How do people manage a company with more than, say 5,000 people?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:25 AM PDT

5,000 is just a random number.

What I'm curious is that how do people manage when a company has many many people. Like 5000 or even 10,000 people. How does that even work?

Certain there are middle managements and upper-level management. But sometimes it's hard to imagine a board of 10ish people plus the CEO can manage a company of so many people. How does this even happen?

Are there any characteristics when management number reach a certain threshold?

    i.e. 0 - 15 16 - 30 31 - 50 50 - 100 100 - 300 etc.

Where is appropriate to draw the line to tell the difference?

What are some kind of management methods and tools/charts that keep track of all the things? Like, do they have a system that keep tracks of things?

    Thanks for all the answers!

What business would you start if you were one of the first settlers on Mars? Why?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:19 PM PDT

As the title says, year is 2100, what commercial business would you start if you were one of the first settlers on Mars? Why?

This is a semi-serious question so please try to give a serious answer :) Ideas that are built upon entrepreneurship would be great.

I think mine would be a service that would allow sending delivery packages to Earth.

    Is this how networking works?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:43 PM PDT

My friend is a recent VP at a local ASME group. He was replaced without explanation this year. I hit him up, said I was looking to get involved in a leadership position at ASME. Basically, he gave me the number of the new president at the club. He said he would recommend me, and tell her I have ideas for the transition online during COVID.

My issue is, I have no ideas for going online. Is this how getting a leadership position usually works? Should I lie and try to make stuff up before potentially getting the role?

I do not think it's a huge deal, this is just thru my college, but I want to know if this is how people get good roles or if he's being a bit unorthodox?

Best financing options to buy out a smallish business

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Me and a partner are looking to buyout a business that is looking to sell, he is currently running the company and the owners are looking to sell it, from what I've gathered the best option for us to purchase the company would be to to a leveraged buyout based on the assets of the company as this allows us to leverage the company we're buying instead of our own assets. My question is this, is an lbo the best option for people who know the business but don't have the assets required for an outright purchase? And second what are some of the better investment lenders that I should get in touch with to start this process?

    Making $1,000 a month

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:44 PM PDT

Basically, I have some huge aspirations in a field of sports that gets pricey. I've been training consistently and have dedicated any moment I can to training; when I'm not, I'm researching it. I'm willing to do and plan on doing whatever it takes to be successful, but with training so often I won't be able to have a job and train enough at the same time. I have calculated some things, and realized that I can train and survive off $1,000 a month, so this is my goal. I have $1,000 saved up to work with, and have $100 a month passively from a source I can't disclose. I'm willing to invest any of it, and I'm willing to do any work as long as it's not a job with set hours, as that just won't work with my schedule. I know passive income isn't actually passive income and I'm okay with that. Any suggestions?

[Question] How to handle a major customer harassing my employee?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:38 AM PDT

A major customer keeps calling my head of sales on her personal phone, masking inappropriate questions and comments with random business small talk. He asks if she's married, where she lives, calls her back to back on weekends and if he cant get her he calls the office phone for her etc.. shit you don't do in a professional environment. He's a known 'player' kind of guy.

On one hand i'd like to tell him to go fuck himself and break all ties with him. But we need him, i dont have anyone else that can deal with him, and im swamped myself and its alot of work dealing with this guy's orders. My employee seems to be dealing with it alright for now but she is complaining and i care about her so i want this stop.

Is there anything i can do?

Do companies like HBO and Disney have their own "Netflix team" or "internal Netflix" for HBO Max and Disney Plus? Do they have an equivalent of Open Connect or another tech stack?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Netflix has an entire tech blog so you can see what they do. Does HBO have an internal Netflix like engineering team for HBO Plus? Does Disney? Do they poach engineers from Netflix itself?

    A business idea

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT

I have what I believe to be a unique idea. It does involve designing a website and an app. I would then need to convince people to sign up. The concept is similar to Airbnb but instead of places to stay, it would be certain services that self employed/freelancers offer - without going into too much detail! So basically, the website and the app would bring together the client and the freelancer. I already have experience in the industry that I would like this to be in (just over three years). I looked around and I can't see anything like this has been done before and I can genuinely see this as being revolutionary and changing the industry for good but I have no idea where to start from and what to do! I am only 25 so I have lack of experience in the running of my own business department. I have no idea how to go about it all and I come from a working class background so I don't have parents that can help or guide me! All I know is that this is a good idea. It may or may not work but if someone else beats me to it, I'd kick myself for the rest of my life. Any tips?
