My parents won't let my husband and I claim our daughter on taxes (CA) Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:50 AM PST Hi guys, first time posting here so I'm sorry if I don't do this right, just looking for some advice. I'm 23 and my husband is 25, our daughter is 6. We have lived with my parents since our daughter was born. My parents won't let us claim our daughter on our taxes. We pay for her food, clothing and we pay rent to live in one bedroom. My parents said since they pay utilities they get to claim our daughter and we don't, and if we ever try they will kick us out. Is there something that can be done about this? Thanks in advance for any advice. Edit: Thank you guys for the advice. I came here because I didn't know if it was legal for my parents to claim my daughter or not. [link] [comments] |
Put in my two weeks notice and was handed a termination letter, would I qualify for unemployment? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:21 AM PST Cross posted from /r/jobs, I'm located in CT I worked in a really toxic environment for over 5 years and recently had a blow up with my manager before thanksgiving and started looking for a new job. On the 26th I tried to give my two weeks notice and they asked me to reconsider. On the 27th I came in and said I still needed to go. They asked for my resignation letter (which stated I was giving my two weeks and my last day would be January 11th) and handed me a termination letter effective the 27th and a box. The letter says I accepted another job so they are terminating me. Friends and family are pushing me to file for unemployment, would I even qualify? I'm in CT and it looks like as long as you weren't fired "for cause" you qualify. I don't start my new job until the 7th and I had never been written up or anything like that at my old job. Boss trying to fire my wife so she has to pay education repayment plan Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:24 AM PST My wife has worked for this company part time for about 1.5 years. A year ago they needed a staff member to become certified in a special field, she volunteered. With that came a 3 year contract with the company, making us responsible to pay it back if she either A) Failed to complete to training or B) Terminates her employment with company. Long story short, the company (in WA state) over works the employees often - requiring them to bring work home with them so they can continue to get things done off the clock. Turn over is very high, and the company is not quick to hire replacements. As a part time worker, she works for 2 other companies and her schedule has remained constant this whole time. They just demanded that she change days for them prior to the holiday break, and when she and I discussed this over the holidays on her very first day back they handed her a letter which was her resignation. She did not sign it. They sent her an email saying that they are accepting her resignation and that we owe the money now. We have been holding a steadfast approach with stating, "She didn't resign. If you want to fire her, go for it, but that would nullify her obligation to the contract". The kicker is that the bill is like $1,400; it isn't worth lawyer support so my question is if anyone has experience in this, what legal defense do we have. There is no specific dates or hours specified in the contract that would mandate her changing days for them. Kind of stuck and would appreciate any direction. Thanks and happy new year! Someone stole 550€ to buy stuff in Fortnite Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:11 AM PST Dear Reddit Community, this is my first post and i want to asl you something. Not longer than 1 month ago my email account was hacked or somebody gained access. The same person bought several things in Fortnite, worth combinded 550€. I was shocked and contacted paypal and epic games. At first paypal payed me back but epic games followed a few days later. Therefore paypal took their money back obviously. My question is, this person put all his private Data in his epic games account, so now i have his full name, maybe the city and cellphone number, his youtube chanel, his instagram account and his facebook account. At first I thought to myself why do the work since I already have the money back, but personally i want justice, to punish this guy, and make him pay for his illegal actions. What can I do ? Landlord wants me to help "serve an eviction" to another tenant. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:22 AM PST This takes place in WV. My landlord just gave me a call and asked if I could come down to the magistrate with her and help with the eviction process of a tenant. She said that she is not allowed to serve him the eviction notice and asked if I would do it for her. This is the first lease I have ever signed as I just moved out of my parents house a month ago and was wondering if this seems right. Is it okay, as a tenant, to help in this process or should I avoid any input? [link] [comments] |
Notice of libel from home builder for negative Facebook review posted a year ago (ON, CA) Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:13 AM PST My home builder has issued a notice of libel for a Facebook review posted early January 2018. The highlighted areas of the review include us stating our shower was not done by a professional, a quote made by him that made him sound sexist (I had a family friend accompany me to the home inspection since my husband was out of town, my builder told him to get the fuck out of his house after he asked a question about the storm drains not being cut down. At the end of the inspection he apologized to me for kicking him out and I told him I wanted to have someone there to help me and his response included "yeah, especially as a woman") and calling the experience poor and unprofessional. We wrote the review a year ago, and this notice was issued the same day that we cashed their cheque for a settlement made for the poorly done shower, as stated by Tarion. The notice asked for us to remove the review and write an apology. This was all done via email. I'm just wondering if this is something that we should take seriously. Should we be getting a lawyer? Everything in the review is factual, we have neighbours who could confirm that he has been sexist and misogynistic in the past as well. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
HELP! 3 DAY EVICTION NOTICE (LOS ANGELES) ALWAYS PAID RENT ON TIME FOR 20 YEARS! Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:46 AM PST Hello, happy new years first of all. I got a call from my parents who have been living in the same apartment complex for 19 years and have paid their rent on time every single month for two decades who got home on new years with a 3 day eviction notice for reason which are not true. These include: - breaking their front door lock - breaking a water spout to wash a carpet - " on numerous occasions you have deliberately clogged the toilet in your apartment " ( and apparently there is 3 witnesses). 2 of them being the manager, the supervisor, and the third is a tenant. None of these reasons are true. The first decade, they were the managers of the building for the previous owners, being responsible for maintaining the building fixed, clean, and collecting rent. In the last few years the building has been bought and sold multiple times by different owners, investors, and now a company. Last summer in April they received a letter (Voluntary Vacancy Agreement) stating that if they moved on by July 31 (3 months) they would be given $15,000. They declined. They have no reason to leave, they enjoy their home. After the 3 months, the supervisor went to their home to ask what was the verdict, and after hearing no, she offered them $20,000. Still no. Fast forward 6 months later, my parents went out for new years eve, and when they arrived home around 2 am, there was the 3 day eviction notice. IS THIS LEGAL? CAN THIS REALLY BE A THING? WHAT ADVICE CAN WE GET WHAT HELP? HOW DO WE FIGHT THIS? PLEASE HELP >> let me also add that tenants are required to pay for rent at a 711 location or can do it online. When they tried paying at several different locations, they received error messages. They tried paying online and the system locked them out of the account. When they called the supervisor, they were told she would call back and never did. ( I have a feeling the owners of the company did something to their account on purpose to prevent them for paying. They've paid rent every month on time, or in advanced) Thank you in advanced for any advice and let me know if there is other information that needs to be added. Have a great day [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:18 PM PST Sorry, shit title. My family put my grandparents house on the market a month ago. A week after, two brand new iPhones showed up with my grandma's name on it. No chance she ordered them - she was alive when the order took place but she wasn't in a position to use a phone or know her social or anything. My mom was staying at the house for a few weeks so she found the phones. She called Verizon and they said it must be fraud and to return the phones. Later that day, someone left a note on the door saying "you took my iPhones". There was a car outside watching the house that night, and when someone knocked on the door at 3 am, My mom called the cops. They did a sting the next day and eventually arrested the criminals. The cops kept the phones "to investigate". Verizon keeps calling my mom saying that they need the phones back and that we're responsible for the cost of them. We never signed for them, we didn't order them, etc. In my eyes, Verizon put my family in a ton of danger by setting up an account without verifying my grandma's identity so if they want the phones back then they can go get them. My grandma is dead now so she obviously isn't going to be liable but are we? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:17 AM PST A bit of back story. My husband and I had been having a rough few days so we decide to take a two day break from each other. He left the house for two days and went to stay at his moms. Then I left and was supposed to come back on the 1st at 10 am. But decided to come back earlier. I walked in the house and heard someone moaning. Went upstairs to my bedroom where he was having sex with another woman. They got dressed right away and she left. Then I asked him to leave. We have two small children, that were sleeping in the room next to them. My husband is very controlling, to the point of almost being domestic abuse. Not physical abuse. More mentally and emotionally. He wanted to control every aspect of me. From my social life, to money and time. I am heartbroken because he would always make himself look as a virtuous individual and would always berate cheaters. Yet he accused me of cheating every time I went out to have lunch with my sisters. I never did. Please, if you have any advice on what steps I should take. I'm afraid he'd want to leave me homeless and take away my children. I did record them a few seconds after the act. So I have that as evidence. The manipulating and controlling I don't have any evidence, just people who would corroborate what I've been through. Edit to add I live in Colorado. We have been legally married since 2010. Together 10 years in total. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:15 AM PST On Christmas after speaking to my psychologist of several months on the phone clearly and agreeing to a call the following day I was feeling MUCH better. She only responded back after my family member texted the psychiatrist of this practice explaining how I reached out to talk as instructed if I was going through anything at our last session - including over the holidays. I wasn't suicidal, did not harm myself, or anyone else. I do have borderline personality disorder and one past voluntarily hospitalization when I had another doctor I unfortunately had to move away from. I learned of my diagnosis during this prior stay, improved greatly and spent the better part of 2018 getting better now that I understood my diagnosis. Psychologist texted me asking if I would go to multiple ERs and hospitals a bit after our telephone conversation. To be honest, I was shocked and confused and the same loving family member who has been my medical proxy in the past and paid for their services gracefully got in touch with them again while I took a nap. They repeatedly asked her questions like "Did she overdose?" when she answered NO and that I was taking a nap (true) and family member repeatedly assured them she had just checked on me and even spoke to me and I stated I wanted to just get some sleep (we had plans for after dinner). She said she was watching over me and knew what to do and knew the signs. Police arrived at my family's home, stormed into my room and were questioning me about my feelings and whether I took anything and the like. I kept saying I was fine and no I did not, and I had no intention to. They said I had to go for a wellness assessment at a hospital legally when someone calls them. Went to hospital, was interviewed by tele-psychiatry, thought all was well and the next thing I know after contacting my team I'm being hospitalized involuntarily and already signed in. I have psychical health problems aside from this diagnosis, this is really a huge part of the story but I want to focus on what I think stands out the most. Basically, I was locked on a very poor, unable to meet my physical needs psychiatric unit and I believe I did not see a psychiatrist within 72 hours of admission. A specialist for one of my conditions was not consistently available. Long story of severe mistreatment aside, I looked at the full discharge papers via an online portal once I was finally home yesterday morning. Here are some statements by a doctor (I believe the covering psychiatrist who actually seemed to take me seriously): "Patient's mood was actually baseline upon admission so same medications were continued" "Patient was calm, cooperative, pleasant, funny and fully engaged. No evidence of mania/psychosis/major depression/panic" "Perhaps this set up could have been handled differently" Etc., etc. Honestly, it's more kind stuff justifying my complete sanity and intelligence. So I am looking into legal retribution for this via the law, I spoke to an attorney from Mental Health Hygiene and Services very briefly on the telephone while admitted but it's been the holidays and I'm not sure of where to go from here or how to start? Side-notes: Dropped that mental health team I had been seeing, hospital assigned me to a partial program (with horrifying reviews all over the internet of course), don't know if I should pursue the team or the hospital (it is a community hospital) or both, I kept very good written records and have saved texts etc. Had several visitors come including a boss of mine, all of them supportive of me. Landlord is trying to retro charge us for electric bill and raise our rent in middle of lease. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:46 AM PST Happy New year everyone! Yesterday I got home from work to find out both my roomates, but not me, received a voicemail from my landlord (management company) that we will be getting charged for the electric bill that we haven't set up an account for since we moved here in June. I live in Minnesota. This is odd because back in October, I noticed my electric bill that I actually had set up with the electric company in June had been more than twice the amount it had been in the previous months that I lived here. So I called the electric company, and they did some investigating. Turns out they notified my landlord before we moved in that they (electric company) could not bill the tenants for the electric bill, due to the fact the meter is set up as a shared meter. Iive in a duplex, so the meter was connected to a heater in our shared laundry room, and it is connected to hall lights in shared places, and it could be even more. The agent from the electric company told me they should have caught this when I signed up for my account in June. The electric company said they had to cancel my account and give me all the money I had paid to them so far (about $160). I contacted my management company immediately after finding this out so I could let them know what happened. They told me they would be calling me back, but they never did. Keep in mind this was in the middle of October. Now my management company is saying we owe $240 plus $30 a month going forward. I contacted them as soon as I found out yesterday, but it was right before they were closing on New year's Eve, and the person I spoke with on the phone clearly had no idea what was going on, or how to answer any of my questions about this, so she said they would be contacting me after 'looking into it'. As of now I have not paid any of my rent for January, and don't plan on doing so until they completely resolve this, and I'm 100% sure that they can legally raise our rent each month during the middle of our lease. Any advice for me would be grest, as this was not the greatest way to bring in the new year :/ [link] [comments] |
Petsitter overdosed my cat. Their insurance is denying the claim. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:12 AM PST Not sure if it matters but I live in FL. My 14 yr old cat was diagnosed with gastrointestinal lymphoma in July (2018) and was receiving oral chemotherapy every 3 weeks as well as transdermal steroids daily. I had a 5 day trip planned to California in October and hired a petsitter that I had used previously with no issues. I made sure to refill my cat's steroid prescription before leaving. It was a 30 day supply. Also left the petsitter 5 pages of detailed notes and stressed to please call me if she wasn't sure about anything. I received zero phone communication while away and assumed that everything was going well. However, shortly after returning home I realized that she had used the entire 30 day steroid prescription on my cat in the 5 days I was gone! He appeared ok but was placed on meds to help coat his stomach. Although he did well for a week, he began to rapidly decline. I brought him to an emergency hospital where an ultrasound revealed he was bleeding internally. He was given a blood transfusion and placed on IV fluids and supportive medications. It was later discovered that he had a small hole in his stomach lining leading into his abdomen. 2 days later he had to be put to sleep. His oncologist, primary care vet, and emergency room vet all feel that the overdose absolutely could have caused the hole, the bleeding, and eventually his death. The petsitter filed a claim with her insurance company for the cost of the medical bills since they were upwards of $2000 (which I had to front the money for). I received a letter today (2 months later) stating the claim was denied. I am absolutely fuming and want to know what the best steps would be to take from here. Can I sue the petsitter in small claims even though they have insurance? Do I file an appeal with the insurance company themselves? Do I lawyer up and sue the insurance company? I want my money but it's really a matter of principal. [link] [comments] |
Ex gf and her mother are harassing me Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:55 AM PST Edit: I am in Arizona. Ex gf is in North Carolina. And her mother is in Florida. My ex girlfriend who we'll call Katie and I broke up over a year ago. As a short background she was very manipulative, and mentally abusive. I finally built up the courage to break up with her last December. We had been dating for 3 years and were living together. Anyways forward to now. I have been dating an amazing girl who we'll call Jane. Jane and I have been dating for 6 months and we just moved in together. We actually moved to a new state together. As soon as Katie found out that I had moved in with Jane she freaked out. She called me 6 times in a row on Xmas eve (I didn't answer) and then sent me a a text saying basically "answer the phone, don't be immature". Anyways, I didn't reply and she texted me again calling me a "fucking pussy ass bitch" and a "fucking maggot". Katie then emailed me a long crazy ass email, and then her mother began commenting things on my Facebook profile. Like super crazy things talking shit about me. I deleted her comments and blocked her mom on Facebook. Her mom then commented on my profile again from a fake Facebook account. I deleted that comment and blocked that account too. Her mom also Facebook messaged me the same comments. Now, her mother is sending messages to Jane's old co workers and telling them insane lies about me. This entire time I've refrained from stooping to their level and have taken the high road. But I cannot tolerate this abuse much longer. I can provide more info if needed. What should I do? Tl;dr I moved in with a girl to a new state and ex girlfriend found out. Ex gf and her mother are harassing me. [link] [comments] |
Biological dad in permanent vegetative state in AZ Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:59 AM PST I am located in CA. About two years ago, my biological dad fell down some stairs while drunk (lifetime alcoholic) and sustained a traumatic brain injury. No one really expected him to live but here we are, two years later, he continues to "live" in a permanent vegetative state in a rehab facility in Arizona. I do not have a legal POA and will not seek one, however, since this ordeal I have become his medical decision maker due to the fact that I am his oldest next of kin. No one else on his side of the family was in contact with him except for my younger half-brother, who is 16 and also lives in AZ with his mother and stepdad. I haven't had a relationship with my biological father since I was 16. I am currently expecting a child in 10 days and realizing that I don't want to be the point person for his care and treatment anymore. 1- Is there anything I can I do for "end of life" care without POA? I don't believe anyone should live in the state he is in (I have visited him a handful of times) and ideally would like to initiate a terminal wean or something. 2- What happens if I tell the rehab facility that I don't want to be his medical "POA" or decision maker anymore? Do they make him a ward of the state? Would they just keep him alive indefinitely until he gets something like pneumonia that kills him? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:11 AM PST Last night my neighbor pulled me aside and told me the following story. Anything regarding the guns and ammo is their exact verbiage. A few days ago, my housemate put three long guns and 1,000 rounds of ammunition into the back of his car and drove off. Later that day, he came back to our place, loaded up another long gun, and drove off again. I said it sounded like he was going shooting as a New Year's celebration, but my neighbor brushed this off and said it didn't make sense for him to be transporting the guns that long before the holiday, or in such a strange, staggered way. My neighbor is knowledgeable about guns, says he owns a few, and was concerned enough about this that he was about to go to the police. He asked me the housemate's name for the report. I had forgotten his last name in the heat of the moment, so I went inside and looked in the trash until I found some old mail. The mail was something about his Eagle Scout status. I shared his full name with my neighbor, but he changed his mind about going to the police after finding out that my housemate is an Eagle Scout. ------ I barely know my neighbor, my housemate, guns, or gun laws and norms. I'm posting here to better figure out what to think about all this and what I should do. We live a few miles from the site of a terrible recent mass shooting, so for all I know my neighbor is just on edge from that. On the other hand, he seems like a level-headed family man with a great job and I have no idea why he would lie about his level of concern regarding this. The Eagle Scout thing seems foolish to me, though. Being an Eagle Scout doesn't magically prevent someone from doing horrible or illegal things.

Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:19 AM PST (Colombia) I'm a 24 yr old female visiting Colombia from the United States, specifically to see my boyfriend. In October I rented a house from his cousins friend, I'll call him CF for cousins friend. CF agreed to rent me his house. We never signed anything, and I never violated the terms that we verbally agreed upon During my stay two cups and one plate were broken. I broke the plate, my boyfriend broke two cups, neither of which were done with malice or intent. He owed me 67 mil pesos, more than enough for the cups and plate, but I figured we'd call it square. Upon returning to my home in the US, I get an angry phone call from CF claiming that I left his house "destroyed" which is a proven lie. He yelled at me on the phone and I said I'd pay him for the damages thinking he'd charge me for only the things I broke. The bill which I received was full of things I never so much as touched, and the things that I did break he was charging an inflated price. He sends me his bank account and full name and demand I western union him the money the next day. On the advice of my Colombian friends, I tell him "I'm not paying you anything" everyone tells me not to pay him. He says "Ok bitch see you when you get back." I block him because he starts calling me a bitch and a pig. Yesterday he shows up outside my house, he comes in through a door I left open when cleaning, he approaches me menacingly whilst being told to leave multiple times. I keep repeating "get out get out get out" and telling him I don't owe him that money. He snatches my phone out of my hand and makes for the door, I jump on him because I need my phone. He turns around and starts raining down hard punches on me, leaving visible bruises and a black eye. My boyfriend was there and he intervened, he got between us and said "ok ok how much does she owe you I'll talk to her." He like tripled the amount of money I supposedly owe him because of "interest" because he's an extortionist piece of shit. He says he has a gun and he'll be back. I go to the police with my boyfriend's dad. They said they're starting a new year fiscally or some bullshit like that and won't be open for me to file anything until January 8th. Went to hospital and have documentation of the event and my injuries. I want to pay him for now so he doesn't kill me while I wait to file charges. If he goest to jail for this how long roughly would his sentence be? Will he be free in the meantime? Should I be worried that there are very few or no legal repercussions if he were to kill me? Edit: I'm in Colombia not the US, he called me when I returned to the us in October, I came back to Colombia in December. "My house," refers to a house I'm renting [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:25 PM PST I live in MN. About a week ago we were officially told that everyone who works saleried positions will have their PTO erased and that were moving to a merit based time off system (Your direct manager can choose if you should be allowed to take time off with it being on that person to log the information and tell payroll that you took time off. This seems like a highly exploitable system that could be abused by favortisim. ) There was no form given out to agree to this and it has pissed off alot of people as this means that there is no way to really get time off as everyone who has accrued a bunch is due to being so overworked that they couldn't take a day off. I have been pushing over 60-70 hours a week for over a month and when I asked my boss to take an extra day off to have a 3 day weekend I was told no. I want to stand up for my fellow workers and myself but I would need some firm laws to stand behind to stop this shit from ruining this company as their are a good deal of people who have worked their for 15+ years and we will be set back for a long time if they bail due to being massively overworked with now no promise of getting time off. My daughter was taken away from me by her mother. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:01 AM PST Hi, 11 years ago my daughter and her mom were doing a family visit travel to London (from Venezuela) and they never returned. Venezuelans are having a really hard time and were at that time so it was hard for me to go after her the first year because it would take me too much time to save up that amount of money for the travel expenses, I was 23 years at the moment. I kept little contact because my daughter's mother didn't had a cellphone or computer but I tried to write her often with very few replies. My first impressions were my daughter's mother was hiding my daughter from me because she never let me see her or talk to her, until one day 8 years ago she told me she was getting married and told her fiancé I used to beat her up so he conditioned their marriage on to never let me see my daughter again. When we all lived together back in Venezuela, I lived in my daughter's family house with her mom, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and sister so if I beat her as she said I did I'd probably would have all of her family on me in less than a second, so it's totally a lie. The thing is, I've since tried to contact her and she blocks me on every social network I find her without saying a word. What can I do? How can I try to reach my daughter? Recently I discovered my daughter has an Instagram account and I sent her a couple of messages and got instablocked. What can I do if my daughter hates me for something I never did? Thank you guys. Employee kissed a woman and now she wants money. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:05 AM PST Down South Mississippi. At my store, one of my employees who does the cleaning and stocking kissed one of the regular customers. This happened a week ago. She was jokingly complaining about the item she wanted to purchase being too high. Being Christmas, her being a regular customer he gives her $5 to get the item. She accepts and they are joking back and fourth and do this often. After that, he grabs her and kisses her. She doesn't say anything or make a scene and comes back the next day to talk to me about what happened. Now this all happened without my knowledge and I do not allow such behavior whats so ever. I pulled the video and he did kiss her without her expecting it. She says that she does not want to press charges because shes been coming here for a long time and we've always treated her good and she doesn't want him to lose his job. I apologized and told her I do not condone such behavior and she can press charges if that is what she wants. I spoke to him about it and he claimed they've been flirting for a while and he made a mistake. Doesn't justify what he did and it being the first time I've ever had this issue with him, I told him next time it will be automatic firing. He is a really good and reliable worker and I am honestly shocked that he would do such a thing. Finding a worker like him is really hard and I don't want to lose that. He offered to apologize to the lady and said it will never happen again. She calls me a few days later and says that shes been thinking about it for a few days and that it isn't fair that he did that and got a slap on his wrist. Basically she wants him to pay her $2000 and she will write a letter saying she will not press charges or pursue any legal action against him. My question is, can this effect me in any way? Is his best option to pay her $2000? Is the letter legal and does it actually mean she can't go into legal action once she hands over the letter? What would be the best way for this to be resolved? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:37 AM PST My very delusional mother enjoys living in filth. She has a 1 bedroom apartment where her boyfriend is living although he is not on the lease and not supposed to be there. He is also a chain smoker, which is against the terms of her lease. I have almost nothing to do with her but I had to stop by to pick something up recently. Every surface was covered with junk, as was much of the floor. My ex husband had to go there last spring to discuss selling her house. The smell inside was so bad he had to use his inhaler. This is not at all new for her, but her last boyfriend kept things clean. My ex took a picture of the bathroom - the toilet bowl was black. I don't plan to be involved in any funeral for her and will not pay for a burial. Her actions over the years have deeply hurt me. However, since I'm her only child I'm her sole heir (of an 'estate' that might be worth $200). She's 75 and not in the best of health but has no chronic illnesses. It just hit me the other day that I might be held responsible for the damage to her apartment if she dies while she's still living there. I would not be able to pay for that or clearing out all her garbage, since her life insurance has no value My name is not associated with her lease, but I imagine the owners will not be happy with the condition of that place. I did contact them a year ago to let them know what was happening, but nothing ever happened. I also contacted aps because the boyfriend is abusive to her. I was told that because she works full time and sort of manages her life (not well, but enough for them) they can't take any action to remove her from the place or keep him away. I live in vermont, by the way. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:47 AM PST Pretty much as the title says. I will start off by saying I'm ignorant with filing taxes, I've always gone through mainstream ways of filing. But last year a friend of mine recommended someone he knew that files his taxes and gave him high praise on making it easy to file. The guy that was recommended to me filed many of my other friends taxes so I didn't think anything was sketchy or out of the ordinary. Now here I am just about a year later getting a letter in the mail from the IRS. I still have text messages from this tax guy from last year of us exchanging information as he was supposed to be handling all of my taxes. P.S - The letter from the IRS also States I need to respond by January 9th. EDIT: Is there any legal action I can take on this tax guy to prevent him from potentially screwing up other people's taxes? [link] [comments] |
Work has started making employees do push-ups as punishment [Illinois] Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:17 AM PST I work at a very well-known international retailer. One of the responsibilities of floor employees like myself is to check the clothing on the floor to ensure size representation (every size is available) and check for the correct presence size beads (the small beads telling you what size is on the hanger). Recently, some of our managers started writing messages on our notice board and telling us during team meetings that every time a size is not fully represented or a size bead is not on a hanger, the people who worked whatever shift where these duties were not completed would have to do a push up for every infraction. There's no way to tell who didn't complete the task, so everyone on the floor has to do them. I believe the highest was around 30. I have not yet had to do push ups, but am really not planning on it - I find it humiliating to drop and do push ups in the middle of a retail store, especially since I am not in the best physical shape. I don't think this is a policy at any other store. Are push ups a permissible punishment? [link] [comments] |
Neighbor Teen Broke His Leg on My Property [Illinois] Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:21 PM PST Last night around 12:20 AM, my husband and I heard a loud sound and yelling in our driveway. Our neighbor's 17 year old (Chad) was in our driveway in between our cars yelling for help and had obviously broken his leg. I called 911 while my husband banged on the neighbor's house to wake up his parents. Chad told me and the officer who showed up that his friend dropped him off at his house and then two guys from another car started chasing him while he walked the 40 feet from the street to his front door. He ran away from them and jumped off the 3 foot retaining wall from our yard to our driveway and suffered a compound fracture on his lower leg. According to him the two other teens jumped in a car and drove off. My husband did see two people running off down the street when he looked outside after hearing the noise. He smelled strongly of weed (officer noticed as well). He was transported to the hospital in the ambulance. My husband check our cars and both were damage free. He did find a do-rag next to our car that did not belong to us or our neighbor. The officer bagged it. After Chad was taken away to the hospital, the officer searched or yard and driveway. He took a picture of the retaining wall and pool of blood on the driveway where Chad was standing while waiting for the ambulance. We're friendly with our neighbors in that we say "hi" when we see each other and share neighborhood gossip a couple times a year. I don't think they'd ever blame us for what happened and haven't approached us aside from at the time asking what happened. My stepmom thinks we should report this to our homeowner's insurance and have a trespassing notice for Chad just to stay ahead of it. I don't think I need to do either. Would either of these be a good idea? I understand notifying insurance. We've never had a claim or anything so this would be my first time contacting them. I think the trespassing notice would be overkill and tank our relationship with the neighbors. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Landlords wants to tear down front deck, which is the only access outside for my disabled son Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:34 PM PST We live in Ontario, Canada and it's the middle of winter. My landlords contacted me less than a week ago advising that they will be tearing down the front and back deck on Jan 3rd. My son has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound, he's completely unable to move himself. He has a ramp outside that I use to push him in his wheelchair to go outdoors. I've called the property management and explained that I will have no way to get to my son to school or out of the house at ALL (even in a fire). It's the middle of winter, and the company says it may take several weeks for the deck to be complete. I'm absolutely terrified at the thought of being trapped inside my home. The back door isn't accessible for my sons wheelchair. I live alone and have a heart condition, therefore I shouldn't be lifting my son and running down icy steps. I don't know if I have any rights, please help. [link] [comments] |
