    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jan 30, 2020

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:06 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

What's gonna happen with AMD long term

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:20 AM PST

What we are seeing with AMD right now is what we expected. People are not gonna buy AMD products as soon as they release, because that would be stupid. The span of powerful gaming rigs and workstations is around 5 years, so if 70% of the people made theirs before the AMD release they would have used Intel chips and all that jazz. So we won't see a significant rise in the sales until people start upgrading, and they will go with AMD, because they're crushing right now. So best case scenario everyone built their rig around 5 years ago they are upgrading now, worst case they built it the day before AMD releases and we have to wait 5 years. But overall I think AMD will see the biggest increase around 2/3 years forward. This is just me excusing spending all of my 2k I needed for rent this month in AMD stocks and not seeing immediate gainz.

Market looks unstoppable. Those holding Cash, what do you think?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

The big boys all hit homeruns.

    Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Looks like this market has legs. Those who are heavy in cash, have you thrown in the towel? Looks like the S&P500 could go up another 10-15% this year.

Do I have the concept of candlesticks correct?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:55 AM PST

For whatever reason I've been confused as hell by candlesticks. Think I understand now but I wanna make sure.

A candlestick measures a period of time, the real body measures the price at the beginning and end of that period, or open and close. And the wick measures the high and low price during that time period, at ANY point inside that period.

    Do I have this right?

Any possible Brexit plays? Looking for both safe and risky exposure

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:42 PM PST

As the title says, does anyone have an insight on what a good play for Brexit would be? I'm assuming that Trump and the UK will come up with a deal at some point. I'm willing to wait. But I know nothing about UK exposure/interests.

    Question on taxes.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:43 AM PST

    Guys hi,

This year i opened schwab account and made my first stock investment. (Long term i am not planning to sell it for 5+ years)

    Today i received 1099 Composite and Year-End Summary-2019.

It has 7.38 in interest income. (screenshot)

Am i understanding it right that it is the only amount i have to put on my income tax for this year ?

Basically whatever Composite and Year-End Summary says i have to pay and there is no tax on open position it self ?

Just want to ensure i do everything correctly.

What’s up with the rapid run up of the markets near the end of today’s trading session ($SPY)?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:28 PM PST

Title says it all, I was having a good day because my $GLD calls were doing well when I had checked them around noon but then the next time I look at the markets they had roared back into the green and then some in the span of less than 2 hours. I found this pretty surprising because I had heard that WHO had announced that the coronavirus was an international emergency around that time so I do not understand what prompted this run. Any news or info that came out that explains this? Pretty bummed that I lost all the gains I had on $GLD 😕, would be nice to know why.

How are shares divided from New to Old buys?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:17 PM PST

This may be a dumb question so I appologize. Just recently got my feet wet in investing and this is something I can't find in my searches (Maybe I'm just searching wrong) Anyways

I read online that they'll be lenient on taxes if you hold your shares over a year and then sell. Question I have is how do you tell how old a share is if you've been buying it over the course of a year?

So say I buy 20 shares of MSFT each month. At the 14th month marker I want to sell the 40 shares that are over a year old. Will my brokerage divide them up from dates purchased so I know which 40 are over a year old? (Currently use Merrill)

Bank of America, different classes of stock

Stocks have different price, but also different dividend yields and second is the main source of my confusion. I wanted to know more about it, but my attempt to find an answer on google didn't go well so i came here.

Tim Cook: No more iPhone unit sales

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 11:17 AM PST

Little over a year ago Apple announced they would no longer give unit sales for iPhones.

The market went nuts. Analyst went nuts. Apple got punish and its shares dropped to about $145.

Now fast forward 13 months and Apple is at $320. Up more then 100% since its low in Dec 2018.

Analyst no longer focus on iPhone sales. The focus has switched more to services, iPhone install base, wearables, and capital allocation. In the past it was all iPhone units all day and all year long.

So did Tim Cook make the right decision?
