I made a website to lookup the revenue of millions of small businesses

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:48 AM PST

I'm not sure if this is allowed but I thought it'd be useful for people here. (I'm currently not running any ads or paywalls on the website)

As a side project to learn web development, I decided to make a website that formalized something I had been doing myself with Excel files -- researching small business opportunities.

The US Government released a lot of business data through the FOIA and I created a model to estimate the revenue on over 10 million small businesses.

I invest in small businesses and was looking for new startup opportunities and found the ability to quickly look up the size of a small business extremely useful for understanding different markets. I coded up a website using Django, Bootstrap, and other web frameworks to search and analyze this data.

You can lookup businesses by name, location, revenue range, industry, and headcount and click on a company to see how it compares to similar businesses.

Here's the link for anyone interested:

Can someone provide some ideas or point me in the right direction for some ideas of how my small business can support and give back to the local community?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:38 AM PST

I'm starting a cookie business on the side, selling at farmer's markets, events, coffee shops, cafes, and locally-owned grocery stores. I have a job and am doing this as a sort of passion project. I have professional experience with cooking and baking so that part isn't tricky.

What I'm struggling with is what I want to do with the profits and what I want to do if this takes off and I need to hire employees or get more involved with distribution and what not. I'd like to give back to the community, hire people that could really use a job, work with causes and organizations that are good for the local people/community, etc.

I'm just kind of overwhelmed with this because I don't really know where to look, who to support, etc. I know this is kind of a vague question but just looking for a direction or even some stories/articles about a small business and what they offer to their community. Thank you.

    How to train new employees

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 07:52 AM PST

I'm at the exciting point where I'll get to bring on my first employee to help me out part time. It's a someone who will be helping out with some administrative tasks, data entry, some customer service, etc. He works part time at a manufacturing facility while completing college online this semester. He'll be helping me out 2 days a week. If he shows interest & picks up on things, I'd love to bring him on full-time once he's done with school.

Most of what he'll be helping with at the start is straight forward and will require little training. Mainly just some direction/oversight from me. My hope though is that business continues picking up and thus so do his responsibilities & it get's to the point that I can (sooner than later) bring him on full-time.

The business is a logistics company. I've been doing this for years, have been in management, sales, done consulting...I know it well. He's 100% green. I'm confident in my ability to train someone from the ground up...but I also don't want to bore him to death. Looking back at when I trained, companies used a combination of classroom-type settings, online videos, deskside training, etc to help me learn. All I have right now, is him doing deskside training and I fear that would be boring as can be, let's be honest.

I haven't been able to find any good videos on YouTube. I'm more than happy to pay for something that offers Logistics training materials, I just haven't been able to find anything besides an online college course, or similar, for ~$500/course. Any suggestions on where to look??

Edit: Re-worded the post to get my question answered :)

Does an LLC need income to leverage the home office deduction?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:53 AM PST

I'm planning on starting an LLC for a blogging/content creation side project outside of my main employment. I will be legitimately using a room in a home for LLC purposes only (regular/exclusive, as required).

I really don't expect to receive a nickel until I develop content and get it viewed. Would I still be able to make use of the tax deductions despite no LLC income?

Looking to purchase the building I work in, what's the best entity to form?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 10:34 AM PST

Looking to purchase the commercial space that I'm working in. I've been advised to form a separate entity for protection. But I'm wondering what the best entity to form for it is. I've asked and done some research and have gotten mixed answers from ppl. There's not going to be any other investors or divdends paid out. Simply me buying the building and paying my new company rent each month.

S Corp? LLC? C Corp? Any one have any experience? TIA!

How to improve tech stack as solopreneur?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:17 AM PST

To keep it simple I run a service based business that doesn't use much tech at all. You could think of me as a mobile mechanic. I want to use tech more, and I would really appreciate any notes/leads/books/videos on how I can better incorporate tech into my business to improve efficiency.

    Thanks!

For those of you who manufacture branded products in China, do you worry about trademark squatting?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 10:30 AM PST

Specifically, squatters filing a trademark and holding your shipments hostage in customs? If so, did you spend the money to file a trademark in China?

Notify customer when order is ready via Square.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:50 AM PST

I started up a popup bbq business, and recently took over a steak night at a local bar. Somewhere between 20-30 steaks a night. The problem is trying to contact them when their order is ready.

I use a Square Terminal, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to text them when their order is ready. Ideally, I'd use the equipment I have, rather than getting a paging system. Anyone here have success with paging the customer with Square POS?

Anyone used wireless connectivity service for small business? Is it reliable?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:00 AM PST

Did anyone use wireless connectivity router for your business? Is it reliable? How much are you paying for it? I'm thinking about switching because our mall wire box is kept being cut by random homeless or junkie and cause internet down for 2-3 business days.

Have $50k in savings, secured equipment financing for 6.4% towards 25k/50k to purchase food truck. Should I finance the full amount, or half the amount to save on interests/monthly payment?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:41 AM PST

Hello all, I managed to secure some financing for 6.4% ($3,200 a year) on a loan of 50,000 for 60 months.

I also have some savings, and I wanted to know what would be a smart decision in terms of financing a food truck.

Should I do the full amount with an $1,100 a month monthly payment, or put half the amount myself... finance 25K and deal with a lower monthly?

    New prospective business question

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:30 AM PST

Hello everyone! I am a 31 year old that would like to start his own small electronic repair business. I can work on electronics and have a good understanding of them. I would like to work out of the home I live in. I have plenty of space for my own area. I've never done anything like this (opening a business) so I have a few questions. 1. I'm not sure where to start? What do I need to research? 2. How would I compete with other big box stores? 3. Should I be using an LLC? 4. Any tips before I drop money on this venture?

The upfront cost isn't that expensive as it's all just small hand tools. I would eventually upgrade all of them.

    Insider Knowledge

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 06:55 AM PST

    Hi all,

I have a question for you.

If you're looking to start a B2B service it's no secret that you need to know the needs of a business to know what services to offer.

How then do you gain insider knowledge of a business or industry without having to work in that industry?

Question: do y’all have any experience in starting more than 1 small biz at a time?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:03 AM PST

Context: I currently run a small business with a focus on resin art— more specifically, home goods, jewelry/accessories, and artisan keycaps.

I was thinking of branching out a bit more & leaning into my passion for illustrative/traditional art, which includes wanting to start selling prints & stickers. I don't want to muddle the brand I've made with another art niche, as I feel like that can get messy and confusing for the consumer!

So I was thinking of starting an Etsy shop, or even branding my illustrations under my personal name as another "small biz". Do y'all have any thoughts or experiences with that? I'm not sure what would be the best course of action, so I'm open to any feedback or ideas!

Family business. We are an S corp. My dad wants to stop receiving payroll and wants me to add myself onto the payroll as manager, essentially taking over while he keeps the business. Is this possible? Is there anything I should look out for? Thank you.

Does anyone use outsourced SDRs for B2B prospecting?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:47 AM PST

One of my big limitations is I haven't been able to find a FT salesperson who's good and affordable enough without me having to hold their hand along the way. We are a custom high-volume bakery.

I was kind of interested in one of these outsourced SDR sales companies how can help with the initial prospecting new clients.

Does anyone have experience with outsource SDRs? I imagine they would help with the prospecting and then transfer to an inside sales/account manager if a viable customer. I would want all US-based

Hello! I just opened my own small business selling a service November 2020. It’s been the best year of my life! However, there’s one small thing that I can’t seem to wrap my head around. Can someone please explain tax resale certificates like I’m five.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:47 AM PST

It seems like you get this certificate so that you do not have to purchase items you're hoping to resell with tax. However, you then have to pay the tax that you didn't pay originally to the government anyways after the fact. So what's the point of having one? It seems like I have to be completely wrong or else it just wouldn't make sense to go through the trouble and paperwork of paying tax after when I can just pay it up front. Thanks for letting me ask a dumb question!

Project Management Software With Specific Scheduling Feature

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST

    Hey all,

I am hoping someone can help me narrow down some options to try out. My projects follow the same basic timeline template (task A done after x number of days and so on) however they start at varying times throughout the month so it would be nice to be able to create a template that automatically schedules tasks such as the following:

3 days after start date do this task

10 days after start date do this task

I have found plenty of PM tools that have a template and I could go through each project and calculate and then update the day but I would prefer to try and find a better way. I have also considered making a more in depth Excel sheet as I am still a small business with a manageable number of clients but Excel is limited enough that I dont see it being beneficial long term. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    Disgruntled Team

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:45 AM PST

    Advice needed…thanks in advance.

Backstory—-I'm the owner of a small business of 20 people. I promoted one of the team members to 33 dollars an hour while most make 17-25 or so. This specific person has great potential and makes the company more money with good decisions. Our receptionist handed his check to one of the other team members and the word grew like wild fire. Everyone is livid. I apologized individually for any disrespect and at a weak moment said it was a bad decision to give him a raise of that magnitude to some of them. Mentioning that I'll work towards a system for pay scales. After discussing individually they seem better but have trust issues. The trust is me paying fair in their eyes and taking care of them.

There are still some going person to person gossiping and trying to stir the pot. We stopped handing out pay stubs for obvious reasons and one team member is trying to "catch me" in the meeting Monday on what I'm trying to sneak and not paying and treating everyone fair.

Any advice on how to handle this would be much appreciated.

Should I be opening (business) banking accounts for every business I start regardless if I make -$50/mo, $1/mo or $10k/mo?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:37 AM PST

We can ignore the bank fees. It's not about the fees. It's about organization, simplicity, minimizing time consumption, streamlining, categorization, less stress.

I've been coming up with some ideas. Startup is extremely cheap.

On a personal level, it seems excessive to have 10 bank accounts for 10 different businesses. On the other hand, you really want to separate your revenue and expenses, so it's a necessary evil.

Like a blog for example. That's really cheap. $50/yr

Then I have peerspace. I can rent my place out hourly for a film shoot. Doesn't cost a thing to startup.

    Then there's the professional photography.

    Then there's there's Uber/Lyft and Turo.

You wouldn't want to mix your revenue and expenses from Peerspace with Turo, right?
