Why do older people put Accountants up with doctors and lawyers?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 06:53 PM PST

I swear every old person you tell you're going to be an accountant it's either "Wow, Accountants make a lot of money"! or "I always told my son to be a doctor, lawyer or accountant, you can never go wrong"!

Now that I’m a manager I understand why the in-charges and partners were sticklers about documentation.

Asking for no signing bonus in exchange for higher salary

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 06:55 AM PST

Does anyone have any experiences foregoing a signing bonus in exchange for a higher salary?

For example, let's say a company offered 80k + 10k signing bonus. Would countering with 90k + 0 signing bonus be feasible?

Busy Season Tip: Design Spreadsheets on Paper First

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 05:06 PM PST

[UK] A partner from my old firm asked me for help on a client as I lead a consultation project in 2020.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 05:38 AM PST

So apparently the new team and manager royally fucked the client in another project in 2021. I have a good relationship with this partner, hence why he has my private number.

He effectively wants me to help him set up a plan for a new project (they're effectively splitting the group). As it's a very complex group structure and I have intimate knowledge of the client he wants me in to help.

How do I say "no lmfao" without being rude.

Edit: I've asked for £250 an hour as I have to do it after my regular work hours and on the weekends it's £295. Let's see how he responds lol

Can I get a primal scream for how much payroll sucks?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 06:46 AM PST

This is only my second season, but why in the world has the US set up a system in which we have to submit multiple reports for every single payroll client in less than 15 business days from start to finish??? Oh did I mention my employer doesn't e-file any of our payroll taxes, so every. single. form. has to be printed in duplicate and sent to the correct authority.

Our 1099 software hasn't even updated for our state withholding reconciliation form, none of our 1099 clients keep W-9's for any of their vendors, some of our clients haven't even had their bank statements processed yet.

    I just can't. AHHHHHHHHHhhhhh

    Chargeable Hour Targets

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:56 AM PST

Hey Guys! Just wanted to get your opinion on something. My team over the past few months has started this whole new process where we have an internal meeting once a month. In this meeting, the partner shares his screen and shows the people who are falling behind on their chargeable (there's a red dot against their names) and "emphasises" that they need to meet their targets. I understand it's important to meet chargeable targets, but this public humiliation is taking a toll on a lot of people's stress levels. Is this common? Has anyone else seen this happen in their teams?

How long did it take y'all to be comfortable with accounting?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:38 AM PST

Im currently an intern for tax/audit accounting. Im watching training videos and its so confusing. I got a 3.9 gpa in all my accounting classes in college. Entering my internship I thought this training wasn't gonna be a big deal but I thought wrong. Almost every video provided for me for both tax and audit I feel lost. I got an idea what its saying but I still have no clue what Im learning.

How long did it take y'all to be comfortable with accounting? Did you guys feel as lost as me from the beginning? If so, how did you overcome that?

How did year end go? (Industry bros)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 03:36 PM PST

I was absolutely dreading have to close the books for 2021 at my old job (private retailer). I knew nothing was going to balance and shit was going to be fucked. Both AR and AP was a disaster. Hell, we were still dealing with unreconciled invoices from 2020. It was a shit show. Ended up leaving and got a job at a small printing company. It was a pay cut but less headache. I assisted with year end and it was smooth as silk. Its nice being around other accountants who don't just wing everything and wait till the end of the year to fix accounts.
