Neighbor tried trimming tree, fell of his ladder, and hurt himself on my yard

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 05:43 PM PDT

A little more context: - The tree originates in my yard, but he was cutting branches off that overhang his yard, not crossing our property line. - It is HIS ladder that HE set up in HIS yard by himself. - He has no help. No safety equipment. No rope to catch the tree to prevent it from falling on and damaging my fence. - He has been drinking and smoking weed. - He didn't ask for permission. Didn't tell us he was going to do anything. Just did it.

Is there any way he can go after us for something that was entirely his fault, he just happened to land in my yard. I have almost an hour worth of videos from him taking hits, to him setting things up on his property, to cutting the branches off.

Is it possible to argue FOR a total loss?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:12 PM PDT

Long story short, I was run off the road by an old man, hopped a curb, and bottomed out on a driveway. The preliminary estimates of damage are ~$7,500, which could increase once they start taking it all apart.

According to KBB, my car in 'very good' condition only has an estimated trade-in value of $7,000-$9,000 and private party sale value of $9,000-$12,000.

So with the estimates, done by the body shop, coming in at $7,500 plus more (if more is discovered) insurance is saying they think it's repairable.

Is it possible to argue for a total loss in this situation? Or is it basically whatever insurance says, goes?

    Car Insurance Payment

    Posted: 11 Aug 2018 03:38 AM PDT

    Hi guys!!

First time visiting this sub, so sorry in advance if this isn't allowed here but it is about car insurance so I figured it would be okay.

I'm with a car insurance that fits a black box, and I paid a £210 deposit, with 10x monthly payments of £75, which was the cheapest insurance I could find.

However, this is where it gets confusing for me and my partner - apparently I put in a claim I had against me wrong when I paid for my quote. So they rang me and said it's go up to £127 monthly payments, which I was fine with, like it was my own fault so I took on responsibility for my mistakes.

This morning, I got an email through from them where I had to sign my agreement (which I'm guessing is a contract) - baring in mind this is a good week after I got the phone call - and the agreement that I just signed said my monthly payments were £75. This is probably a mistake on their behalf, but I'm very confused as to what I'm now paying per month, as the agreement is £75 yet they are telling me directly £127 which I haven't signed an agreement for.

    Any help would be amazing!

    Thank you

Quoted insurance job to replace a tile floor after dishwasher leaked was apporved, now being asked to lower price.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:29 PM PDT

Context, I'm a carpenter who was called to give a quote to fix a water damaged tile floor, rip it out and replace it. I measure things out and write up my quote. As I was there talking to him he shows me the quote from another company was in before me and quoted a ridiculous amount to do the job.

Fast forward a couple weeks and I get an email from his insurance adjuster asking for my GST/business number to confirm who I am so they can send the guy a cheque for the work as the quote was approved. I call the guy to go over this and he tells me that he had a 3rd contractor quote him half of what I quoted for the work and if I could now lower my price. Pretty sure insurance company doesn't know about 3rd contractor and wants to pocket as much as he can.

Is that legal what he's doing? Do I bother lowering my price after the fact? Haven't had experience with insurance jobs before this so I'm not entirely sure what I should do or anything, thanks

How to get “pain and suffering”

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:22 PM PDT

I was in a jet ski crash, I spent 5 days in the hospital after undergoing surgery I spent a month bedridden and now can't do more than walk around enough to pee. I was told I won't be able to return to a "more normal" life for over a year. They've offered me lost wages but I feel as though I deserve more than that due to the large effect it will have on my ability to grow and work in my field for a while down the line.

So how do I go about negotiating pain and suffering and payments on top of lost wages?

Dealership claims I MUST put the car I am buying on my insurance BEFORE I can buy it. What is this?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:15 PM PDT

    Howdy guys,

I'm looking for some input on what I thought was a sort of curious request (well, demand, really) from the dealership today. They are telling me that in order to finalize (actually buy) the car I am getting, I have to have it registered on my insurance BEFOREHAND. I've never heard of this - I thought you had up to 30 days to add a new car to insurance.

Here's the synopsis of it all: I shopped around for a used 2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring. I finally settled on one that had a good price, is CPO, I did a checklist of everything and also ran the VIN number on carfax. Everything about the car checks out. I talked them down to a price that is very reasonable and I made them sign a contract with an itemized list of ALL fees and taxes and the total cost of the car.

I am 100% buying it tomorrow. I wanted to wait because I wanted to see what they could offer me on their financing, although unbeknownst to them (until after they signed the final price agreement), I was already pre-approved for a great rate through USAA. Anyway, point is - I did my due diligence. They urged me to buy today, but I wanted to compare financing rates after theirs came through...which they stalled on (probably because they want to jump it on me tomorrow when I am about to buy). So I'm just accepting the USAA loan tonight.

Anyway, down to the point: they told me that I have to put the new car on my insurance before I buy it. They "cannot" sell it to me or let me drive it off the lot until this is done. I don't know if this is some new regulation, one of their dealership rules, or just arbitrary bullshit. The only thing I can think of is that by having me put it on my insurance before I buy it tomorrow lets them know I am locked-in and committed to buy.

Has anyone heard of this? Why would they want me to do this?

tl;dr Settled on a final price for a car I am buying tomorrow. Dealership says I HAVE to put the new car on my insurance BEFORE I buy it. Why?

    Thanks, y'all.

Had a not-at-fault car accident. Lost two of my insurance discounts anyways. Should I have even bothered to notify my insurance company?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 11:15 AM PDT

I was rear ended by a county government vehicle a couple of months ago. The driver admitted fault, I called my insurer to start the claims process, and everything was paid out and good.

..until my policy renewal. I lost both of my "Premier Safety" and "Accident Forgiveness" discounts because per the insurance rep, my state allows them to remove the discount even for not-at-fault accidents.

This is insane. In the future, for any not at fault accidents, should I even notify my insurer to avoid this BS?

Using vision insurance before leaving current job?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 01:48 PM PDT

I just put in my two-week notice at my current job, and I haven't used the contact lens allowance with the vision insurance that my current employer provides, MetLife. Can I use it without it affecting the vision insurance from my new employer (MedEye)? Thank you!

ER out-of-network visit in CA, from MA

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 01:19 PM PDT

My wife and I live in Massachusetts and she was visiting California for a conference when she had a medical emergency which required a hospital stay for mental health reasons.

She was taken by ambulance to a general hospital where she was admitted and was required to stay for approximately a week. As far as I can tell her insurance (HMO) in-network only covers the New England area, everything else is out-of-network.

I've been monitoring her claims on the insurance company's website and saw that a recent claim was completed, for the hospital stay. The original bill is for around $60k, but her insurance only paid $14k to the hospital. Will we be billed by the hospital for the remainder? I've been reading up on balance billing laws that affect both MA and CA but I'm confused about this particular situation.

It seems like for an emergency situation that she had no control over which hospital she was going/there were no in-network hospitals in the area, and they wouldn't let her leave on her own will, should be billed at the normal in-network rates, and we should only required to pay the deductible/out of pocket max. But I don't understand the process enough to know what's going on behind the scenes right now. I'm just staring at this $46k difference wondering if we'll need to come up with a way to pay that.

[California] Condo Insurance - What is a reasonable rate? Should I include a high replacement cost as part of the policy?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:07 PM PDT

I just bought a new condo, and I just got quoted $165/month premiums from Amica, which seems to be an absurd cost. Google seems to indicate that the average is significantly lower than that, and as far as I can tell the main reasons come down to the replacement cost; the agent is suggesting I include $200,000 replacement cost coverage.

My question is: is this normal? Should I be concerned about what seems to be an extraordinarily high insurance rate?

In the market for new Auto Insurance

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 03:48 PM PDT

So I've had AAA for 10 years, my insurance has been steadily increasing over the years and last Winter I had an "At Fault/Non Injury" claim and that shot up my insurance by $100. Even with that I feel I'm paying too much, especially since I'm driving an older car. So I'm looking for a new insurance, and checking all the quotes there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between companies. I imputed exactly the same policy details, some I even included my last claim and it's still cheaper than AAA. Little bit about myself I'm 28, M, single driving a '98 Camry.

    Paper ID card?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 07:26 PM PDT

Just got a new ID card for my student health insurance, and they say that I have to print it out at home (!), cut out two pieces of paper and glue the two sides together (!!).

Are you kidding me? What kind of service is that? Why can't the insurance company just mail me a normal plastic ID card? Is that the new trend with insurance now or something?

I tried calling them and they basically told me to fuck off. Is there any other way around this? (It's United Healthcare btw)

Why do homeowner insurances look so complicated?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 07:17 PM PDT

So, I need some roof fixing (nothing bad) and I started looking into my homeowners insurance and after an hour that seemed like an eternity and reading 54 pages of insurance jargon, I am even more confused. I want to understand my policy, and make changes if needed.

    • What are the things you wish you had known about homeowners insurances?
    • Additional (other than the default) coverages I should be looking into?

I dont live in flood zone..somehow the builders argued that the nebhourhood should be a non flood zone (I dont know much about the history, but along other things the builder sounds shady)

CA: I need to get my wife health insurance coverage that will cover psychologists without breaking the bank.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 02:53 PM PDT

Title says most but my current employer does not cover spousal insurance (I've asked but it's something that will come out of pocket from me and it isn't cheap). Because of this, I am unsure of where I should begin looking to get my wife good health coverage that I can compare cost and network providers? I am pretty new to this but it's something we've put off long enough. I would also appreciate maybe a ballpark cost for health coverage in CA would be helpful too? What's too much to pay for a single person health insurance with the information given?

    Medical payment question (automobile)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 11:24 AM PDT

So this is a hypothetical situation, but let's say you cause an accident and are hurt in the crash. Who pays your medical bills?

Also, if you are hurt in an accident by yourself (I.e. drove off road and flipped into a ditch), does insurance still apply?

Damage to a motor vehicle from a jet ski on a trailer.... marine insurance or auto insurance?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:50 PM PDT

Long story short, my neighbor failed to secure a trailer with two jet skis on it after unhooking it from his vehicle. The trailer rolled back and hit my car. The collision occurred after the trailer owner had already left. The damaged vehicles were discovered by me. Majority of the damage to my vehicle was caused by one of the jet skis. The owner of the skis/trailer gave the police officer his Marine insurance (Geico) information since the documentation said it covered the skis and the trailer the skis are stored on. I just called Geico, and they are saying it should go through auto insurance.

My insurance is Farmer's. I haven't called them because I am not at fault - the owner of the trailer is. I really dont want/can't fork out my $500 deductible and then have Farmers fight it out with Geico. Thoughts?

    Edit: Occured in Utah

    Fraud Prevention Question

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 10:35 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I hit some flying debris that came out of a truck bed this week while driving to work and have been getting quotes for the damage before approaching my insurance company. In the meantime, I lowered my deductibles because I'm going to have to pay a lot with my current one and don't want this situation again in the future. Now it's looking like the damages will exceed my prior $1000 deductible. I've already changed my deductibles and I don't want to commit insurance fraud. How do I approach a claim under these circumstances? Can I approach a claim now? Thanks!

    Deductibles with Multiple Insurance Coverage

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 10:23 AM PDT

My wife is currently pregnant and going through prenatal care. She is covered under my work plan, and her parents have also left her on their plan. We were told her parents' plan had to be primary, even though I prefer my plan and is much easier to deal with.

Two questions have come up though:

1 The primary insurance won't submit EOBs to the secondary. So, for every visit, my insurance is denying the claim until I send them a useless EOB that her parents have to get from their company. Is that legit, or should they be sending the EOBs over themselves?

2 While trying to find the answer to #1, I read something online that said both deductibles would have to be met before they'd start paying. My plan (secondary) has a $2000 deductible, but her parents' has something like $4000. I was under the assumption that mine would start paying co-insurance at $2000. Is that not the case?

Health insurance for a young healthy family

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 11:36 AM PDT

    Good day,

Switched jobs and have been on cobra for the past two months. My wife gave birth to our second child and everything was smooth as can be and ready to move onto cheaper insurance. I work for a small business that does not offer insurance yet. And I am located in Indiana.

I have a quote from a couple of "non Obama care" plans that you must qualify for. No problems there but just trying to figure out what's the best option.

I have one quote from a private company that is 528 a month Cigna network PPO. It covers regular doctor visits, $500 deductible for accidents and 4000/ deductible for catastrophic coverages. It also includes a short term disability payout.

I've been offered a short term plan. The premiums are cheaper, with varying rates depending on the deductible, however the deductible resets every quarter.

I've also been offered to look into the medishare Christian health sharing. I'm not religious in the slightest but whatever I'll say I'm whatever you want me to be if it gets me cheaper Heath care. I actually liked the price and coverage of the medishare except one big oops. If you are in a motorcycle accident it only covers max 100k and no racing coverage. I'm not a active racer anymore but sometimes I do race motorcycles from time to time.

I have a family of 4. 27/28/4/0 and all very healthy non smokers. I can afford the 500/month but it's still a lot of money. It's nearly the cost of my mortgage. It would help if I could pay this pretax like an employer plan but this doesn't seem possible. The short term is the most affordable premium wise, but essentially only the most catastrophic accidents would make any sense. At a cost of around 200/month just seems like a lot of money to throw away.

It seems at this point to take the plan that is 500/month and suck it up. Or go into the cheapest short term plan and try and stack away as much as possible into a HSA which I have almost maxed out this year already to pay for the birth of my daughter because my current insurance even though expensive is nearly useless as well.

It's so hard to look for this stuff because it seems it's all hard sells and not a lot of education. And it's all really frustrating due to the costs and complexity of it all.

    Thanks for the help

    HELP! COBRA Explanation. UT, US

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 09:16 AM PDT

My current job's insurance coverage ends August 31, as my last work day is today. At my new company, insurance coverage does not begin until Nov 1, as it doesn't go into effect until the first day of the next month, following 60 days of employment.

I know I can have a 90-day lapse in coverage and not have incur a ACA penalty, but my worry is about pre-existing conditions. My wife has depression/anxiety issues and meds, and in the past, we've been required to provide proof of prior continued coverage in order for the condition to not qualify as pre-existing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for information on whether I need to purchase COBRA for the time period where we won't have coverage in order to not be lumped into the PEC category for this? Or just basic information on whether according to my plan, something would fall under pre-existing? The medical plan is Blue Cross Blue Shield

Continuation of employe life insurance? Or other ideas?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 07:28 AM PDT

My husband has life insurance through his (corporate) job. He wants to leave for an offer at a smaller company that has same pay and medical, but no life insurance. If he died, I'd be ruined. I couldn't make the mortgage on my salary. From what I can tell, he will *never * get life insurance on the private market. He's 47, has high blood pressure (still high with meds) and his record says that in one occasion his blood pressure was high due to alcohol use. EDIT- he had told his doctor that he is concerned about his drinking so I'm sure that is written down. And he's on antidepressants

I had this fantasy idea and was wondering if there was anything we could do. Can you ask the ex employer if you can stay on the policy, and pay the premiums yourself? Like the way you can with medical coverage. It's probably a ridiculous idea, I know.

this corporate job will kill him with stress. He's worked for the smaller company before and knows he likes it. He only left for salary reasons. They want him back so badly that they matched his other salary.

I'M terrified of being financially ruined if he died. I work at a non profit doing necessary work that I adore.

If anyone has ANY thoughts about this situation that could help, even beyond my basic question, is appreciate it (not judge.. Like, please don't say tell your husband to lower his blood pressure.. If I could do that, I would have) Thank you

I( MA driver) was Rear ended in NY by driver in rental sprinter. Car is drivable. Pros and cons of using my (geico) insurance and having them recoup the cost?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 02:47 PM PDT

Since I've never gone through this before not sure of the benefits of using my coverage and having Geico recoup the cost from the other company. I have a deductible waiver and rental car coverage included in my coverage.

Would this cause my rates to change or go up?

Should I just go directly through the other insurance company?
