What is the next step? Looking for ideas/recommendation from successful entrepreneurs here

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 06:56 AM PST

    Hello Entrepreneurs,

    MY STORY SUMMARIZED:

I am 18 years old student who owns a youtube channel in compilation niche (I have created 2 channels before but didn't succeed), kept receiving less than 10$/M for 1.5 years stuck at 3000 subscribers and now after some tweeking/patience/hardwork, I am receiving 2+ million views per month with 81k subscribers (INCOME = 4 figures per month with sponsorships), also I am hiring editors since APR/2018 trying to make it a "PASSIVE BUSINESS" since I am a university student (first semester)

    DISCLAIMER:

The compilation videos I publish is not just cut and compile (few of them are cut and compile), but most of my videos takes more than 2 days to finish with great editing, syncing music and getting permission to use the clips.

    BUSINESS PLAN:

    • Upload More Videos (DONE)
    • Increase Budget of Sponsorship Deals (DONE, whenever I increase the budget I put a higher goal so it is not fixed)
    • Create a clothing line for the niche (DONE)
    • Reach 100K subscribers and increase views (In progress)
    • Create another channel in different subject (NOT YET)
    • I have approx. 50k dollars in saving, planning to to invest with them (would love to know your ideas)

Apart from my business plan, do you have any recommendations/ideas that I can implement on my channel to increase the income and if you were in my position will you try to start another new (totally different) business?

Any entrepreneurs living and building their business in a foreign country?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 06:12 AM PST

Any entrepreneurs here running a business while living in a foreign country? Building a business is hard enough but differences in culture, language, being a foreign resident introduce a lot of extra complexities. At the same time there are ways to use that to your advantage. I'm personally building a business in a foreign country (Japan) and like to here from people in similar situations.

There's no right path. DROP YOUR GODDAMN IDEAL!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:14 AM PST

This post was inspired by the book "Refuse To Choose!".

    You might be a Scanner.

If you're on this sub, there's a good chance you are one.

A Scanner is a person who has a lot of interests and gets fired up about lots of things. You know, one who want to be an astronaut, baseball champion, and a chef all at once. He just can't "settle down" regarding his career and thrives on novelty and new ideas.

And if you're young, like me (21 now), you're probably also in the process of choosing your path.

    School, work, career etc.

As a Scanner, I've had the belief that I must buckle down and choose my one-and-only path in life – IMMEDIATELY.

Having a lot of different interests made it extremely hard.

    Couldn't freakin' choose one.

Assuming that what I decide now is for life it made me extremely cautious in making a decision. I tried to calculate all the variables.

I also assumed - being an avid self-help junkie - that unless I do something I'm deeply passionate about, I'll suffer for life.

Combine these 2 trains of thought, and what do you get?

    Exactly.

A person who's constantly, infinitely, looking for the perfect path - i.e. his "Ultimate Passion" - and is also totally afraid of making a mistake by choosing the wrong path.

    So now what?

In front of you stands a person who's literally stuck in his place. Can't decide. Doesn't act. Constantly thinks. ANXIOUS.

This mental masturbation route, of thinking, constantly analyzing, and waiting for the ultimate passion, this ill-minded fantasy grows over time, and causes the exact same illusion a man has in his mind looking for the ideal woman.

It breeds a completely unrealistic, ridiculous fantasy that will NEVER get fulfilled, and while he's on this hunt, he'll discard incredibly rare opportunities. All of this simply because not a single woman fulfills this crazy ideal he crafted in his mind.

So, what am I trying to say here?

That our minds can become our greatest enemies.

I was, and still am... so fed up with stories and movies about people who succeeded with a different, unique, paths or talents, and being so brainwashed by these stories, I created in my mind this ideal I spoke about above, too.

Only for me it was regarding career.

I find all conventional paths as wrong and bad.

I feel like degrees are the devil.

That they suck all the lifeblood out of me.

That I'm "too creative" or "too entrepreneurial" or "wild soul" to go and work in real estate, or study accounting, or even goddamn construction.

All of this is because I created an ideal in my mind that my life need to look like the one I read in the books, or on the screen, or hell - even on Youtube! Beautiful life from day 1. Passionate career from day 1.

And that's just as fucked up as the man searching for his "soulmate".

That's just as fucked up as admitting that one uses Hollywood movies as a vision for what his life should look like.

    And you know what?

It's insane. It's a mirage. It cannot exist.

DROP YOUR IDEAL! DROP IT FOR GOOD!

Stop listening to these Youtube gurus, stop taking this notion to such an extreme… living passionately doesn't necessarily mean you must be a violinist living in a boat traveling around the globe to perform on stages.

Just focus on a path that even slightly appeals you - sales, a degree of some sort, whatever. And stick to it.

Even if you hate it first. Even if you hate it for years.

Because with enough creativity you'll be able to create a beautiful, tailor-made career, that will also enable you to live a crazy dynamic life you're hungry for.

The exact life that others will use as their future ideal.

And if it turns out to be the shittiest career choice you could possibly make – that's fine too. It's never too late to change it later.

Just start moving, you'll figure it out.

PayPal can be the death of my business

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 08:54 AM PST

Recently I started a small business selling online on multiple platforms and I offer payments Via PayPal, like any respectful site. I think that today most online shoppers prefer using Paypal instead of Credit cards directly both for convenience and security reasons. As I said, I'm a small business and not willing to forfeit this crowd, therefore dumping PayPal, currently and unfortunately is not an option for me.

My concern is this, how come a mega player in the ecommerce field like Paypal is so unfair to its merchants and no one bats an eye? They can hold up my earnings via their platform up to 90 days, and in my stage of the business that is very crucial. It is a make you or break you situation for new small businesses, and I kind of feel like I'm providing Paypal with a credit line while I'm struggling with the loan from the bank.

I have seem many merchants complain about this online yet nothing happened and at this stage, until someone gives Paypal a serious run for their money (better yet our money) I don't expect much to change. They pretty much got us by our family jewels.

With all this tech improvement., when can we expect a billions of dollars industry such as ecomm to improve its payment processing time? It doesn't have to be immediate, but 90 days? Fo real?

Does something exist yet that I don't know of?

Can a business plan be in bullets / pitch deck format?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:28 AM PST

I've always written business plans with a ton of text and information, and have always felt that this is the proper (and only) way to do this.

Recently, I've created a Go To Market strategy in a bullet point format, and it looks really nice. I was wondering if I could do this for a business plan as well (Note: This is not a pitch deck, it's a business plan). It basically keeps things really simple, and does not provide a crazy amount of detail per item. Is this something which is done, or will stakeholders (investors, data partners, etc) consider this not serious? Obviously we'd provide detail on a separate sheet when relevant.

    Thanks in advance.

    How old are you?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 01:33 PM PST

This may be a strange question. I've been running a business for a few years now. We succeeded somewhat by accident -- it was always intended to be the side gig, but we stumbled on something that worked, so we did it and it's now the main gig and I run the team. I'd like to start something else as well and have two ideas in the works. One is almost ready to launch and the second is further in the future.

My question: How old are the rest of you? I'm in my mid-40s and do wonder sometimes if entrepreneurship is a younger person's game.

Why Your Facebook Ads Are Not Working

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:38 AM PST

Hello fellow entrepreneurs, us as business owners know that one of the main problems is bringing in customers. You cant make money or have a successful business without it. And what is probably the number one way to bring in customers? You guessed it social media advertising.

In this post I want to go over exactly what I do to bring my clients customers leveraging Facebook advertising. We all have been through the troubles. Creating an ad and spending money only to find out we did not get what we hoped. So let me show you a blueprint I follow to get masses of customers coming into your business.

First of I want to point out that you will not get as many conversations just running ads straight to your website or purchase page. The best way hands down is easing them into the purchase with a funnel or if you are a local business, getting them to sign up for an email list.

So here is what I do...

    1. Here is a secret trick not many know but you can actually see your competators ads. If you go to their page and click "show ads" on the right, it will show all of the ads they are running. Before I create my ad I look at what is working and what is not by looking at my competators. This is perfect for e-commerce businesses.

    2. Once I get an idea for my ad I start creating it. Make sure you choose the correct objective according to what you want. The ones I use the most are Lead generation for collecting emails and Traffic ads. Do not choose concersions until you have lookalike audiences, you will lose a ton of money.

    3. When choosing your targeting make sure to test each individual interest. Do not put all interests in each ad. You should have many ad sets testing each interest individually. One trick you can use is audience insights, you can use this to see exactly what to target and how likely the audience will engage with it. It's a very powerful tool. You can also target people in a specific town if you are a local business.

    4. Once I have created my ad I usually have 10 different ad sets. All the same except each one is targeting 1 interest. So with 10 ad sets each is testing 1 interest. Now I wait for 48 hours and I stop the ads that are not performing how I want and I microtest the ones that are performing well.

    5. When micro testing all you are doing is testing which works the best. So for instance if I see one adset that is working well but more women are engaging then men then I will duplicate it and target only women. And I do this for everything... Age, Gender, Facebook vs Intagram. Anything and everything.

*Note- your main goal with this is to get data on your facebook pixel which should be activated. The real growth happens when you create lookalike and custom audiences.

    1. Now you can either create a new conversion campaign and basically duolucate your best adset with conversions or you can create custom audiences and lookalike audiences.

    2. First are custom audiences which are used for retargeting ads to further push them to buy or to create lookalike audiences. What you will do is create custom audiences of people who have signed up to your email list, purchased, visited your website, watched 20% of your video, etc.

    3. Finally this is where the real magic happens, lookalike audiences. These are audiences that match a custom audience you have made. This means with a lookalike audience your ad will be shown to people who are actually interested in your product or service. When you create a lookalike audience this is when you will choose conversions. Also when creating a lookalike audience it will ask you how big you want it to be (1-10) make sure you create an ad for each one (should be 10 ads) to see which works best.

And that is it, literally what I do to help scale businesses local or online. Just remember this is just the start the backend if your ad should be a funnel leading into a way to collect emails which is a whole other topic. As long as you go into Facebook ads thinking like a mad scientist trying to test everything to find the perfect combination you will do fine.

Hope this helped some of you out I know Facebook can be difficult at the start, if you have any questions for me feel free to private message me or email me at jcarrbusiness8111@gmail.com

Quit my job 25 days ago with no plan and 0 connections. Started a SEO agency and just acquired my first client for 2019!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 01:43 PM PST

I was working for a digital marketing agency based in Washington DC for a couple years. I loved everything about the company but it I still hated going. I then decided to just quit.

I knew I loved SEO. That was my favorite part of my job. I would spend hours learning about new Google algorithm updates just for fun lol. I was good at what I did and even though I was providing more value to the company than some of my coworkers, I would still get paid the same and just maybe receive an extra pat on the back from time to time.

Over Thanksgiving I had a lot of time to think and I couldn't get this nagging feeling of wanting to start my own business out of my head. This way I can focus on what i'm passionate about, SEO, while helping other businesses out. I woke up on December 5th and just decided to put my 2 weeks in, I still have no idea where it came from. I told them my plan and gave me the option to stay for 2 weeks or quit right then, so I decided to quit.

I had minimal savings so I needed to start getting clients, fast.

I joined a coworking space near my house and got to work. I whipped up a quick website in one day and started cold outreach the next day.

    - Cold emailing

    - Cold calling

    - Created free website reports for the offices in my coworking space

    - Upwork

    - Craigslist (lol)

    - Facebook groups

And other smaller things. I learned just how hard selling is and with each outreach I slowly optimized my pitches. I finally started to land meetings. While I thought the hard part would be getting the meeting, it was equally as hard to close after the meeting.

I started to get discouraged by I kept at it. My meetings were in-depth and comprehensive. It took my 3-4 hours to prep for each meeting as I do ample research and show my value. I do this because I currently do not have a portfolio (looking to start building it) and have to show my value this way.

I finally signed my first client today and I couldn't be more happy! I may not be rolling in millions (yet!) but it is proof to me that I can do this and that I made the right choice waking up that Wednesday and deciding to quit.

The biggest thing I learned in my little time of starting my own business is that I don't deserve anything. Just like other business owners starting out, I've been spending 100+ hours in my office working on different things. It feels like I "deserve" to get clients but that's not how the world works. I have to earn it.

For those curious, here is my website: https://vernce.com/

I've been in r/Entrepreneur for years and have always just liked the idea of starting my own business. Now that I've finally begun i'm enjoying the process and all of the late nights. Just a small victory I wanted to share ;)

EDIT: As a thank you to you guys, I can offer your business SEO services for a discount in order to help build my own portfolio! PM if interested.

How do you organize a new project? I’m looking for some tips.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 08:40 AM PST

I'm looking for the best way to organize for a project but not sure how to start.

I was originally going to buy a note book and a binder. Note book for mind mapping and jotting down idea, then use the binder when they start to take shape.

But that leaves me with a lot of duplicate work in order to share with people.

I was going to make some files on the computer, but then I'm stuck in my office to do work.

So my question is, what do you guys do?

    Any tips help!

Should i be an entrepreneur before owning a big company?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 01:40 PM PST

TLDR Question: Is becoming an entrepreneur the best way to properly learn how to be a salesmen before taking over a family business i feel may fail in the future?

    Hey guys,

so i am a 26 year old who is essentially going through the motions of taking over a big land surveying company due to nepotism. It takes a 4 year brutal engineering program (completed), 1.5 years of field and office experience (almost done) and two exams (getting there) as provisioned by the surveying association. I also have an extensive software background (3 year college program with some udemy courses) however no real work experience other then at university and at my dads office which i consider artificial environments. Even though i am starting to understand surveying more and more, the bussiness side is whats terrifying me. Not that i fear leading as usually i am the one coordinating things but its just the environment im looking it. The firm is such a closed environment where people have been working there for magnitudes of 10, 20 even 30 years which has yielded great success. I feel as though the business succeeded on the people alone rather then the system which could yield huge consequences in the future as these skills will be almost none existent and retirement for these individuals is coming in ~10 years. Furthermore even though i am going to be taught by dad how to quote prices and such, i feel as though it wont help in the future as the surveying market at this point is at its high since land surveyors are in short supply and it is incredibly important to have a survey plan with various buildings.

My instinct is telling me that some sort of side entrepreneurial venture is the only solution to not only make me competent enough run a business but also to have some sort of fall back. Essentially its the only way i can learn how to be a salesmen which at the end of the day we all are and i have ZERO experience in selling anything to anyone. Furthermore, nor do i have any direction as to what to sell as it seems everything has been done especially in software which is a bummer cause i just finished a huge udemy course on the MERN stack.

    Inexpensive Penetration testing?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:41 AM PST

Anybody have experience with penetration testing? As we are a financial app, it is important that we perform penetration testing.

However, we have virtually no budget and it would be difficult for us to put up 5-10k for a company like Checkpoint to do it for us.

I understand that is it not recommended to be cheap on this, but just checking before we are forced to spend a lot of money.

Filing for a trademark, someone else "has" the name in different state(USA).

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:54 AM PST

So I have been sitting on my business idea for a couple months and im getting it started now. So i go on instagram to make the page, and the name is already taken, someone has the same name for the same idea (juice company). They made it in june, have 20 posts and website. Looks like they just started commerce maybe last month.

I am in CA, they are in NY. What are my options here? Can i still get the name? Should I file for a federal trademark? There is no trademark currently, and i highly doubt they have because they look really mom and poppy (no offense). If i didnt file for the trademark can I still operate in CA and sell juice online/at my location?

Help me decide what to do with our ERP tech project.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:36 AM PST

Okay, trying to explain this in brief, but also to make sense.

We have an ERP system that is actually being used since 2014, heavily tested and proven. The problem is, I cannot personally take this further. There's no time to put a B2B sales system in place for it, reasons below.

Right now I'm deep into a major project (far larger than an even such a full-blown ERP system), where things are much more clear and contracts signed, and chances are this will get me tied for years to come. This leaves existing tech an unused, wasted asset. It is not even being sold - at all. There isn't even an active website right now showing off the product.

My question is, what to do with it. It would be a pity to simply let waste of multi-year investment and a fine software product.

Here's what it is/does. Unlike various things ("labelled as ERP") out there, this is a full-blown product. It is geared primarily for heavy stock inventory, ideal for wholesalers, retail chains and in general where you deal with a lot of stock. Multi-currency, multi-inventory, multi-whatever. Split and merge items, FIFO/LIFO stack, transfers, invoicing, proforma, import/export, etc etc. It also includes double-entry bookeeping system and some CRM features. Has passed review of ERP specialists that worked with top products, and we've been even negotiating a multi-million implementation contract at some point. But it didn't go. The product is also blazing fast and inexpensive to host (designed for that). It is a product that can handle load and needs of more complex firms.

Down the line we've also built a separate entry-level flavor (SaaS) that has been in live testing for a while. Didn't get the marketing right at the time, so we decided to iterate. Both flavors still exist in our code storage and just a couple instances are used.

So - what can I do so it doesn't get wasted? Some options I've been thinking of:

    1) Selling to mid-size and larger companies: Out of question for myself, as there's no time left for me to put that kind effort in direct, B2B sales. (Need to focus on the big project.) However this flavor can be highly lucrative as products having our features start from $3k/mo and upward. But without a specialized partner to handle the sales, we can't do it. Tech part can be taken care of 24/7 with no issues though.

    2) I've even considered rolling out a free, lightweight SaaS version and let it build momentum with minimal effort and find monetizing ways later. Note, we already have it in our code storage. But for certain reasons this seems more like a half-baked plan. It would still require marketing to get that needed critical mass. That's investment, time and effort.

    3) Let it waste.

Any ideas? For some reason I don't see this going ahead without another company, strong in marketing and sales, that can take care of it while we handle the tech - sort of a joint-venture where each part is specialized into half of it.

TL;DR; Having unused ERP system, little time available, looking for ways to repackage and sell it, maybe through a partnership.

    TIA

Edit: Just to clarify, we will offer a turnkey tech service with full support, 24/7 monitoring, patches, upgrades, maintenance and installation as per a partnership contract. The only part we need to delegate is sales and marketing.

How do you create deadlines while dealing with unexpected situations?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 10:40 AM PST

I would to improve my organization and planning. Every time I make a plan with deadlines, it ends up being inaccurate due to running into unexpected situations. Some examples could be running into software bugs that take an extra day or two to fix or not finding the required items I need locally and needing a week to have them shipped. So I wanted to know, do you usually account for these in your deadlines? Do you often deal with such situations? Do you have any recommended books/videos/websites that can help with planning (whether its advice or a software)?

    Soliciting Advice

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 10:26 AM PST

    Hello Entrepreneurs -

My name is Michele, and I've been building a website ([Website](www.protectyo-self.com)) I'm an IT Security professional, and I don't see security news and tips for non-technical people.

I've set it up in a blog format, and have posted several article's about the basics, I'll be doing more posts around reviews, what specific beaches will mean to people when they happen, and potentially starting a Q&A or discussion podcast.

I've been using Facebook and Twitter as my social media presence. I've noticed the live videos I do on Facebook get views, but not necessarily readers of my blog.

My ultimate goal is to help people "empower themselves" and potentially offer a service for people too busy to take care of their own security needs.

I thought I'd post here to talk to others either in a similar niche, or people that built a niche, and what worked well for them.

Any advice or criticism is definitely appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Unsexy Business- Mobile Auto Detailer and Other

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 08:26 PM PST

So, thought I'd tell my tale.

I am middle aged, and a couple years ago, I decided to start detailing cars for a living. I had shut down my money management business because I was burned out, and my heart wasn't really in it. I didn't know what I was going to do, so I took part time jobs to pay bills at age 43 or 44. Lovely. Did that for about a year until I had the idea to detail cars.

I have detailed my own cars my whole life. I grew up doing it with my dad. We just liked to keep our cars clean. So, I had the know-how, the basic gear, and the desire. It took me six months to get hired for my first job, then another month for my second, then two months for my third. I just didn't know how to get the word out. People loved my work, I handed out business cards, I had a Facebook page and a landing page on Google almost from the get go.

Then, I started getting reviews. I would ask most of my clients to review me. I just told them to say whatever they wanted. This worked. None of my reviews are remotely the same. All of them are 5 stars.

So, back to the growth. Summer time is when people like to get their cars detailed and June, July and August all had about the same amount of business. Then the first three weeks of September, I did that much (= to each of those months), then in the last week of the month, I did that same amount of business again. I knew I was on to something. So far this year, I am up 4x what I did revenue wise vs. last year.

Last winter, I damn near starved because January and February were brutal. Worked when I could, but it was just not good detailing weather. March 1 hit and the spigot turned back on. So, this year, I figured I needed to find something else to do over the winter to fill the gap.

I decided to start another auto oriented business, an Auto Concierge. What is an Auto Concierge? Basically, I will do anything that you need done to your car. Need tires? I will pick it up while you're at work and get it done, and back to you before the day is out. Need an oil change? Same thing. Most people I have shared the idea with (pitched it to) think it's a great idea until we get to cost. Needless to say, the business is stagnant. And it's not helping too much, but a little. I saw this coming in the Fall, so I got involved with another auto related startup business. Still in the pitch phase, hope to begin operating in 2019.

So, yes, I'm an entrepreneur. Not sexy, but hopefully I will have a handful of auto related businesses that I will operate some day. A boy can dream.

    Thoughts On SEO?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 08:40 AM PST

For my new drop-shipping business I am focusing my marketing around Facebook/Instagram Ads, and getting popular Instagram Affiliates. Does this make having good SEO sort of redundant? Obviously I do not want it to be terrible, but I do not want to focus on SEO that much at all.

Am I missing something, or would this be ok?

So I may have found a way to solve male pattern baldness. How can I monetize it?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 12:02 PM PST

First and foremost, I'm not a doctor nor am I in the healthcare industry. I'm a software engineer that just happened to stumble upon it while I was trying to resolve another issue entirely.

I realize how insane it sounds, but there is a very real chance that I may have a procedure for male pattern baldness. To be honest, I'm actually annoyed at how easy it may end up being to cure. The procedure, for lack of better wording, requires over the counter products and a bit of effort on behalf of the user.

I'm not 100% certain on the results as they only pertain to me. However, I have, without a doubt, regained some of my hairline over the past few months. My hair is also thicker across my scalp. The "ring" of hair that once used to grow much faster than the top of my head is now also growing at the same pace as the top! It is a somewhat slow process that takes time but definitely seems to work.

My initial thought was to outline the procedure in detail and ask for donations from anyone that benefitted. That may ultimately be the way I go, but I am definitely eager to hear what others have to say. I'm in need of capital due to some life changing events and rather than just let this knowledge go by the wayside, I'd give it a shot.

How would you monetize it if it works for others? I'm very eager to hear what everyone has to say; thank you!

    **edit**

i'm not a snake oil salesman and I'm not trying to pull one over on people here. I promise. This is why I was considering going with the donation approach. I didn't want to give anyone the impression that I'm trying to get rich quick off the usage of some over-the-counter products and a procedure that's trivial.

I've also tried Jarvee, its "ok" but i cant justify the price point. What do you guys use, any recommendations? I dont need a full service tool, just Instagram.
