    Best method of depreciating land?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 06:47 PM PST

I would appreciate any tips or pointers from some real accounting pros.

Which is the best method of depreciating land? Straight line or double declining?

    Thank you!

I know Canadian salaries are bad, but I didn't know they were THIS bad.

Why is Big 4 so short staffed right now?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:59 PM PST

    Hi everyone.

I've seen soo many depressing posts in this community that I've lost count.

Why are the Big 4 in need of soo many people? Is it because people are leaving? What makes it different from any other year besides COVID?

Also, there seems to be almost an obsession with the hours worked in public. How can there be soo much resentment and the company still be functioning? How can a job cause the amount of stress I've seen in these posts?

Is anyone happy in Big 4?

    What’s so great about audit?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 01:00 PM PST

Other than the nice fees you can charge as a partner and the exit opportunities?

I mean seriously, this work is so mind-bogging boring - import the trial balance, plan materiality, test accounts by ticking and tying. Zzzzzzzzzz.

Could a middle aged internal auditor move up to something bigger?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:17 PM PST

I'm 32, wife is 31, we have a 2 and 3 year old. I'm a CPA with four years internal audit experience with a bank and I went into public accounting last year with the idea of doing it for 5-6 years and trying to move to a small bank as a controller or something. The problem is that I'm a wimp and can't stand busy season and missing dinner and bedtime with my wife and kids when I have to travel and I'm considering going back to internal audit somewhere . My question is, if i work in IA for the next 10-15 years, would anyone consider a 42-47 year old man with only IA experience for something bigger? Would they if I got an MBA or CFA? Has anyone here gotten more ambitious later in life and done well with it?

BDO NY fired me and now their calling me to come back

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:48 AM PST

Fired me during pandemic saying "low performance" when I was at the firm for a couple of years and did great work. They cut peoples pay and said they wouldn't fire anyone. They fired so many people in the admin side as well. I was in audit. Now there calling me to come back for more money? Should I even consider it? At another company and happy. The environment is super toxic there. Partners will put pressure on you to sign off on stuff even when support isn't all there; you can pay them for your audit reports opinion basically.

Attending Meet the Firms event and applying to internships. How is my resume looking?

Trial balance Question - Why is this not balancing ? Answer is $928500 but I’ve tried a few ways to get that and nothing works.

I got offered a staff accountant position in Portland Maine for $30/hour. Can I ask for $35 or is that too much?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:15 AM PST

I have 2 years of experience as an AP associate (plus two years in college working at Liberty Tax and a one-semester accounting internship at a nonprofit). How do I counter by asking for $35 without sounding like I'm just trying to squeeze them for more money?

    Non traditional student

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 12:35 AM PST

I'm 26 and recently returned to school to get my degree in accounting. I dropped out when I was younger and a bio major due to substance abuse. I've been to treatment and am now in the right headspace to take on school. I guess I have concerns about being recruited for internships/jobs due to my circuitous route and gaps in my timeline. I guess I'm just looking for tips or advice when it comes to addressing my past and presenting myself as a worthy job candidate. It's hard to put myself out there in traditional job fair settings bc I'm insecure that I'm an older student.

Starting with SQL and Power BI for accounting

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 04:26 PM PST

    Hi there,

I will be very grateful, if someone recommend me a book, course or certification for a newbie for SQL and Power BI. I am a junior accountant and I would love to start using them in future.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Adding another item to my action list like

TIL I am an essential worker.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:44 AM PST

Had a chat with a coworker today, got on the topic of COVID. During the last lockdown, the government mandated that working on a job-site would only be allowed for "essential workers". That'd be food/medicine distribution and public services mainly.

Up until somebody from our office had call with the ministry of health, and mentioned how auditors are involved in all financial support programs. We suddenly got declared "essential workers".

    I had to facepalm.

    Contract work with Big 4?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:47 PM PST

Hello everyone, I've been recently debating on a part-time to full-time contract work with the B4 as my current job doesn't require more than 40 hrs from me.

Currently in a decently compensated in a govt job as IA so I don't necessarily want to jump the boat completely into B4.

I would additionally like to get exposure to SOX & AML assignments. Do any of you studs have any insight on this path? Do's/don'ts or alternative suggestions?

Open to all ideas except maybe asking to get paid in pizza. Thank you in advance!

My bg is 5 years in IA w/masters, cpa and other relevant certs.

About to be promoted from intern to associate - asking to go remote. What are my oods?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:34 PM PST

Spent 6 months as an intern. Have received very good reviews. When they offer the full-time position in about two weeks, I'm going to ask to go remote. I have family in a different city.

What are the chances they say yes? Any special talking points I can provide to help my case? Dying to move to that other city where my family is!
