Getting rid of problem clients how to do it diplomatically

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:36 AM PST

I took on a client that has turned out to be a nightmare. It was meant to be 8 hours a week but there expectations are out of this world it's a full time job.

I did my 8 hours on Friday and got a text message on Saturday asking for me to work for free over the weekend to finish everything, to which my response was I don't work weekends and its the Christmas and New year period, you are lucky I worked on Friday at all.

I checked my emails and what they want is days and days of work and they are questioning what I actually did in the 8 hours, I work each week. You know the type, it should have only taken 2 minutes!!!

I'm steaming mad now and don't want to touch the client ever again, they are just bad news. My question is how to handle this on Tuesday, telling them to never contact me again and I am immediately disengaging them as a client? Normally, I wouldn't leave someone so in the dark at new years when everyone is on Holiday, but the CEO is a psychopath and I'm not touching the job again. I'm moving away from my business anyway and taking a job and don't have an online presence so not worried about reputation damage. Only issue is he is the husband of one of my friends (never should have taken them on I know)

    LLC to S-corp

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:48 PM PST

Confused here. Is creating an LLC that chooses an S-corp election different from just creating an S-Corp at the beginning?

Is the correct process to start an LLC and file with S-corp classification or to just begin as an S-corp? Same thing or totally differnt?

    Thank you in advance.

My small business (TX)just got a workers comp non compliance bill with no prior notice from the state or adp payroll that I needed to file for my out of state(NY) part time employee

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 04:12 AM PST

The bill is $8,000 for a part time employee who has only been here 6months and made $12,000 so far. According to state of New York workers compensation board fines shouldn't exceed 5,000 for up to 5 employees working up to 1yr. I only have one 1 working 6months.

Can I take any legal action or refute this—also, can they bill me without any notice prior?

My business is fully virtual (no risk of getting hurt on job).

I had no idea about this and I feel stupid, stressed, and completely blindsided.

EDIT: To clarify--this bill is for failure to have workers' comp insurance. This is the first year of business. My employee was hired in June 2021 (only 6 months on payroll). I didn't know I needed it--this was not willful non-filing or anything. This bill is my first time hearing of this requirement for NY employees. (it's not required in my state of TX).

UPDATE AGAIN: I just got off the phone with ADP and they told me they're sorry they didn't tell me they weren't handling those particular payments (workers comp, the family paid leave OR disability) for me because I had the "wrong package" 🤬 I wasn't even offered the other package! (don't they want my money?!) nor was I told what the alternative would mean I was expected to file it myself because of this. All I got was a..." we're sorry for the inconvenience".

I desperately need help thinking of a name/ opinion on the name I’m thinking about going with

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:44 PM PST

I want to start a small business but the biggest thing that is holding me back right now is the fact I can't think of a name. I want to start a crafting business (painting, decorating, and creating). I've thought of name BewDrop, like dewdrop but with a ghost pun. I just don't know if I should add anything to it or if it completely sucks. I appreciate any help at all

    Pet Store Launch

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:48 PM PST

Hey everyone! Hope you are all having a fantastic day.

I've got a problem, and I know it's not my 16 week old Abby. She is a miniature schnauzer that has to be one of the cuter pups on the planet (biased, I know) 😜

Anyways, what with the world somewhat upside down for everyone, including my family, my wife and I decided to start an online pet store… inspired by our own pup.

Our problem is that we are struggling to gain any traction. We get quite a few visitors to our website, driven from social media by Abby's good looks, but then the sales don't convert. So I feel like Abby's done her job, and I'm letting her down!

We started www.MissAbbysWorld.com with the intent to source good quality products from overseas (the same things that we were finding in the big box pet stores), and then sell them at a low margin. Our goal is to eventually launch our own brand, but we are not in a financial position to take that on yet.

We are slowly building up our listings and product offerings. We make sure to find reputable suppliers that offer quality products. We want to provide quality while being affordable.

Now I know I'm messing up somewhere, but I'm not sure where.😊

If you have time, my family would really value and appreciate your feedback on our website. And honestly, don't hold back.

If you do like it and think we just need to be patient, I'd love to hear that too. We've put in a lot of time, and not had a lot of orders. I realize it could be my newbie marketing as well.

Thanks in advance guys! I really appreciate you all, and sincerely wish you the best for 2022.

If an employee has a bad attitude

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 04:01 PM PST

If an employee has a bad attitude but still does the job correctly and has good attendance, would you still let him/her go?

Some context for our situation: my husband purchased an existing company about 4 months ago. The previous owner mostly worked from home, and due to mismanagement, the company wasn't growing.

There was one person in the office answering phones/ doing basic data entry and office work. This employee has developed a really bad attitude after the transfer of ownership. I think it is partly because she had very few responsibilities before, and mostly just watched movies at work (since no one else was there - she has even admitted to me that is what she mostly did).

Now that my husband purchased the company, he wanted to give her more responsibilities and work (with a pay raise). She got upset and didn't want more responsibility. She also argues with him regularly about his decisions, and texts previous employees she is friends with to complain (while at work).

Besides these problems, she has good attendance, and performs her work adequately.

We won't be able to let her go for a while for various reasons, but my husband wants to plan to let her go when he is able to. I feel like maybe we should keep her at her current job duties, but not add any more.

Will her bad attitude be bad for the company/ employee morale? Or will letting her go be worse since other employees may be loyal to her?

Closed A Gym & Opened A Liquor Store

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 08:30 AM PST

In March of 2020 my gym franchise closed to "slow the curve" of Covid. I was able to reopen a few months later but the damage was done. I lost 75% of my members and was bleeding money. In June I decided to close the gym, pay off my franchise and pivot into a liquor store since I had 3 years left in my lease with a 5 year option.

Last year was my first full year of owning a liquor store (opened Dec 2020). Our goal was to hit $1,000,000 in sales for the year.

My little 1100 square foot store ended at $2,318,969.18!

If you had told me that number 1 year ago today I would have laughed you right out of the room. If you told me that I would be opening a second store in March, my head would have exploded!

The "hardest" part was really just sticking to our guns that we would offer premium customer service and NOT get into a race to the bottom on pricing. It took awhile of rooting out the price conscious customers but it worked.

I currently own a medical supply company too. 21 years ago I started my first business selling a $10 coupon card and have been pivoting ever since.

    Numbers For The Nerds…

    • MCOL but affluent area (avg household income in a three mile radius is $110k)

    • 1 full time employee

    • 6 part time employees

    • starting pay $15/hour + monthly bonus

    • 20% discount and TONS of freebies

    • 0 turnover

    • fun and laid back environment which is probably the biggest factor in my success

    • approximately 22% gross margin

    • approximately 12% net margin

I am not the numbers guy but these are the ones that I assume most people will ask about.

Cheers to everyone's success in 2022!

    EDIT TO ADD:

    • Liquor License is $2500/year
    • Located in South Carolina across the border from Charlotte, NC
    • South Carolina is an extremely business friendly state. I can't say enough about the state employees, they go above and beyond any other state employees I have encountered in 20+ years of being an entrepreneur.

    FINAL EDIT:

    • After many messages and chats my store is Lazy Day Liquors in Fort Mill, SC. Sorry for the self promotion, I know it's frowned upon. Come by for a visit if you are in the area.

All it took to get the name out of me was many requests, a big pour of my favorite sipping tequila San Matias Rey Sol and an ice cold Modelo. I doxxed myself. Cheers to 2022!

    • Also I know my website looks like crap. We are in the middle of a big redesign and will be fixed in a day or two.

    Owner's Payment

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 09:26 AM PST

Happy New Year! I had a quick question. My online personal training business is owned 80% by my wife & I's holding company, and 20% through a mutual friend. I'm set on paying the mutual friend through an owner's draw, but am wondering how I would compensate myself? Technically our company owns the business, not myself, so I didn't think a owner's draw was appropriate. Would I need to 1099 myself as an independent contractor?

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    One Business or 2?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:05 PM PST

Planning a home-based business and was going to use a branded LLC. My minor child asked for help setting up a single-item business in the same industry. Since the businesses are similar I'm now thinking I should use an umbrella LLC with one EIN, two DBAs and (eventually) two trademarks. I've owned a brick & mortar before and I'm thinking of the expenses that could be shared with the use of one LLC for both businesses. I also understand it puts both businesses at risk should something happen. Are there any other pros/cons I should consider?

Have any of you actually used 99designs to get a logo?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:02 PM PST

There's not a single artistic bone in my body so the idea of running a premium contest on 99designs and reviewing a ton of submissions from their top designers seems efficient. It is super expensive but I was looking forward to seeing the creative range different designers explored. A company I know used them and got a nice logo so it is hard shaking this bias towards wanting to use 99designs service.

But after reading some reviews, some people are saying that they're just getting scammed/copyright submissions. I understand the point of view from a designer - they're doing work with only the possibility of a payout so maybe that's why people are getting bad submissions. Would I encounter this in the expensive, premium tier though? Would people not try for the chance of a huge payout like that?

Everyone's just saying to go and find a freelancer but don't you just run the same risk with them too? I really don't know whether I should be entertaining this website or just going with an agency or freelancer. Do people actually use Fiverr and sites like that for freelancers?

    Form an LLC or no?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 11:32 AM PST

I am technically a Loan Signing Agent in California but I haven't took a signing yet (I did all the test and requirements). I was wondering whether or not I should form an LLC before I take a signing and then have a business account and so forth or if I should keep it all within my personal bank account? I correctly work as a Security Guard but I fully intend on making this my full-time job/career so I want to make the proper decision. Thank you.

    Outside sales consultant

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 09:50 AM PST

Let me preface by saying I have a good accountant. But it's Sunday, I just thought about this and wanted to post here.

I have a day job, own 2 retail shops and we have a website. We also produce several products in house. I don't have time to push our products out to other retailers for wholesale. So I'm hiring/contracting an outside sales Rep. He'll be working on commissions.

Would he be an employee? Contractor? Would be need a W2, 1099?

Has anyone done this before? Pros/cons?

Looking for a Recommendation on what ATM Model to Purchase

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:52 PM PST

My wife is opening a nail salon in the next month or so in the Midwest and wants an ATM in her business. We've already decided that buying would be better than leasing but are now unsure of what the best model to purchase is or who the best person to buy one from is. Anyone have experience buying an ATM for your small business? What advice would you have liked to know before you spent $1,000 to $2,000 on an ATM? Please and thank you for any advice you have.

Edit: location is in the Midwest if that helps.

    American Candy shop names?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:39 PM PST

Hi, my name is Victoria and I'm from America but live in the UK. I have thought for some time to open an online candy box store (a box of random American candies) to start a small business since I'm actually from America, but can't think of an American sounding, eye-catching name so I'm stuck with, Victorias Candy Shop, Candy Boxes, or United Treats!

I've seen so many American candy stores since moving here but they don't have everything I usually eat so the idea would be to stock up on candy I can only get in the USA while there. Any ideas if you are from the UK, what American candy you'd like to try that isn't in the shops?

    Any help would be appreciated!

How do I find a clothing manufacturer for these types of clothing?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:28 PM PST

Hi, I have some t-shirt/long sleeve/polo design ideas but I would like to use the type of textured fabrics often used in more modern shirts (specifically the heathered style t-shirts/polos), but every time I search the internet for info on manufacturing t-shirts all I see is companies and manufactures offering the shirts made of the typical material that you just print your design on, but I am not interested in printing designs, I want the designs to be part of the fabric. A simple example would be those shirts that are one color on the bottom half and another on the top half but all one layer rather than two parts stitched together, or those shirts where the sleeves are a different color than the rest of the shirt (I want to do something more complex than that but that's the idea).

Where do I find manufacturers who can take those sorts of designs and apply them to those heathered style types of shirts?

    Any suggestions/leads are much appreciated.

    Bank for new online business

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:27 PM PST

    Hi,

I will be starting an online business this year through an LLC. The business will be selling products, no other services. In terms of keeping the LLC / my personal finances separate, how should I approach setting up the bank account / credit card for this business? I do not plan on getting a loan as I will be funding the initial business expenses myself. Can I transfer funds from my personal bank account to the business bank account and then use that to pay the business credit card without blurring the lines between myself and the LLC?

I bank personally with Chase. Thanks!

Getting a mortgage as a director of LTD company

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 07:28 AM PST

Looking for some advice… I'm a founder and director of a LTD company (4.5 years in), I am on PAYE. Keen to buy my first house with husband (employed). Will I be viewed as self employed or employed?

All the questions on mortgage calculators when I tick 'self employed' allude to me being a sole trader/freelancer. Asking for profits etc. I just don't think this applies to my situation.

I am essentially employed, I just happen to own 30% of the business I'm employed by.

Note, my business is in scale up stage and loss making until next year earliest. With seed investment.
