Validation went well but now I am getting conflicting results. What am I doing wrong?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:22 AM PDT

Tl;Dr:. My company is based in Brasil and I had good feedback during validation and interviews before developing the MVP but now I can't get companies to pay or users to utilize the MVP properly.

So, I am based in São Paulo and worked, both solo and with my family, in the real estate business for some time. A while back, after hearing the concerns of the clients and providers in the industry I came up with a solution to solve 2 gaps in the market.

    The problems:

1- People where having trouble finding real estate that fit both their pockets and their life styles (this seems to be a problem worldwide)

2- The real estate industry is a bit archaic in Brazil and has almost no reliable Big Data solutions, such as lead qualification and project validation for instance. I can go into more details and examples but it seems counterproductive to over specify here, can answer more in comments. (Given several constraints I can only validate this problem locally/in Brasil)

The solution: I created a new algorithm that I put in a real estate site. With it the buyer/user has the added option of searching based on lifestyle, such as:

**I want a house, for up to 2k a month that is 30 minutes away from my work (by car), up to 30 minutes away from my spouses college (by public transport) and 20 minutes away from my kid's school on foot.**

And the way we collect the data (we WOULD NOT save or store any personal data) and use it to model and sell data based consultancy for the companies operating in the real estate space.

So that is the differential and one of the revenue streams.

Since I already worked in the real estate market I took a deep dive and took jobs in almost every point of the pipeline (from building to selling) and conducted interviews with both clients and other professionals over the course of almost 18 months.

The code, according to programmers and developers I quoted with, would prove quite expensive to develop and run, so I focused on working to accumulate the required capital . (more details in comments if needed)

As luck would have it a friend of mine who graduated from CS and had great work experience as a CTO in other companies was starting a Venture Builder with some colleagues and chose my idea for the first batch. I was over the moon.

But as soon as the MVP is online and I try to get the first paying costumers things started to get confusing.

I managed to get people to the website but they seem to not want to search, less than 5% of the people that landed on the page actually made a search with the new ad graphics. I thought perhaps the fact that the additional search option was novel was maybe what was causing confusion and therefore the low ratio, so I made new ad graphics that explained it better, but to no avail.

I managed to get partnerships with some of the biggest names in the industry, I get access to their database and they get the data analysis service for a greatly discounted value and the ad service for free for a period of 6 months. But when I try to sell it to other people and smaller companies they claim they do not want to pay since the website, in their view, is not ready and our marketing budget is low to say the least.

When we try to go to investors to beef up our marketing efforts to the level the clients might not object the investors either want 60% of the company or say they do not want to clash with the older outlets and companies.

Followup interviews leads to the same problems in the market and a verbal validation of our solution. But user performance and cash-flow still go against us.

Is it time for a pivot or am I doing something wrong?

Who has raised investments via AngelList here?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:48 AM PDT

Guys, I want to study AngelList's current traction from startups' perspective. Therefore I'm looking for founders who have participated in AL syndicates and can share their real experience about the process.

I've seen so many posts on this topic the internet, but use cases are 5 years old, and the rest seem to be more of the marketing aspect. I want to find founders who have done it more or less recently (during the last 2 years). If you did, can you please share your case & experience?

I want to quit even before the company starts operating

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT

I launched the "coming soon" website for my company about 3 weeks ago and it's been a roller coaster since. I've received numerous feedback from different advertisements that I've run and also from customer research surveys that has made me realize THERE'S SO MUCH I DON'T KNOW about running a successful business and what the heck I'm i doing??

My major anxiety that's making me want to quit is that there's a lot of work that needs to be done to make the business start operating. A lot of work is what's turning me off I think.

In an ideal world I just want to program and design beautiful web application experiences. The details of the non programming side of the business are exhausting and I just don't know how to continue anymore. I'm a sole founder, what advice would you have for navigating this period? How do people keep going?

    Free MVP?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:56 PM PDT

Currently in the MVP stage of building a marketplace business/app, but I'm not sure if making it free would actually make a difference in getting initial users. I was considering a 5-10% commission to offset the costs we will be incurring, but i really want to work very closely with my users and I feel like asking them to essentially help me build the app and also pay me is a bit much to ask.

what are your thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated.

How does one go about finding other people to help build a product/tool/app?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 03:55 PM PDT

I know this question is absurdly generic but for the life of me I can't figure this out.

When it comes to doing something on my own, I have no problem motivating myself. But the moment I need to bring someone in to help me out with something, it all falls short.

And I have no idea why.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

    Bringing on a design/branding co-founder.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:13 PM PDT

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Is bringing on a designer/branding person as an equity holding founder a done thing?

    Background:
I run a startup which has some fairly good traction, a solid and growing user base, and I'm slowly starting to expand the team by bringing some people in fundamentally important roles on as equity holding founders, to improve the product and start scaling.
Our industry (the service/Food & Bev space) relies quite heavily on design and branding, and social media. Proper branding can run into the thousands of $, and as it's really not something we can afford to pay for outright, or on-going (bootstrapped) at this stage.

As social media is proving to be a great channel for us for customer acquisitions, and presentation is seeming more and more important, I was thinking about offering an experienced designer/branding expert a small slice of equity to come on as a co-founder, to formalise and grow our branding, and to manage, plan and direct our social media presence. I'd like this person to eventually move into a leadership role, running our branding, design and social media.

I'm familiar with people building their team with tech/biz dev co-founders, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience bringing someone on in this sort role as an equity holding founder, rather than paying a contractor/freelancer.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

A book that goes through the process of getting to know a certain industry without being physically in that country?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:11 PM PDT

I'm interested in reading a book/journey of someone who built his own startup and he started with getting to know very well the telecom/banking/e-commerce/RANDOM industry and people in that industry which led him to serve that industry with his product/services.

Also, the catch is that this story shouldn't entail any networking on local premises, only virtual.

Making the leap from F100 to startup. Would love to hear personal anecdotes/advice?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:11 PM PDT

I'm about to receive an offer from a startup and really excited. They'd be paying me 45% more than what I'm making now + equity, with a seemingly high ceiling for growth, would allow me to change industries, and seems like a great culture be in.

I graduated college in 2018, and have been working at a F100 company for the past 2 years and am told that I'm about to be promoted. But I don't like the people or the work or the culture (it's not toxic...I just don't like it)- but I'm really good at my job.

I've made the pros and cons list of both and 90% sure that I'd accept the offer at this startup. My only concern, having worked at a large corp and top school that bred kids for corporate life, is the uncertainty around startup life. Will it even be around in a year? Will it secure more funding? What if my division gets downsized? What do career exit opps look like? What happens to my job if the company is acquired? What does recruiting look like afterwards? What if I don't do a good job?

Whereas as sticking with 'the devil I know', I can be sure of certain things. I know I'll be promoted soon, that the name is reputable on my resume, that it is a leader in my industry, that I can manage the work, that I'm good at it.

I'm sure these are mostly typical woes of young 20 something and something that comes up often for those taking the leap from large corps to startups, but anyone have any advice/words of wisdom? How can I make the most of this opportunity? I'd love to hear from people's personal experiences.

For context, the company is series C and <$50 M in funding, I'd be joining as employee #150.

I feel like my original business name has pigeonholed me and now I want to change it. Would this be a mistake?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:16 AM PDT

So originally when I first established my company it only specialized in one thing, oil changes. But now as my customer base grows, I'm finding my area of expertise needs to be more general, as it stands I'm being pigeonholed by my current name. As a result, I'm finding my original name of The Fake Name to be less effective and I'm needing to transition my name to match what I do so that it's easier for customers to identify.

My problem is the name I want to use, is associated with an Indian based company, and is the first thing that populates in a search through Google. They aren't doing business anymore it seems but it's still problematic because that could cause branding issues. Additionally, if customers type in just FakeName for example, instead of TheFakeName, it translates to a different website altogether. Am I better of just leaving my name as is or am I just overthinking it?

As it stands, I know my original name eventually will not be enough in the big picture.

LLC Annual Tax Fee in California Payment Date

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I started a single member LLC in California this year, a couple of months ago. There is an annual tax of $800 for all LLCs in Cali. Do I need to pay that fee this year, or will the first payment be next year? Also, since it's a single member LLC, am I correct in assuming that I don't need to do estimated tax forms? I'm totally new to this world, don't know how taxes work for businesses. I don't know if it's worth getting a CPA just to fill out the annual fee, or if I should just wait to get one when it's time to do my personal taxes next year.

How to get preoreders on my SaaS?

Currently I have designed and planned out a productivity app that I am hoping to create but I wanted to get some preorders first as proof of concept and to provide a little bit of funding. How would one go about trying to get preorder? Where should I contact people? Should I sell at a discounted price? What should I do?

If you were to bootstrap a social network from scratch, how would you go about it?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    Hi all,

So I've been wanting to start a niche social network for a while now. I was on one for a while and it was really popular, however it seems the developer quit because the site has gone to shit, doesn't work and is infested with bots. Long story short, I have proof of concept and an open market.

My problem is, I have absolutely no idea where to start, mainly because of information overload. There's about a million ways I could start and a million more ways I shouldn't.

To add fuel to the flame, I have to bootstrap the entire thing because poor, and on top of that I have no hard technical skills to program the thing (was think of starting with WordPress until the ball gets rolling and I can customize it a bit more with help).

I was hoping some of you could enliven me with a bit of inspiration and guidance on how you would go about getting started if you were me, because I really don't know how or where to take the first step and it's frustrating as shit.

    Thanks :)

Have a MVP but not finding enough users to test. Advice? How have you done it?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:30 PM PDT

r/startups - I have a MVP but don't know where to find enough users to test for product market fit. I've been doing it the slow way of reaching out to people 1:1 but it's taking too long (1 user every couple of days). Places like Reddit and FB groups don't want people advertising (which I get). How have you found enough users couple per day to test your product?

Or is it just time to spend some money on advertising?

    Setting Commission for affiliated businesses

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:46 PM PDT

Hi! I'm starting a manufacturing business with 3D printers and have started to work with local businesses to buy products both for their staff and customers. I want to offer both straight sales and commission based sales to help them trust my brand and the interest in products. I'm not sure how to go about setting the commission percentages for the business to keep in those situations. I've included a few key details below. I'm new to this method of doing business and have been selling as a more traditional hard goods business with discounts for referrals. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking somewhere between 10-20% commission for the business.

The items themselves will be priced in the 5-10$ range with deals for buying more or in bulk

The items will be branded with the business logo (is this a pro for a lower or higher commission?)

My production costs are well managed and can facilitate a higher commission if its needed to get the account.

How have you dealt with jealousy?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I've been doing startup life for about 8 years, working my grind pretty hard to become an national expert in a niche in the last 5 years. Business is good, we're breaking even and going up market. Getting some unsolicited interest for investment.

The first couple of years I was a huge networker, trying to find my tribe. Now I'm really heads down on my own thing. Periodically someone will pop up from the past, assuming I'm still a newb... then get really bent out of shape when I don't have time for their get rich quick schemes.

I try to be kind, and when they ask for feedback I ask a couple gentle questions about logistics or legal jurisdiction. But It seems like they want me to be relentlessly validating and enthusiastic like I was 8 years ago... and they throw a tantrum when I'm not dazzled. But maturity has sunk in, I'm a veteran of the trenches now.

Then they get huffy with me. I literally had an old friend say it's "laughable that I would be an expert". I know that I am by all metrics, they are just jealous that I've lapped them.

I have nothing to prove to them but this kind of noise ruins my day. I hate taking the time to catch up with someone just to deal with their insecure tantrum.

I'm just don't have the time or the bandwidth to fawn over a scheme from a guy that has been living in his car and had a bad breakup with his last 5 co-founders. If it's that great just show me later AFTER it works. Even if you personally neg $500k... you could have done that with a day job for the last 5 years!

Share some thoughts/ experiences? Have any of you had this? How do you deal?

Sorry to vent, it's just a weird place to be at when I feel like people take swipes at me for being competent.

    Update: removed a sentence.
