We keep hearing "People Don't Want to Work" but how can people afford to stay home and not make money?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:41 AM PST

Okay thought this would be a good sub to ask this in since we have a lot of business owners here. I was just at Dunkin Donuts grabbing a coffee and it took about 20 minutes, one person was working the store. The guys in line in front of me were chatting about how "nobody wants to work"

Here's what I don't understand though, how can people, most of whom live paycheck to paycheck, just decide to take a stance and choose not to work until they can get better pay or working conditions or benefits? At some point don't you just have to take a job to pay your rent or put food on the table?

I get we've had a shift in industries people want or don't want to work in ie mainly fast food, retail and hospitality, but it seems every industry is facing shortages.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how someone can just choose not to work and not make money. Have younger people moved back in with family, cut expenses and can choose not to work? Does a two parent working household decide one person will just stay home with the kids instead of working? Trying to figure out how people can take this stance but still live?

This is just one anecdote but a buddy of mine's brother in law has been laid off collecting unemployment for the past two years, he says he'll only take a job making 50k a year or more as he got used to that during the pandemic, he never earned 50k previously in his life. My buddy talks about this guy like he's an idiot so the chances of him making 50k maybe aren't great. I asked what they plan to do as they recently bought a pretty expensive house, he said my sister will pay for everything so in their case he's just going to sit out of the workforce and his wife is going to pay the bills until he gets his 50k a year job.

Just curious from what you guys are seeing of employees leaving what are people doing? Are they starting their own busiensses? Doing gig work? relying on family?

Free SEO help for small businesses

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:02 PM PST

I did this a while back and got some good feedback from people, so thought I'd do it again. If you run a small business and are having trouble with SEO/google rankings, post here your website URL and target location (local/national).

I'll reply to your comment with what you need to be doing when I get a minute to scan your site - I'll try not make my replies too long to overwhelm you, but I'll elaborate on anything and give steps on exactly what to do or if even SEO is worthwhile for your type of business.

EDIT: I'll get to all your comments when I wake up, going to bed now

Anyone willing to share how much they're making yearly with their small business?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:24 PM PST

I work in a corporate role right now but have always wanted to do my own thing owning my small business. The corp. pays me a ton but I find the job so unfulfilling. Just curious if folks would be able to share (high-level) what your business is and what your actual take home ends up being.

I have an interest in opening a small, local retail store but I know that's broad.

    Hello All!

I am a new business owner and am trying to enter the ecommerce space. I haven't gotten many conversions on my website and I was wondering if there are inherent issues with my design or placement.

Is there something I'm not doing that could potentially boost conversions?

I made this website on Sqaurespace and sell track and field apparel/merchandise on it.

    Hiring First Employee in Oregon

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:41 PM PST

I opened a small pet boutique in July this year and I would like to hire a part-time employee that would be running the shop by themselves from 11-6 pm 3X a week. My question is how do you handle breaks or lunches when you only have one employee? I live in a small town that is slower in the winter and will pickup in the spring/summer. I just can't see myself having two employees at the same time during winter slow season.. unless there is no other option

How to market a software agency (in Germany)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:39 AM PST

    Hi guys,

TL;DR: Where are you searching for software development agencies?

I've been freelancing as a software developer for quite some time and I do have some success with it. Recently I decided to go a step further and start an agency. I was expecting an incoming flow of projects, similar to my freelancing activity, where I basically just posted my CV on a couple of freelancing platforms, so I hired a senior and a junior/intermediate developer starting in January.

I target startUps or smaller companies to collaborate on their projects. This market seems to work quite differently compared to the freelancing platforms where I used to find projects for myself as most of the companies posting projects there are rather large and are searching for just one dev to be part of a large team.

We can provide a wide range of services related to software development, but I have a hard time finding projects here in Germany. I'm quite sure there is a market for our service and I am just looking in the wrong places.

So this goes out to you, startup founders and owners of small businesses: Where are you looking for software developers? Are there websites or networks I need to know?

Best regards and thank you in advance!

I'm a terrible sales person and I'm on a low. Help?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:55 PM PST

I've been trying to get my online jewellery business up and running for about 1.5 years now. I've been making jewellery for a while and worked on learning more about crafting before seriously selling. I took the leap, registered in my country, got packaging, got a small ecommerce site, insta page, all that. However, I have sold literally nothing. Not one piece. I get likes on on insta, people visit the online store but no one buys anything. I had a major break in my mental health so the amount of marketing and posts I made slumped in the past few (a lot) months. But what has me super depressed is the fact that I have all the pieces I made to sell when I launched. All of them. Not even one piece sold. I officially launched April 30th this year, now we're almost in December. I do not have the heart to try and re-advertise all these (by now) old pieces. However, I really needed some money from sales to buy new material. If I make new pieces and they don't sell again...then what will I use to restock? I have no idea how to turn interest in my work into pieces sold. Has anyone been in my situation? If yes, how did you get out?

Advice Needed - Client With Unpaid Invoice Wants More Work Done

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:00 PM PST

Hi there... we did about $2400 worth of work for a client who hasn't paid the invoice for over a month now (it's 13 days late). He asked for more work to be done so the dev told him that more work can't be done till he pays this invoice. He said he can't pay it all at once and asked if he could do a payment plan. He wants the new work done in December. Has anyone run into this? What would you recommend? This is our oldest client and we don't want to damage the relationship.

What is the biggest obstacle that prevents you from using video to promote your business and/or hire a videographer/video production company?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:57 AM PST

    Hi everyone! Alfred here.

I run a video production company (small biz, we are a couple of people now). I'm restructuring our way of promoting the studio and trying to move away from hard-selling campaigns and relying more on stories and valuable content sharing to attract new (and recurring) customers.

Since video production can seem like an extremely expensive endeavor and a luxury some businesses can't afford, I'd like to know the position of other business owners and their perspective in regards to creating video for their business and if they would hire a videographer.

    Healthcare small business peeps?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:48 AM PST

    Hi all-

I am an occupational therapist who does power mobility design, home modifications, and safety/in-home aid assessments for the biggest portion of my duties at my full time job.

I spent a solid year building a business to provide home safety assessment consultation as a one man LLC. Part of that was getting set up to accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and Medicare as payment. It was a nightmarish process and before I even got to submit any charges, I moved to another state and found out I would have to start the process all over again to get set up for payment.

I'm in a place now where I'm wanting to pursue this again, but I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth it to get set up for payment from the sources? I would not have a "billing department", so just curious if this is worth the trouble or if I should pursue other pay sources.

Are there any other subs that may be useful in this process?

Anyone have any words of advice or a caution?

FWIW This is being pursued as a side gig.

I hope this does not break any rules. I did a quick search and wasn't able to find much on this.

    Pushiest sales people?

    Regrettable products?

    Where to find product

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:04 PM PST

I would like to start a beauty supply store. I live in an area where my customers would mostly be African American. Does anyone know of the best place to purchase product? Does anyone know of a good distributor? I have looked up the answer online and I mostly find people trying to sell me product without any way of finding out if it's actually the best deal. I'm asking here in case anyone has any experience or knowledge that can guide me away from making mistakes by way of who I choose. Thank you in advance!

How to justify paying for an employee / contractor trip

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:49 PM PST

We've had a good year and I want to treat a couple employees and contractor by taking them on a trip but im not entirely sure how to justify. I think its probably good for company morale. When I was working for my last company, I would earn Presidents circle trips. I just don't know how they justified.

Is it like Employees helped bring $xyz profit, and we can afford a trip at 2% of that profit for them and significant others?

    Small business name advice?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:52 AM PST

Hey everyone! I'm looking to start a business in the new year - it's a print on demand selling tees and tote bags - all designed by me!

I have a few ideas and would love some other opinions!

I wanted to incorporate the word chichu which is a Chinese phrase/word that means "to walk slowly".

    My options:

    • chichu creative
    • club chichu
    • chichu & co
    • chichu collective
    • hello chichu
    • chichu studio

I want the brand to be around me and my mental health and to raise awareness of mental health, dunno if that gives anymore context.

Feedback would be welcomed and appreciated!

    Thanks in advance :)

    Price board

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:39 PM PST

As a feed mill most of our products are out in the warehouse so we need some way to display out pricing in the store.

Currently we have old white boards. They are logo boards from the feed manufacturer we rep.
Since we just did a complete building restoration I want to get something nicer.

I would prefer something not chalk or dry erase as my handwriting sucks plus the price varies based on the grain markets so sometimes the prices change daily and out current board is permanently stained.

Im not really finding anything…. Etsy was kind of a bust. Found a cool looking pegboard from a company called Proffer but it's in NZ and they are spending and shipping costs as much as the product.

So, anyone got any fabulous ideas?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:08 AM PST

    Sorry about my title typo.

My wife and I are setting up our occult retail shop at a flea market that has interior space for monthly rental. Open 7 days a week, gets around 10k people in for traffic on the weekends.

We are wondering if anyone has had any retail experience or of a flea market and what are your experiences.

    Hiring service, employer of record?

How do i sell my products to another business?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:39 AM PST

Hi. Hope everyone's well. I've run my own cake business and i make cakes, brownies & cookies. Theres a burger food truck here which gets amazing traffic and now has a full branch too. They've a small menu w no desserts. I was planning on introducing the owner with cookies & brownies for him to keep at his shop. Can anyone guide me to how a conversation would like that go? Because I'm sure he (the owner) has more questions and I don't know how i would tackle them. Things like how much he would get from it? How much i would get from it? Will be a percentage? Will i sell him per unit? I'm just very confused. Idk whats the norm of these types of conversations.

Issues With Quickbooks & taxes & such

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:11 AM PST

I'm going to be doing business taxes for the first time for 2021 and saw a discount sale for Quickbooks and decided to try it out.

So it integrated with paypal just fine. Cool. I only use that paypal for my business anyway. Etsy makes deposits into my actual bank accnt but there's no way I'm adding that as I would have to log in to edit each and every single minute charge in my entire life.

Beyond that, it is supposed to integrate into Etsy to make life easier and I tried but nothing happened. So as far as this dang thing is concerned I ONLY made what is currently sitting in my paypal account.

Quickbooks also keeps nagging me to make invoices to send and I don't have anyone to invoice as it's just a tiny Etsy shop.

I just want to organize and figure out how to pay my taxes T.T
