[PA] Medicaid case worker just told me I will be owing $1,000/month due to a medicaid overpayment, on the verge of an emotional breakdown. Advice appreciated.

Last year I finished college and wasn't making a lot of money so I applied for medicaid. After submitting all of my documents including my W2 (~$12,000 in 2016) and recent paystubs showing that I made less than 1300/month, I was approved.

In October of this year, I picked up a lot of overtime in preparation for being out of work for an upcoming surgery and my income for the year shot up to ~$19,200.

Most months I was under the limit, but medicaid only looks at the year-to-date in order to calculate how much money you made every month. They said I made an average of ~$1600/month over the course of 12 months.

So because I went over, the woman from Welfare called me and told me that I'll have an overpayment of $1,000/month to pay Medicaid back and that I'll receive paperwork in the mail.

$1,000/month is literally what I take home every month after taxes if I'm lucky. I asked her how she expected me to pay that when I need to pay for car insurance, college loans, and now (most likely) health insurance.

She basically said that it wasn't her problem and to wait for paperwork in the mail.

I guess it's my fault for making more than I should have. I had a lot of medical issues that I needed to take care of, so the medicaid was essential in helping me pay for surgeries, doctors appointments, etc.

Now I'm going to have to find a way to pay this money and I have no idea what to do. I probably can't pay what they ask. Am I going to jail?

Is there any way for this to be forgiven? Given what's already on my plate, and my emotional and medical problems (currently see a psychologist and physical therapist regularly), I have no idea what to do.

I haven't worked in a month due to my knee surgery and I'll only be working two days a week for the next month or two while I recover. I'm in a pickle.

Welfare lady also said that my medical coverage will "roll over to the affordable care act" once my medicaid ends this month.

I have no idea what's going on and I'm kind of freaking out because my mom is permenantly disabled and makes less money than I do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[USA][WA] Wife is concerned about the cost of our home insurance claim, worried that we will be dropped or have our premiums raised by a large amount.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 06:31 PM PST

Apologies in advance if this is not the right place for this type of post.

Location: Greater Seattle Area Provider: Allstate Premiums: unknown, I'll get this info when I can

My home flooded due to a faulty dishwasher and Allstate is covering the water mitigation and repair of the hardwood floors. The floors will need to be sanded and refinished at minimum, or replaced (More on this below). We had two separate flooring companies give estimates - one that I picked and one that the insurance company recommended. Both companies said the floors could be sanded and refinished once more before replacement is required, but they could also recommend a replacement to the insurance company. They said if it was their floors they would want the replacement It looks like insurance will approve for the floor replacement based on my talk with the adjustor.

My wife is concerned that the extra cost to the insurance company of all new flooring vs sanding and refinishing could cause Allstate to raise our premiums significantly or drop us. I'm concerned that if we refinish and our floors cannot be refinished again, it could bite us down the road if we need/want to replace the floors or sell the house.

Do my wife's concern about having our premiums significantly raised or getting dropped entirely have merit?

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Do I need auto insurance to operate a company vehicle for company business?

Two forms of insurance, confused about coordination.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 11:47 PM PST

I'm not sure where to start on this but I'll get all of the information down.

I live in Ohio and I have 2 forms of insurance. I think (?) my primary issue the past has always been Medicaid because it's been my moms plan my whole life and she was my primary caregiver. I just turned 20 and got switched over to my own Medicaid plan because I'm disabled. I just realized that I also am covered by medical mutual through my fathers work plan.

At this point I haven't yet let all my medical providers know that I have another insurance because I frequently am in the ER and impatient care and I'm scared it won't cover everything or will end up costing me money I don't have. Also I don't really have a relationship with my father and I don't like the idea of his knowing everything I do medically. It seems that I can't even make an account to view my benefits through him because the insurance card I have from him just says his name and member ID number.

I don't know much about this stuff so basically I was really wondering what happens when I tell my providers about this other insurance? It's my primary now, right? Will Medicaid cover what medical mutual doesn't? Should I ask my father to drop me from the plan or would it make more sense for me to stay on it. And I was looking at getting a surgery that has to be pre approved, both plans have different requirements for what is considered medically necessary, if the primary denies can the secondary approve? I hope I covered everything here. Could anyone help me out here? Thanks!

2010 Toyota Prius Totaled, Mechanic/Service Manager offered to buy car if I buyback from my insurance. Should I consider this?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 11:13 PM PST

Hi everyone, I ran over some debris on the freeway and per the Toyota Dealership the Engine Harness needs to be replaced due to damage as well as the ABS sensor and the bumper etc. The car runs but the brakes felt weaker. My insurance totaled the car since the engine harness replacement part is already $3000-$4000. The Dealership's initial estimate for repair was $8000+. My Insurance called me yesterday and told me the initial settlement estimate is about $10,000. Today I went to collect my belongings and a Toyota Service Manager ( who says he was a mechanic for 16 years before this) offered to buy the car from me if I do a buyback from my insurance. He stated that he needed a commuter car and that he'll fix it. Basically he said he will pay for the buyback and throw in a little more. He mentioned somewhere around $1000 all depending on what my insurance says is the buyback amount. What are the pros and cons to doing this? Will this decision affect my insurance in some way or how they perceive me ( I imagine I would not tell them I'm selling)? Will it lengthen the process with my insurance? And of course I don't know the guy, so it's totally possible it all falls through. Would love to hear your input. Thanks in advance!

Progressive denied my Cash Value Comp, what does this report mean and why?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 08:20 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/nt6zGyg

In short, they valued my total pontiac g5 2007 at 3500 ish minus the deductible. I thought that was a little know. Now I understand that most people think their cars are worth more than they are, but in my case even though the car was 10 years old at the time of totaled, it only had 77k miles and was pretty much garage kept with no mechanical issues and only generic scratches and stuff

That's not really the issue though. My main problem is that they used 7 car within 75 miles of me to come up with that number and 5/7 of them had way higher mileage and other issues so they were listed lower. in the 3400 ranges.

So I did my research and found cars of the same year closer to my mileage within 2kish, and they were listed higher than the comps they game me. Around 5500 to 6000.

So my agent gets back to me with this paper. The check paid off my loan so I'm not too peeved but few more bucks would be nice

Life insurance for medical marijuana patient?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 12:54 PM PST

Hi y'all, I'm a non-smoking marijuana user (edibles) with a prescription for my ADHD (in California). Anyone know of the companies that give the fairest life insurance rate for medical users? I just wrapped up a month long hassle with one company that multiplied my initial quote by more than four when I informed them of my prescription. Even though I don't even smoke...unreal.

Insurance company changed my title to salvage?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 06:11 PM PST

My car was hit in a parking lot a couple of months ago. The car was parked and nobody was inside. The claim (damages) was for approximately $4200.

Fast forward until today Im weighing my options on whether to refinance or trade the car in.

The trade in or wholesale value of the car is approximately $5500 (with a clean title). I owe $7,000 on it. But have now been told its worth approximately $2,000.

After being approved through my credit union for a lower rate I recieved a call back informing me they could no longer go through with the financing after finding out the car now has a salvage title. Nor is any dealership going to give me full value for the vehicle.

    So, my questions are these.

    1) Can the insurance company just change the title to salvage without notifying me? Can they even do that without totaling the car?

I was not given a choice nor did I sign anything.

    2) What are my options at this point? What are the laws and what rights do I have? Id obviously prefer not to have to sue them. But its clear someone fucked up.

By the way this is the largest well known insurance company in the US, not some fly by night state outfit.

On a side note, the accident also shows up on my IIR as an at fault accident, and my rates have gone up. This Im pretty sure I can fix on my own though. Its just another showing of incompetence with the same company

    [USA][CA] Check engine light age?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 03:42 PM PST

I was rear-ended in my car in Late December in my 2007 Subaru STI. The damage was relatively light, but a check engine light came on almost instantly. I stopped at an Autozone and had them scan the code to see if the car was safe to drive, and they told me that it was a "PO442" - which is a small leak in the evaporative system. They told me it was likely a loose gas cap, so I bought a new gas cap, and they reset the code for me.

Another 15 minutes down the road, the check engine light returned, so I figured that something got knocked loose and let it be.

Last week, I dropped my car off at the body shop for repairs, and today I received an email telling me that the check engine light was unrelated to the accident since the code was "old".

Can somebody explain what an "old code" is? When I asked the adjuster what that meant, she wasn't able to give me any information.

    Thanks!

What are my rights as a third-party Total Auto Loss claimant in Philly, PA

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 03:34 PM PST

Hello everyone, I've read the valuable advice of many insurance professionals on this site and this is my first post.

My car got hit by someone, who in turn admitted fault to me and the police. His insurance (State Farm) called me the next day and admitted liability. I had my car (2010 Rx350) towed to the collision shop of my choice (which was also a State Farm Select Service shop). A couple of days later State Farm called to say they are declaring a total loss and on my request emailed me a valuation report (Audatex Autosource generated) 6 days after the accident. I don't have collision coverage with my insurance and they told me to deal with State Farm. My questions to redditers are:

    1) A Towing package and Roof rack installed by the dealer were not included. I call and requested them included. They did, but I only see a Towing package adjustment in the NADA valuation, and a Roof Rack adjustment in the Comps in the Autosource valuation. Shouldn't there be two adjustment in each (Autosource and NADA)? When I asked State Farm, they said it should already have been taken into account in the base values. But none of the Comps have those options listed in the descriptions. ( All 4 Comps have been sold and I cannot verify from the dealers)

    2) When I insisted that the adjustment for Towing package be made for the Comps, the State Farm adjuster said that it was in the hands of Audatex Autosource (the company) as they were the independent valuers. The adjuster wanted to call the Autosource staff to inquire about the possibility of running a new report with the correct options included. The call ended and 10 min later the adjuster called back. Apparently the Autosource personnel advised that two of the Comps in the current report had "expired" (this was 3 days after the report was generated) and that they can "remove" those two before re-running the report with just the two remaining Comps again. But they had also advised if they do that the valuation would go down. The State Farm adjuster had stopped Autosource from running another report because State Farm didn't want the value to go down. So the original report stands as it is. Now, none of this makes sense to me. Am I being taken for a ride? Can't the State Farm login to Autodex Autosource, input the correct data, and run a fresh valuation using the updated current database? This shouldn't take more than 1 min!

    3) The data for 2 out of the 4 Comps were gathered 105 and 95 days prior the the day of the accident through a "leading internet site" according to the description by Autosource. What is the limit of days for Comp data? e.g: Can they pull a Comp from 6 months ago? The third Comp was from 31 days ago and the fourth on the same day as the accident.

    4) I combed Autotrader.com for same year models as my car, and there were 9 similarly trim models on sale within 250 miles. I adjusted the list price for typical negotiation and mileage difference using the same criteria Autosource had used on their 4 Comps. (My car is reported as "Typical" in the report and no condition adjustments have been made). The average value of my 9 Comps was ~$14,800 vs $11,500 for the 4 Comps in the report ($3,300 higher). I took out the 2 most expensive and 2 least expensive cars from my list and the average for the remaining 5 Comps was still $2,400 higher. So I think State Farm should offer me more. I sent all these details to State Farm but there is no response. What are my chances of convincing State Farm to consider my data? I would think Autosource should have these cars in their database.

    5) Now the legal stuff.... what are my rights as a third party in PA? Am I at the mercy of what State Farm says and offers? I don't want to sue the other driver (that car insurance was registered to a company, so I might have to go after the driver's company anyway). Can I ask for an independent appraisal? Is State Farm obliged to negotiate in good faith with me? How long do I have to close this deal?

    Thank you.

[USA] [MO] [CofSTL] Contents insurance for vacant property.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 01:49 PM PST

    Greetings, Insurance.

My partner and I are finishing the rehab from hell. It is about to go on the market, and is fully staged (rented furniture), but we have just realised that the staging company expects us to replace anything that gets damaged (we thought they self-covered and the cost was included in the rental fee. While increasing the Renovators insurance to account for the increased value of the property we double-checked the Staging agreement to discover that we're liable). Unfortunately, our current insurer does not provide contents insurance, and being from outside the US, we are not familiar with local arrangements.

Can we get some advice/suggestions of providers to allow us to cover the contents while it in the process of being sold. Alternatively, we'd be happy to move providers completely to someone who would cover both the building and the contents.

    Thanks in advance.

    Question Regarding Writeoff

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 12:36 PM PST

Hello, first time posting here so I apologize if there's a better place to post, or if I should be flairing it or anything like that.

My girlfriend has a 2010 Mazda 3 GS, 150000km on it. She only has liability insurance, and unfortunately she just hit a tree a day or two ago. We took it to an autobody shop - they deemed the vehicle a total loss. They're stating that from the looks of it, the vehicle was previously written off and someone just filled it and fix the frame, but that this vehicle shouldn't have even been sold the way it was. She was not aware of that.

She only has liability, so it does not cover this. We're new to the whole "write off" situation, and looking for guidance.

I was advised that even though she does not have coverage, she needs to contact her insurance and inform them. I was told they will send out an adjuster who will assess the damage, and then they will "write off" the vehicle, and provide her with a check for the amount they deem the car to be worth. Is this how that works?

Additionally, I'm told they'll often try and lowball or pay the lowest value they can. How can we improve the odds of her getting more, and what should we do? She's already stressing completely regarding transportation to work and getting a new vehicle and all of that, so I'm trying to take some stress off of her and help her however I can.

Any advice on the process, pointers, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you very much!

    Insurance cost/effect

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 11:17 AM PST

I've recently bought a car in full and when signing the title I put my own name. Further due, I have no problem with this as though my insurance rates would be the main issue. Would it be possible to insure my vehicle in my name under my parents policy? I'm trying to have the lowest costs I can but still doing this whole process legally. Honestly I just want to have insurance just to have it. Its a cheap car that I want no premiums on, just liability. I'm looking not to spend over 100 per month at least. I also live in Chicago

Anyone know anything about MOBE? (BCBS IL)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 10:15 AM PST

I got a package from my insurer (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois) offering me this free service. The testimonials in the package talked about understanding why one was prescribed certain pills and about methods to manage chronic pain. I consider myself informed about my medical issues and don't have chronic pain, but when I called to find out what this service is—admittedly because the packaging included a $50 Amazon gift card that is only activated when I register—they said they might be able to help me with the issues I do have.

A "Guide," who is supposedly a healthcare practitioner of some sort but hasn't revealed her background to me, called me today for an introduction. She wasn't clear on what services they would be offering me. Or maybe I don't see how they will help. She is going to tell me a "story," presumably about another client who overcame or managed my issues. Then she said she would give me some "silence" during which I would process what I got from this story.

I asked where she could point me to research that suggested this would be helpful. She was vague. I said pointedly that new programs like this happen either because research drives a change in modality, or because someone charismatic comes up with a service to charge people for, and develops a cult. She then mentioned something about "Blue Zone" research. Which is fine, and I'm willing to eat more beans and vegetables, but I honestly am not giving up chocolate or red meat, or faking a belief in religion.

I'm going to try it, less from a belief that it will actually do something, and more to try to learn WTF is going on.

But I wondered if anyone had any experience with this company and knows who is paying for it and who benefits?

Cheapest insurance for a first time driver?

I work as a software engineer, and Farmers gave me a quote for $390 (6 months) and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way I can get an even lower quote.

What can my friend do about car accident (TX)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 06:49 AM PST

Sorry for bad formatting, on mobil.

Ok so I am writing this for a friend who is freaking out. A couple weeks ago my friend was driving and was hit. The way the intersection she was hit in is like this: so there is a main road, at this section of this main road there is a stop sign and you can either turn into the neighborhood or go straight. About 20 to 30 feet into the neighborhood there starts the side streets, all side streets have yield signs.

So friend was coming out of the neighborhood and was at the side street that was 20 to 30 feet from the main road. She saw a car on the main road stopped at the stop sign, can't tell if she is in the straight or turn lane. She goes to turn left going to the main road, other lady turns, speeds up and slams into the rear passanger side of friends van.

After the accident other lady gets out of her car and starts screaming at my friend while friend was trying to check on her kids, friend calls police, they come make a report, refuse to give friend the ladies insurance info and send everyone on their way. A few days later friend gets report where the police clearly state it was other ladies fault. Friend files an insurance claim as the back end of her van is messed up.

Yesterday ladies insurance calls friend and says they are finding their client not at fault and it doesn't matter what the police report says as that is only "the officers opinion". So friend is freaking out because she doesn't have the $250 her insurance requires to fix her car (We work retail for barely above minimum wage). I told her she needs to talk to her insurance about fighting the other ladies insurance finding.

My questions for her are: can the insurance agent for 1 of the people in the accident really determine who is or is not at fault despite what the police report says? What can she do to have this lady held accountable? Are there any other steps she should be taking?

Sorry this got long and thank you for any advice.

[USA] [FL] Why are Florida's insurance sales & licensing regulations so liberal?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 02:47 PM PST

    Here's the rant:

I tried getting a quote online for homeowners insurance in Florida. But when that happens, a page either says that the insurance companies are prohibited from selling insurance in Florida OR an insurance company uses a partner company to sell insurance.

AND, this also applies to automotive warranties. Every automotive warranty must have their contract underwritten by a Florida-based (and licensed) company.

So, that means, for example, you try to get Allstate Homeowner's Insurance, it's really Castle Key Insurance Company.

Now, I understand that Florida's insurance licensing regulations are so liberal, that it's impossible to get a nationally recognized homeowner's insurance policy in Florida. And you can't even get a quote online.

Why does Florida have all these stupid and liberal laws? If you think they're stupid, should Floridians vote to repeal them?

Progressive taking 5 days to inspect after flood.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 07:10 AM PST

So after 5 days of running dehumidifiers and fans the area is pretty dry. It doesn't look like there was 3 inches of standing water from my kitchen into living room and laundry room anymore. What's the point of an adjuster coming out after 5 days? And how does the adjuster tell if the floor under the tiling is damaged without pulling it up?
