Roommate borrowed my car, committed a hit and run and then left the state Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:09 PM PDT Hi guys. So I let my roommate borrow my car because he said he had a doctors appointment that was urgent. I would've offered to take him, but I was occupied with something else. I trusted him to take the car and bring it back safely seeing that his doctor is only a 10 minute drive from my house. A couple hours pass and the cops show up at my door explaining that he rear ended a car and took off (there's video footage that proves it) and asking for the person who was driving my car. I told them it was my roommate and at first he didn't want to admit he did it, but he finally came clean. My roommate promised that he would pay me back for the damages but took off a few days later. He left the state without caring to let me know. It's been a month and I'm assuming he moved back to his home state with his family. He never told me he was moving, didn't say bye, thank you or anything. Now he's ignoring my calls and texts. My insurance covered the damages on the victims car, but I have to pay out of pocket for my car damages because I don't want my insurance to go up. I want to make sure he doesn't get away with this though. My question is what do I do now? Can I file a police report or sue him? I'm thinking of taking him to small claims court. I'm in California btw. [link] [comments] |
Help Understanding COBRA please! Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:41 PM PDT Hey folks, I read through a couple posts and the info my previous employer sent me, I just need a sounding board to know if I'm right or not. I am starting a new job and that new health insurance does not kick in until Oct 1. My previous job had insurance that expires Aug 31st (tomorrow). I have to go all of September without employer sponsored health insurance. From the paperwork from the old company, I understand that through COBRA I can elect to continue that health coverage on my own by paying basically all of the monthly premium that my former employer was previously subsidizing. To use the words from another post, that monthly amount is truly eye popping. Just an insane amount of money. I only need to go 1 month w/out coverage. I have 60 days from the notice I received to opt into COBRA and then pay the premiums. I understand that after opting in and paying, the coverage will be retroactive back to Sept 1, the day after my last company sponsored coverage expires. Here's where I need validation: I can take NO ACTION at all, and as long as I don't need medical treatment in Sept, I should be able to just wait until Oct 1 when the new insurance kicks in. If I do need medical attention in Sept, I can seek out whatever medical attention I need, and then evaluate after I get treated and see a bill. If the total cost is less than the monthly premium (+ copay/deductible/whatever) for COBRA, I could pay that total cost out-of-pocket and not opt into COBRA. Otherwise, I could then Opt in for COBRA as a cheaper option (or some Marketplace insurance that is better than extended my previous plan)..... right? Basically, do nothing and reassess if someone gets sick. I have a couple very young infants, so I don't want to screw myself if any of them get sick. If I get sick, I'll tough it out (or they can claim the life insurance on me that isn't expiring), but I worry about making sure everyone in the family is covered. We mapped it out and all the routine visits can be pushed out until October. So as long as we stay healthy, I think we can save some money for September, but worse case scenario I should be able to retroactively opt in with COBRA. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
American Car in an International Accident Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:09 AM PDT BLUF: Have a RAM 1500 and was in an accident in Korea. Claim is being coded as me not at fault but I'm still being required to pay my deductible.
Any help or advice with the above questions will be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:29 PM PDT An Associate of Commercial Underwriting (AU) designation takes 9-15 months to complete and the underwriters that I have spoken to mentioned that AI is really starting to take care of most of the simple cases making it tough to emerge in to underwriting unless you already have experience. Is it worth obtaining the AU if I don't already have underwriting experience? I work for an Insurance company, but on the Group Retirement/Financial Services side of the business in operations. Looking for any advice. Edit: I'm located in Houston, TX [link] [comments] |
Car accident settlement amount Posted: 30 Aug 2020 09:20 PM PDT I was in a car accident about 6 months ago (Texas), the other driver was at fault. My car was not damaged too badly but the impact was large. Instead of paying for my chiropractor, the adjuster wants to offer a settlement. He said he would start at $500 and was willing to negotiate. How much should I expect/try to get? [link] [comments] |
Insuring a house in New York with a bad roof Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:24 PM PDT I have inherited a house that's 100% paid off, there is no mortgage. Unfortunately the the roof is beyond repair and requires a tear off but I don't have funds to pay out of pocket for it. I would like a home equity loan but cannot get one because there is no insurance on the house due to the state of the roof. I feel like I'm in a loop, can't fix the roof with out insurance, can't get insurance without fixing the roof. I've called a bunch of agents and companies but no one will insure with out the roof and no one will underwrite the home equity loan with out it. Any advice on getting the most basic insurance to get a loan? Obviously one the roof is fixed I will get a normal HO3. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 09:58 PM PDT This question is for Nevada 2 weeks ago I bought a new 2020 Toytota Tacoma access cab for 33k financed. It had 150 miles on it when I bought it. I got 500 miles on it, got t-boned from the right side, and this bent the frame, damaged the 2 right doors/cab, front right fender, rear right fender, front axle, and set off the airbags. The other driver admitted fault and was ticketed for it if that changes anything. I'm fairly sure this will total it, but I haven't been told yet, and I still have questions either way. I had GAP insurance, and full collision from USAA, but no Car Replacement Assistance. Tomorrow they're checking out the truck, and they'll let me know what the plan is then I guess. I want to know, if it does get totaled, how much am I likely to get out of it? I know I won't have to pay off the remainder of the loan at the very least because of the GAP, but will I get enough to put another 4k down for the same truck again? I would think the truck would be treated as essentially new, and used prices for these trucks are pretty insane to me. If I get enough back from the value of the truck that GAP is not activated, am I able to refund it (I didn't think I could on this but someone mentioned I might be able to within 30 days of buying the truck). I also have some accessories for the truck at the dealership paid for with the initial loan, but they were never installed on the truck. What happens with these if the truck is totaled? If the truck is not totaled and they do repair it, people have mentioned a depreciated value claim. What is this, should I request it, and how would I request it? Is there anything else I need to know about having a new vehicle going into this? I've only ever dealt with insurance for cheap 20 year old cars that are worth $600. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 09:36 PM PDT I got a phone call from my ex wife on Friday that her car had been stolen. She was distraught and didn't make it clear where. She couldn't talk between the crying. I told her to cool off and call me back while I called the insurance company. I called the insurance company and told them the car was stolen. I didn't know where at the time, but she was in the San Diego area so I said that. She calls me back and I am told she visited family in Tijuana and it was stolen over night while she stayed over with her sister. I have Progressive and from what I can tell it doesn't cover Mexico. What do I do now? I tried to call them this weekend to let them know, but the agent was off until Monday. I am calling tomorrow. I want the car back to be honest because it's almost paid off. I have no idea if they can help me with that. I have no idea what to say. I am just lost here to be honest. Let me know what to do and say. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:17 PM PDT So I got into a car accident, or rather I got rear-ended. I have the state minimum for car insurance. I bought my car less than 2 weeks ago and am yet to pay registration fees for the title. THe car now however is more expensive to fix then it is worth. If i wanted to sell the car would I need to still pay for the registration fees? Or could I just sell the car to a scrapyard without paying the fees? I've already paid for the car in cash. Debris from unsecured load caused accident Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:10 PM PDT I was driving down a fairly busy road just about to cross over an overpass in my work van. There was a suv hauling a trailer of junk which was poorly secured. Debris flew out of the trailer onto the road way. Speed limit 70 km/hr. The Cadillac driver in front of me came to a complete sudden stop. I slammed my brakes on but was sliding to fast and veared into left lane to avoid collision but clipped left rear end of cadillac. The driver of trailer pulled over and stayed at scene as did I and Cadillac driver. Police had everyone fill out report and ticketed driver with trailer also made him un-hitch because load was to unsecured and needed more strapping before being hauled away. Who is likely at fault in this type of situation? This happened in Calgary, Alberta, Canada [link] [comments] |
Insurance salesmen/saleswomen, what's your job like? Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:08 PM PDT I work at a Farmers agency doing sales. I do cold calling, some administrative work, and other tasks to increase sales. The head agent buys me leads and I do the rest of the sales work. I didn't have much training that was helpful, so I learned most the stuff I know on my own. I'm making minimum wage + $50 commission rn. It's really hard to get sales so I'm not making that much, and I'm only given 23.5 hours a week. I'm curious where all you insurance salespeople are at. Did you get good training, do you buy your own leads, what are you making, and do you get sufficient hours? Let me know what your job is like. [link] [comments] |
Insurance premium if other driver causes accident Posted: 30 Aug 2020 06:52 PM PDT I have two drivers in my insurance (me and another). The other driver got into an accident. If we make a claim, and insurance premium goes up, will it remain that high even if I remove the driver from insurance in the future? In California. [link] [comments] |
How does insuring a car I don’t own yet work? Posted: 30 Aug 2020 05:38 AM PDT I have my own car which has coverage. However my sister gave me her van since she doesn't use it anymore and it's not worth it. Due to covid the DMV is by appointment only, and it's awhile until we can get in. I want to clean out the garage but to do that I need to be able to drive the van. I'm wondering how insurance would work in this scenario. The van will end up in my little brothers name, but he also does not have his license yet. Idk if that'll make a difference. Oh, I'm in Oregon if that matters. [link] [comments] |
Any way to contact Blue Shield of CA in writing? Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:09 PM PDT Hey everyone! I was just wondering if any of you know how to reach Blue Shield of CA customer service through email or chat, or if that's even possible. I have an appointment with a specialist that is listed on the website as in-network for my specific plan. The entire medical group this doctor belongs to is also listed as in-network for me. When I made my appointment with them, I followed a link on their website to their zocdoc.com booking page which then said they were not in network for me. I figured it would be more likely that the third party site was outdated or wrong than the blueshield website, but I'd like to cover my bases if that's not right. I have screenshots of the doctor and medical group being shown as in-network for the site, and I plan on at least calling blue shield to ask, but does anyone know if there's any way to contact them in writing over this? I feel like I've scoured the website and haven't been to find anything. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Minor Car Collision with my learners License Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:22 PM PDT I was involved in a very minor car wreck about a year ago while I still had my my learners license where the damage on both cars was very minimal. I would also like to add that the car in question I was driving was not mine. I am currently being added to my parents car insurance and i'm wondering how that is going to affect their insurance if at all? Edit: this happened in yellowknife, NT, Canada [link] [comments] |
Will this raise rates / count as an accident? Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:21 PM PDT Had a brief run in with a curb and popped two tires, ended up on a sidewalk. I have usaa insurance with towing. I opted for my own tow truck just in case they would view this as an accident (no other damage besides tires). Notes on the receipt 'winch our from curb damage tire bumper'. I'm guessing the best choice is to eat the $200 tow fee and not submit a claim for reimbursement. Any thoughts on this? Edit, this is in California [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:32 PM PDT Evening all, just a little advice before I call the Insurance co. in the morning. I'm a 30+ yr old guy, owned until yesterday a Subaru Legacy. Bought a Peugeot 407 as a replacement and contacted my insurance co. 1st central, to transfer insurance policy to new car AND add my missus on from today. Missus has 20+yrs clean licence/NCD. I blindly paid the money to change the insurance which was a tad over £100 plus admin fees as I needed use of the car today. But I've been told that I've been ripped off as insurance ought to have gone down. So my questions are, should I have expected to pay a little cheaper insurance over the year (2.5 litre Subaru down to a 2.0 litre Peugeot) and as I can't see it in the t&cs, now I have made an amendment to my policy, do I have the right to cancel the insurance within a certain time period or am I stuck with them for the next 10 months? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:12 PM PDT Hi all, I tried calling Geico several times to get some advice but I keep getting disconnected about 40 minutes into queue. I have a 2010 Honda Accord that I am looking to pass off to my brother in the next month or so. For the past few months I have only been driving it once a week around the garage just to make sure it still turns on. The policy needs to be renewed by 9/1. I have been working at home full time since March 2020 and am not expecting to return to the office until Jan 2021. Despite not really needing a vehicle currently, I have been casually looking around due to the incentives out right now. I am open to buying if a good deal turns up. So my first question is, do I need to renew the policy if it is just sitting in the garage for another month or so? He is coming over to get the car sometime in October. My second question: If i renew the policy, what happens if I pass the car to my brother and there are 2 months left in the policy? I know my brother has to get his own auto policy when he takes the car so would I be able to use the dollar value of the remaining 2 months on the auto policy for my next car? [link] [comments] |

Can pictures prove who was in the wrong? Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:12 PM PDT So my boyfriend and I were leaving taco bell and we saw 2 spots over 2 girls eating in their car, we thought ok they're not leaving yet, the car wasn't even on, so my boyfriend goes to back up, and hes turning when we collide with the 2 girls, as we were backing up and turning the one girl decided to back up. There was damage to the car, mostly scratches and some holes, that went through the paint. she was all apologetic saying she didn't mean to and all this, and that she was going to call her mom since shes just 16 and its her moms car. her attitude changed real quick, she started telling her mom how we were turning really hard, and we werent looking, how we backed up too far, and we hit her, she was just backing up straight. her mom demanded my info. which ok no problem, till I realized I had my insurance on my phone and not a print out but I explained it would take a few minutes to pull up. That pissed her mom off and she threatened to call the cops on me and to not let me escape and get away with it. When I suggested we not get the cops involved she told her mom on the phone "she's getting mad, I'm scared" well low and behold when I looked at the damage of my car, and there's red scratches. So I'm thinking there wouldn't be scratches if we just full on hit her right? The scratches are there because she was backing up right? I wish I got the cops involved and told them she's trying to pin this all on me but it was my first accident and I wasn't sure what all needed to happen. I filed a claim and am expecting a call from my insurance adjuster, will the pictures prove she played a part in this? Or does it not matter at this point? [link] [comments] |
I got into an accident in a rental Posted: 30 Aug 2020 08:18 AM PDT Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask a couple questions. I was driving on the highway yesterday when I got rear ended by a driver who couldnt break in time. I was driving a rental that was provided to me because my car got sideswiped and is in for repairs. The other driver admitted on the scene that it was his fault and that he was sorry. Im guessing im supposed to file an accident report at a collision center as well as notify my insurance and the rental company. Im just wondering if I will be on the hook for loss of use even though I am not at fault and if so, how much would the fees be? Would I also be losing my deposit even though im not at fault? Thanks in advance! Edit: This happened in Ontario Canada [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT I was charged with a dui in mid 2013 and convicted in 2015. This happened in NC and now I live in SC and I've done all the proper steps to get my license back. I've had my license for probably 3 years now but never needed to drive. My question is that if I get car insurance in SC will it pull my NC dui from 5 years ago and force me to get a SR22 or whatever it is? [link] [comments] |
Quick Question About Member ID as Dependant (BCBS) Posted: 30 Aug 2020 09:58 AM PDT My sister has a question about their insurance and hoping I can help her with that. Her husband is the policy holder of their health insurance. She's stay at home mom and doesn't have any other insurance. They're with BCBS through his husband's job and live in Arkansas. She's currently pregnant and went to ob/gyn for check-up. The receptionist asked for her insurance card. She has her own card and Member ID (let's say her ID is 0007), while her husband ID is 0006. Which member ID should she uses? The receptionist at ob said to use her own ID, while the lab (lab billed their own invoice separately) said to use her husband ID since she's the dependant and her husband is the subscriber/policy holder. Which one is correct? [link] [comments] |
