We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

How low do stocks need to sink in order to affect the broader economy?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 07:08 PM PST

Hypothetically, if the S&P 500 and other major indices fell to roughly 2008 levels, would this cause significant negative effects felt throughout the economy (layoffs, cost cutting, etc.)? What would probably happen within a few weeks or quarters?

There's talk about how current economic numbers are not concerning, and no recession is on the horizon. Ultimately though, wouldn't a stock market collapse cause the broader economy to fall into a recession or depression within a relatively short period of time?

Is Micron (MU) really trading below the value of its books?

    With a PE of 2?

Its market cap is currently at 32.533B and there's 34.84B of equity on the balance sheet.

    How is this possible?

Facebook is the 'biggest concern' among the FAANG stocks, analyst says

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 11:50 PM PST

Wang said many of Facebook's trust woes have been "centralized" around Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, who was in the spotlight after a New York Times report in mid-November about the executive and the social media media company's internal operations.

The Times report came on the back of a series of scandals and incidents which have mired Facebook in controversy and sent its stock sinking in 2018. As of its last close, the company's stock price was more than 43 percent off its 52-week high. Asked about the possibility of Sandberg departing from Facebook, Wang said it was "in the rumor category."

"I think there needs to be some kind of management change or some appointment that's someone that the market trusts to take care of these issues and to address privacy and cybersecurity in a stronger fashion than what's being done today," he said.

Is studying economics/finance nowadays not smart?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:12 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm a high school student who is wondering what to study in university. In my parents' opinion it is not smart to study finance, as it is getting harder to find a job due to improving AI and automation.

I'm very interested in investing and the economics and I've been investing my own savings for a few years now. In my opinion there are more things to finance than trading and long-term stock investing and I think it would be interesting to study finance and mix in a litte bit of tech as minor studies. Do you think it would be a smart move to study finance or economics in uni or is the time of Wall Street and finance as we know it already over?

You can also tell about your own experiences if you are studying/have studied finance or economics.

    Thanks!

    Is schlumberger a buy here?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:01 PM PST

Simply epic crash in the price of SLB. It's at 2009 lows right now. Last few times it touched this level it rocketed much higher extremely quicker.

    Who else is buying?

    High Yield Savings Account

If a company stock is listed on two stock exchanges in two countries (Canada/USA) does it matter from which exchange I purchase it.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 10:32 PM PST

I have a US brokerage based stock account and a Canadian brokerage stock account. A company that I'm interested in is based in the Canada but also trades on the venture market. They plan on improving IR with a US office. Does it really matter where I buy the stock or is it better to buy the stock where the company is headquartered?

    Investing lump sum

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 12:13 AM PST

This is in California. Writing on Mobile so pardon.

My mom, 49, and her side of the family have never been wealthy or even well off. I've even had to help my mom with bills periodically. Also, help me brother, 32, because he doesn't want to work or act like a grown up. I will be cutting him off soon.

The main point I'm writing this is because my mom has 16 grandkids and has just inherited 300k she is spending a little chunk on me and my siblings, besides my irresponsible brother, and then fixing up her house and property.

What is the best way for her to invest or save the rest of her money, 100k or more. She wants something that will build interest to possibly make some passive income and become financially independent. Any advice would help as she or anyone on the family hasn't had that much money to deal with. My suggestion was to find a financial advisor.

    Thank you!

Edit: Grammar and spelling. Also, hope this is the right thread directions to the best place to ask would help as well.

Edit 2: cross posted from FI and added info

Canadian Horizons 2x bull s&p500 ETF - what happens tomorrow

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 06:11 PM PST

Hi all, a little new to these leveraged ETFs. With the Canadian markets closed tomorrow and US markets opened. What happens if the S&P has a nice bounce tomorrow. Will this leveraged ETF gap up on Thursday to make up for the difference or would it lose out on the gains?

    Using Artificial Intelligence to set-it-and-forget-it

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 08:17 PM PST

We all know that 75% of stock exchanges happen using AI. We're constantly trying to beat the system with our predictions, while we're literally being suckers to AI.

I know some of us love creating diagrams/lines over charts and analyzing bell curves at 9AM. To them, props for following your passion.

But I'm wondering if there's a known machine learning software out there that I could just set a daily allowance to, and forget it. Ideally it would scan through 100s of news articles in the evenings/mornings, check every stock prices (close and open) in the morning, and make the best mathematical predictions for me to buy. Then, sell faster than anyone else once my preferred cap was reached. Or when it predicts it will be the highest.

If not an AI which can go through the news, at least just for analysis of all numbers to automatically buy and sell for me.

I'm not saying this will be 100% accurate, but even just at 80% it would be amazing.

Are only banks allowed to use these softwares, or are there some released to the public as well?

Is now a good time to open a Target Date 2055?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:36 PM PST

Im 26 years old and more or less self employed. I was gifted $15000 from my grandmother recently, which was a wonderful surprise as I was able to take $9,000 and wipe out ALL my student debt. Feels amazing.

I've now set aside $4,000 to add to my $1,000 emergency fund and I have at least 6 months expenses just in case now.

I'm taking a grand to update my guitar rig as I am a professional musician and it's worth it for me to invest in my ability to more easily and reliably gig.

Now I have a grand left and want to start a retirement fund as I've never considered the future and some people suggested I take what I had left and start planning.

Is a target date fund the best idea? I have very little idea what I'm doing and am very scared of screwing up. Please help!

Is there any good reason that Square ($SQ) should be down ~50% from ATH?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:44 PM PST

I've closely followed this company since IPO and have made more money from Square than any other stock or ETF. During the recent plunge I sold off about 30% of my shares between $60-70 but am holding the rest.

I know the market sucks overall right now, and I'm definitely no investing wizard but this seems like a stock that just underwent a panic-selling phase and is trading at irrationally low prices given their recent performance.

Does anyone else know enough about this stock to give me concrete reason(s) as to why they've tanked so hard? (Other than the entire tech sector being overbought) Is there any recent bad news for Square as a company that I may have missed ?

    Interactive Brokers for non-US citizens

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 09:57 PM PST

Which account should I open with Interactive Brokers? I am a non-US citizen, have a SSN, not living in the US anymore. If I open a US account with my SSN, does that mean that I will be taxed in the US? I plan on buying Ireland domiciled ETFs to avoid the massive taxation in the US, but I am not sure how the account type would complicate things. Thanks!

M1 Finance - Borrow Money as Margin

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 03:16 PM PST

During the holidays I recently was introduced to M1 Finance by my brother in law, and I decided to open an account. I am currently in the process of transferring $32,000 from a checking account into M1.

Since stocks are at such a discount because of the crash, I was thinking of leveraging their borrow program which allows you to get 30% of you balance as a short term loan at a 4.25% rate. Is this a terrible idea to get an extra $10,000 invested as a loan?

About myself: I am 29 and have never invested in the stock market beside my 401k and company stock plan. I have all of my student loans, car, and any other debts paid in full. I want to get serious investing after realizing I have been leaving a ton of money on the table by not investing. I have a good income of $120,000 (in low COL Midwest city) and in talks with HR for a promotion which should raise my income another 10-15%. I should note I have a high tolerance for risk.

I am specifically looking at placing a large chunk of the $32,000 into Apple stock. If I borrowed 10k, I'd probably place it there as well.

Does anyone have experience with the M1 borrow program? Anything I should watch-out for?

    Thanks in advance!
