    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Dec 31, 2021

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 02:30 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Did Robinhood use our accounts in Nov for micro transactions?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 10:41 PM PST

I was reviewing my November Robinhood statement and saw some strange activity - buying, cancel buys (BCXL) and selling small amounts of GME and BB, landing me a whopping $0.27 profit. This definitely wasn't me and I don't even have BB in my portfolio at all. I have a very boring portfolio with standard stocks, no fancy options ever. This is the only month this has ever happened.

I figured it was some strange fraud attempt and did all the usual security stuff, but then noticed two even weirder things. 1) There is NO other indication that this activity ever happened. No notifications, no emails, nothing in my "history" and 2) my partner had the same weird micro transactions on his account in November, too.

Uhhh, what? Can other people check if there was random activity recently in their accounts that ONLY showed up on their statement? What is this?

Cathie Wood Tones Down 40% Return Forecast to Avoid 'Misconception'

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:39 AM PST

The star fund manager has revised the wording in a report that projected big returns for her flagship strategy at Ark Investment Management.

CNBC reports that "there has been a slow but steady trickle of outflows, now 173 million shares, down 15% from that April peak, but that level has been fairly steady in the last few weeks."

Seems like the overall pessimistic tone got into Cathie as well. What about you?

Pelosi’s husband bought Google, Disney call options that would pay off if bull market continues

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 02:44 AM PST

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband may be be positioning himself to profit from the ongoing rise in the share prices of some of America's biggest companies. Paul Pelosi, the California Democrat's spouse, bought call options that give him the right, but not the obligation, to purchase shares in Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOGL, -0.31% GOOG, -0.34%, memory-chip company Micron Technology Inc. MU, -2.37%, Salesforce.com Inc. CRM, +0.31% and Walt Disney Corp. DIS, +0.68% at prices that are upwards of 45% below their closing trading levels on the days in which he made the transactions, according to a periodic transaction report filed with the government.

Federal law requires members of Congress to file reports within 45 days after they or their spouses purchase or sell securities exceeding a value of $1,000, along with a rough estimate of how much the transactions were worth.

Pelosi, owner and operator of a San Francisco–based real estate and venture capital investment and consulting firm, purchased between $500,000 and $1 million in call options in Alphabet stock with a strike price of $2,000 and an expiration date of Sept. 16, 2022, about 30% below the closing price of the stock on Dec. 17, 2021, the day of the transaction, according to FactSet. He bought between $250,000 and $500,000 in call options in Micron shares with a strike price of $50 and an identical expiration date, about 45% below the closing price on Dec. 21, the day of the transaction.

The speaker's husband also bought between $600,000 and $1.25 million in call options in Salesforce with a strike price of $210 and an expiration date of Jan. 20, 2023, about 15% below the stock's closing price of $247.21 on the day of the transaction, Dec. 20. He bought between $100,000 and $250,000 in call options in Walt Disney shares with a strike price of $130 and an expiration date of Sept. 16, 2022, roughly 13% below the stock's closing price of $148.76 on the day of the transaction, Dec. 17.

Stock Market Prediction with Artificial Intelligence - Anyone used such a tool?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 11:06 PM PST

I guess this subreddit is the ultimate place to ask this question.

Stock market is extremely difficult to predict and there are multiple things that affect the changes. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is heavily used in this domain and AI solutions is essentially on the way to replace human traders.

    - Does anyone use a tool/product that gives predictions on stock prices in the stock market?
    - Do such tools help for taking better decisions?

It is very difficult for such a tool to be 100% accurate but the predictions can essentially be used as a second opinion.

The tool can give predictions in different aspects i.e.

    - What is the probability of a given stock to go up or down in the next 5 minutes? (This is extreme scenario and sounds a bit like difficult to solve.)
    - What is the probability of a given stock to go up or down on the next day? (This (comparably) sounds like a more reasonable problem.)
    - Or the same prediction for the next coming week or next month, for mid/long term
    thinkers...

Does anyone use such a tool? How happy are you in that case with the solution you are using?

What is the minimum percentage of annual dividend returns makes a stock attractive?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:02 PM PST

KO for example returned 3% ($1.68) and MSFT returned 0.72% ($2.48). I'm guessing this will vary according to sector but in is there a general guideline? If we want to get into specifics i'm looking at Oil and Gas industry stocks that give a return

Difference between Softbank (TSE 9434) and Softbank Group (TSE 9984)?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 12:54 AM PST

Can someone point me out what are the differences between those two entities. I believe that Softbank Group is more like a holding and Softbank is more like telecommunications in itself? Am I right?

    Tools to check sector/industry averages

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 06:55 PM PST

For purposes of comparing the p/e, PEG, etc. of a company to the sector it is part of, what are websites we can access to check on the averages of each sector? I've been using yahoo finance but the averages there are never updated.

Starting to invest as a way to save and protect savings from inflation

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:11 PM PST

I am 19, a student so I don't really have a lot of money to invest, however, since I am all the time sitting at home or working I am not spending any of the money I've already got and ,I'd like to try my hand at investing in a longer term. Would it be okay to start with putting 100€ into a VOO like stock, and if yes, which is the best alternative in Europe ? I'd like to do this for 5-6 years, steadily increasing the amount. I am located in central Europe, so I'll be using IBKR to invest. I'd appreciate any help or tips, thanks a lot!

If I hold 1 stock into the new year after day trading, could my cost basis be huge? Disallowed losses

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 02:38 AM PST

I traded a stock 6 months ago and I haven't since, I have since held a small position in the company. I can not remove the option contracts as there is no buyers to sell them too.

If I acquired mutiple gains and losses through the year but still hold a small position after not trading the stock for many months.

Are all my losses disallowed because I repurchased this small position 6 months ago??

I read that it's based on tax lots...

Does anyone have a framework for investing/trading? Like a step by step process?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:42 PM PST

I've been building a framework for investing where I collect several data points and input it into the frameworks and calculate the probability and logic of such outcomes to happen. I take into consideration markets, sentiment, fed, economics, government, and then begin to zoom into individual companies. By inputing these data points and filtering them into a framework to analyze the information I've removed Biases, cherry picking information and I've been able to calculate my risk better. I'm just curious if anyone has such a model in place for their trading? I'd like to build a software program where an algo does all of this faster Ofcourse but I'm in square one still. Thoughts?

Tax wash sales. Holding a small position after day trading months ago, can't sell the remaining options!

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:37 AM PST

I traded a stock over 30 times at the beginning of the year and I ended up holding a $5,000 call position that is now entirely worthless. However, i am unable to sell this final position because there is no buyers and it expires next month in January. Which means it will carry forward into next year and likely expire worthless as a -$5,000 loss

I read through this last year and i heard that it is based on a "tax lot"

Does this mean since i haven't purchased any investments in this company for 6 months now, that all the other gains and losses are allowed to be offset but the current $5,000 is not?

I really wouldn't want to pay taxes on all the gains of this stock because i held a -$5,000 option.

If i hold this $5,000 position. Am i just not allowed to deduct $5,000 in losses are all my trades from 7 months stack on the cost basis?

Any tax guys on here know?
