    A 3D printing side hustle I started

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:55 PM PST

Just thought i would share one of my business and how I started.

I was sitting around drinking some beers 😂 and I thought I should buy a 3D printer it would be super cool, just for fun.

So I started to look into how much it would cost and yes, you can spend a lot $$$$ on a 3D printer, but I bought the Anet A8 it's just a cheap China printer for about $160.

It was definitely a leaning experience putting it together but that ended up being a huge value later on.

So after hours of learning how to dial in the printer, I finally printed a 3D case for my raspberry PI.

I got the STL file from thingiverse and it was a Nintendo 64 case btw.

After that I started to think about all the products I could make with the 3D printer. For an example a phone case 3D printed would cost about $0.25 (in filament) but you could sell it for $25 so I instantly saw the dollar signs 😂

I wanted to know how this magical STL file was made and I ran into a site called tinkercad and it's completely free and let's you design STL files.

I now have everything I need but what do I print?

I looked at my snowboard and was like why isn't that on the wall? Oh I design a snowboard wall hanger and print it bam 💥

It only took me a few hours to design a simple wall hanger and probably only a few mins for an experienced person.

The point is that's my first product. I put it on eBay and Etsy and poof I started making sales and poof I created a business.

Now I have 10 printers running 24/7 and over 150 different products I sell.

    Hopefully this inspired someone 🤷‍♂️

    Isolation and small business ownership

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 03:46 AM PST

    Hi all,

Is feeling isolated a common problem among small business owners? How do people resolve this?

I have posted here before about how I'm thinking of closing my business. I teach after-school, summer camps, and homeschool creative writing classes for kids. I've always been mostly alone aside from contracted teachers that mostly did their own thing, and of course the students, but I'm talking about adult/colleague/ collaborator relationships. I never really minded working alone because I had other places to connect with peers - I had a gym I really liked, I was a member of a great ceramics studio, I took piano class, I had a neighborhood lunch group, etc. I lost those connections with the pandemic and haven't been able to get them back, and now the isolation at work is ruining my mental health.

My typical day is: wake up and go for a run by myself. Come home and send the kids off to school and husband off to work. Go to work. There's nobody there. Clean the classroom. Sit down at the computer and plan lessons and manage the business for around 6 hours. During this time, I alternate between eating and crying, so I'm fat and sad. Teach my classes, which are really fun. Dismiss my classes at 7:30. Try to stay and clean up and get.ready for tomorrow, but I'm the last one in the building and I get scared because it's so dark and quiet outside, so I grab my purse and run to my car. Eat dinner with the family. Watch TV. Go to bed

That's it. That's my life. I used to be a fun and interesting person, believe it or not.

I know.that there are solutions for the isolation business-wise and personally, and whenever I talk to my family about it, they are adament that these are the solutions I need. Stuff like hiring more people, having social writing meetups at my classroom, finding activities for work-life balance again. They dont want me to give up on my business that I worked so hard for. They want me to be happy and successful like I was pre-pandemic.

But let me tell you my dream. It's very simple. I would like to go to work at a place where there are other adults that I can talk to.and share with. I would like to have colleagues, professional cohorts, a team. I'd like to have work friends. I'd like for there to be a division of labor and shared responsibilities. I want to be able to email someone with a question. You know, I'd gladly sit through a meeting that should have been an email. I just want someone to say "good morning" to me when I come to work or ask me how I'm doing so I can say "doin' good" and mean it.

Is anyone else feeling this way? How are you managing?

At the end of my rope and feeling helpless

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 04:25 PM PST

I'm trying to start a baby clothing company based off of a tech pack I designed. It's a pretty simple design, and I'm just looking for a manufacturer that will produce 2 color ways of this style for me.

For some reason it has proven extremely difficult to find a manufacturer. I have tried several different places, some have never got back to me, some told me the design was too difficult.

Then I started working with a company. I sent them my tech pack which is to spec and asked them to follow it which they agreed to. They sent me back a sample which obviously didn't follow the tech pack. Then they gave me a runaround about a second sample and kept asking me to place a Bulk order before seeing the edited sample. So I pulled out of that deal and am so disappointed.

Why is it so hard to find a manufacturer to work with? Anyone have any advice on clothing manufacturers that will make children's clothing that will pass inspection in the US?

Ex employee has friends leaving a lot negative Google reviews

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 03:36 PM PST

I have a person who I let go from a contract position posting negative Google reviews. This is against policy. Now he is also enlisting the help of 8-10 friends who are also now leaving 1 star reviews.

None of these people have ever been customers or clients and the reviews are fraud. Anyone have any suggestions of what to do?

Thoughts On Starting An Event Space Business?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 08:20 PM PST

Recently I watched this episode of the podcast "David never sleeps" where they brought in Brian Waldron to talk about how he started, scaled, and automated an event space empire. He also talks about how lucrative the business is and how the pandemic didn't really affect him very much. Im interested in getting into some type of entrepreneurial journey and this does sound good from what he says, but id rather hear from real people and see their experiences in this industry, instead of a guy who is trying to sell his course. So with that being said for those of you with any type of knowledge in this field

how lucrative is this industry really? what's are some obstacles you had to overcome? would you recommend pursuing this?

Also any general knowledge would be really appreciated.

How to Set Up Phone Menu?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 07:35 PM PST

I would like to set up a phone menu for my business in Canada that provides an automated greeting and then routes callers through options via their telephone dialpad (ie press 1 for sales, 2 for support, etc.) Any recommendations on how to do that without it being too costly? Thanks in advance.

How do you solve cultural barriers in small business? I am restarting a business where historically all of my customers have been Arabic. I need to know how to get them to understand I'm not a snake oil salesmen.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 11:05 PM PST

My business is putting quarter pushers in gas stations. In my part of the country, the vast majority of gas station owners are Arabic. In Arab culture it's ok to lie about the product. It's the customers job to weed out the bullshit. This leads to a lot of mistrust when they're dealing with anything related to money.

I come in offering them hundreds of dollars per week for putting a gumball sized machine in their store. It seem suspiciously too good to be true to anyone I pitch it to, although I'm making just as much off of it as them.

When I did this business in the past I found that the number one reason I would have to walk away from prime real estate is that they thought I was full of shit.

    Business Idea

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 09:09 AM PST

So I have this business idea that I have been thinking about off and on for the past few months and I was wondering if any of you would see a need for this type of service offering.

The idea is to rent/lease artificial Christmas trees. We would purchase, set up (ornaments, garland, topper, skirt would be extra), take down, and store the Christmas trees.

Pricing would be some where in the range of $225-$750 for one season, and this would include the setting up and taking down of the tree. No services such as ornaments, garland, topper, or skirt are included within this price. The pricing was determined by getting the pricing of the tree itself, and then assuming that the tree could be leased for 25% of its purchase price.

Ex: A Balsam Hill Frasier Fir, 6.5ft, clear light, flip tree (a flip tree would need only about 5-10 minutes of setup time so less labor would be needed with these trees) would be priced at $225. The cost of the tree itself would be $899/per tree (assuming no business discount). We would set up, take down and store said tree as stated previously. For installation of ornaments, garland, topper, and skirt, $109 would added to the $225 for a total price of $334. ROI before gas, rental of UHAUL, taxes would be 24.33% if both services are completed. This is not including the salvage value of the tree at the end of its useful life (hopefully I would be able to sell the tree).

Competition: Based on 30 minutes of research (googling), I found NO competition within my area. I would mainly be attempting to service residential clients.

Also, I looked at piano leases given the similar business model and it seems as if for at least one of the companies that they are able in one year from one piano able to get over 40%+ of the stated purchase price. Ex: if the stated purchase price is $5000 they would be able to get $2000 if it would be leased for a full year.

Roadmap: The plan is to spend 2-3 thousand $'s worth of trees and spend $100-$200 on marketing for next season. If is works out then I will purchase 4-10 thousand $'s worth of tree for the season after that. Then finally, I would attempt at getting a loan for this business in 3 years time. My reasoning for obtaining a loan would be that with $30000 the average cost per tree would decrease and and the revenue from those trees would hopefully significantly outpace the payments of principal/interest (still have to do the math on this one though).

So a couple of questions for everyone:

    1. Would you use this service? If not, could you see other people wanting this service?
    2. Could you see someone getting their Christmas tree leased at that price of $225? $334 for everything?
    3. Is no competition a red flag?
    4. I am trying to project the various expenses so I was wondering what sort of interest rate is given for business loans (I saw 2-7%, but I don't know if this is accurate)?
    5. What sort of ROI is average, good, great, for small businesses?
    6. Thoughts on getting funding from friends/family (I would do this later down the road possibly)?

    Thank you very much!!

I have just started building my own website on Wordpress and now I am thinking of getting a personalised domain for my website. I am not too sure what's good out there but I am looking for a stable place + value for money with less problems.

I have looked at VentraIP and Bluehost and thinking of either one of them. Please note this website will be located in Australia.

Does anyone have any recommendations? All suggestions welcomed!

    selling 30 year business

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 05:45 AM PST

I was just wondering if anyone on this sub has experience with selling a small business. I have worked in and managed an 8-10 employee sized service business with my spouse for 30 years. We are in the final stages of completing a sale, which has been our intention for the past couple of years. I want to feel excited, free from the burden and day to day stress of running a business, but after weeks of contract negotiations with bankers and lawyers, I just feel kind of numb. Any advice/thoughts from someone who has gone through this process?

INAN for my small gifting biz

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 10:21 PM PST

Hi everyone! I need help naming my gifting company.

For the last year and a half, I have been running an Etsy shop where I do small custom gifts- curated gift boxes, laser engraved cutting boards, signs, etc. It has gone great, and I have decided to expand and move beyond Etsy.

The majority of my clients are realtors. I actually landed a very big client where I work directly with a national mortgage company and supply all their lenders with closing gifts. This is where the majority of my income comes from so I would like to expand and try to capture more of this market.

I have been wanting to do this for a while but I can not think of a name. I want it to be classy and professional to resemble the type of gifts I provide.

Thinking something with the name gift in it so it's very obvious what we do. The gifting …

Some I thought of but not in love with "The gifting bee" "The gifting house"

    Thank you!

I would love to hear all ideas - even if it doesn't have the word gift in it.

    Potential PPP loan fraud?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 02:11 PM PST

Looking through PPPloans for my area and noticed that my former employer (a real scumbag) (6 locations totaling 40-50 employees) had overstated the FTE count on multiple PPP loans. He had applied for and had forgiven 100% on 4 loans. He stated that the "management llc" employed 50 people, the actual "DBA" company (different name) claimed 270 employees, along worth two other shell businesses claiming 2 and 10 employees respectively.

My question is, by overstating FTE (employee) count drastically, would this be considered fraud?

Expensive and timely permits is a form of gatekeeping entrepreneurship

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:47 PM PST

Anyone else taken the risk in starting a business then get totally screwed over by over the top permitting issues? Doing a simple remodel, building walls within the current walls for soundproofing in a less than 5,000 sq ft space has already taken 8 months. Now they're saying it will take another 9 months to get electrical approved and we aren't even doing anything to the electrical. The landlord refused us free rent during buildout, the city never responds within the time they tell you to expect, and they make you pay for guess work before sending in their own inspectors. Not to mention the $2k fee just to file each time it's not perfect. This situation is so discouraging for us and it feels like this is a way to gatekeep entrepreneurship for people that outgrown working at home. Anyone else survived permit hell or currently there?

    1099k vs deposits

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 08:38 PM PST

hi, im helping my newly minted SBO sister with her Q4 tax payment and I noticed something weird. in some months, the bank deposit tally doesn't match the 1099k monthly revenue by as much as 10,000. I backtracked all the data including bank statement exports and POS sales reports for the year.

granted this should be less than any refunds or tips charged. but im still a few thousand dollars off.

for the sake of calculation, if a tip was signed to the card should that deposit to the linked account? so cash may be deducted n that day but there should be a credit card payment to back fill that cash debit.

Any tips and tricks to reconcile the monthly in/outs? we have a POS with merchant services.

i don't have all the merchant account statements with me. is it rare for a credit card provider to drop payments? Are card tips summed into the monthly gross. trying not to assume shenanigans by business partners.

    tldr:

does 1099k month == total POS card sales for month, regardless of tips.or refunds aka monthly charged gross fees.

does a merchant service provider deposit all revenue in the month or could I be seeing a few days lag in deposits?

    Customer Invoice Deadline

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 10:20 AM PST

Has anyone ever run into a situation like this? How were you able to resolve it/what was the end outcome? I opted to go to the customer tail-between-my-legs and hope they understand.

For reference, they are a publicly traded company. We are a family business and the sum amounts to 2 weeks of company profits.

    Timeline:

December 2nd, I fail to submit a batch of invoices, I know that I have sent them. I am wrong.

December 3rd, customer emails saying "any invoice not submitted by January 5th will not be paid, we are closing out 2021". I read the memo. I think to myself "dang, ok gotta be super sure to keep submitting these next invoices on time". I'm still 100% confident I've submitted.

January 13th, I process our unpaid invoice balance, notice the Dec. invoices haven't been paid. Go to remind the customer, remember the Dec 3rd email, panic check to confirm that I did send the invoices, realize that I did not send the invoices. Email the customer AP and VP employee who sent the original memo.

January 15th, no response from customer as of yet.

    Adding partner to S-Corp

    Posted: 15 Jan 2022 01:54 PM PST

Hello everyone. Just wanted to see if I can get some insight/helpful resources that I can research on what adding a partner to an existing S Corp looks like.

Currently I have a very new (started in September) and very small personal training / massage therapy business. I met with another exercise physiologist today about possibly becoming partners. She is an employee (was) an employee at a small gym that is closing down and the owner gave her permission to take all of her existing clientele with her. She currently charges more than I do and has more clients than I do and has cash to invest; so this could be a great opportunity for my business. I would like to maintain majority shares of the business. Not sure what other information I could share as this is all very new to me.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    LLC Questions
