Why do so many self-proclaimed millionaires spend so much time trying to sell you a course?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:37 AM PDT

One thing I've been finding online when trying to research making money online, selling products, info products, etc. is that there are SOOOO many people who claim they make tens of thousands of dollars a month (some times per day), who are starving to death for you to sign up for their newsletter or $20 course.
Are most of these people really making their money from selling courses about how they make money (even though they don't)?
It just doesn't make sense to me.
It would be Marc Cuban delivering pizzas on the weekends to make tips... why? Why make a small amount of change when you've got idea after idea that makes you 100x that? Rather than compound another $10k/mo business idea, you'd rather sell a course for a hundred bucks to people that gives them those secrets?
I've also noticed most of these expert millionaires are teenagers or just old enough to buy alcohol

    Here's my audio book list

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:57 AM PDT

I have the (mis) fortunate of having several relatively distance clients that I have to visit frequently. As such, I churn through audio books.

I find great success in using books to re-enforce a mindset I want to build. Specific advice is often tailored to a certain context and should not be listened to explicitly. No single book is neither holistic or infallible. Particularly for complex topics you should read a few books and look for the trends between them. Chances are there will be 2 or 3 things that are valuable with the rest of the topics being micro-changes.

    Business

    • The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Read this book or a similar Lean Startup book. The principles in this book can save you an incredible amount of time and money. Why launch in two years with an untested product when you can launch in two months and test in the next two years.
      • As a follow-up The Startup Way by the same author is also good.
      • The Lean Product Playbook by Dan Olsen is another great book if you're looking for more.
    • Multipliers by Liz Wiseman. If you're successful, you won't be able to do everything yourself. This book helped me re-enforce a mindset that encourages great results from those around me.
    • Switch by Dan Heath and Chip Heath. I have read and enjoyed everyone of Dan and Chip's books. Two great guys with a good reputation and a knack for informative story telling.
      • The Power of Moments. Extremely useful for building a mindset that can view your business through the eyes of your customers. I find myself referring to this books content frequently when writing.
      • Made to Stick. This book has blurred with the others from Dan and Chip but I can assure you I found it very valuable. I read it a long time ago so I cannot explicitly remember the details.
      • Decisive - on my list.
    • Measure What Matters by John Doerr. A great book for building a mindset now that will be useful in the future. It provides practical advice for helping teams find and focus on appropriate goals. This won't help you launch anything, but it will help optimize success if you get off the ground. I frequently find myself coming back to it to re-test theories. I have yet to actually implement much of the advice.
    • Great by Choice - Jim Collins and Morten T Hansen - the sequel to their classic. It's not a bad read, but it doesn't stick out to me when I recollect the books I've read. Non the less, Jim Collins is a reputable and interesting writer.

    Marketing

You won't learn marketing from a book. They're basically all snake oil. These are at least some what interesting from the story telling perspective.

    • The Conversion Code by Chris Smith. This is about to as close to snake oil as I'll get. It's a very, very sales oriented book. I personally don't explicitly follow any of the advice in this book, but it has proved helpful tools when considering marketing tactics
    • Brainfluence - Roger Dooley. It's basically 100 examples of research back psychology. I consider these "micro-tactics". They're not going to make or break a business, but they're little boosts you'll get for minimal extra effort. I've found it most useful when creating our company's website.
    • The Advertising by Adam Ferrier and Jennifer Fleming. I enjoyed this book, but found almost zero useful information in it.

    General Advice

    • Principle by Ray Dalio - I intentionally waited to read this book and I'm happy I did. It's a 16 or 20 hour audio book - so it's very, very long. Ray is extremely thorough and details with very good examples and facts. I recommend waiting until you're moderately experienced to read this one. I feel a lot of his advice can be taken out of context without personal experience to build on.

    Misc

    • Start with Why by Simon Sinek. Read this before starting a business. It helps me build a mindset of looking two layers under everything. That's really helpful in minimizing the risk of starting a business nobody (including yourself) will care about.
    • Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder - completely unrelevant to your day to day business. I specifically read and enjoyed it for it's focus on story telling. It has given me a handful of principles to refer to when writing (blogs, presentations, etc).
    • Peak Performance by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness - I typically hate self help "performance" books, but I found this one enjoyable for shaping a mindset. It's not going to change your life, but you may take away a few good tips while enjoying the read.
    • Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford. I actually had this as part of required reading for a course. I completely undervalued it at the time, but have consistently found myself referring to it and shaping my mindset of work based on it.

EDIT: Clarification that "course" is a university course - not something I'm trying to peddle.

Would you refuse a job offer if an HR or company manager lacks enthusiasm and does not engage?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:34 AM PDT

    Hi.

So imagine, you get an invitation to a job interview. You show up at the place and see two people in the meeting room. 1 is from HR personnel/manager, the other one is just a random employee.

They open their conversation without confidence.

    - Sooo.... What should we tell you? This is the company and we do this. I don't know what to tell you, honestly.

I ask them questions about the company, about the position and culture. It appears that they are dodging the questions.

    - Me - what is the purpose of this role?

    - Um... Well, we do stuff here. Anyway, do you have any interests?

    - Yes, (I tell some of them).

    - Well, you won't have any of this here.

    *Awkward silence*

    - Okay! We will send you a test. Let us know once you have it done - we will have a chat.

And that's it! I mean this was the most awkward job interview. The people questioning me had no interest in me whatsoever. Now I'm stuck with a dilemma - should I finish the assignment or not? I feel like it's going to be a bad place to work, judging from the first experience with them.

What would you do in my shoes? Have you experienced anything similar?

This is related to a life of a fresh entrepreneur - I have my own project which has already paid off. But an additional income from a regular job would give me some funds for marketing and freelancers.

Any things I should know for an interior painting business?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:01 AM PDT

After getting fired from my shitty job last May I decided to say fuck it and start up a pressure washing business. More like the lemonade stand version of a pressure washing business, I'm talking one man band, 2.5gpm unit, soft washing houses for cheap.

I'm paying my bills and loving not working for anybody, but it's almost winter and I need to figure something out.

I'm thinking I'll do some interior painting using the same tactics to get clients as I am now, aka putting myself all over Facebook and making my whole family share that shit.

Does anybody have any tricks of the trade that I might not think of starting out? What are the common pain in the ass points.

Or, should I do something else for the winter that can put a couple bills in my pocket every week.

Found a good opportunity but need advice

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:42 PM PDT

I am unofficially affiliated with a medium sized publicly held company "BIG" and have found a startup company "STARTUP" that "BIG" is going to invest in.

STARTUP has been in proof-of-concept and licensing mode for 3+ years and is in need of cash to continue and then take the next step. BIG has verbally offered to buy 50% of the stock for $100k and the sole owner of STARTUP has verbally agreed. Next week, BIG will present the offer (cash and stock) and they want me to run the deal and then, probably, the company. I have never been the position where a company buys half of another company before and would welcome comments on what normally happens in this situation and what are the options or variations.

    Questions -

What happens to the $100k purchase price? Does it go into the company or straight to the STARTUP owner? If he gets it, how does it get accounted when he puts some of it back into the company?

What happens when BIG invests more money - (probably about $500k in the first year - there are good opportunities)? Is that considered a loan? Or does it buy more stock? If more stock, where does that stock come from?

What are the typical agreements or restrictions that come with the initial investment like this (such as first right of refusal on stock sales, taking out additional loans, etc.)?

I would be involved (this is in my industry and I found the opportunity) but what should I ask for? What part of the company would I ask for? I would need a salary, where would it come from? How about the founder's salary?

Also, can someone point me to case studies where this kind of deal is described and then examined?

    Thanks muchly.

Please recommend me team/ project management software

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:51 AM PDT

I am running a small size company (less than 10 employees). Until now all the important info, book keeping and reservations been typed in to Excel.

But now we have like 6 different excel files with various different sheets. It is extremely time consuming and sometimes difficult to keep track on all the data.

So I am wondering if there is any management software that could ease up the flow, both for us owners and people who work for us to get better ways to add and access data.

Our company provides transfer services. Most of the staff are drivers, which means that they need to access some information on the go.

Let me give you an idea what the software should be able to do:

    • Text editor - for notes and other important information
    • Calendar - with an option to share particular events with other employees.
    • Track of completed projects/ tasks
    • To-do list / Reminder
    • Live chat - usable via phone
    • Contact list
    • Excel integration (to upload into the management system and editable from there)
    • Smartphone friendly interface.

Any software suggestion or other tools recommendation would be highly appreciated.

What company would you recommend I use to develop an app? Many of the ones I found have a lot of fake looking reviews.

I just launched my side-project, hellonext.co; can you help me test?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:54 PM PDT

    I just launched my side project, hellonext.co; an extremely simple product that allows your customers to provide feedback/feature requests and upvote existing ones;

    As a product owner, I'm trying to see if this can help product managers set their roadmap with the data the receive from hellonext;

I'm looking for beta users, and people from r/Entrepreneur can avail free subscription for the first one year. If you think there is something missing in the platform, please provide your feedback at https://hellonext.co/feedback

    As a customer, you can maintain one single account and follow multiple products that you use and give them feedback before or after you buy the product; and you get regular updates about the changes in the feedback/feature you requested;

P.S.: Trying to build out a better landing page though. But I'm sure you can get a sense of the product once you sign up. :)

Overcoming years of mindless building to finally making my first successful product

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:41 AM PDT

I've posted here before with my experience running an online t-shirt business and I got a lot of great comments and conversations going. I've been building something completely different for the past 7 months, which started as a community and became something akin to a product (if I can call it that, as its a web app). It's not monetised and I am exploring various ways of making it so, but so far it has been the most interesting and successful side-project I've done.

So I've made a short blog post documenting my journey so far, which I thought people might find interesting. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it and would definitely like to hear from those of you that specifically built products that fostered a strong community, or the way I did it - started building a community, which later required an actual product built around it.

What would it take to bring back Vine?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:24 PM PDT

I think the dismantling of Vine was one of the most heinous cultural crimes the internet has ever seen.

I don't know shit about shit but I've had a few beers and I've been watching old Vine compilations all night, laughing my tits off. These videos have millions of views and a bunch of nostalgic commenters saying 'RIP Vine'.

Nothing ever replaced it. I can't open up an app and be guaranteed a buffet of 6.5-second lols anymore. What kind of a life is this?

    I wanna bring it back.

Can I hire one of you fuckers to code this shit? Would it cost a lot?

On the Immorality of Advertising in a Technological Age and Solutions to the Problem

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:20 AM PDT

    https://medium.com/@michaellustig/ear-on-the-public-immorality-of-advertising-and-solutions-169001792d70

I'm sitting in Panera in Yullee, Florida on Sep 2, 2018, 1:32 PM and I'm just listening. I'm listening to the noises. I'm listening to the voices. I can't hear any individual conversation very clearly, perhaps with the exception of the kind older women sitting next to me. They are passionately discussing religious topics. I would assume that they are just coming from church, as it is Sunday in the south.

There is too much disagreement today. There is not enough understanding. We can disagree, and we should, about many things. However, we've lost the pursuit of mutual understanding in lieu of attempting to prove that our viewpoints are correct. We hesitate to let anyone prove to us their levels of correctness. I believe this is directly related to a mechanism we are developing to prevent ourselves from being manipulated. You know that saying, "Money is at the root of all evil?" Our technology strengthens the ability for that maxim to affect us through advertising and through the media we consume on a daily basis.

To summarize that opinion without extra explanation, I'll put it this way: We know advertising subconsciously manipulates us. Whenever we see an advertisement to get us to purchase something, we know the advertiser is trying to short circuit market based mechanisms that we've developed for finding the best products. We also know that we don't need what's being advertised to us, and so therefore, it is a necessary condition that advertising is increasing the vanity pursued by society.

The pursuit of vanity, due to the human condition of never being satisfied by acquiring more physical goods, is a never ending game of cat and mouse, where we as humans are the cat and the mouse keeps getting more and more expensive each time we catch it. This effect is exacerbated by the rat race which our culture makes us (and many don't have enough time as a result to consider the absurdity of the thing) believe is normal and 'real'.

Advertising serves as a fire under the mouses ass. It keeps it running away from us. Every time we upgrade our social status, we see advertisements for vane goods that are slightly above the reachability of our current class. As a thought experiment, do you think they are showing Lexus commercials in the neighborhoods of Silicon Valley billionaires? No, most certainly not. They are advertising (I imagine — I'm certainly not a multibillionaire living in California) private islands and private jets and things of this sort. Are these ever NEEDS by any individual? NO. Resoundingly, there is no evidence that can be presented to the fact that anyone NEEDS a private island.

People NEED food and water at a minimum and then it can be argued that they NEED to climb Maslow's hierarchy. Lower classes get frustrated at this fact and say we should redistribute the wealth of the wealthy, but ironically do so through means created by these wealthy in a lot of cases.

Texting a dissenting message on your iPhone? That was made with essentially slave labor at some point. Your computer? Same deal. TV? Buzzer? Pager? Google Home? Electric car battery? Just because the slave process is separated from you by a few orders of magnitude does not mean that it isn't happening.

Those that want to redistribute the wealth of the rich are both not creative enough to come up with efficient means to solve these issues nor do they possess a large enough scope of understanding of the problem. They are also hypocritical unless they are doing their dissent work in raggedy clothing by writing letters to each other over candlelight. Most of technology is developed unethically, and that should change, but we need to get a LOT more creative to discuss solutions to these problems. It isn't as simple as saying, "Jeff Bezos has enough money, why can't we just steal it from him (forced tax) and give it to the people who NEED the money.

The solution actually lies in Blockchain technology. How about we use Capitalism but we strap on some requirements such as the following:

    • Ethical and philanthropic pursuits are added to market guidelines
    • Nash Equilibriums are reached through run off voting to determine a more complete market analysis of what people consider to be pursuits that will benefit humanity.
    • A combining of ethical, humanitarian, religious (not the dogmatic) and economic values.

There is much more to discuss on this topic, but I actually have to get to work. I have tons of more ideas like this that I'm constantly covering in good faith and with lots of explanation on my YouTube channel. My last video was four hours long. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=483xB-KOsyk&t=604s) I'm writing a book about all these ideas and insodoing, am also creating an economic incentive for people to help me consolidate, edit, and perform various algorithmically and transparently verifiable tasks.

Here are some of channels you can follow me on. Please feel free to present your best argument as to why my ideas are incorrect and let's engage in a good faith debate in order to increase our mutual understanding of each other.

It's time that we begin to right the ship as a collective humanity.

PS: This started as a first entry in a series called "Ear on the Public" but obviously turned into a tirade on the immorality of advertising and solutions to that problem. That's how my writing turns out a lot of the time, but I feel it most transparent, honest, and least able to become corrupted to leave it as such in its original form. In the future, I hope to be able to become financially well enough to go back and organize all of my writing in various different forms. For now, it is not worth my time as I have no one reading my content. That's all my fault, but now I'm just going to begin releasing everything and seeing what sticks.

    Video Explanation: Here

I'm bored of reading the content on this sub, I want to add some content that will motivate others to take the leap to stop reading and start doing. You learn way more from doing, you just need a general direction to start heading in.

I'm looking for 3-5 people who want to build their own sites alongside myself. I'll share all of my methods with you and help with any roadblocks you may encounter. I'm using $500 as my budget for the project, I ask that you dedicate the same amount to your project so the only variable in the challenge is the niche.

Some of the thing's you'll learn:

    • Hiring Freelancers
    • Using Social Media Properly to Generate sales
    • Reaching out to Influencers
    • Joining and building Engagement Pods
    • Website Development with the help of a Freelancer

How do you find Low or Poor Supply and High Demand?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:18 AM PDT

If you build it.....they will ignore it!

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:32 AM PDT

    Hello fellow entrepreneurs.

I'm a little frustrated and would love to have some advice as the business I began two months ago is already gathering cobwebs! I'm already not sure if I should cut my losses as I haven't made one penny as of yet.

I'll give you a quick rundown before I get to the questions- I'm a professional motion graphics designer and animator. I've worked on character games and animation at a profile company but most recently had been working as a motion graphics designer producing engagement videos on social media along with youtube explainer videos, banner ads, aparel design, basically stuff that utilized my creative skills. At that company, our core demographic was older women and so my portfolio is now chalk full of stuff made to appeal to that audience.

Getting a little bored with this, I decided to launch my own little business in an attempt to appeal to small to medium businesses seeking engagement video, youtube video, web animation content, advertisements, illustration...etc. I'm pretty open minded towards a demographic and content, from children to gamers and even to adult oriented stuff. Whatever I can make money from.

So I've built the website, added an instagram, fb page and a twitter account, telling everyone who will listen about my service, and....nothing. Aside from paying for ads, I'm not sure how else to promote my business ? Friends and family are good for pats on the back but essentially useless in terms of local leads. Just going by craigslist and others, I realize I'm in a highly competitive marketplace but I've in the past created engagement ads that hit well over 1 million shares and youtube videos that have hit 1 million, so the effectiveness of my work is not an issue. In terms of pricing, there are so many variables that I can't simply put an exact price on my products without a detailed description from potential customers.

What am I not communicating properly? How can I find my 'niche' when I don't know what has the best chances of working out? My website is hotsytotsycreative.ca I apologize if posting it is against the rules but this is NOT meant to be a spam as I need constructive, honest feedback. Also, I'd be willing to collab in some way with your small business if there is some sort of match.

I have a great idea for an online application, but have no idea how to actually get going

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:30 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm a serious newbie (from the UK) here and I'd really appreciate some advice from people who know the basics on how to get started with a business, so far this is where I've got.

I have a new idea which I'm pretty certain hasn't been done before, it's an online social application which is on the subject of dating/relationships. I have designed a PowerPoint presentation which shows my idea in detail, I have included data graphs which show why I think my idea will work and I have interacted with public a lot and included my feedback and comments.

I have created a survey and I have been out to numerous different towns and cities to get the publics opinion by approaching people on the street. So far I have about 200 survey returns and about 90% of them really praise the idea and were very keen on he concept (I made sure to vary the age of people doing the surveys between ages 17-50).

So now I have proof this idea works and people have shown an interest, but I have absolutely no idea where to even start, who do I ask to design the app? How much money would I need to get it going? Should I pursue an investor?

I know exactly how I want the app formatting and I have already registered my business as a limited company and designed a logo, but now I'm kind of at a dead end on where to go from here?

I'm sorry if this is vague or may seem like I'm doing it completely wrong, but I have no experience or education in the business world. I would even sell my idea to someone who knows more what they're doing, but I wouldn't know where to even start with that!

Thanks for taking the time to read this if you have, I would really appreciate some pointers or advice, even if it's negative.

Is anyone able to help me out?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:06 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

Two months ago I launched My ''Pug themed Store for Humans'' (We sell clothes, accessories and house items). Since then, I didn't make one single sale (if we exclude the 4 fraudulents orders I had to refund - with extra fees). I've been working on my site for at least 50 hours/week while having a part-time job (20-30hours/week), trying to optimize the site to generate more traffic, interacting with people on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, loads of different forums and to friends and family. I also hired someone to work on my SEO to boost my ROI (it costs 900$ for 3 months and they guarantee that my site will be on google's first search page), I've been making/posting ads on google shopping and Facebook (facebook ads and self-ads in niched facebook groups) and I used PPC on Google and Bings.

Since the begining, I must have spent 3000$ on all sorts of things, doing tests, using apps, ads, some courses (I know I shouldn't have paid for that, but what is done is done)

I've done everything by myself - it's been a lot of work - and I've come to the point that it's really hard for me to look at my website without being super subjective. I've reached the point where I really need to start making sales because School is starting and I won't be able to invest as much time as I would like on my website. In addition, I'm a 22y/o student who has a dog (my bestfriend), a rent to pay, a nasty landlord - Because of the investments on my site, I'm currently kind of broke and I don't know how I'm going to make it threw next month.

I'm asking for your help because I've been working so hard without having ANY returns on investments and I feel There's definitly something I'm doing wrong. Even with 40-80 visitors a day, none of them are converting into buying products.

For the last time, I'm humbly asking for some feedback, or anything really... Here's the link to my store : https://pugyou.net/

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this post, you can't understand how much I appreciate it!

    Have a wonderful day
