"Off duty" Leo tried pulling me over in a U-Haul Renta a pick up

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:17 AM PST

So I got cut off while going down the road, as a Class A truck driver, I'm used to it but this dude yeeted himself Infront of me causing me to hit my breaks in my personal vehicle so hard my tail end started sliding out. We get to the red light, I look at him and said "thanks bro, you almost fucking killed me" and I couldn't hear a thing he was saying to me because I really didn't care and then he said "I'm a cop, how about you pull over over there" and I said "ain't no way, you better call your boys to pull me over" and I just kept repeating that to him and he kept mocking what I was saying, eventually I just said the hell with it and I just pulled off and went about my business because I had to go pick up my son. I honestly don't know what can become of this situation but I'm curious does he had any right at all, to try and pull me over in civilian clothes, while in a U-Haul rent-a-pickup and what are the ramifications with me just refusing to let what I presumed to be a civilian pull me over and drive off. The state is Georgia.

My son’s roommate died in their apartment, apartment complex sent him straight to collections without contact

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:40 AM PST

My son's roommate died in August, my son found him. On top of being incredibly traumatic and sad, both the roommate's parents and I spoke with management to ask if we needed to do anything. All of us were told no, and we all asked to be contacted if there was anything else. November 2 we received a letter that my son was sent to collections over a month of unpaid rent and a $1600 biohazard cleaning fee. I know in other states, if both tenants are on the lease, the living tenant is not responsible for the biohazard fee, but the estate of the deceased is. We live in Georgia, and I can't find any text outlining what the law is. Additionally, I went up to the apartment to figure out what the hell happened; my best guess is that they just didn't want to deal with grieving families, which is pretty shitty. They basically shrugged when I asked why we were never contacted. They gave me a copy of the walkout statement, which no one had ever seen before, and the total amount that the collection agency is asking for is different than the amount on the walkout. It shows the amount in the middle of the page, but it is followed by several adjustments of varying amounts that reduce the total by half. So now we're angry, confused, and wondering if we have any rights. The rent was for a month we were told we would not be responsible for, but I'm willing to pay it to make it go away. But it seems unreasonable for him to have to pay the biohazard fee.

My autistic son is being required to take a standardized 3rd grade test by his school

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:00 AM PST

I have an 8 year old autistic son in 3rd grade, who also has a speech impediment. He doesn't know how to read or do math, and cannot speak like other 8 year olds due to his disabilities (his basic communication skills are very limited). He has been going to speech therapy for years, and has an IEP (individualized education plan) at his school; although he has made some progress, he is still far behind other third graders.

I went to his IEP meeting today, and his teachers and school administrators informed me that he will be required to sit for a standardized exam here in Florida, called FSA (Florida Standards Assessments), which tests language arts and math skills (this is given to all kids starting in 3rd grade). His teachers are all aware that he cannot read or do math, and their explanation for this is that "it's a new state law" that requires special needs students to also take this exam. They also informed me that if he fails the exam, he will be held back and will have to repeat the 3rd grade.

I'm very frustrated at this situation, because it is completely unfair to hold him (and other special needs kids) to the same standards as their non-disabled classmates. They are physically unable to complete such an exam. I just don't know what to do, and I feel like this is discriminative against children with disabilities.. there must be a law that can prevent this, or any other way fighting back against this.

Edit: I forgot to mention that he won't be allowed to have any teachers help him during the exam (i.e. to read the questions to him, etc.)

Brother-in-law threatening to withhold inheritance of significant other due to coming out with name chnage. (Indiana, US)

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 07:17 AM PST

My significant other (19 gender fluid) had a grandmother die a few years back that left roughly $40,000 for them but their brother was put in charge of it until they turn 25. He can spend it on anything he claims is in their best interest. When they turned 18, they came out as gender fluid and had a name change. Their car recently broke down so we attempted to get just enough money to cover a down payment on a new car. His response was that the money was left to (dead name), they are no longer that person, so they do not deserve the money. Obviously he can do this until they are 25 since he controls it, but does the name and gender change affect anything? Nothing has been legally changed yet, but they would like to get things moving.

Neighbor is threatening to cut my tree and have me foot the bill

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 01:32 PM PST

[California] I have a tree on my property with some branches up high that crosses over my neighbor's property line. It's a mature tree and provides ample shade but my neighbor claims the leaves and sap is damaging his car.

He sends me a text message telling me that tree trimmers will be cutting the branches and that I'm responsible for the $3000 bill or else he'll take me to court. He also threatens to dump the debris onto my yard if I don't pay the disposal fee.

Note, he did not ask for my permission to trim the tree. I would have been willing to split the tree trimming service if he had been willing to compromise, but it sounds like he wants to take me to court from the start.

From my knowledge, he can legally trim the tree to the property line but cannot trespass on my property to cut the tree.

I'm seeking advice on how best to protect myself and if he can legally charge me for a service I did not agree to. I have not replied to him yet in fear that anything I say will be used against me in court.

Hoping someone with expertise in tree law can advise. Thanks!!

I was falsely accused of sexual harassment for not including the accuser in emails. now I'm being forced to continue daily communication with that person. What do I do?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 07:19 AM PST

I work for a small/medium sized nation wide medical company, we specialize in mobile mammography. I'm the fleet manager / emt manager, my responsibilities include hiring and training EMTs and maintaining our mobile fleet. I spent the first week of October training our new emt on the daily operations. The EMT is the driver and direct operator of the mobile clinic, mammo tech and NPs meet the EMT on site for patient visits.
FF a month, A mechanical issue with one of our mobile clinics came up and our recently hired mammogram tech took it upon themselves to coordinate repairs with our director, without including me. When the issue was not resolved, I was then told about the failed efforts to make the repairs, after the fact. I told our team that any future issues/repairs need to go through me and mechanical decisions should not be made by someone who is not qualified to make those decisions. This mammogram tech was unhappy with my attitude towards suggesting they stay within their scope of practice, and on 11/12 made a claim to our HR manager that I made inappropriate comments regarding their body. When HR asked me about it, I had no idea what they were talking about. Due to the nature of the conversation between HR and I, I was able to deduct the accuser. I emailed my HR manager and told them this claim was false and I felt it was retaliatory due to the argumentative nature of our discussion regarding the repairs on the mobile clinic. HR's response was "thank you". I was forced to take an online sexual harassment course. My director called me the next day and told me I HAD to include the mammogram tech in the details of my communications with the mechanics making the repairs to our mobile clinic, when I asked why I needed to include someone who is not familiar with the mechanical aspects of the clinic, I was told to just do it and to not to question it. I don't feel comfortable communicating with this person who would make such an extreme accusation for not getting their way. What do I do? Is this a hostile work environment? Is this just petty? 95% of our communication is online, but I have had to work directly with this person, and will have to again in the near future. I'm walking on egg shells communicating with this person and I fucking hate it.

[VA] Workers comp says my PTSD is due to my job, the county I work for says it is not

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 06:53 AM PST

I am a firefighter in VA. A few years ago I was diagnosed with PTSD and spent two months in a treatment center specifically for firefighters with mental health and substance abuse issues. It was determined by the medical director that I can not return to work and that my PTSD was due to my time as firefighter.

I saw an independent medical evaluator provided by the county who stated I did not have PTSD but personality disorder and that was not due to the fire department.

2.5 years after I left the treatment I won my workers comp case with the state workers compensation board stating that my PTSD was caused by my time as a firefighter and is covered by workers comp. I then applied for service connected disability through my employer.

The county denied me. I appealed.

The county sent me to another independent medical evaluator who stated that my
"PTSD, developed in part, though not entirely, due to traumatic exposures which occurred in the line of duty as a Firefighter. Thus, he appears to have an injury secondary to his employment which prevents him from performing the significant duties of the classification of Firefighter/EMT."

The county retirement board then voted 5-2 that I do not qualify for Service connected disability. As there is "reasonable doubt" that my PTSD is not entirely caused by my time as a firefighter.

I want to fight this but am unsure how to proceed.

    Things I have already done:
Talked with my union. They paid for my workers comp lawyer to represent me at the disability appeal hearing. He has stated he will no longer represent me as "there is no due process here"

    My questions are:
What type of lawyer do should I be calling for help with this? A regular disability lawyer?
Is anyone aware of any resources for firefighters besides the IAFF that I could turn to for help?
Is there anything else I should be doing?

    Thanks for reading

    Pie order at a bakery

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 07:24 AM PST

I need help with an issue we had at my work just about an hour ago. We are based on New Jersey for reference. A lady called to order holiday pies, and after ordering she asked if we charged sales tax on it, to which we responded yes. She then proceeded to argue that we can't charge that on her order. The bakery laws are confusing but from what I see in New Jersey theres 2 different things bakeries can meet to charge sales tax. The 75% threshold (if 75% of sales is prepared food, which over that is for us, almost everything is house made) or if it classifies as prepared food. Our pies fall under 2 of the any three bullet points it can fall under. It is heated as well as containing 2 or more ingredients combined. They are made from scratch. So it seems as though the lady is wrong, but I just want to be sure as she is being very serious about not paying this sales tax on her order. Help

Landlord stole my cello & illegally evicted me during the moratorium. He has a history of illegal evictions. Damages exceed $15,000+

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:17 PM PST

    Background info:

I am a cello player and have been playing for 17 years. It was my life and my passion. I was 2 semesters away from finishing my Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Cello Performance when the pandemic turned my life upside down. I lost my job within the first couple of months of the pandemic and got behind only a month on rent before I resumed work and returned to making regular payments.

My landlord used this as an opportunity to illegally evict me and steal my cello from me (valued at $15,000+). I was never served eviction papers. It was also brought to my attention that he has illegally evicted tenants in the past, who are willing to testify to this if necessary. Less than a year from obtaining my degree, I had to forfeit my scholarship and put school on pause because of this, as well as pursue alternative employment options. Obviously my future is forever changed because of this man who has deprived me of not just the joy of playing, but the profession and career.

I have night terrors because of this. This experience has been incredibly traumatic for me and has plagued me with terrible insomnia and has sent me to mental health care and sleep specialists who have thankfully have helped me find my footing. I also have since spent the time saving up money to pay for a lawyer to assist me in filing a lawsuit.

My main purpose for making this public inquiry is for preparing my lawsuit against him. After receiving free legal aid, it is my understanding that I can sue for 3x the damages (my cello) or 3x rent. I am wondering if I can sue for additional emotional damages as well as financial damages from the loss of my performance-based scholarship. I really want to resume my life and complete my degree. I feel so empty inside without my cello. I can't stand listening to music. I feel tortured because I am playing cello in my head constantly. It's crippling.

    Here are the details:

    • I lost my job during the governor-issued moratorium on Florida evictions due to the pandemic. I was without work for about six weeks. I regularly paid rent on time, often early.
    • I notified my landlord ahead of time that I would not be able to make rent that month and requested a payment plan over the next few months when I found work. Unfortunately, we agreed to a 3-month payment plan over the phone— Later over text, he pretended that conversation never took place.
    • After this, all further correspondence was conducted over text so it could be on record.
    • He instructed that I had to be vacated by the first of the month, which I said was too short of notice to find a new rental. I again requested we draft a payment plan on terms he could agree on and reminded him of the moratorium by sending him the signed document.
    • I also sent him a "Notice of COVID-19 Impact on Rent" letter, under the advice of a tenant protection advocacy group:

    Dear [Landlord],

This letter is to notify you that I have experienced a loss of income, increased expenses and/or other financial circumstances related to the pandemic. Until further notice, the COVID-19 emergency may impact my ability to pay rent. I am not waiving my right to assert any other defenses. Tenants impacted by the COVID-19 crisis are protected from eviction for nonpayment per emergency declaration(s) from:

    • Governor Ron DeSantis, Executive Order 20-137, June 1, 2020

Congress passed the CARES Act on March 27, 2020 (Public Law 116-136). Tenants in covered properties are also protected from eviction for non-payment or any other reason until August 23, 2020. Tenants cannot be charged late fees, interest, or other penalties through July 25, 2020. Please let me know right away if you believe this property is not covered by the CARES Act and explain why the property is not covered. In order to document our communication and to avoid misunderstandings, please reply to me via mail or text rather than a call or visit.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,

    [Tenant]

    • He responded by telling me his informal text instructing me to vacate the property by the first was not a notice of eviction, but of a "lease non-renewal," since three months prior, my 1-year lease was up and I was paying month-to-month at that point (something I've done before with other landlords.)
    • I gave a conceivable move-out day to my landlord (the 25th of July, as some of my protections from the CARES Act expired on that day), and tried to get him to acknowledge it but he never responded.
    • I was able to secure a rental property far before that move-out date. The new property manager required rental verification for move-in, and my landlord amicably and quickly obliged.
    • I had begun the move-out process after this, over the course of a week before a new move-out date was provided by me to my landlord.
    • On the night before my move-out date, my landlord went into my apartment and cleared out the whole place. He claimed the door was open and the place was trashed. He took photos. I left my door locked.
    • He changed the locks and moved all of my belongings to the road.
    • Of those belongings, my nicer kitchen appliances and electronics were missing.
    • Most importantly, my cello, cello case, and bow were missing. These have a combined value of $15,000+.
    • He claimed those items were not in the house.
    • I called the police who said they required access to the apartment in order to verify that my cello was stolen in a police report. I repeatedly tried contacting my landlord for access to the apartment but he ignored me.
    • The police could not conduct an investigation on the theft, and unfortunately, I had no insurance on the instrument to aid in an inquiry on my missing cello.
    • The police informed me that no county clerks were issuing evictions, no judges were signing them, and no police were delivering them, so my eviction was in fact illegal.
    • I sought out legal aid, who told me I may pursue an action for prohibitive acts. Apparently, if you sue for prohibitive acts you can sue for 3 times the amount of rent or actual damages (loss of your personal property and any cost arising from the lockout), whichever is greater.
    • I was told that I can sue the landlord in Small Claims Court without an attorney if your damages are no more than $5,000. However, since my claims exceed $8000 in value, I would have to hire an attorney to file my lawsuit in the County Court. If I sue for 3x the damages, this would exceed $30,000 which means I would need a lawyer to file in the Circuit Court.
    • I was advised I must be prepared to have a lawyer in the likely event that a suit I bring against my landlord, he may file counterclaims and sue me for owed rent, breach of contract, damages, etc.
    • Because of this, I have been working and saving up money for legal fees. I have been able to build a good amount of savings.
    • Upon hearing about this, a former co-worker of mine reached out to me to let me know that while she was a former neighbor of that apartment, she knew of someone who was illegally evicted from the same apartment by the same landlord. She put me in contact with her.
    • I spoke with her, and she told me how he put a phony eviction notice on her door AFTER clearing her place out, keeping all of her furniture and personal belongings, save for the few things he saw as trash and threw to the side of the road. She told me she also heard of other tenants who were illegally evicted by this landlord.

    What I Need to Know:

    1. Could someone tell me what type of lawyer should I contact? How much should I expect to pay in legal fees?
    2. How much can I sue for? If I can prove (and I can) that my property exceeded $8,000 in value, can I sue for 3x that? Can I sue for my loss of education/scholarship? Or emotional damages?
    3. If this is the case, is it worth it to pursue a lawsuit with damages exceeding $30,000 in the Circuit Court, or should I only file under $30,000 in the County Court?
    4. I was given this packet for assistance in filing a small claims lawsuit, as well as this form. Can I use this same paperwork to file a lawsuit with damages exceeding $8,000 outside the Small Claims Court?
    5. Can I also pursue Replevin Action in an attempt to get my cello returned to me? If so, can/should I also sue for the damages previously mentioned?
    6. How much in fees should I expect to pay to the court when I file?
    7. How do I present the sworn statement of the previous tenant who was illegally evicted to show a pattern of this criminal behavior? Do I acquire sworn statements of those who could back her story? Does it need to be signed?
    8. Besides that statement, correspondence with the landlord, proof of purchase/official appraisal of my cello's value, my "Notice of COVID-19 Impact on Rent" letter, the moratorium, letters from my doctors detailing the impact of the crime on my health, my scholarship award letter, what other evidence should I provide when filing my suit?
    9. Do I really need a lawyer? In the information I was provided, it was vague when saying that I could file a suit without a lawyer for damages under $5,000. Could I conceivably do this by myself in the County or Circuit Court?
    10. What did the legal advisor mean when they said I would have to be prepared for a countersuit from my landlord? How much would this countersuit set me back financially with or without a lawyer?

I wish I had a tl;dr, but unfortunately, this is a complicated situation that I expect requires complex litigation. If you made it this far, thank you for reading! If you didn't, I don't blame you. But I hope at the very least a post like this can bring attention to actions to combat the unprecedented predatory nature of landlords during this pandemic.

Thank you for any and all advice!

Lawyer Threatening To Sue Over Pet's Treatment

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:06 AM PST

    Location: California

Throwaway because I don't want this attached to my main.

My husband and I are veterinarians and work together in the same practice. We treated a 12 year old dog for a severe ear infection in both ears. Treatment included an ear cleaning, otic antibiotic applied by us in hospital, and ear drops prescribed to go home. We always inform clients that pets will experience some temporary hearing loss post treatment due to the thick consistency of the medications applied in the ear. We also go over prescription directions, possible side effects, and give clients informational pamphlets to reference about the medication they are taking home.

The client brought the senior dog in today for a re-check. He claimed the dog was totally deaf and that he googled the side effects of the medication my husband prescribed and one of the side effects included hearing loss. My husband evaluated the dog and while he was a bit slow to respond to certain noises, he did not meet the criteria for deafness. He also examined the ear canal and the tympanic membrane (eardrum), noting that while there was obviously medication inside, there was no damage to the drum itself.

When he attempted to explain his findings to the owner and re-iterate the medication effects, the owner became extremely combative, saying that he was a lawyer and that he was suing us for prescribing the medication. He also kept changing his story, one minute saying that no one told him of possible side effects, that his personal research had unearthed them, and then the next minute saying that nurses at our hospital had in fact told him his dog would go permanently deaf. He also declined to speak to my husband initially and kept wanting to solely speak to nurses, asking for names and employee schedules.

In the end, we referred him to a specialty hospital which concluded with him saying we weren't taking responsibility. My husband told him because he (the owner) believes the dog is deaf and our exam contradicts that, he needs to get another opinion.

This is not an out of the ordinary treatment; it's very standard and basic for ear infections. It doesn't seem like he has much legal recourse, but being that he is a lawyer, we're wondering if we're missing something.

    VRBO a total scam?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:12 AM PST

I rented through verbo recently for a two night stay in Twnetynine palms, CA with 4 others for the weekend during which time we were going to run a half marathon. The day before arrival the property owner asked for a $500 security deposit through Venmo in order to gain access to the property. We thought it was kind of odd but saw in VRBO's terms and conditions that that was acceptable, so we paid.

We arrived at the property and noticed one of the tv's was broken when we tried to turn it on. So we messaged the owner right away alarming them to the situation. I am not exaggerating when I say the owner instantly started berating us over the phone to admit fault to breaking their TV, "because the previous renters were two adults and two children, and they would never." We had just arrived to the site, there was no time to break their TV! The renter then cancelled our reservation on the spot, told us there were going to keep the $500 security deposit, call the police to have us escorted off the property, and "think about reimbursing us if we leave the property without difficulty."

We tried reasoning with the owner, but ultimately this all felt like a complete scam. We of course left right away, but we were not refunded at all, and VRBO is saying that the only way we can get a refund is if WE figure out a resolution with the owner???

Idk I guess I'm looking for advice. I'm exhausted of getting no where with VRBO, and I don't feel safe contacting the owner. has this happened to anyone else where you actually got your money back? Legally is there anything that can be done?

Contractor brought insufficient manpower to job

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 07:00 AM PST

sorry I don't totally know how all this works or the terminology but this is the best i can do. I tried searching for a similar post but couldn't find one. this happened in ohio.

I had a few cabinets in my basement I got for free and purchased all the material needed to have my kitchen renovated. A contractor got ahold of me and said on the phone he could do the job in a day and a half with a master craftsman at a rate of 120$ an hour and two apprentices at 45$ an hour. on the first day the master and one apprentice showed up and they mostly scrambled around gathering materials, at one point going to the wrong lowes rather than the one I had ordered the parts and were waiting for pickup.

on monday they started the job, but only the master showed up. this continued all week to my growing frustration. on thursday he said he needed to go to another job that friday. they arrived the next monday with the master and one apprentice. the dishwasher was damaged so they didn't show back up again until thursday and friday to install the dishwasher. they came back again on monday and supposedly completed the job and texted me the bill. there were a few obvious items they missed so i pointed them out and they returned on wednesday to finish up.

the bill is 3.4x as much as what was originally said on the phone. I have to assume this is because they didn't have the manpower for the job and had only a single very expensive person on the job. I purchased everything needed to complete the job. what is my standing here? do I really have to pay the total bill they gave me? I feel like we had an agreement on the phone and they changed it without confirming with me that this was acceptable. If they didn't have the manpower for the job they shouldn't have accepted or started. I feel like they are putting me on the hook for their own issues.

thank you for any help on this!!!

update: I asked the guy for an itemized bill and now he is saying he is going to charge a higher hourly rate because he was originally giving me a discount? is that ok?

Can my landlord fine me $500 for living next to someone who smokes?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:18 PM PST

    Location: MI

Recently my apartment building has been having issues with smoking complaints. Smoking of any kind is not allowed within the building but my fiancé and I will often smell marijuana when we walk into our apartment. It's never too bad and most of the time we only can smell it in one specific spot under an air vent. We never complained to the leasing office about it because we didn't care too much and didn't even know where it was coming from. However we've received multiple emails from the leasing office saying that they are trying to crack down on the smoking complaints they've been receiving and would be investigating to see which apartments the smells were coming from.

This morning we receiving another email stating the following:

"Effective immediately, each complaint reported will result in a $500 fine applied to EVERY surrounding apartment to the complainant, above and below. This is not the tone we would like to set however these offenders are disrupting the peaceful enjoyment of others within the community and it will not be tolerated.

Each lease holder is responsible for the actions of all guests and visitors who are on our property, per the Rules and Regulations and lease agreement."

My question is, can they legally do this? Neither of us smoke and don't see how they could potentially fine us $500 without proof that we've done anything wrong.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Do I have any legal move I can make against them? I'm in California, the contracting company is in Colorado.

    Child on a four wheeler

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 06:30 AM PST

Someone that lives down my street lets their small child (around 7 years old) drive a four wheeler up and down their street.

He drives pretty recklessly and I'm worried he will cause an accident, he almost did to me and my sister while we were riding bikes.

The four wheeler has a license plate so it's road legal and I live in Ohio

My Employer Failed to Report an Accident - Now I owe $5,000 in medical bills

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 06:45 AM PST

I work at a dog rescue, which is a non-profit. Two months ago, a metal dog door weighing 30 lbs fell while I was crawling through it (to bring a dog inside, if anyone is curious). The door hit me on the back of my head, and as soon as it happened I ran to our main building, while feeling very confused, and called my boss to let her know what had happened. Our boss is rarely ever present at our site - I maybe see her twice every month or so - so calling or texting concerns but not meeting face-to-face is pretty common.

When my symptoms didn't get better for about a half hour, I texted her to let her know that I was being picked up from work early to be seen at an urgent care just for a basic neurological exam, as I REALLY didn't want to be stuck in the ER all night. The doctor at the urgent care clinic diagnosed me with a probably brain injury/concussion, but told me my neuro exam did not pose any concerns. They sent me home with a list of symptoms to watch out for.

I went back to work, leaving early the next day because of a headache and then again the second day, when I left to go to the ER because I noticed one of the symptoms they told me to watch out for. At the ER, they diagnosed me with a definite concussion and also mentioned what looked like a minor skull fracture on the x-ray.

Now two months later, I received a medical bill for about $5,000, as my insurance denied coverage due to the injury being a work incident. This is when it became clear that my employer failed to submit an accident report of any kind. My question, then, would be who is responsible for the payment of these medical bills?

Edit: I forgot to add, I both live and work in the state of Illinois.

Employer wants to track my location on my personal phone

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 12:52 PM PST

I'm a inhome caregiver in California. My employer wants me to log in and track my location when I get to my shift at the person I take care of house. This is on MY personal phone, not a phone given to me from my employer. Is this legal? They say they can " Under the 21st Century Cures Act Electronic Visit Verification (EVV)". Is this legal? Many employees want to quit because of this.

Broke both ankles falling into a pothole. Surgery is $20,000 and I don’t have insurance

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:01 AM PST

I was walking my dog at night and fell into a massive pothole on the edge of the road. There are no street lights in the area. When I fell, I broke a bone in my left foot and completely destroyed my right ankle. I had surgery yesterday on my ankle and since I'm uninsured, the cost is $20,000. I'm a single mom and will probably be paying on that the rest of my life. I was told my some friends to sue the city I live in but I don't even know if I have a case? I also don't have the money for a consultation with a lawyer right now. I was hoping maybe someone here could help me out.

    I'm in South Carolina

Someone Stole My Sister-In-Laws Dog. Help!

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:52 AM PST

Almost exactly 1 year ago something miraculous happened. My sister-in law's dog, (Otis) that ran away months before, showed back up at their door. After endless searching and reaching to local shelters they had given up hope only to find him at their back doorstep. Where had he been all of this time? Well... a family found him and took him in without any attempt to get him back to his rightful owner (yes, he had a collar). After Otis ran away from the family that claimed him, they began searching for the him as their own. They discovered that Otis returned back to my sister-in-law and proceeded with calling the police and trying to get him back. After days of back and forth with this family and police, the police confirmed that Otis was rightfully my Sister-in-laws and advised her to block all contact with these people. She had pictures of the dog with her children from years prior as well as a receipt of purchase....So you have read this far and are probably thinking "wait, no dog has been stolen? This appears to be a happy ending!" Well, the story does not end there. Last week this family came back to my sister-in-laws house and stole Otis back. It has been visually confirmed that he is back in this family's possession. After contacting the police and an attorney, they seem to act as if their hands are tied and there are no grounds in getting Otis back as it could be a '"look-a-like" to those in the pictures (Otis is not chipped).

With that, I am asking for some guidance. What can she do to get Otis back? Thank you for taking the time to read this as she feels that most of her options have been exhausted.
