Any money in cannabis sales? Sales and Selling

Any money in cannabis sales? Sales and Selling

    Any money in cannabis sales?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT

Seems like an obvious question, but it's a foreign industry to me. I'm in manufacturing that heavily leans on oil & gas right now, and have been doing business development / outside sales (B2B) here for over a decade. Getting tired of the booms and busts, and while my state isnt legalized yet (Texas), I just know I'm going to be kicking myself for not exploring the industry for a career in 10-20 years.

Posting here as I'm more interested in the sales and business aspect rather than just being able to smoke weed.

Ideally a high level B2B and not something entry level like budtending.

I dont even consume often it just seems like the next obvious gold rush. I'd even be down for the equipment side of things. If theres a better place to post this then by all means point me in that direction.

    Appreciate your time.

Job seekers in SaaS - how is the market out there?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:56 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I was recently laid off from a new position that I started Pre-Covid (my start date was literally the day the lockdowns happened here in SF). While I am frustrated to be back on the job search so soon, I am also surprised that there are virtually no posts about job searching here on Reddit. Are sales people out of work, or is the market really as bad as people say? I have heard that it is now thousands of reps going for two jobs. To anyone who has started looking - or is a hiring manager - how is the market for experienced SaaS reps that were once top performers?

Need advice on changing my transactional approach to a more relationship-based approach (outside sales)

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:28 AM PDT

All my previous roles, whether inside sales or outside sales, have always been more on the transactional side (even if it was B2B sales). I find that this mindset is making it more difficult for me to build relationships, especially in my current industry, which is relationship-focused.

In my current role, I do private lending in the commercial real estate space, which can be a very complex industry. Our typical loan size is from $5M to $50M, but can go as high as above $100M. We also do senior and junior loans, and even equity takeout loan. So not quite as transactional, as you can imagine. Just a sample of a deal I'm working on: Bridge loan of $5-$7M (mix of senior and junior debt), followed by a construction loan of $50M (again, mix of senior and junior debt).

I'm outside sales, but I also do all my prospecting/cold calling. We do not have the equivalent of an SDR or BDR (not an industry norm). And right now, due to COVID-19, I can't set up a face to face meetings, only phone ones. It's obviously easier to build relationships in person, but for the immediate future, it's not something I can do.

My challenge is the following. I'm very transactional. I get down to business almost immediately in my phone calls, and I always ask for business right away. I don't beat around the bush. Many prospects appreciate that (they are busy ****ers, and don't like wasting time), but I feel like it's not a good way to build relationships, especially when you can't meet in person. I feel like I need to find a balance between a transactional approach and a more relationship-based approach.

As you can imagine, most of my prospects (but not all) are quite sophisticated, often juggle multiple projects that can range from 10s of millions to close to 100 million in revenues (usual margins are around 8% to 15%), and are typically worth a shit ton of money. In the above example I gave, the proforma expected revenue of the project is close to $80M (gross revenue).

I would love to get feedback/advice for people in a similar type of roles (roles that are much more relationship-based, doesn't have to be the same industry), and from people who did a transition of a more transactional-type of role to a more relationship-based role.

How do you move up in the sales world?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:11 AM PDT

I'm 27 year old guy. I have about 3 years of experience being a general analyst for a sales enablement team for a big IT services company, and now I'm an SDR for an E-Learning company and have been for about a year. I set up meetings for myself though and go through the whole process. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice of where, or how to move my career forward? Should I get a mba? How do you get your first managerial job? Where does a SDR usually take their career? Ultimately I want to make the most money I can, and working for a big tech company would be awesome. Thank you!

Haven't worked in sales since 2015, fooled around these last 5 years, what are my options to get back into sales with this long gap on my resume?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:35 PM PDT

Basically in 2015 I left sales and drifted I don't even have a good reason at all just smoked weed and went in and out of temporary factory/warehouse jobs I was young and stupid. Anyway, I decided its time for me to get my life together and get back into sales. Unfortunately, I have a 5 year gap on my resume, I didn't even work from 2017-2020. I live with my grandma, 29 and dead broke. How would I get back into sales at this point? My experience is 2 years sales associate and 1 year inside sales. from 2012-2015.

    Rationale for competitor's sales tactic?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:56 AM PDT

I've recently discovered that my competitors rarely give their customers a price over the phone, but are insistent on emailing them a price. Their prices are at the upper end of the scale.

Obviously, its nice to have a paper trail but I'm suspecting there is more to it than that. It sounds counter-intuitive. Surely, by phoning them you get instant feedback and can gauge reaction better?

But, I think I could be just too naive...What's do you think is the rationale behind this strategy?

Looking for possibilities that use the same skill-set as financial advising.

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I'm a CSA with a stock brokerage firm retail office, started in back office, I'm licensed (7+63.) I've thought of enrolling in a CFP program and similar things and trying to transition to being an advisor. For a while, I worked for an independent CFP who had his own firm after working for the big guys for 20 some odd years. I loved watching him in action and I liked how he streamlined everything into a very efficient package (he sold advisory packages and insurance to support it.) I wish I could have grown a business off of his practice but it was just too small.

Now, I've been with a major firm again a few months and it's just depressing to me. Everything is archaic and weighed down by regulations. I'm working for some old guys and one of them is pretty loose with FINRA rules and it constantly stresses me out. I'm not even earning a commission and I have to worry about what he's doing. The one young broker in the team wants to do something like what my old boss had and he's constantly inheriting other people's accounts that are labor intensive, not advisory model friendly and relatively unprofitable. I fear that best case scenario would be the same deal for me for years. Plus, I've noticed a lot of brokers who succeed at advisory come from an affluent class I just don't. I don't really know how to woo someone who has $15 million to invest, I'm just not there yet.

Are there other things I could consider doing that would be a better route? I like helping people with retirement as a possible route. I feel I'm generally knowledgeable and enjoy investment topics.

Any other lawyers (or similar) who lurk here?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Sorry sales folks for invading your space, but I spend a lot of time here in the sales sub because I want to learn from successful sales pros. Sales skills are essential for what I do and I suck at it, so I lurk here all the time.

Are there any other lawyers here, or people in similar fields not traditionally thought of as sales, who want to talk about sales skills in our profession?

As I look back at how many sales I lost in a year by not reducing my price, it makes me wonder if price seriously is never the objection?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:35 AM PDT

I thought I was being awesome by sticking with the prices I had set. It's a bit out of my ballpark. Sorry, price is not something we compromise on since we have high quality. I thought for sure they'd come back around.

Yet I'd have a lot more clients if I did.

What excel skills are expected for a sales job?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I've been looking at sales job listings and trying to figure out how to make myself a decent applicant for a first time sales job. Excel is on most of them, which I haven't used since high school. What excel skills does a sdr need to have to not be a complete burden?

Employer Cut Pay but Paid Dividends

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:42 AM PDT

Curious if I have a right to be mad here or if there's legal reasons I don't know about that they had to continue with dividend payout.

Beginning April 1st, all employees took a 10% pay cut on our base salary due to Covid. Frustrating but understandable. This morning I received an email that dividends were paid on my stock I own in my company.

I've never been so upset to receive money. How are you going to pay out dividends to stockholders but expect your employees to work for less?

Do I have a right to be upset?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:33 AM PDT

If a sales person working for a wireless carrier that recently acquired another wireless carrier wanted to:

Get a database of customer phone numbers from the carrier being acquired located within a certain geographic area to switch them to the new parent carrier before they are switched automatically,

Where would he/she get this database?

Looking for sales advice in interview questions

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:41 PM PDT

    Looking for advice

I've always been stumped by the question "How much do you know about technology/the internet" during interviews for Tech SDR positions.

I suppose would anyone be able to add insight as to how to best address this question/what is the interviewer really getting at?

    Appreciate any input!
