How to talk to a REAL PERSON at Experian (without spending 3 hours dialing dozens of numbers)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:16 AM PDT

I've been trying to get ahold of a real person in customer service for the last week, and consistently end up at the same automated answering service that doesn't give me an option to talk to someone. It's been so frustrating! Today I buckled down and spent my entire morning off dialing every number I could find for Experian, and I eventually, after being on hold for over an hour, ended up talking to someone in a different department than I needed.

However, this employee was able to give me the "cheat codes" for how to easily talk to a real person at Experian without jumping through a bunch of hoops!

    1. Dial 1-800-493-1058
    2. You will then be asked for the last 4 digits of your SSN and your ZIP code for identification
    3. When prompted, select option 2
    4. In the next set of menu options, select option 1
    5. Next, select option 1 again
    6. Select option 1 a final time, and TA DA!

You are now talking to a real person.

Hope I helped spare you the heartache I've endured today.

Don't Sleep on it - September 30th federal student loans go back into repayment

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:27 PM PDT

My wife and I were going over our new budget and she asked at what point do we move money from our transactional account to savings. And at that point I realized I hadn't checked the student loans in a while and sure enough those payments have to be added back to the budget. I know a lot of people aren't comfortable right now, but just know that they expect those payments whether or not the virus is still here.

[UPDATE] I (18) was just kicked out of my house and have no where to go, I’m lost

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:19 PM PDT

    Here's my original post

I firstly would like to say how thankful I am for all of the replies I've gotten. I'm sorry I couldn't reply to everyone's comments, but I promise I did read many of them. And to those who have privately messaged me as well, thank you for that! You guys have given me amazing advice. I'm sorry I didn't really reply to any messages, I have nearly 200 and I've been really overwhelmed lately to respond to all of them, but I promise I've read them. This sub is full of amazing people, who have given me a lot of hope. Not much has gone down but there's a couple changes.

Many people told me to withdraw my money from an ATM and I have, I drove around for awhile until I was able to get all of the cash out. I have an appointment with my bank at 10:30 tomorrow to discus removing my mom from my account and I am still heavily considering switching banks, I do like the bank I'm at, and they have a great virtual app for teenagers/young adults to help manage their money which has helped me.

My mom won't give me my car back until I pay her $2,400 that I "owe" for the car. Apparently she's been paying $100 of my insurance for the past 24 months, which Ive had no idea, and I would have gladly paid for it to prevent something like this being thrown in my face. I told her to just give the car to my brother then, as I don't even have that much currently, and my boyfriends dad is a mechanic and trying to find me a cheap car that he can fix up a bit. It won't be great, and it'll be a beater car but it will work for the time being until I can afford better.

I'm currently staying with a friend who's family has been extremely kind to let me stay there, drive their cars, shower, eat, etc... I'm going to be moving into my best friends house eventually, her mom invited me to and said we can make the spare room into mine. I'll be paying for some of the groceries, helping with household chores, taking care of animals and other miscellaneous tasks. I offered them rent per month and they were extremely kind to refuse. I do still plan on looking for my own place eventually but at least I have time to sort things out and not feel rushed. I was beginning to panic and this has really calmed me down.

My job is finally giving us bonus pay for working all of Covid. It's only around $300, and I'm going to get another $200 for completing manager training. It's only $500 total, which isn't much in the "real world", but it's going towards a new car.

I keep in contact with my mom, it's hard for me to completely cut her out, despite how toxic she's been I still love her. She has said very harsh things to me including telling me I'm not her daughter anymore. I offered her two options between us trying to work things out and going to counseling or never speaking again and she said, "Then we don't have a relationship anymore." She keeps flip-flopping between telling me how much she misses me and loves me, to saying how she never wants to see me again. I feel very manipulated, and she's sent me threats that "there will be hell to pay if I'm not home today." So I decided that I'm not going back home. I offered to talk in person once we've had some time apart, so I can feel safe and comfortable. She laughed at me again and told that "you have to feel safe around your mother." I sent her a list of reasons why I didn't feel safe coming home and she still keeps playing the blame game. I miss my little brother the most, and he's been cheering for me this whole time, without him I would fall apart. Tomorrow morning I'm going home to pack up my extra clothes, blankets, pictures and whatnot before my mom gets home from work.

I am in need of some advice, my mom was in charge of a bank account for me that holds roughly $15,000. This money was given to me from child support payments and will money. My mom told me legally this was given to her to help raise me so she won't give me any of it, and laughed when I asked. I have no idea if there's anyway I'm able to get the money. I tried looking it up but I'm confused and figured this sub would be great at helping. I'm going to bring this up to the bank tomorrow, as I feel that this money has to legally be mine.

I would also love some advice on how to build my credit up! I have no idea where to even really start. I plan on buying a cheap laptop for school, like a chrome book that I can possibly use a credit card and pay off within the first month. Any other tips are welcome!

I appreciate everyone's kindness, and to those who have reached out to offer to pay for a meal or something for me, thank you for showing me how amazing some people truly are. I wouldn't accept anyone's money as I feel bad taking money from strangers. This sub has made me feel a lot better about the future, things will still be rough, and I don't have an easy road ahead of me, but I know I'll be okay in the end.

-Edit: Thank you so much for the award! It's my first one ever award <3

I need advise on how to recover from losing everything to a house fire

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:32 PM PDT

I'm a 25 year old male from Quezon City, Philippines. The apartment I'm renting caught fire the day before yesterday while I was out submitting requirements for enrollment in University. I lost everything and the only thing I'm left with are the clothes that I was wearing when I went out, my phone, and my wallet with prescription and some money in it.

I'm a Secondary Education student, I've worked as a customer service agent for 5 years, and I had a small ice cream business that I lost to the fire. Where do I go for help? How do I start again from this? I live alone and I'm not in good terms with my parents so I'm not really excited about the idea of asking them for help. My friends pooled some money and I got 25kphp ($508) in total.

I'm totally lost and still shocked from losing everything I have worked hard for years so any advise on how to start over is going to be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: a friend will provide a room for me for now. So that one's out of the way. Thanks to everyone who gave advise on what to do regarding my housing.

UPDATE 2: I have a job interview 2 days from now. Wish me luck! :)

Sister needs surgery, no health insurance

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:50 AM PDT

My sister recently reached out to me for advice and I thought I'd seek the wisdom of this sub.

My sister began experiencing debilitating pain early this year and has since lost the ability to walk except with a cane. She got x-rays and apparently has a disc compressing her spine and needs back surgery to fix. Hospital won't schedule the surgery unless she shows proof of insurance or pays for it in advance.

She lives in a state that did not expand Medicaid and prior to covid made too much to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to qualify for an ACA subsidy so she doesn't have insurance. Also in March she was laid off due to COVID and has been receiving unemployment since. She recently applied for state medicaid again and was rejected because the state's unemployment income she gets is apparently $83 a month too high to qualify for medicaid.

She is under the impression that if she got approved for Social Security Disability then she would qualify for Medicaid automatically. She has started the process of applying but has been told it may take a long time to get approved and may not get approved since she's young and her condition should be fixable by surgery.

    Options I've come up with:

    • Stop claiming unemployment so she qualifies for medicaid (but then she wouldn't have any income to pay for food, shelter, etc.)

    • Apply for an ACA subsidy and claim her income will be high enough to qualify for an ACA plan with the biggest subsidy. If the extra $600 a week of unemployment were to continue then her income would end up being that high but I know that's not likely to happen so right now it's really impossible to know what she's going to end up making this year. She very well could make enough to get above the threshhold. It's not clear what the consequences would be if she got an ACA plan and subsidy and then did not end up making enough. Also we would have to get approved for a special enrollment period. I saw one of the conditions is a change in income. her income has gone up since the federal unemployment payments started so maybe that would qualify?

    • Apply for disability and try to wait until it gets approved and live with the crippling pain until then. Not a good option since there's no guarantee it will ever get approved and it could take 1 or 2 years even if it did eventually get approved.

    Thoughts?

Airbnb won't respond to me and I can't get a refund. Any advice?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Back at the end of June, my husband and I were heading back home from a trip and decided to book an Airbnb. The booking was confirmed and the money deducted from my account. $130. About an hour away from the destination, the host messages me through the app saying that he has contracted covid and we can't stay there. He says to cancel and he hopes I can get a refund. I go to the cancelation page and it states to not cancel on my end if the host had to cancel. I message the host back saying that he needs to cancel from his end so that I can get a full refund.

The man is sick, so I didn't plan on worrying about it until we got home a couple of days later. We get home, and he still hasn't canceled the reservation. The money is still pending in my account, so I decided to wait to see if it fully went through. A few days later, it did. I tried to contact the man again and he still didn't answer. I decided to get ahold of Airbnb. Big mistake. Their customer service is practically non-existent. First I went through their app and waited a few days. No response. Then I called them. I sat on hold for three hours before I finally gave up.

I have disputed it with my bank, but the lady I talked to doesn't think it'll go through since I willingly gave Airbnb my debit card info. I'm currently waiting on the decision for that. It's been about a month now and I got on the app to see if anything had been done. There was a message asking if the issue was resolved. I never received a notification for this response! I guess because I didn't respond to that, they closed my ticket out!! Now I have to go through the whole process again!

To make matters worse, I went on the hosts page to leave him a review and saw that he's recently done this to someone else!! I can't leave a review now because it's been too long since the reservation. Any suggestions for how I should proceed from here?

At my wit’s end. Wells Fargo can’t pull credit due to supposed Equifax freeze. Equifax says there’s no freeze. Other banks have no problem. Please help me save $45,000.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:22 PM PDT

My husband and I are attempting to re-finance our home, which we bought a year ago with no credit pull issues. We locked a 3% re-finance rate with Wells Fargo (WF) a couple of weeks ago, but have been unable to move forward because WF says my husband's Equifax credit report is frozen. The other two credit bureaus come back with no issues. My husband has never frozen or locked his credit.

We've called Equifax 4 times now. The 1st time, they said my husband has 2 credit reports under two names (he had a legal name change a few years ago so it's possible), so he submitted a dispute with proof of name change via fax and online portal. Equifax sent us an email saying the dispute was "resolved", but WF said they still can't successfully pull his Equifax credit. We call Equifax back a 2nd time. This time they say the name change wasn't the issue, and confirm that his credit is unlocked/unfrozen. WF continues to say they can't pull his credit, and WF's tech department says it's not an issue on WF's end. Two more calls to Equifax, and they repeat his credit is NOT frozen and never has been. Equifax refuses to escalate to a manager--they say they "don't and won't" do that.

Meanwhile, two other banks (Chase and Quicken) have been able to successfully pull my husband's Equifax credit report, but it's been a couple weeks since this saga started and the refinance rates we're being offered now are much higher. To make matters murkier, today we had WF call CredCo (WF's 3rd party clearinghouse), and CredCo says they see my husband's credit is frozen at Equifax…

I'm at a total loss. Refinancing with WF would save us $45,000 over the life of our loan ($200 a month) and it's about to slip through our fingers due to this (unresolvable?) issue. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? It seems like Equifax is most likely at fault, but 4 phone calls later they continue to deny the problem is on their end. I also can't figure out why Chase and Quicken were able to pull the credit, but Wells Fargo can't. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Disabled friend in need of a vehicle. What are her options?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:00 PM PDT

So I put this on both the poverty sub and the disability sub, but I decided to try here too.

My friend is paralyzed from the neck down. Despite that, she has found parttime work and she leads an active social life. She is perfectly fine besides the fact that she just can't move.

She wants to buy a vehicle, not just because of the pandemic, but just for that little bit of extra independence.

The issue is that she cannot only not afford a vehicle, but she is worried that trying to save for one would work against her current assistance. I have been told to try and look into charities, but I'm not sure where to even begin. I mean, how does anyone buy these things?

Bank asked where my money came from

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT

Sorry if this is not the place, but my girlfriend and I are pretty sketched out at this situation. We just went to deposit some money she got for her birthday at a local ATM. Some of the bills would not work in the ATM so she went to the teller. When he went to put the money into the account, she stated that it did not look like she was expecting to receive any funds right now, so where did the money come from. She and I were very caught off guard from this kind of question and didn't really know how to answer. She is currently on unemployment due to the pandemic. Are banks able to tell that she was on unemployment? Are we getting sketched over this situation for no reason? This just seemed really off the wall, something I've never encountered before at a bank.

    Edit:

We called in and this was just a huge misunderstanding. He was asking her if she would like to open a savings or something like that. Words must have gotten jumbled around with the masks and what not.

Looking for investment advice after the death of my wife — in particular, retirement.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:07 PM PDT

My wife passed away this summer, and I've inherited her retirement fund. I need to figure out what to do with it, as well as what other investments I should be making. Here's some relevant information:

I just turned 40, and have a 3-year-old and a newborn. My wife has around $20k in a 401(k). I have $95k with TIAA-CREF. After my wife died, friends of ours organized a GoFundMe, and as a result, I have $33k in my checking account, and $17k in a "high-yield" (Ha. 1%. Thanks, Covid.) savings account. I just paid off one of our cars and will be selling it, and then I plan to pay off our minivan. No other debt besides the mortgage. Both kids now receive monthly social security benefits. I plan to start college funds for both of my kids, although I work for a university and plan to stay here, which means tuition would be free. Not sure how much I should put in.

So, what should I do with her retirement? I think I should roll it over to retirement for me, but 401(k) or IRA? Or something else? Is there anything else I should be doing with my money? Thanks in advance.

Putting my incarcerated sibling on my card to rebuild their credit before release.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:54 PM PDT

My brother is in prison and gets out in a little over 2 years. I was reading that I may be able to add him to my Capitol One CC account as an authorized user and it will slowly build his credit so he has a fairly good standing by the time he gets out. (Link I found). He's a good guy and has a solid plan for himself after release along with a great network of family and friends to help him out.

He has been in for a while though, and on the off chance he goes all Brooks Hatlen on us, I want to know what the pros and cons are of putting him on my account since I've worked pretty hard to build my credit up to this point and don't want it tarnished. So I suppose my main question would be:

If I were to add him to my account as an authorized user until his release, then remove him from the account and let him do his own thing, would that effect either one of us in a negative way? Such as his credit taking a hit after I remove him or him still having some tie back to my account should he default on a loan or something after I remove him and my credit takes the hit?

any pro-tips and/or better avenues are always welcome as well.

    Thanks so much!

Advice: One stock is worth 1/3 of my total stock portfolio. How do I diversify while not losing a ton to capital gains?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:03 PM PDT

I've been investing for at a novice level over 15 years but in the past couple years have started to pay closer attention and educate myself more as my portfolio grew.

4 years ago I worked for a company who issued me rsu's when the stock was at an a time low. It has sky rocketed during the pandemic up about 900% for me. I feel super fortunate that i basically hit the lottery with this but now I'm concerned about it's weight in my overall portfolio and the risk that comes with that esp given the volatility of the current market.

The past two years I've been selling it at year end to offset any loses I had that year to reduce my position without losing too much to taxes but the overall impact on the concentration was negligible.

How can I divest myself from this stock without losing a ton to capital gains?

Whole life policy taken out by my parents - terminate or stop paying for reduced benefit?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:51 AM PDT

For some reason, my parents opened a whole life policy on me when I was around 7 years old. The death benefit is $100,000 and premiums were and still are $29.79 per month. I had no idea this policy existed until my mother just recently brought it up. She doesn't want to pay the premiums as she retires and wants to know what I want to do with it. Here are some options from my understanding:

    1. Continue paying the premiums myself at $29.79 per month and transfer the beneficiary from my parents to my stay-at-home wife. Death benefit remains $100,000 as long as it continues being paid. I would prefer not to add an additional monthly expense.
    2. Notify the company that I will stop making payments but keep the policy in place. Transfer the beneficiary from my parents to my wife. The reduced death benefit would be $45,100 since this is the 20th year. It is currently rising by about $2,600 per year.
    3. Terminate the policy and take the current cash value of $4,378. I do not need the cash at this time.

I know the general advice with whole life, especially at a young age, is to ditch it and start a term policy at a low rate. However, it seems to me Option #2 above would be the best approach in this situation though. That'll guarantee $45,100 for my wife forever at no cost of my own and we could supplement that with a term policy.

    Thank you for your thoughts!

Never Opened a Credit Card, But My Credit Score is a 524

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:13 PM PDT

    Hey,

So basically, I tried to apply for a capital one student card because I am going to move out and I need to build my credit. I have checking and savings accounts with money.

However, I did a credit report after being denied to see what was going on, and...My credit score was a 524 because of a 640$ charge. I called the collectors office, and they said it was a hospital/medical fee from a trauma surgeon from a bad car accident in high school, about two years ago.

My father said it is Geicos fault, so I will call them and see what's up. My questions:

1.) Can I recover from this and open a credit card where I am responsible with my money?

2.) Obviously I will take care of this, but how would it help my credit score in terms of points?

3.) Any credit cards, for perhaps people with bad credit?

4.) Any other tips or guidance, anything lmao

Thank you so much to everyone here, I have learned a lot that I was never taught purposely and I am so grateful.

UPDATE: Just when I thought this couldn't get better, an American Express credit card w my name came in the mail today linked to my father's. So I got a card to rebuild my credit!

Am I possibly being hacked / having my identity stolen?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:09 PM PDT

About a year ago, I had a subscription service which I cancelled. Last week, I got an email from them saying ' Your Caviar account email has changed'. I emailed them and they ended up freezing my account (even though I had cancelled my subscription, it was apparently still there). I can see the email address they were trying to switch it to- same first name, but different last name.

Then today, I got a text from Uber saying 'Your Uber Code: *4 digit numer*. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.' The number this came from is not one I recognize (begins with 201), but I can see that I received the same text twice last year around Christmas, and it's possible that I tried to log in to Uber at that time and this was the way to verify it was me?

Not sure what the best next steps are, but I use a similar password for most things. Obviously, it seems I need to change my passwords for everything, but has anyone else experienced something like this?

*Edit: Went to Uber and tried logging in. It requires my phone number, and when I put it in, it texted me the verification code from the same number. So someone was definitely trying to log in to my Uber account.

    Afraid to spend money

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:21 AM PDT

I make $17 an hour working part time. I live with my parents and attend university. I have one more year left and do not have any student loans or debts.

Since January my goal was to save as much as I can. I saved quite a good amount at $5K which I hit when I got my paycheck on Friday. Mainly thanks to working almost 40 hours a week during the last two months.

It seems as if most of my expenses are just gas, outside food, small transactions for groceries and small bills to help out my parents; internet, trash, HOA.

I feel like I don't make enough to buy wants anymore. I can't justify buying new shoes, clothes, pillows. The new "norm" in my checking account is $700-1,000. So if it goes below that I am stingy until the next paycheck.

Do you guys set budgets for wants without affecting needs?

Any downsides to paying closing costs on a home refinance upfront instead of rolling into loan?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:28 PM PDT

Currently looking to refinance our mortgage which is at $150k, 4.5% interest rate. Probably going to go with one lender who was able to knock down some fees, total closing costs are about $3,200k for a 2.5% interest rate for 15 yr fixed. We have enough cash to pay the closing costs upfront. Is there any reason we shouldn't do this and instead roll it into the loan? Seems more economical to just pay outright and not pay additional interest on it.

Knowing how much to save after a fire.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:09 AM PDT

My wife and I recently lost almost everything after our apartment complex burned down. We are getting a lot of financial support from friends and family. It is amazing to see but also overwhelming. I have never had this much money before (in the thousands). I wanted to see what my wife and I should be doing with it outside the obvious find a new apartment and replacing things that were lost. I have never been a very good saver so I guess I am also asking what would be good strategies in order to be financially stable going forward. We both are employed and recieve generous scholarships for our university.

I want to invest the money I have in savings, except I've never invested before and have no clue where to start.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:56 PM PDT

I'm 18, and I have some money saved from a part-time job I worked briefly. I've always seen people say that it's better to invest than to let the money sit in savings, except I have no clue where to even start. I 'm clueless to what websites/companies are trustworthy, what's something worth investing in, or if I should even just wait until I'm a little bit older to figure out what I really want to focus on finance wise. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I feel like I'm just trying to keep my head above the water right now.

Roth IRA as an international college student

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I'm a 20-year old college student in the U.S. on an F-1 visa and want to open a Roth IRA account. I receive U.S. income from on-campus employment, and I receive a certain amount of money per month from my parents in my home country, and I wanted to know whether I am allowed to fund my Roth IRA with that money. The reason I'm asking is because I remember reading that you can only fund a Roth IRA with U.S. income. Could anyone verify the accuracy of this for me? Thanks.

Need advice on how to handle my Credit Card debt.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:55 AM PDT

First time posting on here so forgive me if im not providing enough information. So not going into how it happened just know I stopped the habit that put me the that hole, but I have 21k on on a Credit Card (CC) that has an interest of 5.99%. I have a steady paying job so I have been putting 600 dollars a month into it confortably. I have 12k in savings and 2k in checking. I have a wife and a child and im can't decide whether I should increase the payments or make some lump sum payments from my savings on the CC or just pay it steady. My wife thinks if I pay a lump sum if will negatively effect our credit. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    Refinance question, im a noob..

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Can someone please hold my hand on this one, im not very experienced and I need some advise.

We bought our place about 15 months ago, we owe 270k at 4.25 interest..paying about 1850 a month total: flood insurance, property tax, home owners.

Refi rate im locked in now is at 2.5%, currently looking at 1100 p&i, with everything totalling about 1500 for our mortgage payment!

Seems like a great deal to me, only concern is closing costs are 5500, processing fee of $845 and secondary market delivery of $325. Total loan amount is 278,500 and cash to close TO buyer is $1080. We planned on adding the closing cost onto the mortgage.

Do these numbers seem good-i feel closing cost are kinda high..and does cash to close TO buyer mean we get back that 1080?

    any advise is appreciated..

    Pay additional principle to mortgage

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:17 PM PDT

my loan due on the 1st day for each month. my monthly payment is: ~$2500. I have a question if I pay a little bit more each month. Let me use this August as an example:

Besides my monthly $2500 payment, if I pay additional $500, to make total payment $3000, is there any difference if I pay Aug 3rd vs end of Aug? in other words, does mortgage generate future interest by day or by month? (Assume bank receives my $2500 payment first)

    Thank you

I received a letter from debt collections trying to claim money from a chargeback

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:59 PM PDT

Long story short -- I ordered something from bestbuy back in February. It was scanned delivered but I could not find the package for weeks, so I then filed a chargeback because bestbuy wouldn't refund me on the missing package. Today I received a letter from collections trying to claim the funds from this order. What should I do? Technically, is this valid considering that I never received it? The amount is $400

    Need Advice About Bad Credit.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:11 PM PDT

My credit is in the toilet!

I never ment for it to happen. Had good credit before I got hurt and my wife got sick. I don't owe a lot in credit card debt. Maybe $1500.00 across 4 cards. Would I be better off sending a little to each card or paying them off one at a time. If I contact the CC company can I get them to quit adding intrest & set up a payment plan? I really want to get this straightened up. Should I get a secured card to help pull up my credit score up. It's hovering around 580. I need to get it up to 650 as soon as possible to get a car loan. My car is in its last legs. I spend more keeping it running than a car payment would be. I don't need nothing fancy, just reliable. I have to rent a car when my wife has Dr. appoints more than 30 miles away. I have let everything the pawnshop had go. No more paying them. I had a title loan which I paid off.
