Has sales improved your ability to speak/socialize, or do you feel too tired after work to bother?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:24 AM PST

I'm considering sales and this is my primary concern. I am incredibly sociable and "on", and I worry that it may cause apathy after treating it as a job. I feel like I'd fit naturally into this job, but I'm concerned with becoming jaded.

    To the engineers/STEM backgrounds

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:31 AM PST

Im an engineer that has switched to sales and done well for myself (fortunate to be in this position).

I've helped a few other engineers land sales jobs and want to make more publicly available content for this niche.

For those of you with STEM backgrounds looking to get into sales, what are the biggest questions you have when making the change? Would you enjoy content geared around getting a job or also how to evaluate if sales is right for you? Etc...

Thanks for any ideas/inspiration here. Just looking to get your perspective to make a backlog of info and give it out for free. Not looking to become a LinkedIn influencer lmao.

Am I not living up to my potential if I go into sales?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:48 PM PST

This post is inspired in part by u/GabiCule's recent post about being a black woman in tech sales. I'm an East Asian dude born and raised in the UK with immigrant parents. I recently graduated with a law degree from a 'prestigious' university here (top of the Russell Group unis). But I didn't really want to study law nor become a lawyer (at least in a large corporate law firm or BigLaw). Not that I have anything against being a lawyer. But now, after looking around for jobs, I've stumbled upon sales as a career path (in particular tech/SaaS sales)- which I didn't even know was a career until a few months ago- and the more I read about it the more it sounds like something I would enjoy doing.

The problem is that my parents are convinced that I'm throwing away my 'potential' if I go into sales rather than becoming a lawyer. They say that:

    • I only want to go into sales because its 'easier' than law and that I'm just choosing the 'easier path' ('anyone' can do sales- all salespeople do is present the product and take orders, apparently). And it's not just that the job itself is 'easier', but getting into sales is easier- it's easier to get a SDR/BDR role than to get a Training Contract (graduate scheme) at a law firm.
    • By the time I'm in my 30s or 40s I'll look back and regret not going into law (or some other 'prestigious career' like IB or consulting) because I'll have hit some earnings ceiling and can't pivot (because these prestigious careers only hire graduates)
    • I'm setting my ambitions way too low- they don't get why I want to be a 'little salesman' (translated from Chinese) when I have the qualifications to do something which people 'respect' (to them, being in sales is basically the same as working part-time at a supermarket- a job, not a career)

The question to r/sales- to what extent are they right? Would I be throwing away some of my potential if I go into sales? Am I 'settling for less' and choosing the 'comfortable' path if I go into sales rather than law?

I'm aware that I might be inadvertently pissing off everyone here, but honestly I don't know- as I said, I only knew that tech sales was a thing a few months ago and I barely know anyone in the industry.

    Cheers everyone

Is it difficult to get a remote sales job?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:38 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I just started a sales job at a well-known company. My current position requires me to meet clients in person at least a couple of days out of the week. I'm currently based in America but my goal is to get a remote sales job and move to Europe. Is it unrealistic to work in my current company to get some experience and try to land well-paying remote sales job that will allow me to move to Europe?

How long should I do Door to Door sales before moving into better versions of sales?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:20 AM PST

Started D2D selling solar panels about 3.5 months ago and I've kind of fallen in love with sales. I love the psychology of it, the confidence I now have, the feeling of executing the perfect pitch, getting the sale, just everything. It's also soul crushing when you go a bit without a sale but I'm starting to get to the point where that is very rare.

But my question is, how long should I do door to door before trying to get a better sales job. I enjoy my job but don't plan to be here forever and others have told me that d2d looks great on a resume. So I'm just enjoying the job for now and letting it build my resume. However I have no college degree. So what amount of time would a future employer like to see me be at this job?

    Car Sales to SaaS

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:57 PM PST

Looking to transition into SaaS and need some advice… I was previously with a luxury/exotic group where the pay-plan was eventually changed to have a commission cap. I didn't quit right away because I was still making decent money, but my motivation was slowly disappearing each month and I decided to just walk out after having had enough.

Now, I'm looking into Tech Sales after coming across this sub. I've made a LinkedIn and started applying places but would appreciate any recommendations anyone here might be able to make on places to look for. With my Automotive background, I'd like to find something within that space. I'm based in AZ and wouldn't mind a hybrid role.

    Thank you!

    Do y'all donate money? Where?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:39 PM PST

Hey all, making some decent money for the first time ever and have some extra this year. I feel like donating some might be a good use since otherwise I'll probably blow it on something dumb...

Where do you guys like to donate? I've given a little money to a sponsored family program and Wikipedia (lol) in the last week, but would like to hear others suggestions. Thanks!

What's the best SaaS sector for a recent college grad to get into and why?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:30 PM PST

There's so many to choose from, and they all seem great, but is there really a top choice, considering the current marketplace?

Would it be cybersecurity, storage, disaster recovery, healthcare, wellness (e.g. Calm app), education, fintech, some type of industry-specific compliance software, or something else?

Does anybody know of good apps for prerecording voicemails

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:56 PM PST

I'm in car sales and I regularly make 80+ calls, emails and texts per day. About half of that time is spent saying a lot of the same thing over and over.

So I figured if I had some voicemail templates, I'd be able to save a significant amount of time.

I closed my first $10k sale yesterday! It was awesome! I know I need more training, where should I look?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:03 PM PST

I've been professionally selling for a few months now and I can't get enough. I'm 28 and I want to learn more because this is the life baby! I work in automotive, selling cars, insurance and auto repair.

I've read several books so far: Think and grow rich, How to win friends, Sell or Be Sold, 10x, Be Obsessed or Be Average, how to master the art of selling, the psychology of sales, The little red book of selling and a few others. In addition I've started Cardone University!

What else can I read, consum and grow with? All the Facebook groups for service writers are absolutely horrible..

Fair Commission, any useful help will be awarded

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:27 AM PST

Hi I'm a small business owner who is looking for advice on what a fair commission is for a new project im trialling with my employees.

I would like to offer them a commission for any wholesale business they bring to the company

The thing I'm stuck on is

Do I offer them for example

5% of any business they bring me for life

10% of the first months order

Or a £250 finders fee for any clients they bring in

The product is bread so the margins are good on my end and it's based in the UK

Anyone do telephone mortgage sales in here willing to help a girl out?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:42 AM PST

I've been at my company for 4 months and just got licensed recently. The rejection sometimes is very brutal but I'm starting to get a little bit better.

The company I work for has a very good process. They focus more on the emotion and relationship rather the product. I guess my question is how you get over the I'm working with someone else or the I'm not interested resistance.

It's a lot of calls and I really want to be successful in this and do what I need to do to be productive.

What are some things generally people do so they don't get burnt out? Or things that people do when it's constant rejection and not feel defeated?

Interest in my websites - need to know how to negotiate a fair deal

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:31 AM PST

    Hi all,

Long story short, I bought a franchise for an adverting website about 6 months ago. About 3 months ago, the franchise told us a deal was to be had from a distribution company to place around 10 ads on each individual website we own, totalling $1000 per website ( I own 8, so this would be $8000 revenue)

I've had someone make contact on behalf of a group asking about renting/purchasing my sites. I've mentioned this deal to them which is why my asking price for the sites was $80,000.

They are, however, asking if they were to rent the websites from me, would this deal be included?

I have never worked in business to business sales before, or anything to do with online advertising for that matter, I bought this franchise as a side hustle to work on and build up my knowledge and get an extra income.

So my question is effectively if this company wants to rent these websites from me, do I have to include this deal with them or would it be acceptable to negotiate a percentage?

Should I start selling like this?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:25 AM PST

    I'm reading smart calling,

And someone gave me this idea

My background is in opex, had japanese sense is for 5 years

They taught me ways to improve and sell projects

I'm thinking on calling, and offering project pipelines exploring my solution and other possible solutions as part of solving problems

Once this company whic sold supplies, they bought a laboratory for fda requirements, they started using the lab in order to provide free test using their lab, with free workshops, they would send engineers, and finally sell the product with the science behind the analysis of why we needed their products

(we ended buying from them because of all the problems we solved, but also ended up buying other solutions as a bundle)

So, instead of just pitching, offering my free consultation in order to create a full solution (we're a startup selling to hr)

Can I get into fintech sales?! I can’t do the 11 hour financial sales days

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:56 PM PST

I'm a 22 year old at a shitty financial firm on Long Island making only commissions (bullshit, I know) from my straight cold calling job. I am going to stay here till I get some months experience in sales then try to make the move to tech sales. I will have finance degree from a mid/upper university with a 3.2GPA ,my series 7 license, series 63 license along with the months of sales experience.

Ideally, I would be looking for a REMOTE 9-5 tech sales job that has a $50k+ base salary plus commissions. Preferably an SDR role because I don't know if I could handle more than that since I only have knowledge of finance and not the tech industry. Then hopefully the ability to move up to BDR/AE years in the future. My main concern is I don't have any tech experience and if I won't be hired because of it or I won't be able to learn about it as quick as I think I can.

Has anyone made a switch like this and is it reasonable with my background? I think the work life balance is better and any pay is better than where I'm currently at anyway. Tech seems like a great industry to get into now a days and my stock broker gig was a dying industry.
