r/Stocks Technicals Tuesday - Jan 01, 2019 Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:06 AM PST Feel free to talk about technical analysis here; post your arguments here and not in the current post. Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price. TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term. Intro to technical analysis by Stockcharts chartschool and their article on candlesticks If you have questions, please see the following word cloud and click through for the wiki: See our past daily discussions here. How realistic is Limitless in regards to the stock market? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:32 AM PST In the movie, protagonist Eddie Morra go's "from 10,000 to 2,000,000 in ten days." That's a 200% jump over the course of two straight weeks of (presumably) day trading averaging a 70% return everyday. I know this guy basically has comic book superpowers but is this even remotely possible? What if it's a down market and the the best performing stocks are doing far worse? Could you buy and sell multiple stocks to make up the difference in one day, every day, for ten days straight? [link] [comments] |
Simplifying custom valuation of stocks: Feedback wanted Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:04 AM PST I have been playing with the idea to build my own valuation models to give me guidance on which stocks to buy. The thing is, I am only interested in using rare or unconventional metrics as standard metrics are most likely already analyzed and priced in to the asset prices. An example of an unconventional metric would be using Glassdoors employee ratings of companies to predict long term stock performance. But then I realized, I want to do this analysis often, and maybe others are interested in making the same type of analysis as well. So I made a mock-up of a web tool. In this example, I am assuming that a high amount of Instagram followers positively predicts the success of a fashion company. I am also assuming that there is a back-end statistical calculation to find out whether a stock is over or undervalued based on its past price history and the custom metric. My question to you is, would this type of tool be interesting to you? What kind of features would you like in such a tool? [link] [comments] |
If companies don't make money from stock markets, why do they pay dividends? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:40 PM PST As the title asks, why do they pay dividends? Is it too attract more investors so their stock is more stable and than in turn attract more investors ... ? [link] [comments] |

Difference between WYND and WH? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:24 AM PST Is one just the hotels and the other everything? Is it equivalent to IAC and MTCH or am I way off? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:17 PM PST I've been trying to do research on company growth and I can't find any long term earnings information. I'm currently finding it on the Nasdaq websites but it only goes back 4 years. Any other sources for this type of information would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
S&P average annual return calculation Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:57 AM PST It is often discussed that the S&P average annual returns are right around 10%. Is there a formula that takes into account macro economic data to support this increase in valuation? Inflation, P/E ratios and other data points must contribute to why this average return works over such a long period of time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:33 PM PST I know banks make money on loans. How do you know which numbers to look at to make sure they're good loans? Compared to the normal eps, equity and pe...seems different trying to put the correct number on bank stocks [link] [comments] |

Keeping track of earnings dates Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:53 AM PST How do you guys keep track of earnings? I do my best to keep up with them every quarter, but I always get surprised a few times nevertheless. Are there any tools out there to help investors keep track of earnings dates? [link] [comments] |

Why did Buffett defy his principles around debt and holding percent with $AAPL? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:01 AM PST Apple currently has a massive amount of debt and exceeds any threshold that he or Graham stand for. Apple also has exceeded his general rule of no stock holding exceed 10% of his portfolio. Would love to hear your thoughts on why Apple makes him to overlook his principles? [link] [comments] |
News trading or trading based on news sentiment analysis Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:58 AM PST Hi guys. I have never done stock trading and my knowledge might be pretty limited in this area so please excuse me if the question might be rookie. I am a software developer and I was thinking about building a platform that would analyze news and an AI system would detect how the news (and not only news) correlate with stock prices. I won't go deep into technical specifications here. Do you use any similar software (which would analyze news and make predictions about stock prices)? If yes, which software works best? Thanks, Nick [link] [comments] |
Went to Phil Town’s (Hedge Fund manager and philanthropist) investing workshop/seminar last month. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:10 AM PST I don't see any mentions of this gem of an opportunity. Phil Town literally doesn't try selling anything and it's easy to get into the seminar for free if you sign up early enough. Has anybody heard of him or gone to the workshop? Phil and his Rule #1 team of coaches teach both investing and short term options trading techniques with high probability of profit and clear instructions on how to make it repeatable. Better yet....I hear he has an apprenticeship program that demands 5-10hrs per week of time. Has anybody done this? I have one of the Rule #1 coaches numbers saved and I'm thinking of biting the bullet and just signing up for it. I'm sure it's expensive but it's a OIALT opportunity. Bonus: the seminar is from Fri-Sun and he invites everyone to his billion dollar ranch down the street for a bbq lunch on Saturday. [link] [comments] |
Do any of these stock YouTubers do DCFs etc. for DD? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:22 AM PST Just curious if these YouTubers do any proper DD, cause I feel like for average-joe investors they encourage you to not do adequate research and show you how financial models can be used to back up investing theses. E.G. This FinancialEducation guy seems to just for at P/Es and Debt. I understand keeping it digestible for the audience but idk, just doesn't sit right with me. [link] [comments] |
