    Middle man tax

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:29 PM PST

I offer plumbing services. A company hires me as a sub-contractor. They set the prices. No problem.

My worry is, that they take their cut after calculating fed taxes. So based on a $100 job and %10 fed taxes, their cut would be based on $110. So I still have to pay the Fed on $100 and then this company om $110. I pay more than twice every time. I know marketing isn't cheap which is why I'm asking. I don't markup my material after tax, I do it before tax. I feel like I'm being taxed on my taxed revenue..

Where do I reach people to join the beta list of a SaaS product for small businesses I am working on?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 12:41 AM PST

I am working on a tool that enables small business owners to convert their Instagram business page into an online store instantly and start selling. I want to test the waters before jumping into product development. So, I tried reaching out to small business owners on:
    1. Instagram - Got blocked from sending DMs after 9-10 DMs
    2. Facebook Groups - Posted my request to discuss the requirements with potential customers but no replies yet.
    3. Facebook DMs - DMed local business owners but I guess my message is stuck in the filtered messages.

My question is, what do I do next? Should I run ads to derive traffic and increase the chances of people signing up. Seller meetups/ Fairs are not happening due to the COVID situation.

    Disheartened & Cynical

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:21 PM PST

I've run three businesses over the last decade with expected to great success. They are now consolidated into two that are both are doing well, providing me the lifestyle and time I'd hoped for.

However, over the years I've had enough deceitful experiences with business associates that I've become extremely cynical. Losing business, opportunity, and several important relationships due to their breach of trust in major ways. I did not set out expecting to trust everyone I have a professional relationship with, but I am now in a position where trusting absolutely no one has become the best option. I realize this sounds a bit like paranoia, but evidence suggests otherwise. I have not helped someone who hasn't tried using it against me in years.

I chose this path wanting to improve my personal and professional relationships as well as my community, but everywhere I turn I see people being backstabbed if not myself. I don't love being cynical but it's proven the better option.

Has anyone else gone through this? And if so, any advice?

Makeup & Beauty Studio - need help naming!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 11:48 PM PST

Hi Reddit! Need help naming a beauty studio. I do professional makeup for weddings, tv, film, magazine, etc. I'm planning on venturing out to semi-permanent makeup (brow/lips/scalp tattoo) and building a studio to cater both makeup and semi-permanent makeup appointments.

I'm currently stuck with "Jyka Espinoza Studio" which is just my name. Perhaps there is a wordplay or better naming instead of just my name. "Carmela Jessica" is my full name, Jyka's just the nickname. Would really appreciate any help!

    When to get a lawyer

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 03:46 PM PST

At what dollar amount does a fraudulent loss go from "Cost of Business" to "I should get a lawyer" $1,000, $5,000, $10,000? $20,000? I don't want to spend more on the legal fight than the cost of eating the loss. Is there a simple answer?

What's a good CRM that you have used and why do you like it? I'm having a difficult time finding one that has everything I need.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:50 PM PST

I would like to see one with email integration, workflows, client portal to access documents, texting/phone platform, mailchimp replacement, etc.

These are the platforms I'm currently using simultaneously:

    - Financial Cents (project management and client onboarding)
    - 17 Hats (lead/client contact information and where I send service agreements from)
    - Gmail (company email, calendar)
    - Slack (internal messaging)
    - DocuSign (more agreements and documents)
    - Encyro (secure portal)
    - Google Drive (store files)
    - Google tables (lead pipeline)
    - Calendly (book meetings)
    - Cognito forms (fill out questionnaires)
    - Mailchimp (email campaigns)
    - Intermedia (VoIP phone)
    - Trello (for one ticket projects)
    - 1Password (store important data)

I'm currently also trying out Monday.com. I like that we can see our fb ads on there.

But I am also getting myself pretty overwhelmed. So I wanted to see if anyone has found anything that can do it all. Or is that wishful thinking...

    Starting a Business?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:29 PM PST

Hello, I have artwork that I'm looking to convert into shirts/products and sell online. It would be no big deal but I'm currently a university student on disability and I cringe at start up costs- if I got a cricut or lower cost embroidery machine, and sold on something like shopify, what are the chances I'd make that money back? I think my main worry is calculating an appropriate price for my products when considering shipping costs to customers, making a profit margin, etc.. Is there a site or calculator I can use(I'm in Canada). Thanks!

Can anyone give any information about operating a skateboard shop?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:26 PM PST

I'm interested in opening a skate shop in my medium-sized midwestern city. It would have a brick and mortar presence, with maybe some online sales through Instagram DMs and maybe Shopify.

Would anyone be willing to share any insight on running this type of business? Interested in risks, difficulties, important things to do, good and bad procedures.

I'm pretty familiar with running a small business (law firm), and can easily handle all legal, employment, tax, licensing, etc., paperwork.

I'm not too sure about picking a location. It seems like it should be somewhere centrally located, safe, with a high population density, higher than average household income level, and walkable/skateable.

While I'm familiar with skate brands and the different manufacturers, I'm not too sure about what to buy and stock initially. Uncertain about footwear. Definitely stocking hard goods (decks, trucks, wheels, etc.) and some soft goods (hoodies, tees, hats, etc.). On the fence about footwear. I feel like with footwear, the upfront cost will be very high and size ranges of shoes so expansive. I'm guessing the margins are highest on the soft goods, and that it's a good idea to stock both manufacturer-branded clothing and less expensive shop brand.

How would you figure out a brand name and logo? Are the margins so low on this type of business that you basically just hope to break even for awhile? I should mention that skating is one of my passions, but I would be doing this primarily to pursue profit.

    Thanks!

First business I’ve ever owned, I’m so excited to start my journey!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:14 PM PST

Recently turned 22 and have started my first marketing agency within the crypto space for the past 9 months now. Started by myself to now having 9 contractors under me I can proudly say I have hit over 7 figures in gross revenue with $0 put into my company! Want to know the funny part? I had no prior experience marketing and or running a business. I was lucky to run into certain people including advisors over the course of starting my business that guided me along the journey and have certain characteristics and skill sets I've acquired/ learned over the years to get me where I'm at now. Do I know if my company will succeed? No, but I don't let fear drive my mind into weird places, in fact I like failing cause it allows me to learn. But, I do know that no matter what I won't give up either. My dad is battling stage 4 esophageal cancer and I'm doing this all for him and my family. I want to make them proud and give them a life of not having to live paycheck by paycheck or almost losing the house or cars we have. I want to inspire people to be the best versions of themselves no matter what happens.

To all you small business owners out there you WILL kick ass this year and the rest going forward. Don't give up and enjoy the journey, seriously enjoy it. If there's one book I would recommend so far it would be $100m offers by Alex Hormozi. He helped me learn a lot and allowed my 17 year old brother the knowledge to help close his first 6 figure deal this year!

I'm still extremely new to small business so I was wondering if you guys have any tips? Would be appreciated and if I can share some wisdom I will. Looking to expand next year, get my company into a solid project management platform and automate my work amongst other softwares and CRMs. I'm still a novice when it comes to team building and motivation but hopefully I'll learn this year. Looking to kick 2022's ass and hope you guys do too!

Software to manage multiple trucks and 100+ deliveries between them?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:10 PM PST

We currently have an old school custom inventory+CRM.

Basically drivers get a list of orders with addresses (with stickers for each piece) from our system.

But that's it, our actual routes and deliveries are just a printed lists of addresses.

It's fine currently, but hardly a future proof system.

Any experience with routing software or upgrading to a whole inventory+CRM system?

Do I need a Certificate of Authority?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:34 PM PST

I am a seller on amazon, 2022 will be my first year starting business. I am located in NYC. I am wondering whether or not I need to get a Certificate of Authority for New York.

Amazon (as with most online selling platforms like eBay) collects sales tax from all your sales, and remits the sales tax to their respective states. No $ sales tax is released to me, the seller. For this reason, I would be collecting $0 in sales tax. So I'm wondering, do I need to get a Certificate of Authority EVEN IF, I wont be collecting any sales tax (since Amazon collects it on your behalf). The direct words from the NY state info page regarding this certificate is as follows:

"If you will be making sales in New York State that are subject to sales tax, you must register with the Tax Department and obtain a Certificate of Authority. The Certificate of Authority gives you the right to collect tax on your taxable sales . . . If you expect to make taxable sales in New York State, you must register with the Tax Department"

The link to the NY state info page: NY State Certificate of Authority info page
