Anyone else looking forward to busy season?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:50 AM PST

As auditors we are the gatekeepers of the economy. The protector of the financial statements and protectors of financial institutions. The extra hours really do not bother me considering the impact our work has on others.

What do you guys do (besides cocaine) to help get you through tax season?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:31 PM PST

I'm gearing up for my first tax season and I was wondering what coping mechanisms you guys use to help you get through our most blessed of seasons. Cocaine and alcohol is out the equation due to my bosses religious views and not having enough time to recover from an alcohol induced coma in my 9 hours of time off. But in all seriousness what do you guys do to help you get through the week? In my head I think sleeping as much as possible exercising and eating well will help me be the most efficient but is there anything else you guys do besides that to help work breeze by? Anything and everything you have to offer would be helpful.

    Employee retention at Big4

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:12 PM PST

Hey guys, so I'm writing a thesis about employee retention at public accounting firms. As an intern I don't have access to HR data about the company's turnover rate, so I wonder if anyone here who has a few years of experience working at Big4 can give me some numbers about the average turnover rate at your firm, the levels people usually leave and the reasons for their leave. Feel for free to comment your case and offer some solutions if you happen to have one ;)

I really appreciate your help so I can cook the numbers you give and put them into my report haha, at least the numbers are more realistic than my own assumptions and I couldn't find any free public report on this.

As an audit associate what are ways that I can quantify my experience working in public accounting?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:43 PM PST

I work for regulated industry sector clients (primarily nonprofits). I'd like to find some way to quantify my 'accomplishments' working for my clients, but it seems somewhat limiting given my role as an associate. For front office roles, for example, you can quantify an acquisition or portfolio or some kind of growth. Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Differences between a Financial Analyst and Accountant? [CAN]

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:54 PM PST

I worked in industry as a Financial Analyst where we did month-end reporting for the company I worked in. I am wondering how my work as a Financial Analyst intern would be difference from someone with an internship as a Staff Accountant? Could someone tell me what the differences are in these two positions in terms of: responsibilities, analytics, wages/salary, flexibility to move up in the role

    Thanks

Offer from Channel Islands -Big4 (UK)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:53 PM PST

    Hi,

About me: Turning 23 soon, graduate in accounting '17, will finish my ACCA exams this March (prof qualification, similar to CPA).

I recently got an FS audit grad scheme offer from one of the big 4 to either work in Jersey or Guernsey.

Ive lived in London all my life and this would be the first time I'd be moving out. I would need to start paying rent of about £12k a year, salary I'd expect to be £22k post tax (£26k pre).

The channel Islands are about 1 hour away from London. I could possible take a plane back every few weeks, but it would be expensive.

My ideal plan would be to work there for 1-2 years then hopefully transfer to London. I don't know if this would be possible, but I'm optimistic?

In the UK, audit is very restrictive in that grad schemes appear to be the only route. So if I were to stay, I doubt I would be doing audit.

What are you thoughts? Experience Vs being away from home.

I worked as an auditor before so I just looking for any advice for handling tax season, a new job, things you wish you knew before you stared doing tax? Any thoughts/advice?

    Masters in Accounting Online

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:24 PM PST

Anyone had any experience getting a masters online in accounting part time without having their undergrad degree in accounting? I know you have to take some pre reqs. How important is the ranking of the school for accounting, is it similar to an MBA? Would a school like SNHU be a bad idea?

Are FS/FSO Auditors the only group that doesn't get assigned out of their group?

Or do you oftentimes discover people hired into FS or FSO, working in other groups such as NFP, Oil & Gas, Hospitality and etc.

Winter Internship after Summer Internship then Full Time in the same year?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:19 PM PST

Is it possible to do a winter internship after graduating but before your full time start date?

For example, summer internship in 2018, graduating in fall of 2018, winter internship in 2019, then starting full time in 2019?

Anyone have much luck finding flexible/remote jobs?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:05 PM PST

I don't mind going to an office. I am a few years into my career with CPA and have a pretty decent position. However, I am not pleased with only a couple weeks off per year. My compensation is decent, but I am starting to really wish I had much more flexibility with time off or more flexible hours. Anyone else have any luck with more flexibility or remote work? Any help appreciated.

How can B4 Yr. 2+ Seniors (especially Managers) claim to have experience in multiple unrelated industries? [US]

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:55 PM PST

LinkedIn Example: Hi. I'm a 5 Yr at [insert B4 firm] and I worked on manufacturing, Telecom, and hedge fund clients.

How can someone who's in a management position insinuate to have meaningful experience across more than 1 industry? I was under the impression that as early as Yr2 associate, but no later than Yr1 senior, you have to niche in a particular industry. How can someone with less than 3 years experience in an industry, especially if that exprience is dilluted with comittments in totally different industries, scrupulously list their experience within industries that they no longer engage in as a manager.

I get it. It enables someone to monkey branch. But wouldn't it be disingenuous and quite futile to a trained and experienced recruiter's eye.

Are there firms exclusively engaged in the aquisition of other accounting firms?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:54 PM PST

Are there any "Private Equity CPA firms", in which 51%+ of their operations is the aquisition of small and midsize practices? I say "PE, CPA firms", because in most jurisdictions you can't conduct certain Accounting related activities or own a majority stake in a CPA firm without a CPA designation. This is a relevant note because PowerPoint jocks can't jump ship from IB to start or join this kind of PE firm concept for legal reasons, not to mention reasons stemming from a lack of relevant of experience.
