While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply! San Francisco Spending (Cost of Living) Data 2018-2020 Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:56 PM PST Hello FIRE people, Ever since I learned about FIRE in November 2017, I started tracking my spending. Before COVID (and maybe still to this day), debates about the cost of living in San Francisco and whether or not it's worth it to move there for a job raged on. My quick personal take is that the income upside definitely outweighs the cost of living downside. I lived in San Francisco for ten years and moved back to my home state in 2021, but I thought I'd share the data I collected while I was there. I have monthly breakdowns for 2018, 2019, and 2020. Here are the annual summaries (sum and monthly average) for my actual spending: https://i.imgur.com/VzUiptj.jpg I lived with a partner and we split the rent, so here is an additional set of summaries with the full rent amount: https://i.imgur.com/0SWxQQU.jpg TL;DR: I spent $35K in 2018, $46K in 2019, and $54K in 2020. Without split rent, I would have spent $47K in 2018, $58K in 2019, and $78K in 2020. Some notable info about the data: As is tradition, here is the full dataset (LibreOffice Calc format, should work in Excel too): https://mega.nz/file/VNECGBCb#obeca4aP-gbhQvAq9aaFwEmEyplKJLgP6ooYEiPFleU Enjoy! Happy to answer any questions about the data or living in SF. Cheers! [link] [comments] |
