New coronavirus variant with ‘worrying’ number of mutations - stocks down

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 06:53 PM PST

A variant with 'worrying' number of mutations has been detected in South Africa, Botswana, and Hong Kong.
Experts are concerned its mutations may help it to avoid antibodies produced by vaccines and treatments.
It has been detected 82 times, as of Thursday. For now, it's being closely monitored.

At the time of this post SP500 futures are down -40.25 (-0.86%) with the lows reaching -1%

On one hand I hope this is over speculation on the other hand it may be a good timing for vaccine stocks rebound.

$NVAX and $MRNA have seen some more positive sentiments recently. What do you think?

Expectations for S&P 500 Average Returns in the future?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 07:08 PM PST

I understand this question may be viewed a blindly optimistic investor hoping for great returns during the longest bull run of all time, but I think it is worth the discussion. We have used the average of about 6-8% return from the S&P500 over time. Over the past 10 years, the average has jumped up near 12%. I understand that this should not be expected to continue going forward. With the economic growth we have been seeing globally, it would be hard for me to believe that 6-8% will be the average in the next 40 years.

Keeping the historically crazy returns we have seen to the side, is it possible that higher returns could be expected from the S&P500 going forward because of increasing tech and advancing economy?

    Can I make unlimited trades

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:44 PM PST

Earlier this year I decided to try my hand at day trading, I signed up for a cash account with Merrill edge because they offer commission free trades .I've taken a break from day trading for a little, just focused on paper trading and learning for now. However I was going through monthly statements earlier in the year and realized I was making up to 100-150 trades in day from scaling in and out of multiple positions. I just wanted to ask if when Merrill edge says unlimited commission free trades are they really unlimited. Will I be hit with hidden fees or is there some rule on how many total trades you can make.

    ponos industries stock mini-tender offers

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:08 PM PST

TLDR; stockholders who receive these mini-tender offers need to be extra cautious and check the fine print. my view is stockholders get almost no benefit by tendering, and risk having their shares locked up indefinitely without any ability to withdraw!

if you google "ponos tender offer", you will find many listings of these mini offers - offering to buy some blue chip stocks from existing stockholders at higher prices, often outrageously higher. sounds too good to be true! however, almost nothing has been written about this odd phenomenon.

several of my friends have received these offers, and the legalise is highly confusing for the regular folks. i personally found it outright misleading, even though the legal fine print is very clear. so i thought i should highlight some key points and thoughts (based on the few that i've gone through):

    1. these mini-offers are completely legal, and there is nothing the SEC or the company/board can do about it.
    2. by SEC rules, the board has to respond to these mini-offers within 10 days, and (i think) almost all have been rejected by the board.
    3. the offer price is only paid when the stock reaches that level (or higher) BEFORE the expiration of the offer. but ponos is under no obligation to pay more than the offer price - so if your stock is now say $70, the tender is for $100, and the stock goes up to $150, you MIGHT get just $100 even though they sold it for $150.
    4. the expiration is usually for a short duration (ie 6 months), but they have the absolute right to extend it if the stock price hasn't reached the offer price.
    5. note that once you have tendered your stock, that right is irrevocable and cannot be cancelled until expiry.
    6. by tendering, you will also lose control of your stock and cannot sell or withdraw it - until expiry. the terms state that you can withdraw your stock 2 weeks after expiry but ONLY IF it doesn't get extended. so it is very possible that the expiry gets extended every time, which means control of your stock can be lost indefinitely!
    7. given the expiration can be extended indefinitely, i fail to see how this can benefit the stockholder at all? the stockholder would be better off placing a sell limit order for a high price and wait indefinitely until his price is reached (with the option to change his/her mind at anytime)!
    8. if it is as easy as placing a long dated high limit order to achieve the same result, ask yourself, why would someone pay huge amounts to lawyers to create and file these term sheets repeatedly for so many stocks?

my dad used to tell me, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it almost always is!

stay safe everyone. appreciate any comments.

Finviz Screener Settings for Fundamentals & Technicals!

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:10 PM PST

Would love to get feedback on some Finviz settings that I made recently. Essentially how these were composed were from comparing good companies in the stock market to bad ones. Then seeing what the good companies did extremely well and what the bad companies did extremely bad. Then i'd adjust the settings to where we'd be able to avoid a great deal of stocks who's fundamentals and/or technicals didn't line up with the criteria that I created.

With that said, here's a few categories that really stuck out from the steady upward trending companies:

    Fundamentals:

    - All of the companies had positive Earnings Per Share (a company's profit divided by the outstanding shares of its common stock) this year.
    - Institutional Ownership: This particular category varied amongst the companies, but the lowest that I came across had a little over 10% of institutional ownership. Most had a much higher percentage, but to avoid leaving good companies out of our screener settings, I stuck with an above 10% setting in this category.
    - Positive Sales Q/Q: This should be of no surprise. Investors love to see progress being made when it comes to sales. Especially from quarter-to-quarter.

    - Short Float: It's nothing more frustrating than being in a stock that is being shorted to death. Well, I guess it's a good thing that these companies have a short float under 1%. This provides less resistance for the stock to move upward and helps us be able to profit larger percentages/amounts in the long run.
Edit: Had to use the under 5% option for this particular setting. If you're able to place it at under 1%, then feel free to do so.

    - Positive Return on Assets (an indicator of how profitable a company is relative to its total assets).

    - Positive Return on Equity (calculated by dividing net income by shareholders' equity).

    - Positive Return on Investment (an approximate measure of an investment's profitability).

    - Positive Gross Margin (a company's sales minus its cost of goods sold).

    - Positive Operating Margin (measures the percentage of revenue a company keeps as operating profit).

    - Positive Net Profit Margin (measures how much net income or profit is generated as a percentage of revenue).

    Technicals:

    - Above 20 Simple Moving Average (SMA)
    - Above 50 Simple Moving Average (SMA)
    - Above 200 Simple Moving Average (SMA)

The importance of a stock being positioned above these indicators will show that the companies' technicals are matching their fundamentals and providing that much needed cash appreciation to its shareholders. Not to mention that when a stock breaks into a new high while being in this uptrends, they have the potential to run significantly higher with relative ease. I'll mention that for anyone who may see the charts in these settings & feel that the stocks are too high up or that it won't go higher, don't count them out. You'd be surprised how many times I thought the same thing just for a stock to continue higher. I've seen this kind of stuff happen time and time again and I'm sure many of you have as well.

    Growth Account

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 07:14 PM PST

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope these holidays being nothing but blessing to you and your family and of course your accounts!!! So I'm opening up a growth account and want it to be strictly only indexes/ETF's. I'm going to be starting off with $6000 and will continue to deposit $1,000 on a weekly basis. This is going to be a very long term account for me as I am currently 26 years old and I just want this account to run for years. I currently have a dividend account as well, but thought why not create an account that I can fill with good index's and ETF's and just let it grow over the years while averaging in on everything. I was thinking of the following

DIA QQQ SPYD VOO FNILX SWPPX VUG SDY VNQ VTWO SCHE

Any suggestions on which ones I should start with? And which ones I should focus on more? And which ones I should just leave out

International stock ETFs on days that market is closed

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:52 AM PST

I'm having a hard time finding the right answer on Google, so hoping someone can enlighten me.

For international ETFs like VXUS, which hold international stocks, what happens when the stock market is closed for US holidays like today, Thanksgiving?

For example, I see news that European stocks are edging up today despite inflation, but VXUS is closed (traded on NASDAQ exchange). Will gains or losses on international ETFs be applied the next trading day when NASDAQ is open for trading, or...?

The rest of this post is to fill space. The rest of the this post is to fill space.
