Finishing up the season of my businesses first year.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 03:29 PM PDT

I have about 9 days left of my businesses season. I graduated college about 2 years ago, started this business with $10,000 of initial capital.

Brought in gross revenues of $144,023

Going to have a net profit of about $74,000-$82,000.

Haven't really taken time out to appreciate the circumstances, but being 23 and having $31,000 in college debt, I'd say I've done okay and am happy with my decision not to go the traditional route. I've worked every day for the last 5 months but I'll be off for the next 5 too.

Entrepreneurship is a beautiful thing, but I've learned with this first year I need to take time for myself even if the business only operates 5/6 months out of the year.

    Cheers

Owners of restaurants in cold climates, what is your plan for the upcoming cold season with Covid-19?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:56 PM PDT

Many restaurants offer (and in many cases only offer) outdoor seating. With the upcoming cold season, what is your plan to keep restaurant-goers warm and safe? I see that article of the restaurant in Amsterdam putting up little greenhouses for each table; what is your plan?

Financing $100k equipment or save up cash to pay?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:46 AM PDT

My business needs to expand and acquire a set of equipment which comes to approximately $100k with installation. We could save up the cash within 4 years and delay the expansion until then, though I'm sure the price will marginally go up.

As a risk/debt adverse person, is it worth it to finance this equipment at 4.4% or wait and pay cash?

Starting an LLC just for the write off?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 09:50 AM PDT

I am a licensed engineer currently employed full time but interested in starting a side hustle doing consulting work that utilizes my degree and licensure. I am a civil/structural engineer living in a growing area where there is a lot of residential construction happening - I have over 10 years of experience, connections and industry knowledge to feel relatively confident I would secure small contracts - certainly not enough to quit my other job but enough to supplement my income with another $1k-$2k per month.

Beyond the extra money, I've heard that many of the business expenses I would have could be written off in taxes. I plan to operate the business out of my home and my only overhead fees would be in fees to maintain my licensure, professional liability insurance and some small costs for software/computers.

Do the itemized deductions Id plan to claim as business expenses work to reduce my taxable income on just the money brought in by my side business or on my total income (regular job + side work)?

Any input is much appreciated- I'm clearly just beginning to understand this all so any resources I can study would be great too.

    Hello,

I have invested in a friends small business, but he gives me no updates, I am pretty much out of the loop in every aspect. What rights do I have as a shareholder? Does he legally have to give me access to certain company material? can I ask him to see the balance sheets/bank account etc?

    Thanks

I need someone to read my business Idea and either brutally shoot me down, or give me a maybe it might work.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:40 PM PDT

I want to convince people to pay me to take away their old computers and electronics.

I would offer data wiping services because I'm aware that data security is a thing that people worry about.

I will attempt to reuse as much as possible from what I collect. What I can't reuse but is reusable I'll donate to places the repurpose old tech and recycle what I can't.

Shoot holes in this please. I know this market and I'm overly confident I can make this work If I get enough clients, but a big part of me feels like this isn't worth the attempt.

Also my brain keeps trying to angle how to market this. I keep going back to pushing data security, but also something something carbon footprint.

A business Idea. Good or Bad? (Texas)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:32 PM PDT

For the past four years, I have been working as a non-medical caregiver for 4 of my clients. Throughout the day while attending to their needs I had my a-ha moment. There are numerous companies in my city that are non-medical home-health companies. There are also companies that give the elderly rides and others that run errands.

I thought to myself if these companies specifically cater to the elderly a certain way why not have a company that calls them just to see how they were doing and have a conversation. To my surprise, there are companies like this that exist.

Does anyone know if I would need some kind of license or could I just start advertising let's say on craigslist? If anyone has experience in this kind of work, please chime in. The more information, the better.

Advice needed for UK Non-Resident.....Sole Trader or LTD company?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:00 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I hope you are all doing well.

I am a little confused about what kind of business to set up prior to starting my first ad campaign for my Shopify store.

I heard that by having a company, there is less chance of Facebook ad account bans and that it is the proper way to proceed.

My store is all set up (taken me months) and I have done all the FB Blueprint courses. I am using the standard Shopify payments + Paypal to start.

My situation is that I am from the UK but haven't lived there for a few years so I am therefore a non-resident. I am currently a "digital nomad" and travel from country to country.

The decision I am trying to make is whether to set up as a Sole Trader or whether to start a LTD company.

My current thinking is to keep things simple and start as a Sole Trader and when / if I make some money, to change to a LTD company but I need some input to decide please.

My main concerns are my liability if a product that I sell causes an issue to a customer and also they best way to keep my Facebook Business manager in good standing to avoid bans etc.

I would love your thoughts about this, especially from anyone that is also a non-resident in UK.

Thanks and hope you all have a great day.

(How much) would you pay for storage?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:41 AM PDT

I'm thinking about creating my own IT company, providing storage to other businesses. I could provide an infrastructure of lets say 5000 TB to your company exclusively.

    1) Would you pay for it? 2) How much?

Most cloud providers give 1TB per user for around $10/month as I've researched. My solution would be different than online cloud, I'd actually lend the infrastructure so it would be hosted in-house for the business, so it would be more secure.

Need tips-financial problems and possible closure from COVID

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:45 AM PDT

Hey redditors, so we own a family restaurant in town, and we rely on the restaurant business for money. However, one of the family members just got tested positive for covid, and it is likely that we all have it. We want to close the restaurant for a few days because we don't want to keep spreading it, but we do not have any other sort of income. I'm wondering if there's any sort of programs that could help our business-like rent reduction. We live in Iowa. I've searched up the SBA plans, but it I'm still confused by the terms. Any tips would help thank you.

    Business student seeking advice....

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:07 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

To the small business owners of this community that are looking to hire remotely or have already hired remotely, how has your experience been? What are the key challenges that you have faced? What are the key things you look for in potential employees?

I'm asking this to better understand the hiring process from the viewpoint of the employers.

Background: I'm a business student with professional experience in a range of roles(managing ops, admin tasks, business reports, logistics, coordination, etc, basically business-related functions.) I'm currently searching for remote opportunities and am trying to figure out the best way to approach this. Also, I'm trying to figure out the key things I should know/ pay attention to/ etc.

Also, where do you undertake most of your hiring activities?

Do you plan on participating in Trump's payroll tax deferral?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 06:35 AM PDT

Do you plan to stop withholding your employees' share of their FICA taxes? It seems like a bad deal for businesses because the employees will have to repay the deferred taxes next spring. If you have any employees who leave before then, you will be responsible for getting back the money from them. I'm going to opt out, but have to explain it to the employees this week.

[Here's a story about it.](cnn: Here's what the payroll tax deferral action means for you. https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/29/economy/trump-treasury-new-guidance-tax-holiday/index.html)

Our business is already gaining traction and we haven't even started setting it up yet. Help!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:43 PM PDT

Okay so I don't have any idea on starting a business. None at all. But they say when opportunity strikes, you gotta grab it. Well, opportunity struck and I grabbed it but now I don't know what to do with it.

I was given the responsibility to manage an online produce store. The caveat is I have to start it from the bottom up. And now, family and friends heard about it and have already started ordering stuff and I dont even have pricing for most of my items.

I wish there was a manual for these kinds of things.

I do have knowledge with business registrations and government compliance and I'm already on it but I dont have a single clue how to set up the logistics, the pricing, the business plan in general.

Any idea where I should start?

Experience hiring a friend to work in your business

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:09 AM PDT

I am to the point on one of my side products where I need to hire a full time employee. I was casually discussing this with a buddy of mine and he said he would be interested working for me. I honestly think he would be a good fit but I know there are pitfalls with this.

Anybody hire a friend to work in their business? Looking for the good, bad and ugly.

Getting serious about my business, looking to hire a specialist marketing consultant

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I run a music studio and am looking to increase my enquiries and onboarding. I've tried a few things already that seem to be working but know I can do better. To be honest, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the marketing process and would rather be teaching. I'm really eager to learn and work with someone. I've found a consultant that specifically works with my problem and in my field and had a successful meeting with them, I'm about to invest in their help. Never done anything like it before but I'm feeling excited about getting some actual help with my business. It's a bit of an investment but if it pays off, it'll be paid off by just hiring one student through their help. Is this kind of thing generally a good idea?

    Billboard advertising

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 05:14 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

    Questions for users:

Do any business owners here use billboard advertising?

    How much do you pay?

    Questions for landlords:

    What is your occupancy rate?

How many impressions do you estimate your advertisements get?

I seen some space for sale that is local to me (Northern UK)

    Thanks
