My experience of mindfulness in sales Sales and Selling

My experience of mindfulness in sales Sales and Selling

My experience of mindfulness in sales

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 05:01 AM PDT

There's no doubt sales can be stressful.

The line between success and failure is better defined than any other role, and therefore is obvious to everyone. We face constant rejection. We befriend strangers for a living. We put up with a lot of shit, internally and externally.

It's part of the gig, and the reason why we are remunerated so well.

For the last few months, I have been practicing daily mindfulness — mainly through guided meditations.

I have tracked my mood throughout.

Here is what I have noticed:

    • Significantly better sleep. I can go to sleep quickly and it is rare for me to wake up in the middle of the night.

    • Significantly more stable mood. I feel like I am less tied into the emotional rollercoaster that sales can be. I trust my process, and don't let the little things get to me.

    • Possibly linked, but I am significantly calmer. I know I have mindfulness in my back pocket if I ever feel stressed.

    • more confident. I was always outwardly confident, but I feel more inwardly confident now too.

    • Healthy detachment. I feel like I can take a step back and look at my career objectively, rather than being so close to it that I am constantly fighting fires.

In short, a whole host of benefits for 10-30 minutes practice a day.

Honestly, everyone should do this imho.

Mid-40’s too late to get back into sales?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 05:42 AM PDT

I started off in sales, then recruiting. The market collapsed and decided to develop some hard skills and went to an IT school and for the past 10+ years embarked on my IT career. Thinking to get back into sales (Saas) looking at remote entry-level BDR roles. I've casted the net wide applying to pharma and med-device sales as well. Is it too late for someone like me? Thanks.

So your manager gave you a massive list of 1000 accounts - now what?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 05:56 AM PDT

    Tier 'em.

Tier 1 accounts - Look exactly like your customer base. You know they have problems you can solve.
Tier 2 accounts - Looks similar to your customer base. They check some boxes, but not all.
Tier 3 accounts - Check one or two boxes of your ideal customer base, but largely experimental.

Your tier determines your treatment plan.
Tier 1 - Red carpet VIP treatment. Work in that cold call and social selling magic and a higher volume of touches.
Tier 2 - Slightly customized, but scalable. Account based or industry based personalization.
Tier 3 - No calls or social selling, just email.

    Try it!

I got fired in a very interesting way (alternate title: let me tell'yah my tale of woe)!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 04:14 PM PDT

Alright. I was an SDR for a SaaS company. Three-ish months ago I went through a terrible breakup, fucked my numbers WAY up. Went from a mid-tier performer to dead last. That's on me, can't blame anyone else for that.

About mid-way through October, my boss, let's call him Bradley, puts me on a PIP. He says I have to book 5 cold demos before the end of the month, he was really nice about it. On the 27th of October I've only booked 3 demos, lol, shit. I go to Bradley, I tell him "Listen man, I know I fumbled this, I respect the position this puts you in, I just want you to know that I've really enjoyed working for you." He gets this look like he's about to cry, he tells me he really likes me and he wishes me luck, and I think, hoo'boy, "luck"!? I'm definitely getting fired.

I make my rounds in the cube farm, I tell all my friends that I'm about to get canned, and another SDR says, "Nah dude, that's bullshit. You've got talent, you could easily be a top performer, they just suck dick at continuing education here. It's not YOUR fault that they neglected to train you." I think, ehh, well, I could've tried a little harder, but he went on to say, "First thing tomorrow morning, you need to go to [Bradley's boss, let's call him] Marcus, you need to tell him, 'Please give me another month, I wasn't trained properly, if you train me properly then I'll get better." Why not.

So the next morning I head straight into Marcus' office. I say hey, lemme talk to you for a second, and I go into the following speech--

"Listen, I know the numbers, I even see the SDR listing you put on the website, the writing's literally on the wall. Let me tell you why my numbers are the way they are from my perspective. I had one week of training in the very beginning, and then immediately after that the office was closed for two months due to COVID. So I had zero face-to-face training, cold call sessions, shadowing, nothing. Then when I came back to the office I STILL didn't get training, I was kind of left to fend for myself, and so my only recourse was to ask other SDRs and AEs for help. The other SDRs were kinda helpful, mostly not, but the AEs who were SUPREMELY helpful to me are all working in the same region. If you put me in that region for an additional month, with guys who are invested in my success and very good at training, then I promise you'll see results. I don't think the solution here is to fire me."

Well, Marcus surprises me by being very receptive to the speech. He suggests that maybe the REAL reason for my low numbers is that I have a relationship-driven sales technique that's wasted on independent operators, and maybe the solution is to move me into mid-market. He says there's going to be a series of interviews I need to do, one with my boss Bradley, one with the marketing program manager Lindy, and one with Marcus' boss, the director of sales, Satan.

The first two interviews went a-ma-zing, they happened that Friday. Bradley and Lindy were on board 1000%, they were very excited, they agreed that my personality matched mid-market way more than my current position, and they said they were very confident that I'd get the promotion. I'd heard that this Satan fella's a tougher nut to crack, my interview with him was on the following Monday, but the first two interviews had gone so well that I was absolutely gakked out with confidence for the entire weekend. I spent Saturday and Sunday thinking that not only had I talked my way out of being fired, I talked my way INTO a promotion, I'm like Rick Flair right now!

Come Monday. Satan has me sit down for the interview along with Bradley, and I get absolutely roasted. My numbers are there, printed up, and his (actually pretty fair) point the whole time was, "Why on earth should I promote you with numbers like these?" I tried coming back at him with the, "well I think my relationship-driven sales technique is more suited for--" nope, he wasn't having it. He basically yelled at Bradley for not having fired me months ago, he wanted to know where in the world I got the idea that I should have a "relationship-driven" approach to sales as an SDR, he was absolutely gobsmacked that I'd been given permission to exist in this sales org for as long as I have. He said he wouldn't support the promotion and that I'd know where I stood by the end of the day, and I was like, oop, there it is, now I'm getting fired.

Later in the day, predictably, I was handed my walking papers. I'm sorry if the takeaway from this story is too underwhelming to justify the length of it, but really, you have to imagine the emotional roller-coaster I went through in the span of a few days, from Thursday "I'm gonna get fired," to Friday-Sunday "I'm gonna get promoted!" to Monday, "Oh, no, I'm getting SUPER fired." I guess the biggest lesson I learned in all of it is that numbers are king, everything else is bullshit, and if you don't have the numbers then you have zero leverage no matter who's going to bat for you. I also probably need to bone up on my Steve Schiffman. Thanks for reading!

Get be to hard on yourself, things will go your way in time

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:29 AM PDT

I'm new to this BDR role. 5 months in to be exact.

There were numerous times where I thought about quitting before I had something else lined up. I had to remind myself that I was in control of my income if I stuck with it and grinder it out.

Last month was a low for me. I didn't get anything going while my colleagues had at least 1-2 things booked.

This month? I've already hit half of my quota for the month and it's only November 6th.

Nobody else has booked anything for this month, so I'm on top as of right now.

It feels good and motivates me to keep going.

Quit my Job that Offered me Raise so that I can Relocate for New Offer or Stay?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:18 AM PDT

I've been wanting to relocate out of North East US for a while and head to warmer climates. I

was offered $65,000 base with $10,000 target commission to stay, and help transform an internal only department into retail service. 8-5 M-F, includes $200 a month for gas but I don't have to travel. My manager reports to ownership so my name is thrown around a lot in meeting talks.

The job I am toying with is B2B AE position with $60,000 base + $2500 signing bonus + $30,000 OTE commission.

It's a hybrid work from home / meetings in office environment. I get mileage reimbursement if I have to conduct business on the road. It's in Florida.

I like my job but I hate living in a cold climate.

    Opinions?

Remote Inside Sales Rep, Looking for BT headset for Meetings, Personal Use

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:25 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I just started a new gig as an Inside Sales Rep at a startup, and my wired Apple headphones are dying, so I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm only taking Zoom meetings with small inbound leads, so no volume dialing, or any dialing at all it sounds like. I'm fully remote and can work anywhere in the 4 US time zones, so I'm going to be traveling a good bit once I'm ramped up, and all over the US, NA, and SA hopefully, so would love something with Noise Cancelling for various working spaces.

That said, I'm looking for wireless BT headphones/headset for Zoom meetings, listening to music, etc. and connecting to my MacBook and iPhone. Basically everything work and personal besides the gym (getting a cheap pair for that).

    Considering the following:

    • AirPods Pro
    • AirPods Max
    • Bose NC 700
    • Maybe Jabra or Plantronics (aka, now Poly)

Do I really need something with a mic arm like the Jabra/Plantronics, or will the Bose/AirPods Max work fine since I'm not really dialing at all?

Also, maybe this is just me, but does anyone feel like the look of a big headset is off putting to prospects?

Also, I'm not provided with a cell phone. Silly question, but how do I use a BT headset with Zoom without a cell phone? I've always had Zoom call my cell to use headphones because of the lightning cable. Can I just BT them to my MacBook and connect with Computer Audio on Zoom?

Question for People that Get a lot of Cold Calls

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:01 AM PDT

From your perspective, when you receive a cold call, what is something a rep can say to get you to listen for at least a minute or two?

    Or

What is something a rep maybe shouldn't say that you here often?

I got an offer from Comcast Business to be a strategic enterprise AE. They only allow 8 days of pto

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Honestly I am a bit worried about this offer. Something about working for Comcast feels off. The salary is higher than current job. And I am on a performance plan that is damn near un obtainable and means probably gone by end of November

Is 8 days of PTO bad ? I have a trip scheduled during Christmas week and they asked if better to start after new year since would take up PTO.

What does everyone think about offer and the pto thing ? Is Comcast business a good company to work for for?

    Advice: Enterprise SaaS offer

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 06:06 PM PDT

I have posted here in the past about being a top performer in my start-up sales organization with some relative frustration related to compensation plan cuts (my commission rate for 2021 was cut by 40% as an example) and overall lack of appreciation from my organization relative to my results. By definition, I am an "enterprise/major" AE however my company closes true few enterprise level deals. I have been the top rep in my org globally 2 of the past 3 years, and if the year closed today, I would be top rep again. My largest concern with my company outside of my own personal treatment, is lack of upward movement (from a results perspective, I make the company too much money to be in any other type of role relatively speaking), lack of diversity being a female sales representative (I am one of 3 women on the entire sales team, the NA org has never had a female sales leader in my tenure), and I have significant concerns that I am selling a product that can scale to enterprise consumption (I almost had our largest customer terminate due to performance of the system at scale and put a significant amount of my commissions at risk of claw-back).

I have an offer from a direct competitor as an Enterprise AE, whom is considered a bit of a dinosaur/traditional leader in the space depending on whom you speak to.

Years of quota carrying experience: 8

    Locale: TX

Current compensation: $115K base, $255K OTE. Earnings for past 2-3 years have varied from $250-425K.

Offer: $150K base, $300K OTE. Similar product than I currently sell, but would open up capabilities to co-sell with SAP & GCP. Have a call with hiring manager to gain a better understanding of accelerators and ability to scale it.

    Questions:

    • Relative to current job market for Enterprise AEs in SaaS, is this a competitive base & OTE?
    • What advice would you have for a routine top performer in their own sales org in looking at a new opportunity? I don't know if I'd ultimately like to move into a management role or what I'd like to do longer term, but my top priority would be to continue to be in a position to build and close larger transactions at an enterprise level.

Looking to transition into API sales

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 02:15 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm planing to transition to API/data sales. Can you guys point me to some resources? How does the sales cycle actually look like? Are leads just trial accounts / is outbound even possible ?

    Let's assume some process:

    1. Customer signs for trial
    2. Pitch Services/Demo + Answer technical questions
    3. Contract and signing

Let's say I plan to enter the finance/tech industry. What do I need to consider? What's the avg deal size with those things? Do you actually make contracts or is it just self service ?

Would appreciate some industry insights !

Can emailing 10+ people at the same company back lash?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 03:54 PM PDT

If too many people at a company see the same email, can that have negative effects? Or can it be positive and get people talking at their next meeting? Probably depends on the industry too.

Getting a degree to further sales career?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 12:29 AM PDT

Didn't finish college cause I was making enough money without it. As Im now advancing through my sales career I'm wondering how much it may help to have.

If I go back to finish school now, will it be a deterrent or an attractor that I'm going back for my BBA while applying for AE roles in SaaS companies? Do they want to see you've already got it out the way or are they happy to see that you're going back for it and in school while being an AE at their company potentially?

If I already have a few years of solid sales exp under my belt, will it even make a difference if I get a degree at this point?

Ultimate goal is to become an Ent. AE either in martech or restaurant tech...I know different industries but those are the ones that fascinate me most and are the onesr Ive been laying the groundwork for, so far. Idgaf about being in mgmt.

    Sales Interview

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 07:58 PM PDT

Hello everyone, for a senior report that's due in a few days, I have to interview a sales person by asking the following questions:

    • What are the key skills required to do your job? *Do you feel that your sales training has been successful in preparing you for your job? If not, what could be better implemented?
    • What do you need to know about your products/services in order to succeed?
    • How has professional selling changed in the past few years? What adjustments have you made as a result of Covid? Do you think Covid will have a long-lasting impact on your career, and if so, how?
    • How do you prepare for sales calls with new customers?
    • What methods have worked the best for you with keeping customers engaged and successfully ending a sales call?

Feel free to add anything else outside of those questions, and the more detailed the answer, the better. Your name and company are "required" and preferred for this, but I understand not being comfortable sharing. Thanks for anyone willing to help.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 04:55 PM PDT

Currently in my first full time sales role, sales Rep dealing with inbound and Outbound.

I find I can improve my emails for them to show more value of the product, convey information in a more sales-forward manner. I have a technical background. I was thinking about taking an online course /reading blogs about the art of copyrighting.

Has anyone had similar thoughts or any tips to write with a more sales style?

    Sandler sales system opinions

    Posted: 05 Nov 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I'm newly introduced to Sandler. I do B2C in the home and just went through the audible recording of Selling to Homeowners the Sandler Way. I picked up some nuggets and have already implemented some small things but was wondering if I could get some people's opinion on Sandler.

My understanding is that Sandler has been mostly B2B focused so I expect maybe some opinions may not necessarily be in the same market segment as what I do. TIA!
