Client wants deposit refunded for service he can no longer receive due to unforeseen “medical condition”… What would you do?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:24 AM PST

After emailing him that deposits are non-refundable as stated in the contract… his response:

"I understand but I have told you well in advance and this is a medical condition i wasn't aware of and don't know how long I will be under treatment. So I request you on humanitarian grounds to refund as I would need any and all funds for my treatment. I know the contract states that the deposit is non-refundable but I would request you to refund and we promise we will work with you in the future.

    Regards, …"

This service is scheduled in two weeks, I have no chance of booking anyone else.

Bosses want to leave business to me (husband/wife). They've done well for themselves but the business is rocky right now. I'd be taking a substantial pay cut owning.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 06:02 PM PST

I don't want to work for $14/hour 55 hours a week. It's that or update my resume (already looked into resume services). I'm 35, ready to take a risk. But is this the small biz opportunity I've waited for? I can't afford the right employees to make this work where it is right now. It seems like every other day I want it less. I'd have 2 employees. One we have and one I'd need.

Anyone here turned something around that seemed less than hopeful?

Is anyone shipping to Australia right now?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:09 PM PST

I have a backlog of about 25 orders that I can't send to Australia right now. They range in weight from 4oz to 3 pounds. The customers are all very understanding (they're all long time customers - we've been in business for over 20 years) but I'd really like to get these off my plate. I don't want to ship priority express. Is there another alternative to the USPS that is similar in price or does anyone have any insight as to when shipping to Australia through the post office will resume?

Has anyone left/is considering leaving the family business?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:46 AM PST

Hey everyone! I have personal experience leaving the family business, and I know how tough it can be to even think about leaving (almost feels like treason). I want to help people in similar situations who are either considering leaving or know they want to, but don't know how to do it without damaging relationships and/or finding their own path.

I'd love to start creating content (blog posts, etc.) diving into some topics around this difficult decision/transition. If anyone has been or is in a tough spot like this, I'd love for you to shout out what kind of topics would help you! Or even just what's bothering you/holding you back.

Thanks everyone, and remember, the family business does not define you!

Would you fire your accountant over poor communication?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:42 PM PST

My husband and I have complicated taxes (we each own our own business in addition to owning rental properties) and our accountant is, as far as I can tell, a great accountant as far as tax knowledge and filing goes. The problem is communication. I almost never speak with him directly, and all of our communication goes through someone who works in his office. My most recent exchange with this office manager went like this: 1) I asked for something, not knowing there would be a charge because the office manager never mentioned it; 2) After they completed the work, I got a credit card authorization from the office manager, who said they were charging us a fairly large amount; 3) I asked for an invoice; 4) She sent an invoice for hundreds more than the figure she named when she sent the authorization; 5) I asked about the discrepancy; 6) The office manager said there was a mistake with the invoice and sent an invoice for even MORE money than the original, mentioning nothing about the initial lower fee she named. This type of thing is fairly standard. I'm sure this isn't shadiness on the part of the accountant--it's just carelessness and poor communication on the part of the office staff. Our accountant is so in-demand that he doesn't take new clients, and my sense is that we're a low priority for him. I can't decide whether we should just suck up all the poor communication--which is mostly just annoying--and be grateful to have a knowledgeable accountant, or if we can do better. How hard is it to find a great accountant? This one is better than my last one, who did my taxes wrong.

    Customer filed false chargeback claim…

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:39 PM PST

I run a small business online, a customer placed an order and I had some other stuff going on so the shipping was delayed, but the order was fulfilled and his order was delivered. I found out that the customer filed a chargeback with his credit card company claiming that he never made the purchase, despite the fact that he has emailed me about his order. I filed a dispute with the website building company and showed screenshots that the order was delivered and that he contacted me about the order. The decision is in a few weeks but I'm still worried that I'm not gonna get my money or my product back.

    Preparing expenses?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 06:54 PM PST

    Hey all,

I'm trying to be better about paying all of my business expenses out of my business account. However, I know that I paid for some business expenses out of a personal account. I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem for preparing taxes and if I should try to do anything to fix this?

Is there an easy way to hire someone?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 02:50 PM PST

My wife's small business, 1 person LLC, doesn't make enough to be able to afford paying a cpa / ea . She's wanting to hire someone to help her, they would only be working 4-5 hours a week, and would dip into what she makes. What's the minimum amount of paperwork we can do to hire someone?

We are completely okay with it being a contractor -type position where the person isn't officially an employee.

The only book keeping we do is monitoring the money in/out. I paid a legal service to start the business cause we had no idea what we were doing, and we will have to it someone for taxes, but I can't find any affordable option for just someone who can take care of any of the legal paperwork for this.

    Please ELI5

Really struggling to get my head around starting a business..

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 06:16 AM PST

    (In the uk)

I keep being told different things by different people on how to start up my own small retail business. Just hoping to gather more info and hear from people who did it themselves? I've been advised to use Tide but I'm always sceptical about involving another company. I literally have nothing right now but a mind full of ideas.. I can't even buy items wholesale as the websites require you to make an account with a business number etc. It feels kind of overwhelming and I just don't know where to actually start. Would appreciate any advice people have to offer. Thanks

What to do with my LLC when moving from Washington to Oregon

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 02:08 PM PST

I run a small LLC for my art business. I recently moved from Seattle to Portland and am wondering what to do about the LLC. My guess is to continue paying to keep it in good standing in Washington, but register an agent in Oregon so I can keep doing business here.

Is that unwise? Should I just dissolve the LLC in Washington and be a sole proprietorship to save on annual report fees, etc?

I've done my best researching but would love some advice.

What would you want to see from a web design and development blog?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:30 PM PST

I'm in the industry and have a lot of good knowledge from little tips and tricks to the architecture of a website. Big and small things that I think could help small business when looking for a developer to make sure their dev does what they should and can, as well as tweaks they themselves can do.

So I'm going to launch a blog soon and I'm trying to get a collection of topics to write about, directly from small businesses and as my blog starts and continues I'll be able to continue to figure out good topics that small businesses actually want to learn about.

So what are some things you'd like to know more about with regards to your website, the design, functionality, optimization, SEO/Google friendliness, etc?

I’d appreciate some help from someone who has run a laundromat

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:45 AM PST

I'm a 9-5 career kinda guy in my late 20s and looking to expand my revenue streams into brick and mortar. I own a few rentals in a city where there's a lot of working class folks and a high amount of additional units in backyards without laundry machines in unit. I co-founded a beverage company that we recently sold and have some liquid capital I want to use over the next year for something that'll push me to learn a new industry.

I'm just looking for some anecdotes on owning a laundromat. Mainly could use some high level data, like number of monthly transactions, number of machines, size of your city, revenue, expenses. And then any sentiment you have on the industry.

Please feel free to PM. I have a few business partners I work with and we're located in San Diego, Austin, or Spokane so if you happen to be in either of those then one of us would love to sit down with you and buy you a taco, BBQ, or meth, respectively.

Information on digital illiteracy rates among US small business owners?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:36 PM PST

I work for a non-profit that assists small business owners with their challenges by connecting them with bro-bono advisors. Our most requested service is marketing and digital media help, and it leaves me wondering: what is the rate of digital illiteracy among US small business owners? I'm defining this as: "A lack of ability and skills to create, evaluate, learn, and find information on online media and digital platforms through the usage of technology." Are there resources out there to learn what percentage of online-facing small business owners have one or fewer digital properties (like a Facebook page, or a domain name)?

    Start Up Tips and Advice?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:48 AM PST

I am a college student looking to start a small business to earn money for school but I am having trouble on where I should start, right now I know what I want to sell but I am having trouble getting things like payment options setup along with creating a website, I want to try to stay away from websites like Etsy because of the seller/advertising fees.

I am also having trouble finding out if I need to setup an LLC for my small business which will basically just be me running it, also do I need to worry about having an LLC if I am not looking to expand in the future?

Any advice is welcome and greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Liability insurance for flea market booth

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:59 AM PST

Local indoor flea market says vendors are liable for any injuries in their booth. Have a call into my insurance agent, but would appreciate any insights folks here might have on affordable and reliable insurance providers.

Can you guys review my new landing page?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:16 PM PST

Hey all, I'm a web developer and make lightning fast, Google/SEO friendly and custom websites. I'm not a designer so that's usually the biggest complaint, so I thought I'd post my site after playing with some different designs and see what you think.

So I'd love to know about the look and design of the site above the content but all questions, comments, or concerns are welcome and appreciated. I made this landing page with React and tailwind if you're interested in the tech stack.

    New site: https://customcode.netlify.app

    Old site: https://wbttemplate.netlify.app

Note: the links lead no where since I just built it, but they will!

My goal is to have a bunch of different components, designs, and layouts to use to have a very solid foundation for my sites and more variety for my clients, which allows me to spend more time on each website. Lmk what you think and I'd be happy to answer any questions about my site or yours. Cheers!

    Slacked on jewlery bookkeeping

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:07 AM PST

Hi all. I (30f) started making handmade earrings and bracelets about 2 years ago. I have sold some products for about a year, cash transactions and Etsy.

I have not done any bookkeeping for this and am really fighting myself to start so I can continue making pieces and be confident that i have the proper legal and financial paperwork.

I am vowing to start inventory tracking based on what I have now, but I'm concerned about the past year of work that I haven't tracked.

Can anyone offer advice on if I should work on backtracking and what I actually need to document? Or am I ok to start now, and only track what I have sold via Etsy? I have a stack of receipts from a while back, but couldn't tell you which inventory costs what at this point.

I feel like I've already failed and want to get myself back up and running. I don't plan to make big bucks, I truly enjoy making pieces and sharing with the world.

Removed my name from an LLC with the S.O.S. Do I need to contact the IRS?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:17 AM PST

Long story short, I started a business with someone and we had a disagreement and I removed myself from the LLC. I know when we started the business we also had to contact the IRS to file with them. Calling them leads me nowhere and there website is too confusing so I thought I would ask here: do I need to contact the IRS to let them know I left the company or is removing myself through the secretary of state enough?

    TIA
