When I did the FAFSA in February, I was a dependent student, now I’m homeless Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:32 PM PDT I have no income, and for various reasons getting a job for the next month or so is not workable, mostly due to medical appts taking up so much of my life and a lack of reliable transportation in an Uber desert. I lost my car insurance and driving yourself places is really the only way to get around. No buses, taxis are rare and expensive, and I can't ride a bike. Right now I'm crashing on a friends dads couch. I only have this option until the end of August. If I don't get school housing, I will be going to a homeless shelter. My parents went from offering to pay for 100% to paying nothing after I found out that they had actually been taking out loans in my name and not paying the 100% they were promising. (There were other issues but this isn't r/relationships.) I have about 15k in loans already and one year left, and the loans will be about 20k for this year, if I get the same scholarships and grants as I did last year. I don't know where to go to qualify for loans like that with no income and 8k in cash assets and a car worth about 1500, maybe more if I can part it out. I have no one who can co-sign. Every single adult I am related to has "black-sheeped" me for asking why the hell $15,000 in debts were on my credit report. My school still won't give me any financial aid because I was selected for random verification and my dad won't give me the damn paperwork I need to prove that my parents are making a ton of money (their W2s and tax transcripts specifically). I seem like the kind of student who doesn't need any aid, based on their income. However, right now, I'm paying for my own bills out of a dwindling savings. I'm not a dependent. The only thing they still provide is health insurance and that's because they can't kick me off until open enrollment in April. But in February when the FAFSA was filed I was very much a dependent. I go to a state school, and I have a pretty good scholarship based on academics, but my school won't even award that without the verification paperwork. I have no idea what to do or say, or where to go. I am in over my head and I need some guidance from someone who knows better than I do. I'm not at all prepared for the real world, and I'm going to beg at the financial aid office Tuesday, but I don't know what to tell them. I don't even know what they can do. [link] [comments] |
Student Debt: The Bermuda Triangle of Blame Posted: 10 Aug 2018 10:35 AM PDT |
Options(?) for wife's student loans, at this point? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 03:36 PM PDT I'm pretty clueless about student loans, but am attempting to take over the task of resolving my wife's student loan mess. I'll skip the "how did it get to this point" sob story, and just present the situation as of right now: 1) Looking at her summary page on nslds.ed.gov, there are a total of 8 loans (between 2009 and 2013). The breakdown:
Total of all loans is $82k in 'Outstanding Principal' (plus $6k in 'Outstanding Interest')
2) She received a letter from the Dept of Education, a "Notice of Proposed Wage Garnishment", that lists the defaulted loans from above. It says the balance is $96k ("includes, for loan debts, the principal loaned and any capitalized interest.", and also says something about collection costs being 25% of unpaid principal and interest). This letter talks about garnishing 15% of disposable pay, and provides details on how to object to the garnishment and get a hearing.
3) She has received what appears to be a second letter, dated a few days after the one above, also from Dept. of Education. This one is a "Debt Statement", listing he defaulted loans and a total of $77k (principal and interest on debts eligible for offset). This letter also has a letter titled "Request for Review", and instructions for requesting a hearing.
4) She has (obviously, I guess) not made any payments to any of these in quite awhile. The bulk of these were to University of Phoenix. In looking thru the 'details' for each loan listed above, on most of them I see a series of "In Repayment" and "Forebearance" statuses, before a "Defaulted, Unresolved". Suggestions for what should be done? I see mentions of "PAYE" and "REPAYE", but am not sure if those apply. Or if that's the best way to proceed. [link] [comments] |

How Does IBR Work With New Loans For Grad School? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:26 PM PDT So I was on an IBR for my undergrad loans. I then returned to grad school about 7 years later, taking out more Fedloans, and am currently still in grad school and recertified my IBR. I was denied. I've been in grad school for 2 years now and am wondering what happened. I was told today I was denied and I know I'll have more info once I get the letter explaining why but am curious if I didn't qualify because I still have a balance on undergrad loans? Will my graduate loans only qualify for IBR now since I went back to school or will all of my student loans qualify? [link] [comments] |
How to begin paying fed student loans Posted: 10 Aug 2018 09:50 PM PDT I'm an incoming freshman and was just disbursed my fall loans ($1,750 subsidized, $1,000 unsubsidized, will get this same set of loans in the spring), and my loan servicer is Navient. I made my account with Navient and am trying to establish how to make interest only payments on my unsubsidized loan while in college and I'm not finding anywhere to make payments or enroll in a payment plan. Anyone else in this situation or knows what to do? I also may pay more than interest depending on if I have the money at the time, and may contribute to the subsidized loan later down the line (in the process of getting another job). Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 03:25 PM PDT Hi everyone, I made a big mistake while signing up for school, and I don't really know what to do. I signed up for the fall semester and just went about it, but I withdrew from classes. The fees still piled on, and I'm 11,000 in debt, and by now they've went to a debt collection agency. I did not enroll for spring, and I'm not sure what to do. I know I'm really dumb and I'm looking for some help on what I can do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:04 PM PDT What qualifies as "part time" in terms of loan deferment? I'm taking 8 credit hours this fall and next spring as part of prerequisite courses for nursing school at an accredited public university. [link] [comments] |
Employer willing to help pay student loans dilemma Posted: 10 Aug 2018 01:03 PM PDT Hey I have 14,400$ at 3.7% intrest in student loans left to pay. This is down from 54,000 I started with a year ago. My employer will pay a total of 7,000$ towards student loan payments but only 100.00 a month. I have enough to pay off these loans right now. And I just want to get them done with. But I guess it's smarter to utilize this employer benefit. My loans are still in their grace period and I have to start paying on the 14,400 next month. According to my employer the 100$ cannot go towards the monthly payment rather in addition to my monthly payment which will be approximately 150$. How much of the 14,400 can I pay off right now and still utilize the full 7000$ benefit? And also how long would it take to pay off the loan Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:51 PM PDT Ok so my estimated debt by the end of school is 30k, I work part time 20-30 hours a week at 13 a hour. How much should I be paying while in school? Also how could I pay that down at all? Honestly it is just giving me a whole lot of grief because I'm a first generation college student, I kinda have no clue how to do so I've been making it up as I go. I refuse to take out private loans. [link] [comments] |
What's the best resource for finding the best private loans? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:15 PM PDT Hey! Currently trying to find a private loan to pay for my senior year fall semester. I live in PA. I am applying for approx. $20k in loans and my mom is the cosigner. Her credit is excellent (800+). I have a few questions and appreciate any help or advice you can give.
I know these are pretty extensive questions, but any help or insight is greatly appreciated! My classes start in less than 3 weeks and I am just so confused by all of this [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:05 PM PDT I'm a sophomore in college and have to pay about $10K for school and my parents won't co-sign a loan and FAFSA did nothing, parents make too much. Also, I have no credit. So is there a loan option out there with no credit and no co-signer? I make just over $1200 a month. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 05:00 PM PDT My (41m) daughter (18f) is starting school in a few weeks at a very expensive school but has gotten about 40k in student aid. My ex (37f) is refusing to co-sign a loan for about 10k a year for her because, "it will hurt my credit score to the point where I won't be able to buy a house." She is a private school teacher making about 40k a year and is worried about debt to income ratio. I've tried to tell her this isn't a big portion of her credit score (likely pretty decent), but she is scared shitless of debt. Would co-signing a loan make a significant negative difference to her score? [link] [comments] |
Sallie Mae wants $90,000 for a $25,000 loan, who can I go to? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:10 PM PDT My mother is a single mother from former Soviet Union and we don't make much money, I applied for Sallie Mae and they're asking for a 12% interest rate. Her credit is good but she has debt from having to borrow for necessities. My job doesn't make much either, what's the best loan company I can go to for low interest? Someone recommended Great Lakes but I see a lot of negative reviews for it. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Have 24k in student loans and need some advice. Posted: 10 Aug 2018 07:50 AM PDT So my loans were on forbearance til today and now I have a $250 payment every month from what I assume, I haven't paid any towards it and I haven't really messed around with anything to do with my student loans until recently. when I went to college in my teens my mom took care of all the "paperwork" and other things so that I could put all focus on learning the curriculum I was given. So a lot of this stuff is new to me and I'm trying to see my options here. Sorry for all this rambling but I guess what I'm trying to say is can somebody plz give me some advice and show me my best course of action? If it matters my student debt was from my time in liberty university and my debt is with navient. [link] [comments] |
Question about school loan starting out Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:29 AM PDT I dont know where to begin and ask for help. My wife is 32 and shes in last year of physical therapy school. Her pre requisites are done and paid for and she needs 30k total. They won't give her any assistance because were not poor. Her credit score is 750 and mine is above that. Her school referred her to Sallie Mae. I heard horrible things about Sallie mae They will give her the money but at 11% interest and she has 6 months to start payments after graduation. My question is what is best way to go about refinancing at at lower rate before payments begin? I'm willing to cosign since she will be unemployed when she apples for refinance. [link] [comments] |
How can I get a loan by next week? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 11:09 AM PDT This summer, I took two courses offered from my school, which has billed me for $2500. Unfortunately, during the time I had a new onset seizure and then followed by another one, so I had to set up payment plans for the emergency room visits, follow-up visits, and brain imaging and testing. I had the money saved up for my summer courses, but now most of it is spent on the medical bills. I even had to medically withdraw from my second class but still ended up having to pay for the class... School starts in a couple weeks and the school is giving me until next week for me to pay for my summer courses or they will drop the class I took from my transcript. If I apply for federal or private loan now, can I still pay in time? [link] [comments] |
