! Only my point of sales system.

I think the tech for my cameras changed something in the IP.

Verizon says they don't do anything with that. They won't fix it. They only fix replace their own equipment. This is my problem basically. They have a tech guy coming Sunday but told me again it wasn't their problem essentially. I basically ridiculed them for being the internet service provider but not know anything about what they offer!? They said I had to talk to my camera guy see what they did.

Camera guys company is ADT and they wanted 350 for the hour for emergency service but then they decided to waive it o ou for them to tell me he can't come cuz he's not trained for my system.

    What the fuck.

That's my rant. But what the fuck. I said this to both major companies. How the fuck is this possible? Do I have to hire a damn scientist with a PHD to fix a fucking IP or firewall problem t his guy did! What the fuck?

One guy said to hire an IT guy..... fucking infuriating. I don't know what to do.

For now I have 3 computers left. I hope the issue doesn't spread but I'll be bringing spare laptops should that be the case and using hotspots.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Best way for Canadian to pay US supplier?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 06:50 PM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I'm considering setting up an account with a US supplier. They only accept payments in USD and it has to be made with either US credit cards or via wire transfer. They charge a 3% surcharge on non-USD cards (including Canadian).

This will probably be a recurring payment of around $5000 every 2-3 months. What is the cheapest and most efficient way for me to do this?

Could I set up a US chequing account, convert the USD by myself since I get better rates than the bank, and pay them from that? Or do I have other options?

    Thanks!

Would your rather have a client save your app to their homescreen or add your contact info to their contacts with a thinking to your app?

So many people delete apps or put them in folders so I would rather be saved in the contacts with custom branded info, what's your take? I would include a link to my app in the contact card.

Looking for input. What am I doing wrong/what can I improve?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:30 AM PDT

About 6 months ago I started a candle company. I've put a lot of time and effort into perfecting my product and website but I'm sitting at a .80% conversion rate.

Can anyone take a look at my site and maybe give me some tips or something? Here is the link.

I've been balancing the business with my full time job and honestly I feel myself running out of steam because of lack of sales.

I've been shoveling money into paid ads on Instagram, and am getting a lot of positive attention there, but still no sales.

    Thanks for any help.

    Business ownership question. PLEASE HELP!

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:59 PM PDT

I'm a 25 yr + veteran in the plumbing business. In the past I have worked for myself a couple of times when work was slow with my employer or between jobs. Now I always went to a employer because of health insurance but when I was freelancing I was making A LOT of money NOW That I'm getting older and came to the realization that I produce my own work here what the heck am I not working for myself. Can anyone help me with this. Helping me in a way that will give me advice on how to start it. How to get out. How to get my name out. I live in a small town east of Indianapolis that has 2 plumbing companies already but one is known for high sales tactics and the other is known for inexperienced plumbers. How should I get in the middle and work this?

Happy small-medium business founder mentoring needed :)

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:23 PM PDT

Hi, I own a ERP family business software in Italy and I'm searching for a mentor that has experience on the field. We as a company are in the situation where we have a cutting edge innovative truly web-based product and 500+ clients, but we are just 8 people in the company, with a lot truly a lot of work on me and my father. More than more new companies are asking for our product and I have fear I cannot sustain the growth at best: too much depends on me and my father. I would like to talk with someone that struggled my same situation and solved it in a good way. Of course, if required, paying. Thanks, Guido

College student looking to interview small business owner

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 10:34 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm currently a junior in college and could really use some help. I have an assignment due soon where I have to interview a business owner about what they do. Unfortunately, I had two interviews set up and they both backed out on me last minute. I'm now scrambling to get someone, so if you're willing to talk to me on Zoom for 12-15 minutes, I would really appreciate it! It would need to be before the end of the month, so please let me know if this is something you are interested in. Whether you just started out or have been in the game for a few years, I want to hear from you!

Hoping to get your two cents on growing my handyman business, I'm thinking of hiring an employee for the first time, good idea?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

TL;DR: Thinking of hiring an assistant to answer inquiries and requests (+ admin duties) for my handyman business. Would that be a smart move or are there better strategies at this stage of my business?

Hi guys, thanks in advance for any advice and wisdom you can impart. Im at a plateau. I'm considering hiring my first real employee to help me grow, but I'm wondering if that's actually the best strategy right now or if there's another method I'm overlooking at this stage.

I'm in a more niche corner of the Handyman sector. 70% of my business is mounting televisions, 25% furniture assembly and closet installs, and then the rest is random jobs. Currently just a one man operation with an occasional sub contractor to help out when I get too full.

I opened back up a couple months ago and it's been great. As of now, I'm pulling in about $5k a month in invoices, while being able to take home about 75%. I feel like I hit my stride by making a few big shifts. The biggest element is investing significantly into advertising, more specifically, Yelp. I'm getting a lot of incoming requests. And this is where the catch-22 comes in.

I'm so busy some days, that I don't have time to respond immediately because I've got a 90" TV in my hands and then I'm too exhausted afterwards when I get back to my car. I lose out on customers when they write in at 10am and I dont respond til 6pm. So I go through these waves where I'll have a packed day and I can't respond, then an empty day where I can respond quickly, which leads to another packed day where I can't respond to new inquiries, and the vicious cycle continues.

I feel like hiring an assistant of some sort would help tremendously to increase the billable invoices. Someone that can be answer phone calls, emails, yelp requests, etc. But then also help with some of the administrative duties like sending out estimates and invoices, managing the schedule, posting on sites like facebook, and other misc. tasks. Luckily I have a system/script in place for new customer inquiries, so I wouldn't need anyone to reinvent the wheel (for now). This way I can concentrate on the actual services and then spend my off time on business development instead of just trying to catch up.

Downsides are that it obviously eats into the profits, but in turn may increase my overall numbers. Also, I'm basically the brand of the business. So I'll lose some of that connection with customers if I'm not the first point of contact for them. And I've had a handful of clients who said they specifically chose me because the liked my personality. So I may lose that subsection of customers that are seeking a local handyman (which I am) as opposed to a corporate brand (like Geek Squad)

Maybe I can start off with hiring someone super low part time at $15/hr (or about $300/week), see how it plays out and then gradually increase to full time with more responsibility if I see positive results. And it's something that can be done remotely, so it's ideal for a college student with a mindset for sales and management.

But am I being too optimistic here? Are there key components I'm not considering? Or is there a better strategy to growing my business at this stage that's not as risky as hiring an employee?

What do you guys think? Would be great to hear from other home services folks too.

    Thanks again all.
