Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:52 PM PDT long story short: I'm going into grad school, with a full ride for the first whole year. I got an email out of nowhere a few weeks back saying that "my loan had been approved" through my university, and then a few days later I got $6600 deposited directly into my bank account. confused, I call my school's financial aid office, and they told me that a loan for around $10,000 had been taken out by me to cover "costs" related to grad school. $3400ish supposedly went towards the health insurance coverage (which I had planned on opting out of, but had not completed the opt out process yet), while the rest was given directly to me as cash. when I asked where the loan came from, the fin aid office person told me that I had completed the entrance counseling and signed the promissory note on July 25th 2020. I never signed anything, nor did I ever complete entrance counseling. Why tf would I do that if I don't have any costs to cover? I can still cancel the loan, and things will be fine for me personally. But the fact that $10,000 was so casually added to my student loan balance without me ever giving explicit consent to it is extremely sketchy to me. I took out loans before, but that was for undergrad. is it possible that entrance counseling/promissory note signing for undergrad loans is considered consent for taking out grad school loans 2 years later? even if I never requested no even inquired about the $10,000 loan to begin with? I'm want to reach out to a student loan lawyer before doing anything for a free consultation, but I figured I'd ask here first to see what people have to say. edit: also, this extra $10,000 does not appear in my studentloan.gov profile, only on Navient [link] [comments] |
Using Cares Act 401k Distribution to pay off / down student loans Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:01 AM PDT I have been very tempted to raid my 401k, using the Cares Act Provisions, to finally get rid of all (most) of my student loan debt. I owe about 120K and could pay off 90K if i took the full distribution. Given that they are allowing distributions without penalty, would this be a terrible idea? I know it would set me back tremendously in my retirement savings...but i would also gain about 1500 a month in income and a boat load in interest savings, which i could feasibly use to replenish the retirement savings over time. Someone who is smarter than me please set me straight here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:30 PM PDT Just like the title says , after years of waiting , my defense application of course was denied. I have been taking advantage of the 0% interest. 23k left which I definitely know is a heck of a lot cheaper than most. Does anyone use any apps or anything to help pay down their loans ? I'm about ready to start an onlyfans page 😂 [link] [comments] |
Can't stop thinking about my student loan debt Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:55 PM PDT Total loans: 65,000 usd. I'm a 22 year old Computer Science graduate student currently in my last semester. I will be graduating in December and I'm extremely paranoid about not getting a job - due to the COVID situation. I did an internship which paid me about 24,000 usd but I had to pay about 18,000 usd towards my college tuition. I feel like my college is a black hole which sucks any form of money I rarely make. I work part time as Research Assistant in one of the university labs. By the time I complete my degree I would have about 10,000 usd from all the savings that I've been doing. I'm frantically applying to jobs, studying for interviews and doing everything I can right now. I can only sleep for 5 hours because of debt anxiety, which is not bad as I use as much hours as I can to study. My Dad cosigned my loan, but he already has a lot of issues with his business lately due to COVID, so I can't ask for any kinda of help from my parents. My parents warned me about the loans, but I felt like I could somehow make a better situation for my life if I did that graduate degree. Also I was the one that wanted to be independent, it is against my very being to rely on my parents for any kinda financial help. I want to take responsibility for my mistakes and pay this damn debt. But I'm constantly thinking about the worst case scenarios - being unemployed, becoming drowned it debt, also since my Dad cosigned the loan I'm worried about my parent's as well. I'm sorry for this long post, I kinda want to get this off my head. I can't really talk to anyone about this. [link] [comments] |
Removing late payments from Student Loans Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:41 PM PDT Hi, I have two federal student loan accounts that are showing 2 subsequent late payments each from earlier this year. Both accounts are current at this time. The first has a balance of ~$28k, and the other is about $800. I am looking for a little advice on how to get these late payments cleaned up on my otherwise spotless credit profile. My thoughts are to ask the loan servicer to stop reporting these late payments to the bureau via offering to pay in full the smaller loan and ask them to stop showing all four of the late payments. Does anyone have any experience in success in this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:29 PM PDT As the title states, I was renewing my IDR certification, as my cycle was some time around April. I completed my paperwork and received the notice stating that my new payment would be calculated at the end of my final billing cycle (May I believe). The CARES Act occurred and I received notification that it would be recalculated some time in October(I'm assuming when Cares was slated to expire). I just logged in and saw that my recertification expired. The notification stated they needed additional information. I never received a request, or saw a request on the FedLoan website. Anyone with insight or had something similar happen? [link] [comments] |
Student Loan Forgiveness due to Mental Illness? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:09 PM PDT Does anyone know how the process would work for applying for forgiveness of private loans due to mental illness? I.e., the person didn't even get to finish their degree, hasn't been able to work, etc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:04 PM PDT Good companies to refinance my shit ass sallie mae loans with? I have 40k in debt with them. My interest rate is 9.2%. What's your experience with refinancing high amounts? What's your interest rate & what company did you use? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:48 PM PDT Has anyone ever used one of those roundup type apps that helps put small amounts of money towards student loans? I currently use Acorns and Stash and have heard there are ones for student loans. I get torn about these apps there are so many pros and cons. i feel like I prob should close all these accounts down and send all that money to my student loans. But at the same time it's kind of fun to see the amounts in these accounts grow. [link] [comments] |
Canada Student Loans (I'm financially inadequate so please help) Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:41 PM PDT If my estimated awards for loans/grants is around 18000 and my university payment table thing (I have no idea what it's called) is only saying it'll cost 16000 what happens to the extra 2000? Will I get that to put towards my textbooks and study material? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:15 AM PDT I need to take out a private student loan for my last semester of school for about $20,000. I have never applied for a private student loan and am looking for credible lenders. Can anyone offer recommendations, advice for this process, and experience? thanks [link] [comments] |
Satisfactory Academic Process (SAP) Appeal Form Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:40 AM PDT This semester I wasn't given financial aid by my institution due to the fact that I have exceeded the maximum attempted hours for degree completion. The appeal form requires me to extensively explain the circumstances and also an explanation of "what has changed or is changing in order for me to meet SAP standards and complete my degree". To the latter I do not know what to write, if it is a fact that I have exceed the maximum hours allowed, how am I suppose to "change" this??? To the former, I am a transfer student that went through several change of mayors in a no name college. I took a bunch of credits that didn't count towards my major, prob a bunch for general prereqs, but other than the prereqs there's a bunch of credits that are just extra to the degree I am about to complete (3 semesters left for graduation). Has anyone else been in this position? How was the process? What are the chances of receiving my Finaid back? What else should I explain other than what I've mentioned? Thank you in advance. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:57 AM PDT My original financial aid package said I got $3,500 subsidized, and $2,000 unsubsidized loans. However, after that, I asked for a review for financial aid in about April and I got an additional $6,000 in scholarship money. Based on that information, I committed to going to that school, and have done all the stuff needed for that. However, this morning, I received an email from my school saying that they forgot to let me know that when they gave me the additional $6,000, they needed to change all my loans to be unsubsidized. So I'm upset, because I committed expecting to be working with the other set of numbers and now they're just changing it on me at the last minute. Are they allowed to do that? Is there anything I can do? [link] [comments] |
Can I pay back the parent plus loan now and have the interest and have origination fees waived off? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:15 AM PDT So my parent plus loan was just dispersed and my parents realized that they can pay the loan back already. I was wondering if they payed it back after like a month does the interest and origination fees get waived off? And if so how much time do I have to pay it and have the interest and origination fees waived off. I think it's 120 days but I'm not sure? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT So I decided that online college first semester isn't going to work for me with other life things I have going on. I dropped out of my program and declined the loan I had previously accepted before the first day of classes. I do want to attend next semester though to a (potentially different) graduate program. Is me denying the loan going to have an effect on this? [link] [comments] |
Recertification of IDR during Cares Act and Extension Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:39 AM PDT Are we still expected to recertify our IDR? I remember something saying not until after the Cares Act was done, but with its extension when are we expected to recertify? I was given an auto reminder message from FedLoan but not sure if that was a mistake. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:38 AM PDT PLEASE HELP ME! I'm an Indian and want to study in canada. I applied for a PG Diploma course in Seneca college. The tuition fee for international student there is 15000 CAD. Being a international student I don't only have to pay the tuition fee but also 10000CAD GIC. So total becomes 25000CAD. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:06 AM PDT Hey guys! This is my first semester with loans. I accepted my federal loans and started classes last week. Today I received and email stating I was being put into a payment plan for over $6,000. It still shows my loans being accepted but not paid. I checked the student aid website and it doesn't have my MPN on file. I thought I did it but apparently not! I just did it and I saw it takes 24 hrs but I'm concerned I will not receive the loans. Tomorrow is the last day to drop classes without a withdrawal and I'm really upset. Anyone know if it'll be ok? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Should I avoid student loans at all costs? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT I am a senior in high school and currently applying to colleges. I have 30+ college credits from AP exams, so I hope and plan to graduate in 3 years. I'm applying to 18 colleges (don't need your opinion if you think this is too much). With the exception of four schools on my list, most of them will probably require me to take out $20K-$35K a year to pay for school. Assuming I graduate in three years, that would be $60K - $105K. I would be graduating from a Top 50 (ex. SMU or U Miami) if not a Top 20 (ex. UVA or Wake Forest) college. My parents said they would help me as much as possible after graduation, and realistically, they MIGHT be able to help me with around $25K, so now my debt is left between $35K and $80K. I plan to major in finance and my starting salary should be around $70K. I hope to break six figures after I have some years of experience, and at the height of my career (when I'm 40+), I hope to make at least $200K. I also plan to buy a house (at least $1M+), send my kids to private school, take lots of family trips... you get the idea. If my loan term is five years with an average interest rate of 6% (using Bankrate's calculator), my monthly payment for a debt of $35K - $80K will be $677 - $1546. If I do make $70K starting salary, my debt payment would be between 11% and 27% of my monthly income before taxes. I know how to budget and would be okay with living SOMEWHAT frugally for five years. If I paid off this debt in five years, how much would it affect me in my financial future? Should I avoid student loans at all costs and only stick to the schools I can afford without any loans? Or is my plan reasonable? [link] [comments] |
Is it too late to apply for FAFSA? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:35 AM PDT I'm applying so I can receive a scholarship from my school. But I literally start next week. [link] [comments] |
Should I take the full loan amount or only what I need for my situation? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT I was approved for a $20,500 loan but only need $13,000 for my Fall and Spring semesters. However I will need $10,000 for Summer. Should I keep the full amount and put the remaining $7,500 towards summer and then pay the last bit out of pocket? Or should pay back what I don't need for Fall and Spring and then apply for a new loan for the Summer semester for $10,000? Does it not matter regardless or will I save interest wise by only pulling what I need?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:49 AM PDT Hi everyone. New account here. So I think I might have received parent plus loan about 3 years ago. But I'm not exactly sure where to search for the balance. Does it show up on my Fedloan accounts and thus I can see the balance and make payments to it? [link] [comments] |
